Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Competition

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Competition

On this episode of the Youth Perspective, we speak with Mrs. Crystal Darling-Sargent Communications Officer and Bahamas Environmental Steward Scholar Christopher Clarke from (B.R.E.E.F). We speak about quite a number of events thats up comming. Don't miss out! The deadline for the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Competition entries is fast approaching on April 14th.
Capture the moment with an environmental photo, video, or essay focusing on climate change, marine pollution, or loss of biodiversity. Your chance to win national recognition and one of the top 3 grand prizes awaits!
Submit your entry to
crystal@breef.org and register here:
https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSc4CHGlJGvOuB.../viewform
Visit breef.org for more information on YRE Programme. Also we discuss the Spiny Lobster Closed Season. Which means that during the period of April 1st through July 31st it is an offence for persons to take, capture, have in possession, kill, or offer any fresh or live crawfish for sale.
The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, commonly known to Bahamians as crawfish, is the largest fishery, and an important contributor to the economy. It provides income to many fishers, seafood vendors, processors, and exporters. It is also a popular delicacy for Bahamians and visitors alike, so we must protect this species' population.
The closed season for the spiny lobster corresponds with peak breeding times for crawfish species. Harvesting crawfish during this time reduces the reproductive capacity of the species. To uphold Spiny lobster populations, we ask you to join BREEF and support the closed season by choosing a different dish! For more information on fisheries regulations, visit our website breef.org, or download the Fish Rules App for all Bahamian fisheries regulations. Lastly, the Earth Day Snorkel, Get ready to immerse yourself into the underwater world with BREEF on Earth Day! Join us for an unforgettable snorkeling adventure at Saunders Beach. Explore our marine ecosystems as we celebrate our planet's biodiversity and work towards a sustainable future.
What to Expect:
-Snorkel gear will be provided for all participants.
- Opportunities for community service hours are available.
- Bring your reusable water bottle and sunscreen to stay hydrated and protected while enjoying the day's activities.
Let's make a difference together and create lasting memories beneath the waves! Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to connect with our earth this #EarthDay2024. See you there!
*To participate in our Snorkels participants must be 8 years of age or older. Tune in as we discuss all of these topics and more on this edition of the Youth Perspective. Tune in and enjoy!

WORLD HEARING DAY 2024

WORLD HEARING DAY 2024

World Hearing Day 2024

On this episode of the Youth Perspective, we bring awareness to World Hearing Day 2024 under the theme: Changing mindsets:
Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all!
World Hearing Day 2024 will focus on overcoming the challenges posed by societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets through awareness-raising and information-sharing, targeted at the public and healthcare providers. Globally, over 80% of ear and hearing care needs remain unmet.
Unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual cost of nearly US$1 trillion globally. Deeply ingrained societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets are key factors that limit efforts for preventing and addressing hearing loss.
Changing mindsets related to ear and hearing care is crucial to improving access and mitigating the cost of unaddressed hearing loss. I had the fantastic opportunity to speak with Dr. Brittney Jones and Dr. Treasure Mckinney as we discussed this amazing day! Tune in and join the conversation. #worldhearingday2024

THE IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING WITH DR. BLAIR WOODSIDE

THE IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING WITH DR. BLAIR WOODSIDE

Breastfeeding and complementary feeding

Poor nutrition during the early stages of the life-course can lead to extensive and irreversible damage to physical growth and brain development.  On the other hand, good nutrition has a positive effect.  Breastfeeding is the optimal way of feeding babies, offering them the nutrients they need in the right balance, as well as offering protection against disease.

In 2012 the World Health Assembly (WHA) approved the global nutrition target of increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of age to at least 50% by 2025. The World Health Organization recommends that babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, followed by introduction of nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods, and with continued breastfeeding up to two years old or beyond.

Breastfeeding for more than 6 months or longer compared to no or shorter breastfeeding is associated with a reduction of childhood leukemia of 19% .

Babies who are breastfed are 60 percent less likely to die from SIDS compared to those not breastfeed. The effect is even greater for infants exclusively breastfed.

A 30 year follow-up of a cohort captured at birth showed that adults who had been breastfed earned higher wages, an effect mediated through an increase in years of schooling.

Workplace policies in support of breastfeeding increase employee retention, performance, loyalty, productivity and morale.

Adults who were breastfed as children score 3.3 points higher on cognitive development indicators, which leads to more years of schooling.

Breastfeeding leaves no carbon footprint. Breast-milk is renewable and produced and fed to the baby without pollution, packaging, or waste.

Beyond providing perfect nutrition and protection against infection and death, constituents in breast milk likely affect epigenetic programming at a critical time when an infant’s gen expression is being developed for life.

“If a new vaccine became available that could prevent 1 million or more child deaths a year, and that was moreover cheap, safe, administered orally, and required no cold chain, it would become an immediate public health imperative. Breastfeeding can do all this and more13.”

Longer breastfeeding reduces the risk of overweight/obesity by 13%, helping to fight chronic diseases caused by obesity. It also lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes by 35%14.

Women who breastfeed compared with women who don’t breastfeed or breastfeed less have a 32% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a 26% lower risk of breast cancer and a 37% lower risk of ovarian cancer15.

The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes provides guidelines to prevent the inappropriate marketing of breastmilk substitutes, including infant formula, feeding bottles, nipples, follow-on milks and related products16. It needs to be legislated and monitored. When manufacturers and distributors are in violation, they should be sanctioned.

Mother-child bonding is enhanced when mothers interact with their infants while breastfeeding. Longer breastfeeding is associated with more sensitive maternal responsiveness and the security that comes with attachment.

7TH UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK WITH BRITTNEY JONES

7TH UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK WITH BRITTNEY JONES

#RethinkMobility

Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with around 1.3 million people killed and as many as 50 million people injured each year. For people aged 5-29 years, there is no greater threat to their lives. Globally, 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists.

The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 reflects an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. It highlights that they can be prevented by addressing the whole of the transport system, taking action to ensure safe roads, vehicles and behAviours as well as to improve emergency care.

WHO, in collaboration with partners, organizes periodic UN Global Road Safety Weeks. This 7th edition focuses on sustainable transport, in particular the need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport. Road safety is both a prerequisite for and an outcome of this shift.

WHO invites all road safety and sustainable mobility partners to mark the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week by organizing events and activities and sharing messages and materials on social media with the hashtags:

  • #RethinkMobility
  • #StreetsforLife
  • #RoadSafety

WORLD TOBACCO MONTH WITH DR. ANN ROLLE

WORLD TOBACCO MONTH WITH DR. ANN ROLLE

WORLD TOBACCO MONTH

31 May is World No Tobacco Day

This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a "a world no-smoking day." In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.
