As I’m finishing my cup of coffee here on my screen porch, this anecdote popped into my mind today. I don’t know why, but for some reason I started thinking about this story with new eyes. I’ve shared this story so many times, but I’ve never thought about it from this perspective. Maybe this can help you.
Don't set up a false dichotomy between making money and being concerned for people. Compassion and business are not at odds. You don't need to choose one or the other. You can do both. Often, growing your business can help a lot of people.
Sometimes, life gives you natural stopping points for time blocking.
Work on this task until the kids get off the bus.
Think about this coupon strategy until it's time for that meeting.
Work on that UX problem until timer on the oven says that the lasagna is done.
Work on the app (from my laptop, on the couch) until the baseball game is finished.
Ahhh, the best laid plans.
Sometimes, life throws you a curve ball and you accidentally pull an all-nighter.
Big picture thinking, vs. task-oriented focus.
Sometimes, you just gotta keep your nose to the grind stone and execute on the vision. Sometimes, though, you need to rethink that overall vision.
Here's where it gets tough... you can't do both at the same time.
