"You dont look ..." is a phrase we use to start the conversation about how people around us dont look or act their age. Each week we share tips, tricks and life hacks on topics from sleep to nutrition to help keep each other feeling and looking younger than our biological age. Episode #22 - Three is a Magic Number

Episode #22 - Three is a Magic Number

Hello and welcome to the "You Dont Look..." Podcast Episode #22 - three is a magic number. Listen to hear about the song that inspired this episode, why three really is a magic number and the commonalities and differences in the responses to the question (I asked five people):

"What are 3 good things that happened to you this week?"

I am in the process of trying to set up two different interviews and getting schedules to click is proving challenging.

The podcast content has pivoted since Covid-19 to focus more on how people that dont look or at their age achieve this by up-leveling, using their courage muscle.

This will be the last episode until Sept 2020--Im going on hiatus. I'd love to hear from you what content, guests you would like to see featured on this podcast come Fall 2020 and if you would like to be a guest lets have that conversation. Email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com. Please share the podcast, leave a review and subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Anchor, and wherever you get your podcasts. Until next time, Namaste

Episode #21 - Covid -19 Still here...

Episode #21 - Covid -19 Still here...

Hello and Welcome to the "You Don't Look" Podcast Episode #21. How are ya'll doing? So we are no longer in "lock down" because of Covid-19 but we have to wear masks everywhere because Covid-19 is still out there! Still cant get on a plane to see my family or vice versa and we had family matriarch pass away recently--so that was hard. Not being able to be with family to get closure and mourn. Hurricane season is officially here in FL. The number of cases is blowing up here in FL, State Parks will be close July 3 and 4 so celebrating the Home of the Free, Land of the Brave will definitely be different this year, especially without fire works. Happy Birthday America! While Covid-19 is definitely making the times in which we live unusual, the US has had public health crises before. Ever hear of Typhoid Mary? She was a real person--an asymptomatic carrier of tyhoid fever in 1906. She lived much of her life in quarantine. Check out the podcast Throughline There is Something About Mary –its amazing the ordeal this woman went through this alone!

Im still educating myself, listening and reflecting on how I can use my sphere of influence to help be part of systemic change in the Black Lives Matter movement. Im still supporting black owned businesses locally. If you are here in St. Augustine check out Martin K's place: https://growersalliance.com/.  You can order on-line and they also have e-gift certificates. Are yall glad zoom school is over? What are your summer child care plans? Got an idea for an upcoming episode or want to be part of one? Drop me a line on IG @koastalsupyoga.com or email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com. Please share this podcast, leave a review and until next week...Namaste.

Episode #20 - R Higgins-- Why & How he came to be a left handed artist

Episode #20 - R Higgins-- Why & How he came to be a left handed artist

Hello and Welcome to the "You Dont Look.." Podcast Episode #20. This week I have the honor of interviewing local artist R J Higgins. I first discovered him at the "Made In St. Augustine" arts festival held in the center of St. Augustine during my first summer as an official FL resident (2017). I was drawn to the way he transformed scraps of metal and wood—you know stuff that’s really stiff and rigid--into flowy soft-bodied sea creatures like Jelly fish. RJ also does amazing vibrantly colored and detailed painting(s) on pieces and scraps of drift wood of fish like Mahi Mahi (aka Dolphin). That day I bought one of each of these things and I still have them. There were so many other pieces he had that day that drew me in—like a sculpture of a puffer fish made from an old gas tank. I kept following him on Instagram and was and still am amazed at how his skill and talent as an artist have developed into higher and higher levels. These days his work involves mixed media which adds a depth and dimension that really bring the pieces to life. His skill with a saw to create the flowing narrow tentacles of an octopus makes you feel like you are seeing one up close and in person.

