Music Ministers

This week we're exploring the miraculous gift and conduit of music, and the ways in which God moves through music to reach and help his people.

Here are some resources to help you dig into this week's topic on your own:

1. Raised Catholic Recommends music playlist on Spotify - faith music from lots of genres/moods

2. Green Noise playlist on Spotify

3. Song: Front Porch, by Vontmer - check out all of his music, lots in that green frequency range, but this one is magic for little ones.

4. Video clip - JAWS - With and Without Music featuring Richard Dreyfuss and John Williams

5. Song: Pitter Patter Goes the Rain, by Christy Nockels. I've taught this song hundreds of times and never had a teacher or parent NOT say that there is magic in this song. Nockels herself says that she recorded a track of herself reading scripture or encouraging words in each of the songs on this album that you can't audibly hear but you can feel. Listen for yourself.

6. Journal question: when has music elicited a response in me that I did not expect? What kind of music was it? Where was I? How do I explain that reaction?

7. A primer on green, white, brown, and pink music/sound from Soundly

8. A few examples of music that unexpectedly ministered to me:

Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Boston Pops Orchestra

Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Second Movement, Andante (When I first heard this, I thought it sounded like what we'll hear in Heaven. I still do.)

Rainbow, by Kacey Musgraves

Four, by Sleeping At Last (lots of 'hidden tracks' in his music as well - hear him tell the story of this one in this podcast episode - how it was made)

Let's Talk About Lent - 2024

Let's Talk About Lent - 2024

This week I'll bring you an episode from way back in 2021 that I hope will help us to frame our Lent in a positive and hopeful way.

If you'd like to connect with me, find me on Instagramat my website, or on Substack. If you'd like to help support this podcast financially, there's a way to do just that on my page at buymeacoffee.com! Thanks for sharing, subscribing, rating, and reviewing, as this helps our community to grow.

Thanks as always to my friend, Peter Vaughan-Vail, for providing the beautiful harp music you hear in this and every episode. Today we're looking at Lenten disciplines with an eye toward the growth of what we want to see in the end - in ourselves, our families, our church, community, country and world.  And we're giving ourselves space for light and hope in this liturgical season which literally means 'springtime'.

Here are some resources I hope will make your Lent more encouraging and fruitful:

1. Helpful, grounded (and often funny!) daily Lenten video reflections from author Kate Bowler - you can also find them on Kate's Instagram

2. Be Kind - a helpful Lenten practice video from Fr. James Martin

3. Best Lent Ever - daily videos from Dynamic Catholic

4. Song: Better Days by Ant Clemons, Justin Timberlake and Kirk Franklin

5. Song: Someday Soon, by Wilder Woods

6. Song: O My Soul, by Audrey Assad

7. Podcast: Abiding Together

8. Lenten Practice: Watch this tulip video, then: buy flowers for yourself (yes, for you!), put them in your kitchen, and let them be your teacher: spring is on the way, friend!

9: Instagram Account: Follow my friend The Bluebird of Happiness on Instagram for more hope and light in your feed!

10. My current favorite cover of Here Comes the Sun - search for more, they will make your heart happy!

11. Lenten Practice: Conversations with God journal, start a new page and at the top write one or more of the following prompts, then just write until your hand is sore or you feel the loving voice of God creeping in and making Himself known to you:

What habits or practices do I have today that are not serving me? How can I let them go?

What do I want my life (or my family or community) to look and feel like on Easter weekend? How can I move in that direction now?

How can I serve other people using my unique gifts? What would be a good first step today?

Contemplate the fruit and vegetables you eat and how they grew and made their way to you. Contemplate the people whose paths cross yours. Contemplate your miraculous body and all that it does for you. Treat today as an adventure and notice all you can. Breathe and take it all in, and give thanks to God today.

Life Well Lived

Life Well Lived

This week we remember our friends who have gone before us, the ones whose lives we really admired. When we consider their 'yes' that is the throughline of a life well lived, we can be more intentional about what we say 'yes' to, and the ways in which we want to live now to be remembered then.

If the impossible story of God becoming a human is true, then that changes everything, for everyone, forever. I am particularly mindful this week of those who feel unwelcome at church or those for whom Christmas might be a particular struggle - I pray you will feel the truth of Emmanuel - of God with us (all of us!), both inside and outside of church walls.

Advent - Simple Gifts

Advent - Simple Gifts

This week I've been a bit under the weather, so I'm bringing you an older episode from 2021, all about how to really prepare for Christmas. In this giving season, let's tune our hearts to how God is calling us to live these hope-peace-joy-love weeks well and to be present with our sisters and brothers with whatever we have.

