Episode 346: Coach Mike Hilmer (The Relentless Pressure Defensive System)

Episode 346: Coach Mike Hilmer (The Relentless Pressure Defensive System)

Let me briefly introduce you to Coach Mike Hilmer.

Coach Hilmer has been the head varsity boys coach at North Linn HS for the past 25 years.

He created his Relentless Pressure System which involves Run, Jump, and Trapping philosophy. And over the past 9 years has had unprecedented success with it, including:

  • 7 Straight State Finals Appearances

  • 3 State Titles

  • National High School Coach Of The Year Finalist 2019

  • 5 Time State Coach Of The Year

It hasn't always been this way for Coach Hilmer. Before he began using his pressure system, his teams were right around .500

In fact, for the first 16 years as the Varsity Head Coach his teams:

  • Averaged less than 50 ppg

  • Averaged 12+ TO per game

For the last 9 years since installing his Relentless Pressure System his teams:

  • Scored 80+ ppg

  • Average less than 8 TO pg

  • Increased FG % from 41% to 56%

  • Led the state in scoring average 5 years, and were runner up twice

  • Defensively they led the state twice in fewest points allowed and every year have been in the top10 for fewest points allowed

Yes... you read that right! He led the state in offense AND defense

Episode 343: Coach Rhonda Farney (The Twilight Zone Press Defense)

Episode 343: Coach Rhonda Farney (The Twilight Zone Press Defense)

RHONDA FARNEY—Coach Farney has the most career victories of any active girls’ coach in Texas and the nation with a record of 1,283 victories and 371 losses (.770 winning percentage) and sixth on the all-time career list as compiled by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

She has been a high school head coach for 49 seasons. In 36 years at Georgetown High School, her teams have posted 36-consecutive 20-win seasons and 35-straight berths in the UIL state playoffs, including seven appearances in the state tournament—highlighted by a Class 4A state title during the 2012-2013 season that was climaxed by a come-from-behind 65-60 victory over Dallas Lincoln in the finals to finish with a 34-4 record.

She has had more than 86 players compete on the collegiate level, however; her most prized accomplishment is helping over 64 former players to enter the coaching profession. The Howard Payne summa cum laude graduate—still as a teenager—also has served as the head coach at Goldthwaite and Ozona. She was the only girls’ basketball coach on the Goldthwaite staff and coached the seventh, eighth, junior varsity and varsity. Farney also coached track at both schools.

Farney has earned numerous coaching honors, including receiving the prestigious John Wooden Legacy Award presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in March 2022.  In addition, she was honored as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pat Summitt National High School Coach of the Year in 2017 and the National Federation of High Schools 2013 National Coach of the Year as well as being inducted into the Howard Payne University Hall of Fame, Texas Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  She served as a head coach for the 2003 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/Nike All-America Game in Hartford, CT, in addition to being active in USA Basketball on both the coaching and committee levels. Recently, she was named the Texas High School Coaches Association Female State Coach of the Year for 2022 and was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Omaha, Nebraska, in July 2023.

Also on the national scene, Farney has chaired the USA Basketball Cadet and Youth Committee, helping select players and coaches for the Summer Youth Development Olympic Festival. In summer 2001, she was one of two high school coaches named by the USA Basketball Women’s Collegiate Committee to serve as floor coach for the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was assistant coach for the 2005 USA Basketball Women’s Youth Development Olympic Festival, where her team won the gold medal.

Farney was named head coach for the April 2003 WBCA/Nike All-American game in Hartford, Connecticut. Previously, in April 1996, she traveled to Philadelphia as assistant coach for the WBCA/Nike All-American game. Farney served four years on the WBCA and NFCA Board of Directors and completed a term on the NFCA Basketball Rules Committee. In addition, she was the first female to serve as the president for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association, the largest male and female basketball organization in the nation as well as serving as president of the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Coach Farney also holds the position of girls’ athletics coordinator at Georgetown and is married to Dr. Bill Farney, retired executive director of the University Interscholastic League, the ruling body of extra-curricular activities in Texas.

Episode 337: Coach Tiek Fields (Head Women's Basketball Coach Truett McConnell University) Cleveland, GA

Episode 337: Coach Tiek Fields (Head Women's Basketball Coach Truett McConnell University) Cleveland, GA

Tiek Fields enters his fourth season as Head Women’s Basketball Coach in 2021-2022 after spending four seasons as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at TMU.