He does all of this left handed. He was not always left handed. Listen to hear why and how he became a left handed artist (taking up-leveling to literally a whole other level!), his creative process, why the ocean inspires him, and what his future plans are for his art. The best way to get in touch with him is via his website at https://www.artbyrjhiggins.com/ or on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/artbyrjhiggins/. He also has an Etsy shop that sells T-shirts with his art on it (I have one of those too!) check it out at RJ Etsy Shop

He also shares who he follows on Instagram and why. Check them out for yourself here: https://www.instagram.com/cruiseybabbby/, https://www.instagram.com/keylo_art/, and https://www.instagram.com/thewoodenwhaleco/

Please share this episode with a friend, subscribe & leave us a review. You can always email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com. If you are close enough to visit St. Augustine this summer let’s do a paddleboard yoga sesh! Until next week, Namaste.

Episode #19 --Punting

Episode #19 --Punting

HEllo and Welcome to the "You Dont Look" Podcast--Episode #20. This week I had the show notes all done, links added, and found out the zoom audio file of the interview I did with someone that I really wanted to have on the podcast was only one minute long! Argh! Lesson learned: always check the length of the Zoom audio file right after you record to be sure its the length you expect it to be! So I wanted to take this opportunity to ask "How are yall doing" "Are you done with Zoom school?" and even though more businesses are open and there is more freedom to shop and socialize I still wear a mask in public. I'm learning and listening how to be an accomplish to the Black Lives Matter movement.  Area businesses owned by black people that I have been supporting are Better Bodies Gym, Growers Alliance, the UPS Store (in the Publix Plaza on Rte 312). I've also checkd out Tough Guy Cookies located in JAX; they deliver locally and the couple I know that lives in JAX has actually been staying with older in-laws out of state, so I have to find other people I know that live in JAX so that I can send some of these yummy cookies their way. Good to see MA and NY governments are taking first steps toward police reform. Lots of other news thanks to SCOTUS and the Summer Solstice is this Sat 6/20/20. Join me for some paddleboarding if you are in the area.

Please share this episode, subscribe and leave a review. You can also email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com. Until next week, Namaste.

Episode #18 - My Hypothyroidism Journey - Part II

Episode #18 - My Hypothyroidism Journey - Part II

Hello and Welcome to the "You Dont Look" Podcast Episode #18--this week I will be sharing Part II of my Hypothyroidism journey from the mid-part of the bell curve to “flat line”, which is essentially how I stay in the mid part of the bell curve of health and wellness.

Once my wholistic practitioner Dr. Rashmi Gulati put me on a dose (that was right for me) of Compound Thyroid we then developed a supplement regimen to help my body heal. That regimen included (and still does actually) digestive enzymes, probiotics, two types of magnesium to help with muscle relaxation and gut peristalsis, omega 3 oil, and an the amino acid L-theanine (which is one type of adaptogen).

I then dialed in my diet using the Auto-immune Protocol (AIP). Dr. Dr.Sarah Ballantyne is an excellent resource to learn more about this paleo based elimination diet strategy, which focuses on nutrient dense whole foods while cutting out processed foods, e.g., dairy and white sugar. AIP also focuses on stress management, sleep and staying active. Listen as I share my morning routine and how I survived cutting out coffee and chocolate during the elimination phase of AIP.

One secret: is a wicked tasty coffee alternative named “Teecino”;trust me on this one.

Another great resource for those of you on the journey to healing from hypothyroidism is like Marni Wasserman over at https://ultimatehealthpodcast.com/. Please share this podcast with friends, subscribe and leave a review. Feel free to email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com with any questions you may have about hypothyroidism; I’ll do my best to answer them. Until next week, Namaste.

Oh --in case you missed it, pop over to Episode #16 to listen to Part I of my Hypothyroidism journey from fatigue to getting to the bell curve.

