Hidden Blessings Of Lifes Challenges
Stephen was married 10 years to what he called his “soul mate”–during their 10 years of marriage they may have had at the most 3 arguments, they saw life in the same way but one day “she slipped off mentally…detached from reality”—she woke up 2am and she thought someone was in their yard trying to kill her, which led to the paramedics taking her to the hospital to have a mental health evaluation––there were many more situations similar to this one. She was diagnosed with a mental illness and was prescribed medication which seemed to help her until she stopped taking it…which led to more incidences, including running away from home, living on the streets, sleeping in her car, and running up her credit cards. During these difficult times, she ran up a credit card debt of $100k. She never was able to “regain her balance”
But this story isn’t Stephen’s wife’s it’s about him and how he faced this difficulty in his life. He said about this time with his wife “was challenging and devastating on many levels…” because of his journey he has written a book “Mental Illness: A Support Guide for Families and Friends” for people who may have someone they love dealing with a mental health issue…it’s a guide for the caretakers and how they can navigate through the mental anguish and fatigue of taking care of a loved one dealing with a prognosis of a mental health illness.
