Dr. Amy Meyers, LCSW-R Explains "Clinical Social Work"

Dr. Amy Meyers, LCSW-R Explains "Clinical Social Work"

Dr. Amy Meyers received her PhD and Masters in Social Work from Hunter College School of Social Work and trained for 10 years in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. She currently holds the credentials of LCSW-R. She has enjoyed 30 years working with diverse populations and considers it an honor to be invited into people’s emotional lives. Her direct practice, supervisory, and consultation experience include settings such as outpatient mental health, inpatient psychiatry, program development, child welfare, and family court. She specializes in a wide range of issues including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, divorce, family conflict, transitions, work and career issues, and loss and bereavement. She also specializes in working with sibling dynamics including abusive sibling relationships. Additionally, she has provided consultation and trainings for the Administration for Children’s Services and served as Clinical Director of Family Justice, a community and research-based organization.

While working from a psychodynamic perspective, she incorporates cognitive and behavioral approaches to provide a solution-focused approach. She firmly believes in creating a partnership towards the client’s goals. Her theoretical approach may vary depending on the client’s need and what works well for him or her. Dr. Meyer’s training allows her great flexibility in matching the method of intervention to the client’s need. Unlike the conventional “blank slate”, she utilizes an interactive style integrating supportive and exploratory techniques

She is a Professor and the Director of Field Education at Molloy University on Long Island, NY, where she teaches courses in Human Behavior Across the Life Span; Diversity: Oppression, Privilege, and Social Justice; Clinical Practice; and, Field Instruction. Her interest in family issues led her to carry out an extensive qualitative research study on sibling abuse, and she has presented nationally on the topic. Her work on transforming a Long Island school district's culturally responsive education resulted in her being awarded the Educating Communities/Diversity Award from Long Island Business News.

She is currently having a great time producing a podcast titled "What Would Dr. Meyers Do? Insights not Oversights" which launched November 2022. She focuses on clinical issues and can be accessed through her website (on the "podcast" tab) or at www.linktr.ee/drmeyerspod, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

LI News Radio 103.9 FM_Radio Jobline Host Scott Passeser W/Silas kelly

Many thanks to Mr. Scott Passeser, Producer & Host of “Radio Jobline”. The Show airs every Saturday from 2 to 3 PM on LI News 103.9, FM.  Scott continually offers his platform to the Social Work profession!!! He is keenly aware of the vital role Social Workers play in society and never hesitates to help spread the word!!! I also appreciate him having me back on the show for a fourth time!!

The main topics of this interview that Scott and I discuss center around Social Work salaries, Social Worker satisfaction in the profession, and why it’s important to improve both. We also talk about the dire need for well-trained, well-paid, motivated Social Workers.

Earlier this year The NY State Chapter of NASW released a study on the current state of the Social Work profession here in NY.  The report was authored by Ms. Olivia Knox, NASW-NYS Chapter Policy Coordinator. Some of her report’s information is alluded to in this interview.

Also, the National Association of Social Workers had an independent agency (IPSOS) conduct a public opinion satisfaction survey. The results pointed to the fact that the general public has an overall favorable view of the profession.  It also pointed out that many in the general public do not know all the roles Social Workers play.  Some of that.

Make sure to listen to this engaging and informative interview in it’s entirety!!

Real Talk - A Discussion About Social Work Salaries

Real Talk - A Discussion About Social Work Salaries

Kelsunn Communications, Inc (www.kelsunn.org) invites you to this indepth and informative interview about the inequities in Social Work Salaries. Here is a little of what our three distinguished guests will be sharing:

Olivia Knox, MSW: NASW-NYS Chapter Policy Coordinator (naswnys.org)

She is one of the co-authors of a detailed research project on Social Worker Salaries. She says, “A new report shows social workers are not being paid equal to similar professions. The report, from the National Association of Social Workers New York State Chapter finds 34% of social workers surveyed are at the same salary they were when they started their job. Knox adds that, “many feel that “Stagnant Wages” are why social workers are leaving the field.

Adrienne LoPresti, LCSW-R: Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center (www.yesccc.org)

She shares some other interesting insights on this topic.  She shares that one of the reasons “why the inequity in salaries exists is because Social Work is seen as being a mostly “female-dominated” profession. She shares her thoughts on what is needed for reform within the various systems of influence such as the government sectors, NYS Dept. of Education, Medicaid, and Private Insurances.

Randi DiAntonio, LMSW: Vice President of the NYS Public Employees Federation (PEF) (pef.org)

She talks about a major research project her organization did. She shares the data showing the impact that inequitable salaries are having on the public Social Work profession. She states that “More than 70% of survey respondents indicated their work location has at least one vacancy for a social worker. As a result, social workers who choose to stay on the job are working harder than ever.

Kelsunn Communications Presents This "Social Work Month 2023" Production

Kelsunn Communications, Inc. Invites you to enjoy this tribute to the Profession of Social Work and a salute to all the professional social workers in the country.  Thank you for all that you do.  Happy Social Work Month!!!!  https://youtu.be/iY-wbrvhKHU

This year’s Social Work Month theme is “Social Work Breaks Barriers,” to highlight how social workers have enriched our society by empowering people and communities to overcome hurdles that prevent them from living life to the fullest.

The annual Social Work Month campaign in March is a time to inform public, policymakers, and legislators about how social workers have always broken barriers when it comes to the services they provide in an array of sectors, including hospitals and mental health centers, federal, state, and local government, schools, community centers, and social service agencies.