Episode #17 - Just the Beginning--taking down the system around white supremacy starting with anti-racism

Episode #17 - Just the Beginning--taking down the system around white supremacy starting with anti-racism

Hello and Welcome to the You Don’t Look Podcast – Episode #17. I’d like to use this platform to talk about the take down of the system around white supremacy starting with anti-racism and supporting black entrepreneurs –business owners, coaches, artists on Instagram and in the real world.  The content for this episode has taken me over a week to get done as it has been difficult to find the words to aptly express how I feel and to reach out to those that I very much care about that are in the black community I cant know what you go through but I am here to stand with you and support you in any way that is in my realm of influence.

Black White

Human for all Time

The Covid-19 slogan “We are all in this together” still applies.

Im willing to listen, to learn by going within and begin having uncomfortable conversations.

I can do more by donating, calling the Minnesota Governor’s Office, the offices of my local officials, signing petitions and sharing petitions, reaching out my black friends and ask them “How are you doing?”, and demonstrating. Below are some of the resources I have used to be part of the change our world needs. It is just the beginning.

The Bail Project™ National Revolving Bail Fund is on a mission to combat mass incarceration and reshape the pretrial system in the United States. 100% of online donations are used to bring people home. Since bail money comes back to us when cases close, we're able to recycle every dollar donated at least twice per year. https://bailproject.org/

George Floyd Memorial Fund

This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist George’s family in the days to come as they continue to seek justice for George.  A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund. https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd

Justice for Breonna Taylor Fund

Shortly after midnight on March 13, Louisville police officers, executing a search warrant, used a battering ram to crash into the apartment of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American emergency room technician. Her boyfriend, fearing for their safety, shot at one of the officer’s legs. The officers then fired shots that struck Breonna 8 times. Today, June 5, is Taylor’s birthday. She would have been 27 years old. The community has been reaching out in support of Bree’s family and wanting to donate to the cause. You can do that using this link https://www.gofundme.com/f/9v4q2-justice-for-breonna-taylor

Please use and share the resources I’ve shared here. If Sharing on IG here are a few of the hashtags you can use #freedomshouldbefree,  #GeorgeFloyd and #JusticeoforBreonnaTaylor. Until next week, Namaste.

Episode #16 - Hypothyroidism - My Journey from Fatigue to Feeling Great Part I

Episode #16 - Hypothyroidism - My Journey from Fatigue to Feeling Great Part I

Hello and Welcome to the "You Dont Look" Podcast Episode #16--this week we will be talking about hypothyroidism.

It was World Hypothyroidism Day on 5/25/20. Did you know that:

20 Million women in the US have an underactive thyroid and that 60% of them are unaware of it?

Women are 5 to 8 times more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men

1 in 8 women will have a thyroid issue at some during their lifetime

I am one of those 8 women.

This episode is part one of my story from fatigue to feeling great. These days I work a full time desk job, run my own paddleboard yoga/ecotour business and am a fitness trainer to three clients. I mention this because it feels great to be able to what I want when I want. But my energy came to a screeching halt in 2007.

Within the span of 6 mos in 2007 into 2008, I had endured the sudden passing of my Father, a major car accident and an emergency surgery due to a freak occurrence in my right lung. I spent the end of 2007, all of 2008 and into 2009 with debilitating fatigue, brain fog and issues with digestion and elimination. Oh yeah and no period for 3 consecutive months. My OBGYN thought to test for hypothyroidism. Listen to this episode to find out more about hypothyroidism, to learn what the thyroid does, what are T4 and T3, what can cause your thyroid to underperform and how I began my way back to feeling more like me through finding an amazing wholistic practitioner, Dr. Rashmi Gulati. She is the Chief MD at https://www.patientsmedical.com/in NYC, and discovering others, like Marni Wasserman over at https://ultimatehealthpodcast.com/who also had underactive thyroid and was now also working on healing her body from this disease. Please share this podcast with friends, subscribe and leave a review. Feel free to email me at info@koastalsupyoga.comwith any questions you may have about hypothyroidism; I’ll do my best to answer them or direct you to someone who can. Until next week, Namaste.

