Today's episode I talk with occupational therapist and yoga teacher, Michelle Amussen. In this conversation we talk about the powerful ways we can utilize mindfulness everyday to prmote wellness. Michelle graduated in 2009 with her BS in Health Promotion and Education and later in 2013 with her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Utah. As a graduate student, she researched the benefits of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in helping individuals with depression and co-morbid substance abuse. Michelle currently works as an occupational therapist in the school district. She is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of yoga and mindfulness both emotionally and physically. Michelle has received specialized training in teaching mindfulness to children using Dr. Amy Saltzman’s, A Still Quiet Place, Curriculum; and Learning to Breathe: A Mindfulness Curriculum for Adolescent to Cultivate Emotion Regulation, Attention and Performance. She is a 200 RYT yoga instructor with additional trainings and certifications in trauma sensitive yoga classes and yoga for at risk youth through the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Center. Decision Making and Mindfulness: How to use mindfulness when you are overwhelmed with making decisions
In this episode I talk about the fact that I have been feeling overwhelmed with having to make so many decisions over this past year. The pandemic has made even small decisions into big ones. I noticed a feeling of exhaustion and overwhelm around decsion making and that had me turning to my mindfulness practice. I decided to rethink decisions and look at them as a chance to be curious and observe. I also talk about how we can practice this with our children.

Being Kind To Ourselves: Teaching our children to talk kindly to themselves starts with us.
In this episode I talk about the struggle to be kind to ourselves. I have noticed a trend in my classes that children and teens struggle to compliment themselves. I recently taught a full week of classes focused on saying kind things and found that many students could not say something nice about themselves. As I thought about this I realized I struggle with this too. This got me thinking about how I can help change that. In this episode I talk about how to utilize mindfulness practices with your child to help them transition more easily to bedtime. I will focus on three goals of the bedtime routine. The first is making connections with your child. Many children struggle at bedtime because it means separating from you. So I will give tips on how to emphasize your connection prior to bedtime. In this episode we take a deep dive into practicing yoga and mindfulness with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Margot has an extensive background in early childhood education that she brings to this conversation. We discuss the benefits of practicing yoga at the early stages of life. Such as, body awareness, learning to listen to our bodies signals, and learning to regulate our emotions and energy to just name a few. Margot also gives us great tips on how to both introduce these practrices and use them daily with our young children. We also chat about Margot's new children's book Cookie Doughga. Margot is a certified children's yoga and mindfulness teacher and author based on Long Island, NY with a background in early childhood education. She taught as a classroom teacher for over 10 years. In 2015 she left the classroom to become a full time yoga and mindfulness teacher. She mentors new children's yoga teachers, and leads professional development for educators and parents. Ask yourself questions about how you are feeling, what sensations you have in your body, notice things around you from this lens of curiosity. As we get curious about ourselves and what is around us we are kept in the present moment and therefor practicing mindfulness. In honor of Child Life Month in this episode we hear from Child Life Specialist, Lisa Ciarroca. She explains how a child life specialist works with children, adolesents, and families. We discuss how enxiety and grief may present themselves in our children and how to offer them support.
