S4 E3: Kasper + Luke (age 10)
Meet 10-year-old friends, Kasper and Luke. Their favorites include The Legend of Zelda video game, and Death of the Wild, music by Metallica, the Netflix series Grizzy and the Lemmings, and creating their own games using Scratch. They talk about family media time, how they feel about explicit lyrics, and learning filmmaking in school. This is our last episode featuring kids from Australia…at least until I return!
Hope you enjoy this episode.
S4 E2: Margot + Ivy (age 7)
Continuing our series of episodes with children in Australia, this episode features 7-year-old friends Margot and Ivy. We talked about the songs and movies that make them laugh-- have you heard the “Never-ending poop song”?—and a few that scare them—like E.T. and Wednesday. They have little interest in TikTok and really aren’t sure what people use it for. Although that doesn’t stop them from knowing a few TikTok dances. But the item they can’t wait to have? a mobile phone! That, and access to the Taylor Swift concert movie. They know the words to lots of her songs—of course! We talked about Bluey, Minecraft, and loads more. Give it a listen. Hear real kids in their own words talking about the media in their lives. I hope you enjoy this episode.

They share common favorites like Disney, Netflix and Mario Kart, and also the animated series She-Ra Princess of Power and the book series, Fairy Animals of Misty Wood. But we also talk about making videos, getting permission to go online, getting addicted to TikTok, what makes a movie scary, and the meaning of the word media.
I hope you enjoy this episode.
S3 E6: Sherri shares thoughts about a recent episode
This episode is a bit different. I am sharing thoughts about a recent experience in which I removed a podcast at a parent's request. What might you have done in this situation?
S3 E5: Theodoro + Lorenzo (age 10)
In this episode you’ll meet 10-year old best pals, Theodoro and Lorenzo. We recorded the podcast in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the boys hometown. It’s the first Kids Talk Media episode recorded outside the US and with a translator, Theodoro’s Dad, Alex. It was interesting to hear the boys talk about favorites that are so similar to boys I’ve talked to in the US. They love Fortnite, GT8, and Scooby Doo, play with Legos and collect football (soccer) trading cards. And watch YouTube videos from their favorite video game players, like Mr. Beast. You don’t need to understand Portuguese to understand their feelings about the animated character Peppa Pig! I hope you enjoy this episode.
S3 E4: Melanie + Kelyn (age 9)
In this episode of Kids Talk Media you’ll meet Melanie and Kelyn, best friends and 4th graders. Their media favorites include Minecraft, a special Frozen-themed wedding app, a hair salon app, ASMR, the Disney television show Shake It Up, and books. Specifically, Harry Potter books! One is curious about social media, but the other, not so much. And they have an interesting perspective on the difference between social media and 'search'. They are at the age when they feel the pull of digital media all the time, and are just developing the media literacy skills to navigate it all. Their drama and laughter is contagious! I hope you enjoy this episode.
S3 E3: Serena + Gabby (age 12)
In this episode you’ll meet Serena and Gabby, two musical-theater loving 12-year-olds. Their media favorites include musical theater soundtracks and YouTube. Serena is on social media, mainly TikTok and Snapchat, but Gabby has decided not to get on social media yet. They have strong opinions about Amazon and Jeffrey Bezos! And they credit their digital literacy teacher with helping them navigate online spaces. I hope you enjoy this episode.
S3 E2: Lincoln + Harper (ages 6 & 7)
Get ready for the next episode of the Kids Talk Media podcast featuring brother and sister, Lincoln and Harper, ages 6 and 7. With iPads in their hands, they showed me their favorite games, including SlitherIO, Roblox Fashion Famous, Neon Splash, Angry Birds Transformers and Fruit Ninja-- a favorite because “I can’t cut fruits in real life!” I discovered who gets to approve new friends on Kids Messenger; why the Haschak Sisters on YouTube are a favorite; and what Spongebob and cotton candy have in common! Check it out! I hope you enjoy it.
S3 E1: Nate + Ranier (age 14)
In this episode you’ll meet Nate and Ranier, two middle schoolers navigating through the changes brought on by the pandemic, online learning, and screen time that encompasses classes, video games, homework research, meeting friends, and keeping in touch with what’s happening in the world. Favorite social media space? Discord. TikTok is on the outs. Video games like Mindcraft, Spelunky 2 and Civilization 6 are in. I hope you enjoy this episode.
S2 E8: Rachel + Lyla (age 12)
Meet Rachel and Lyla, two middle school age girls on the brink of new experiences, new responsibilities and new struggles with media. You’ll hear all about their first Instagram accounts, “snap streaks” in Snapchat, and how TikTok fits into their lives. Other topics? YouTube and Disney Plus, (Rachel says Disney Plus is “the best thing that’s ever happened to me!”) I hope you enjoy this episode.
S2 E7: Aaron + Aitan (age 9)
Meet Aaron and Aitan. Two sports-loving nine-year old, 4th grade boys. YouTube is the top spot for them. They watch YouTubers playing sports-related video games (such as Muselk) and learn strategies on YouTube for when they are playing sports-related video games themselves! Sports and video games are the main attraction. For a laugh, they like the family YouTubers of Funnelvision and the challenge-champs Dude Perfect. But they’re already aware of the power of breaking news and watch CNN as a news source. Other topics? Instagram, Fortnite, Snapchat, and their disinterest in TikTok.
S2 E6: Rachel + Ada (ages 13 + 12)
Meet Rachel and Ada and discover how media influences their lives. Rachel loves reading books and is mindful about cyber-bullying and balancing TV time with homework. Ada manages a fan account for the band Why Don’t We and feels a responsibility to check sources for any content she shares. Both girls are conscious of the need to be informed about the world and breaking news --and are trying to find the best ways to fact-check the news that shows up in their social media feed before sharing it with friends. Hope you enjoy this episode of Kid Talk Media!
S2E5: Scout + Sami (age 11)
This episode features eleven year old best pals, Scout and Sami. We chat about all the media in their lives from streaming documentaries for school assignments, to Facetiming friends to collaborate on projects, making videos for family presents and creating yet another TikTok! They use media to relax, to learn, to have fun, to get creative, to connect with friends. It’s a constant presence in their lives. But are they really prepared to assess the vast volume of information online?
S2E4: Penelope + Mackenzie (age 6)
This episode of Kids Talk Media features Penelope and Mackenzie. These two six year old girls are full of energy and full of opinions about TikTok, Alexa (‘she’ makes them go coo coo crazy!), Ryan’s Toy Review, Kids Bop Kidz music, and of course , their favorite YouTuber Lauri, the Icing Artist! These girls will definitely make you smile. I hope you’ll give it a listen.