Epsiode #15 - Habits of the Midlife Money Maker Gail Keyes Allen

Epsiode #15 - Habits of the Midlife Money Maker Gail Keyes Allen

Hello "You Don't Look"ers ! Welcome to Episode#15! This week we continue exploring the topic of habits; specifically: What Pre-Covid-19 habits do you still use? What new habits have you developed since Covid-19? and Which of these habits do you see yourself keeping once “normal” life resumes? When I asked these questions to the amazing people Ive come to know in Cathy Heller’s “You Were Made to Do This” business mastermind, the venerable and sassy Gail Keyes Allen offered to share her story on this podcast. Gail has a background in economics and accounting, she has owned her own catering business & run a franchise, was a fitness trainer, and is now embarking on another journey as “The Midlife Money Maker Society”. This woman has done it all and is offering actionable steps to help you learn more about money making.

Pre-Covid-19 Gail—who thrives on routines and being outside—got up early every morning to catch the bus for a one hour commute (that often took longer) to her accounting job where her habits included intermittent fasting—made easy by getting the same salad from the same place and eating at the same time every day ---and then going for a walk outside. During the shelter-in place Gail found that she had to modify her routine(s) to fit her new normal, which included caring for her 6 month old grandson (who is beyond adorbs). She put boundaries in place like locking the door to her home office and she still makes sure she takes her daily walk outdoors. Gail had so much going on throughout the course but every time we had a group meeting she was upbeat and coming up with new ideas and taking action, like creating the Midlife Money Maker. Gail has So I just had to end the episode by asking her “What did you learn about yourself through this?” Her answer is in Episode #15!

Episode #14 - Steps to Set up a Small Business

Episode #14 - Steps to Set up a Small Business

Epiosde#14 Steps to Set up a Small Business

Hello "You Dont Lookers" and Welcome to Episode #14. One of the things that You Dont Lookers have in common is we have the courage to level up, to go out and do things others we know have not done, and we are financially fit. These traits are also common of entrepreneurs and small business owners. In keeping in touch with many of my classmates from Cathy Heller's You Were Made to Do This course, many of them are building up their audience during free offerings and are working toward getting paid for those offerings. Naturally this leads them to ask questions such as "Do I have to capture that money in a separate account? How do I withhold taxes?" When I began to mention things like "You also buy the Domain name" their ears perked up and they had more questions. Questions that I wished I had known the answers to all in one place at one time when I started to operate Koastal SUP Yoga (which is an LLC btw)! So here you are my loves---may this information be a useful resource to get you going on the path to being your own boss! You can email me your questions about this episode at info@koastalsupyoga.com or DM me on IG @koastalsupyoga; I will be glad to help you out! It may seem overwhelming but you can do this!

Before you take your real world dive into the topics covered in this episode, you should already have a business model developed (check out the Harvard Business Review for examples) and have the proper certifications and/or insurance required for your business or profession that will be the basis of the services you offer. Example: yoga teacher certification and yoga teacher insurance, etc.

Please share this episode with your friends and subscribe to this podcast wherever you get your podcasts—iTunes, Spotify, etc. Until next week- Namaste.

Episode #13 - P.A.R.T.Y. with Erika Friday!

Hello "You Don't Look"ers ! Welcome to Episode#13! This week we continue exploring the topic of habits; specifically: What Pre-Covid-19 habits do you  still use? What new habits have you developed since Covid-19? and Do you see yourself keeping any of these “new” habits once “normal” life resumes? When I asked these questions to the amazing people Ive come to know in Cathy Heller’s “You Were Made to Do This” class, someone saw my post and tagged Erika Friday. Erika is an entrepreneur with a corporate background that pre-Covid-19, aka the “olden days” had a seamless system in place that included pre-school (for her 3 yr old son and 5 yr old daughter), me time, date night and family time. Episode #12 - Interview with Author and Writer Oswald Perez - Habits that help you stay focused during this Covid-19 Lock down