Here are some resources I hope will help you to engage with this week's topic in a deeper way for yourself:

In this season, our minds turn toward giving, and in this episode we'll talk about the what, where, when, how, and why we give as people of faith. Let's be intentional to give well this year in a way that benefits the recipients of our giving as well as ourselves.

1. As promised, "Christmas Morning" from Saturday Night Live, 2020

2. Song: Simple Gifts, Traditional - Yo-Yo Ma

3. Song: Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland, John Williams, Boston Pops Orchestra

4. Look at (and research using a service such as Charity Navigator) charities that resonate with your talent, interest, and resources and give to them directly, as gifts, or in honor of loved ones. If you're local to me - My Brother's Keeper is a good place to give at this time of year and year-round.

5. A short piece I wrote in 2015 about listening to our inner voice to direct our giving, divine reciprocity, and about finding God in a grocery store (which I do all the time): Pineapples, Orange Soda, Chicken Salad

6. All about St. Nicholas, Gift Giver, from St. Nicholas Center

7. Song: Give a Little Bit, by Supertramp (How does knowing we're all "on our way back home" affect how you give?)

8. Journal prompts:

As I look back on my life, how does my own lived experience inform how and to whom I give?

If I've suffered hardship (as we all have), how can I turn that experience for the good by investing in and helping my community in a specific way?

How can I care for myself well in this season so that my giving comes from a place of health and not depletion this year?

What am I good at? What do I have? What do I know? How could I use these things to make the life of someone else better?

9. Video: The Joy of Giving: effects of giving on our brains, by Big Think

10: Song: In the Bleak Midwinter - Worcester Cathedral Choir, Christina Rossetti, Gustav Holst

Pray Without Ceasing

Pray Without Ceasing

This week, as we enter into the first Vatican meeting on the Synod on Synodality, a meeting long-time Vatican watchers are saying could be the most significant church event since Vatican II, I am finding myself thinking about Paul's call to 'pray without ceasing'. In our busy lives, what does praying without ceasing actually look like, is it something we would even want to do, and what is the good fruit that comes from prayer for us and for our Church?

If you'd like to connect with me, find me on Instagramat my website, or on Substack. What Happens in the Wilderness

What Happens in the Wilderness

This week we explore what happens in a time of spiritual wandering, disconnection from a church community, or wrestling with the ideas of practices of faith. Some call this time faith deconstruction but it sure feels like a kind of wilderness. It's a place no one wants to be, but if we find ourselves here, there are ways we can use a wilderness time well.

If you'd like to connect with me, find me on Instagramat my website, or on Substack. Dear One, may you have the gift of holy sight,

the vision of what might yet be.

Yes, the emptiness is there.

It could have been different, but this is what it is

and there is just a little moment here - a half a breath

where something new might be made, might be seen.

Just give it a little room to be.

There is nothing mechanical about living.

There is no step-by-step process by which good things can be found.

There is no paint-by-number on this one.

All we have is the strange truth that somewhere in us,

because we are made good

is the ability to make.

All we need to do is just give it a minute to be born.

The Dance

The Dance

This week I'll compare the experience of a mass to a meal at a restaurant, and I'll ask us all to consider the part we play in making any communal event into a dance. I hope it's a blessing to you.

5. Journal questions:

What small thing can I do today to make an everyday interaction into a dance?

Where is God asking me to be lighter and more playful? Where is He inviting me to dance?

What did I notice today about how people were serving me? How can I return an act of service to someone else?

Pentecost: The Amazing Movement of God

Pentecost: The Amazing Movement of God

This week we're taking a look back to episode 77: Pentecost Basics, and remind ourselves of the great gift that it's not all up to us. In a story I'll tell, we'll see that God makes a way, and it's sometimes it's a way we could never have predicted or made on our own, but it's so good.

Repost: The Spiritual Practice of Mothering

Repost: The Spiritual Practice of Mothering

In the wake of Mother's Day, I'm sharing this older episode on the holy calling of mothering. If you mother any other person in any way, you help make the world go round and this one is for you.

This week we're exploring the spiritual practice of mothering, a practice that is accessible to all humans as we undergo to care for others and help them grow. We'll examine references in the Bible to God as mother, and look to God's example to lead us forward in the necessary and holy work of mothering and being mothered, too.

What We Have in Common

What We Have in Common

Who God Actually Is

Who God Actually Is

This week we'll look at the rich Gospel readings from the Octave of Easter and learn the importance of moving into an understanding of who God actually is rather than the God we make that mirrors us and what we want Him to be. The journey from 'but we had hoped' to 'hearts burning within us' is available to all of us.

1. If you'd like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation this week, you should be able to find it offered at a number of area parishes, retreat houses, missions, shrines, Catholic colleges, and hospitals. 2. In addition, check your area for Eucharistic Adoration, Stations of the Cross, services for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, and other Lenten programming.
