She is an ACC-level coach with the International Coaching Federation and a 21/64 certified philanthropy advisor.
She’s worked in the nonprofit sector for over twenty years and currently serves on the boards of Funders Together to End Homelessness, Funders for LGBTQ Issues, and Bethel Houston UCC. Most recently, she was Vice President of Programs and Community Engagement at The Simmons Foundation (Houston, TX). Prior to joining the Foundation, she led a nationally recognized school-based health outreach initiative in Texas and consulted with BIPOC-led small nonprofits across the country.

The Baltimore Legacy Builders Collective (The Collective) is a group of Black-led organizations collaborating to provide 100 plus hours of training, transferable skills & empowerment to 1,300 youth and young adults in the greater Baltimore area.
In late 2019, The Collective secured funding from the T. Rowe Price Foundation to hire a Chief Development Officer (CDO) which is a shared fundraising resource across the three organizations and for The Collective in order to help build capacity and ensure sustainability. Through this partnership, The Collective will empower other community-based organizations to build capacity and replicate this “shared CDO” model with both technical support to cohorts and direct funding to a select group.

Nicole Taylor is President & CEO of Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF). She brings together a rich background in Bay Area philanthropy, nonprofit administration and fundraising with extensive experience in both the private and public sectors.
Since taking the helm at SVCF, Nicole has led the organization to renew its focus on the many challenges facing residents of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. She has championed efforts to increase local giving from SVCF donors and offer donors new avenues for working with the community foundation so they can be effective philanthropists.
When Nicole joined SVCF in December 2018, she returned to the Bay Area from Arizona, where she had served as vice president of the ASU Foundation. She also previously served as deputy vice president and dean of students at Arizona State University. Prior to her time at ASU, Nicole was the associate vice provost of student affairs and dean of community engagement and diversity at Stanford University, after serving as president and CEO of Thrive Foundation for Youth in Silicon Valley.
Nicole also spent more than 15 years with the East Bay Community Foundation, eventually serving as its president and CEO for six years. Nicole received both her M.A. in Education and A.B. in Human Biology from Stanford University, and she began her career as an educator in Oakland public schools. She served on the board of the Federal Reserve of San Francisco for six years and is currently a board member for Common Sense

Mark Gaines is the Chief Development Officer of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Purdue University. Since joining Purdue, Mark has served as a Director of Development for the Krannert School of Management. He has been instrumental in closing important investments for the School of Management, which includes The Business Opportunity Program that assists underrepresented minorities with their pursuit of a business school education. Mark has connected well with Krannert alumni, faculty, and students, and has assisted his team in raising a record number of dollars for FY2019.
Prior to his tenure at Krannert, Mark served as a Major Gift Officer and Associate Director for the Center for Integrated Learning at Earlham College and Associate Director of Development at Miami University’s Farmer School of Business. During his time with Farmer, Mark solicited endowed scholarships, chairs, and faculty support. He also developed the university’s signature scholarship aimed at first generation and minority students. The latter scholarship became one of Farmers major components for their new college wide campaign.
Mark holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Business, an undergraduate degree from Earlham College, and the distinction of Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE).

**About our guest**
Tyrone McKinley Freeman is an award-winning scholar and teacher who serves as Associate Professor of Philanthropic Studies and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, and an adjunct Associate Professor of Africana Studies at IUPUI.
His research focuses on the history of African American philanthropy, philanthropy in communities of color, the history of American philanthropy, and philanthropy and fundraising in higher education. His latest book is entitled, Madam C.J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving: Black Women’s Philanthropy during Jim Crow (University of Illinois Press, 2020). It examines African American women’s history of charitable giving, activism, education, and social service provision through the life and example of Madam C.J. Walker, the early twentieth century Black philanthropist and entrepreneur. The book received the 2021 Association of Fundraising Professionals Global Skystone Partners Research Prize in Fundraising and Philanthropy, and the 2021 Terry McAdam Book Award from the Alliance for Nonprofit Management.

He is an industry leader in affordable housing finance, real estate and community development, cross-sector collaborations, and organizational management. He has spent the past 20 years successfully leading multi-million dollar revitalization initiatives totaling over $1.5 billion.

David Daniels is the President & CEO of the Bainum Family Foundation. He's has been part of the Foundation team since 2012, serving in a variety of leadership roles. Most recently, as Chief Operating Officer, he oversaw the implementation and operational activities for all programs and initiatives — translating the Foundation’s mission, vision and goals into sustainable processes, systems and procedures to deliver quality program services. He also served as internal leader of the organization — promoting a high-performing culture that fostered the Foundation’s core values of continuous learning, integrity, collaboration and commitment.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Daniels served as Principal of Takoma Academy in Takoma Park, Maryland; Mount Vernon Academy in Mount Vernon, Ohio; and Liberty Christian Academy in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to his role at the Foundation, Daniels serves on the boards of Maryland Philanthropy Network and Pine Forge Academy. He holds a Master of Business Administration, Finance, from Franklin University and a bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Columbia Union College. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Business Administration from Wilmington University.