People become social workers because they have a strong desire to help others and make society a better place. Social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). More than 700,000 professional social workers are hard at work nationwide, but that number is expected to rise to almost 800,000 by 2030, BLS said.

Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton: The Ditchdigger's Daughters - Black History Month 1997 - Re-Air

Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton: The Ditchdigger's Daughters - Black History Month 1997 - Re-Air

The Ditchdigger’s Daughters is the story of Donald Thornton, a laborer, and his wife Tass, a domestic, who managed to shepherd their six daughters into careers of professional status.  Consider the results of their efforts: Two physicians, an attorney, a court stenographer, a dentist and a registered nurse.

Written by middle daughter Yvonne S. Thornton, M. D., The Ditchdigger’s Daughters is far more than a goody goody story. Although music, self sacrifice and upward mobility all figure prominently in this memoir it also merits readers’ attention for its effective recreation of the characters, its important messages, its genuineness, its overall excellence, and its inspiration.

The book contains plot turns that everyone can identify with.  Parts of the story even read like a thriller.  When the two oldest daughters’ defect from the family because of Donald’s stringency, they start a chain of reactions that threaten the viability of this heretofore loving and stable unit.  Donald becomes verbally and emotionally abusive to Tass.  As a result Tass experiences a depression that necessitates clinical treatment.  The remaining daughters were filled with fear and confusion at these events.  The Thornton family found themselves facing a crisis of epic proportions: would this black family survive?  The answer is not as neatly packaged as a sitcom, and reflects the messy fits and starts of real people living real lives.

Yvonne was the first to fulfil her father’s dream of becoming a physician.  Her recounting of her climb to become a respected and successful Obstetrician-Gynecologist is an endearing portrait of a physician as a young woman.  As a black female doctor she suffered many rude comments and one remark, made by a white male colleague who said, "I assume you know what you’re doing", was particularly distressing. "I arrived back home crying and raging’. If I’d been a man, he wouldn’t have talked to me like that.  If I’d been white, he wouldn’t have questioned my ability to do what was right."

Since the book’s publication in 1995 it has received much acclaim as a Literary Guild Selection and a Pulitzer Prize nominated book.  A for television movie was made with Carl Lumbly portraying Donald Thornton.

Listen carefully to this ditchdigger’s daughter.  Dr. Yvonne S.Thornton is a woman who has walked this walk and knows of which she speaks.

Nassau County, NY Legislator Carrie Solages - "A Friend of Social Work"

Nassau County, NY Legislator Carrie Solages - "A Friend of Social Work"

Kelsunn Communications (www.kelsunn.org), is honored to bring you this interview featuring the "The Honorable Carrie Solages" Legislator of the 3rd District of Nassau County, NY

The Honorable Carrie Solages is the second of four children born to Philippe and Micheline Solages, an immigrant couple who came to New York from Haiti in search of political and economic stability, risking their lives to create a better life for their family.

Legislator Solages graduated with academic honors at the top of his class from Carey High School in Franklin Square. He then attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. from 1997 to 2001.

He recalls his greatest accomplishment during his time at Georgetown coming only two days shy of his graduation in 2001. After almost four years of organizing and appealing to the administration, Carrie learned that his efforts to receive funding from alumni were finally a success and the University thereby cultivated an interdisciplinary program in African American Studies.

Legislator Solages went on to attend Boston College Law School. While there he focused on Constitutional law, Civil Rights Law and First Amendment law. Selected by Harvard Law School and Boston College for a joint program in legal historical studies, Carrie produced research cataloged by both institutions. Simultaneously, the ambitious law student worked as a legal intern at Catholic Charities of Boston.

Carrie returned to New York after law school and served as an Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County. In 2006, Carrie began working with the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) and currently serves as Vice President of the organization.

That year he also joined the family law firm of Solages & Solages, P.C. In 2007, Carrie was appointed to serve as Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights of Nassau County by County Executive Tom Suozzi.

My Most Impactful Social Worker, The Late Mr. Dalton Murchison!!!

My Most Impactful Social Worker, The Late Mr. Dalton Murchison!!!

To Everyone: This interview is a tribute to a professional Social Worker who had a profound impact on my life. His name is Mr. Dalton Murchison. Last year I was fortunate to re-connect with him after many, many years. I had many Social Workers through the years. But he had the greatest impact on me. Mr. Dalton Murchison. Always went above and beyond while serving as my Social Worker.

After reconnecting with him I, I was fortunate enough to interview back in May of last year. I featured him in Social Work Fellowship project I worked on from November 2020 to June 2021. The final project premiered on June 18, 2021. For the project I interviewed 6 professional Social Workers. Mr. Murchison’s interview was the capstone of the project. I featured him as a Social Worker who made a huge difference in my life. I also highlighted him during the NASW-NYS Long Island Regional Awards Ceremony that evening.

Many in his family witnessed how I highlighted and detailed what Mr. Murchison did for me and the impact he had on my life at a young age. Sadly, on July 18, 2021 one month to the day that I featured him Mr. Murchison passed away. The documentary and the awards ceremony were aired all over the country and globally. I am so glad I got to publicly acknowledge and thank Mr. Murchison before he passed.  Please make sure to listen, comment, download, and share this story that has so much meaning to me. Thank you.