Episode #12 - Interview with Author and Writer Oswald Perez - Habits that help you stay focused during this Covid-19 Lock down

Episode #12 - Hello "You Dont Look"ers! The focus of this episode is habits--which habits are we using to help keep us focused and grounded during this Crazy Covid-19 lock down. Specifically, which habits did you have before the Pandemic that you have been able to keep & which new ones have you developed? and..which of those new ones may you keep when life returns to "normal". I reached out to the group of people I have been blessed to meet in Cathy Heller's "You Were Made To Do This" course for some insight by posting the question "What habits did you have before Covid-19 that you have kept (how/why)? And What new habits have you developed since?" and would anyone be willing to share their responses with us as part of a podcast episode. Much to my delight, my new friend, the wicked talented NYC-based author and writer Mr. Oswald Perez, graciously accepted my offer! I definitely wanted to know what habits this smart man was using to stay focused while living in an apartment in the very city that is considered to be the country's Covid-19 hot spot. Oswald shares that he still gets up early each day and takes breaks at the same time(s) he did when he was working at the job he had outside of his home before the pandemic. He also shares that he now spends a lot of time "rummaging" through social media for inspiration for his creative writing pieces. If you are looking for a new favorite writer/author he is your guy! You can find him on IG at https://www.instagram.com/oswaldperez85/?hl=en and if you need more proof that he will be your new fav writer check out his blog "Underneath the Security Blanket" at  https://perezoswald.wordpress.com/ Oh!  And...wait for it.....he is also scheduled to be a guest Cathy Heller's podcast  https://www.dontkeepyourdayjob.com/podcast/  --how cool is that?! Thank you Oswald for your time and graciousness!

Please tell us what habits you have that are keeping you focused during this time by emailing me at info@koastalsupyoga.com. I invite you to share the podcast, leave a 5-stare review and subscribe on Spotify, Apply iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

Episode #11 -- Using a Training Mindset to Stay Sane During this Crazy Covid-19 Lock-down

Episode #11 -- Using a Training Mindset to Stay Sane During this Crazy Covid-19 Lock-down

Hello and Welcome to the "You Don't Look Podcast" Episode #11-- Using a Training Mindset to Stay Sane During this Crazy Covid-19 Lock-down. As a certified fitness coach and yoga teacher I've noticed that Ive been using some of the same tools when I am training clients or teaching students to keep me sane and grounded during this Crazy Covid-19 Lock-down. I am sharing these tips to help you during this time and please email me at info@koastalsupyoga.com to share your tips with me or leave me a voice memo over on Anchor. Overall I have kept doing what had worked for me pre-Covid. I get up the same time every Mon, Wed and Fri to work out for 50 minutes, shower then head to my work desk. These days that varies as I can sleep a bit later because I dont have to travel to the gym, but I have to cut my lunch break short since the grocery store doesnt open as early these days. Once I am up, I look at my "to-do" list and see if my energy level matches it for the day. If yes, I show up for myself by doing the tasks I had planned to the best of my ability. If not, I allow myself to pivot and change my schedule for the day (this is easier on a weekend). I do some of my favorite moves (just like in a work-out), I allow time to cool-down and I allow for Ups and Downs--right? Just like during a work out, on any given day you may not be spot-on for whatever reason, same is true now. Some days I just feel better than others! Please subscribe to the podcast, share it with your pals and leave us a review on iTunes, Spotify, Anchor or wherever you get your podcasts! Until next week, Namaste!