The 2015-16 unit won the program’s first-ever conference tournament game, posting a 72-71 victory over St. Andrews University in the opening round of the AAC tournament. The 2016-17 squad recorded the second most wins and second the best record in Truett McConnell’s NAIA era, including a school record eight victories in January 2017.
The 2014-15 Bears set a school record with 17 wins and recorded the program’s first winning season as a four-year NAIA institution. A tie for second place in the final Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season standings that year was the program’s best finish as well.
Nationally in 2014-15, the Bears recorded 13 more victories than the 2013-14 campaign and the fifth best jump in wins for all NAIA Division II programs. Truett McConnell ranked nationally in the top 20 amongst NAIA Division II programs in five statistical categories: Field goal percentage defense (No. 10), total rebound margin (No. 12), defensive rebounds per game (No. 12), 3-point field goal percentage defense (No. 14), and total rebounds per game (No. 18).
In 2013-14, the TMU Bears were a young and talented group that held two All-Freshman Players and a 3rd Team All-Conference Player in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).
While assisting Jon Yeh the Bears program also set the school records for points scored in a single game (2015-16), points allowed in a single game (set twice during the 2014-15 season), and the fewest turnovers in a season (2016-17).
Off the court, the Bears have maintained the turnaround. The Bears lead all AAC men’s basketball programs with 12 AAC All-Academic awards since 2014-15. This includes five individuals earning that honor in each of the last two seasons. The program produced its first-ever NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete in 2015-16, then saw four individuals earn that elite honor in 2016-17.
Prior to Coaching Fields attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia, where he was a four-year player for the Lions. During his time at Emmanuel he was apart of 3 National Tournament Teams, two NCCAA appearances winning one and one NAIA Tournament appearance.
Fields graduated from Emmanuel College with a B.S in Computer Information Systems, and received his M.S in Sport Management from Missouri Baptist University.

Episode 318: Coach Taylor Jackson (Head Boy's Basketball Coach Social Circle High School) Social Circle, GA "How to Build a Champion in a Small School Setting"

Episode 318: Coach Taylor Jackson (Head Boy's Basketball Coach Social Circle High School) Social Circle, GA "How to Build a Champion in a Small School Setting"

-Piedmont Academy (2008)

-Covenant College, BA Mathematics (2012)

-Covenant College, MAT (2013)

Experience

-Soddy-Daisy Middle School | 7th Grade Math (2013-2014)

-Newton High School | Algebra 2 & Geometry, Asst Boys Basketball Coach (2014-2017)

-Social Circle High School | Algebra 2, AMDM, Algebra 1, Geometry, Head Boys Basketball Coach (2017-Current)

Taylor Jackson has always loved basketball and been passionate about the game. He was a gym rat who grew up playing in recreation leagues and on both the high school and college levels.

But even he was shocked at the basketball-centric world he found himself in when he landed his first job as a coach as an assistant under Rick Rasmussen at Newton County in 2014.

It was that mindset Jackson brought with him when he arrived at Social Circle as an assistant under Brian Anderson in 2017 to help turn around a program that had hit rock bottom. Social Circle hadn’t advanced to state in five years, not even been close. During that stretch, they had a combined record of 23-99.

Five years later, the Redskins find themselves 23-0 heading into the final week of the regular season and ranked No. 1 in the state in one prep poll. With a win over Washington-Wilkes last week, they secured the top seed in the Region 8-A Public tournament and a third consecutive berth in the state tournament.

When Jackson took over in the next year, he inherited an uber-talented group of youngsters who not only had varsity experience but who understood and accepted the high expectations.

Led by Branch and Reid, who averaged 20 and 15 points, respectively, the Redskins won 20 games. More importantly, they snapped a nine-year state tournament drought.

Jackson doubled down last year, pushing his squad even harder and harping on every detail. That led to another key point in the Redskins rebuild.

The Redskins went on to win 12 of their next 15 , including their first victory in the state tournament in over a decade. The momentum has carried over into this season in a big way. Social Circle has dominated its region, winning by an average of 34 points. In non-league action, the Redskins have 11 wins over teams in higher classifications.

For the Social Circle boys basketball team, the heartbreak of losing to Drew Charter in overtime of the of the Class A public state semifinals Saturday night in Valdosta was compounded by the fact that they might actually have won. Ultimately, the game ended tied at 56 after regulation and the Redskins lost 70-66 after the first overtime period.

Episode 316: Coach Bill Dettering (Owner of Hoopsalytics/Head Girls Basketball Coach Truckee High School) Truckee, CA ("Basketball Specificity in Analytics")

Hoopsalytics was developed and conceived by Coach Bill Dettering. As a coach, Bill has always been obsessed with utilizing video and Moneyball-style stats to make his players and teams better. One day, Bill had an epiphany reading an article on HoopVision about defensive accounting, and then became inspired to build a better system to combine video and analytics in the most useful ways possible.

A year later, the first iteration of Hoopsalytics was put into play for one of Bill's teams, and the players and coaching staff realized the incredible value it provided. This was also the inspiration for the more advanced features in the system.

Coach Bill is currently the Girls Varsity Coach at Truckee High School, and is on his 11th season as a basketball coach at various levels. Bill also played at Swarthmore College, a D3 school. Hoopsalytics is a big part of the Truckee High program.

Bill is a lifelong software designer and entrepreneur, previously founding Zingtree Inc. which has raised $18.5M in total as of May, 2022. Bill has started and run six companies - all powered by data-driven decision making. (Sportsalytics is by far the coolest one.)