Fred Blackwell is the CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in the country. The San Francisco Foundation works hand-in-hand with donors, community leaders, and both public and private partners to create thriving communities throughout the Bay Area. Since joining the foundation in 2014, Blackwell has led it in a renewed commitment to social justice through an equity agenda focused on racial and economic inclusion.
Blackwell, an Oakland native, is a nationally recognized community leader with a longstanding career in the Bay Area. Prior to joining the foundation, he served as interim city administrator for the city of Oakland, where he previously served as the assistant city administrator. He was the executive director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Development in San Francisco; he served as the director of the Making Connections Initiative for the Annie E. Casey Foundation in the Lower San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland; he was a Multicultural Fellow in Neighborhood and Community Development at The San Francisco Foundation; and he subsequently managed a multiyear comprehensive community initiative for the San Francisco Foundation in West Oakland.

Exploring Racial Justice in Philanthropy with Dr. Helene Gayle, President & CEO, The Chicago Community Trust
In this episode Dr. Gayle sits down with Kia Croom to discuss the racialized disparities in public health, The Chicago Community Trust's commitment to racial equity, and ways the Trust is supporting and uplifting BIPOC-led nonprofits in the Chicago Region.
Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH, has been president and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations, since October 2017. Under her leadership, the Trust has adopted a new strategic focus on closing the racial and ethnic wealth gap in the Chicago region.
For almost a decade, Dr. Gayle was president and CEO of CARE, a leading international humanitarian organization. An expert on global development, humanitarian, and health issues, she spent 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control, working primarily on HIV/AIDS. She worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, directing programs on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues.
Dr. Gayle serves on public company and nonprofit boards, including The Coca-Cola Company, Organon, Palo Alto Networks, Brookings Institution, Center for Strategic and International Studies, New America, ONE Campaign, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and Economic Club of Chicago. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Council on Foreign Relations, American Public Health Association, National Academy of Medicine, National Medical Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics.
She was awarded the Chicago Mayor’s Medal of Honor for her work on COVID relief and recovery for the city. Named one of Forbes’ “100 Most Powerful Women” and one of NonProfit Times’ “Power and Influence Top 50,” she has authored numerous articles on global and domestic public health issues, poverty alleviation, gender equality, and social justice.

Black Fundraisers! Know Your Worth with Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole
Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole stopped by the Black Fundraisers' Podcast to celebrate and challenge Black Fundraisers' to harness their passion and know their worth--especially in this moment of racial reckoning.
During her childhood, Johnnetta Betsch Cole had the privilege and joy of being mentored by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. As a lifetime member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), she also had the honor of working with Dr. Dorothy Irene Height. Her passion for the work of NCNW is centered in her longstanding engagement in the struggle for social justice, a struggle that must include full equality for African American women. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and she currently serves as a co-chair of the Sorority’s National Arts and Letters Commission. She is also a member of the Links, Inc.
Dr. Cole is a Principal Consultant with Cook Ross, Inc., a consulting firm in Silver Spring, Maryland. She is a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is currently a Senior Consulting Fellow at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dr. Cole served as the president of both historically Black colleges for women in the United States--Spelman and Bennett Colleges-- a distinction she alone holds. She also served as Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. She has authored and edited several books and numerous articles for scholarly and general audiences. She has received numerous awards, including a NCNW Uncommon Height Award and 68 honorary degrees.

Out with the Rhetoric! Moving from Performative DEI to More Inclusive & Equitable Nonprofit Workplaces
Research from the Building Movement Project’s study entitled “Race to Lead” explores BIPOC nonprofit employees’ perspectives and experiences with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in their respective workplaces and how those compare to that of their white counterparts.
This week's guest is Sean Thomas-Breitfeld, Co-Director of the Building Movement Project (BMP). Prior to joining the BMP staff, Sean spent a decade working in various roles at Community Change, where he developed training programs for grassroots leaders, worked in the communications and policy departments where he coordinated online and grassroots advocacy efforts, and lobbied on a range of issues, including immigration reform, transportation equity, and anti-poverty programs. Before joining Community Change, Sean worked as a policy analyst at UnidosUS, where he focused on employment and income security issues.
Sean holds a Master’s in Public Administration from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service and a bachelor’s degree in social work and multicultural studies from St. Olaf College in Minnesota.