Episode #10 - Covid-19--Remembering it with new behaviors, words, feelings and different types of being dressed up

Hello "You Dont Look-ers" Welcome to Episode #10 where I explore the question posed by a friend I had the pleasure of meeting in Cathy Heller's business course https://www.cathyheller.com/madetodothis/, the always lovely Sarah Schwartz (find her on IG @schwartz_6) , who asked  "When all of this is over, what do you want to remember?" My first thought was I don't want to remember any of it, there is No Thing I want to remember about this time. Then I realized, whether I want to or not, there are things about this shelter-in place Pandemic time that I will remember. Join me as I explore the odd things that have come out of this, like toilet paper scarcity, pivoting from real world to a virtual one, words (odd, strange) and feelings (anxiety, anger) to describe this time, this experience, and musing about the "different types of being dressed up" (you know day PJ's vs night PJs).  Please subscribe, leave a review, share this podcast with your friends and tell me what topics you'd like to hear in future episodes. Until next time, Namaste.

Hello and welcome to the "You Dont Look..." Podcast Episode #8 join us for an interview with Dr. Mona Barbera.  Mona and I met in early March 2020 (which given how to Covid-19 Pandemic has developed since then seems like a life time ago) at the Paddlemonster Training Camp in Fort Pierce, FL. Check it out at https://www.paddlemonster.com/ --the 7 day camp was lead by @larrycaincanoe and @seychellesup. I was able to take the first 3 days of the camp and every morning I would see Mona and she would be out there kicking backside on her board. Which is what you would expect in paddleboard training camp --I mean Mona regularly trains with these athletes on her own via a virtual program. What made me notice Mona was her age...are you ready for this? Mona is 70! And ...she only got into paddling a couple of years ago and into fitness a year before that! Amazing! I had to have her on this podcast because she is so inspirational! She shares with us her life before finding paddling, her life since and how its up-leveled in an interesting way. If you would like to learn more about Mona head on over to http://www.monabarbera.com/. Stores are out of hand sanitizer, toilet paper and produce. Tune in to learn about some alternatives you can use and even enjoy (hint: chocolate). We also talk about the benefits of doing things scared and up-leveling. Leave us your comments on Spotify, iTunes or Google Podcasts and please leave a voice message on Anchor if thats where you find us. Got ideas for future shows? Please let me know! Namaste!

Episode #4 - Healthier Choices--Leveling Up by Doing it Scared

So you dont look your age and you do activities that are usually done by people younger than your age but I bet you also "up level" yourself, that is go up a level in your self confidence and self esteem, by trying and doing new things even though you are scared. Tune in to listen to common things many of us have done scared and up-leveled and to hear about how I recently did this thanks to Coach Larry Cain and Seychelle Webster of Pdl Mnster --which held a 3 day Paddlboard racing training camp in Fort Pierce, FL.

Episode #2 - What is your favorite way to stay fit and/or active?

One thing most people that don't look or act their biological age age have in common is that fitness or staying active is a lifestyle for them. What are your favorite ways to stay fit, to stay active and how do those change with the season (depending on where you live) and/or day(s) of the week? I share some of mine and how they have differed depending on where I've lived and with the days of the week. Mini Challenge--find time to do 10 minutes more of your favorite activity this week. Drop me a voice message on Anchor or drop a comment on Facebook or Spotify--tell me where you live, your favorite fitness activity and how they may change with the season and/or day(s) of the week--others want to know How You Dont Look....

You Dont Look... Join us as we get the conversation started about how to look & feel younger than our biological age. Episode #1

You Dont Look...49... People often say to me. My reply is "Well what did you think 49 would look like?" Ever see that 50 yr old gray haired guy surfing or that older lady out playing golf and say "Wow I hope I'm still doing that when I'm that age!" People like us--ages 49 to 69--that look and feel younger than their biological age have three generalities in common #1 - Fitness or staying active has been part of their daily routine for much of their lives, #2 They make healthier choices more times than not, that is they stop at one glass of wine, they only have two bites of cheesecake, etc.,  and #3 They practice self-care , that is they make and keep doctors appointments for preventative care like dental appointments, they un-plug from electronic devices, they have a social network, etc.  Join us as we get the conversation started on how you can set yourself up to be one of "lucky"ones.
