Texas Wine Month 2020 | @texaswinepod Shelly Wilfong & Ron Martin | ep 25 Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Texas Wine Month 2020 | @texaswinepod Shelly Wilfong & Ron Martin | ep 25 Kiepersol Texas Podcast

October is Texas state Wine Month!

Shelly Wilfong - @texaswinepod joins us to talk about Texas wine, her podcast, and using quarantine to help educate people to understand the issues facing the Texas wine industry!  You can also find some of the stories that Shelly has written on the Texas Wine Lover website txwinelover.com ! You can listen to her podcast "This Texas Wine" on all of the major podcast platforms.

Shelly's recommendations:

1) Texas has a lot of unique varietals of grapes growing, so visit a Texas Winery and let them guide you to find something you like in their tasting room.

2) Texas Rosé is a great goto wine with a wide range of styles, from dry to sweet options.

Shelly is dying to try the Kiepersol Fizzy Vit - canned wine in the Dallas area. We are working on getting our cans in the stores around the DFW area. The closest location to Dallas that has our product is Brookshire's Grocery Company in Forney, Tx. ** CORRECTION: There is no longer a Brookshire's in Rockwall.   If you're willing to help get our wines, especially Fizzy Vit in your local shop, you can request they carry Kiepersol Wines through our distributor Southern Glaziers.

With the shutdowns we didn't have an opportunity to release more podcasts earlier this year, so we take time to revisit with Ron Martin and look at footage from an East Texas winery tour we took in late 2019 and early 2020.

Ron also gives some tips on how to celebrate Texas Wine Month:

1) Go buy good Texas Wine. In retail or directly from the winery

2) Ask your favorite Texas restaurants if they have Texas Wines. If they don't encourage them to carry them!

 3) Use a website or app to find some amazing Texas Vineyards & Wineries and go visit them! txwinelover.com is Ron's goto.  4) If you see if the bottle you're drinking is really a Texas wine

  - If it says "For Sale in Texas" it's not made in Texas

 - If it says "American Appellation" it's probably not a Texas wine

 - If it says "Texas High Plains", "Texas Estate" or "Texas Wine" it is a Texas Wine

Ron and Michael visited 3 East Texas Wineries:

- Pella Legna - Tyler, Tx - Briar Creek Vineyards

- Whitehouse, Tx - 3 P's in a Vine - Athens, Tx

Alex Lee | Sense of Place, Terroir & Kiepersol Estate Grown Grapes | ep 24

Alex Lee | Sense of Place, Terroir & Kiepersol Estate Grown Grapes | ep 24

Michael asks Alex about a saying that he keeps hearing in the wine community: "Opening up a drinking a bottle of wine is like experiencing a sense of place captured in a bottle, from a specific time and part of the world."

Alex explains that there is a word for this experience and it's called "Terroir" (terˈwär). Often referred to as "the land" or in this case Sense of Place. Kiepersol is very terroir driven and grapes are grown 100% on the estate at Kiepersol. This means all the wines we make are grown exclusively on our land. Drinking Kiepersol Wines give a true sense of East Texas captured in a bottle. Alex works with the grapes as they grow and allows them to express themselves, highlighting their own naturally flavorful, elegant and fruit-forward characteristics. This scientific approach allows for Kiepersol to create wines that many people can enjoy, with low bitterness and a smooth balanced experience from the moment it touches your mouth, to the finish.

Drinking a bottle of Kiepersol wine is an invitation. We welcome you to join us and drink the wine right here! However, enjoying a Kiepersol wines halfway across the country is like bringing a little bit of Kiepersol with you!

Alex talks about the Kiepersol Artize and Azuca Artize wines. Artize is an Afrikaans (language) Word that means "Artistry". Azuca Artize Means "Sweet Artistry".

Many wine drinkers from all over the world love to drink a Pinot Noir wine. Since Kiepersol is located in East Texas, we aren't able to grow Pinot Noir. So we made Kiepersol Artize, a red blend, to mimic the same characteristics of a Pinot Noir wine. This is a lighter wine, with low acidity and no bitterness that highlights the fruit-forward characteristics of our grapes. The Kiepersol Azuca Artize is made with very similar ideas in mind as the Artize, but more of a semi-sweet approach. You can pick up the 2012 Vintages of the Kiepersol Artize and Azuca Artize in the Winery Tasting Room at Kiepersol or in retail stores throughout Texas.

Alex Lee - Kiepersol Winemaker talks Bourbon Barrel-aged Merlot | ep 23

Alex Lee - Kiepersol Winemaker talks Bourbon Barrel-aged Merlot | ep 23

Alex Lee is now officially the Kiepersol Winemaker!

On this episode, we talk about Kiepersol Bourbon Barrel-aged Merlot, the 2016 vintage of the Bourbon Barrel Merlot and how unique it is to have a Winery, Distillery and Vineyard all on the same property.

"If anyone orders a Merlot, I AM NOT **** DRINKING MERLOT." - Sideways (movie from 2004)

Sideways the movie gave Merlot sales such a bad wrap for many years, but Merlot is a really a high-quality grape and wine throughout the world. At Kiepersol, we especially love our Merlot and what the East Texas Terrior expresses in our wine! Kiepersol Merlot is not as bold as Cab Sauv, but has very fruit-forward characteristics. This makes for a bottle of very delicious wine and it pairs so well with a nice dinner meal.

Kiepersol Wines are made to be very comfortable wines and highlight fruit-forward characteristics. Since we've had such success with our Merlot, we've embraced it by taking our Kiepersol Bourbon Barrels, which aged Jimmy's Bourbon and started aging our Kiepersol Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in those barrels! This allows for the marriage between the Kiepersol Merlot and the bourbon soaked barrels which add flavor to the wine in a wonderful way.

With the Holidays coming up, this wine pairs really well with those smokey meats and hearty meals.

Alex Lee - Assistant Wine Maker talks about the 2018 White Zinfandel and Vit | ep 22

Alex Lee - Assistant Wine Maker talks about the 2018 White Zinfandel and Vit | ep 22

Alex Lee - Assistant Wine Maker talks about the 2018 White Zinfandel and Vit ep 22 | Kiperersol Texas Podcast

Today we are joined by Alex Lee, the Assistant Wine Maker at Kiepersol. Alex has worked within the company for over 6 years now, starting off in the Restaurant at Kiepersol, then the Tasting Room Manager for the Winery and has been in the winery production facility for the last couple of years.

White Zinfandel is considered a "blush wine", which comes from the Red Zinfandel grapes, but is made like it's a rosé. "Blush" will almost always refer to a sweeter wine, while "Rosé" can actually be sweet or dry. This 2018 Kiepersol White Zinfandel has some strawberry-kiwi notes to it and is very juicy! This will be perfect for summer and nice lighter meals will be enhanced by pairing this wine with it.

2018 Kiepersol Vit (meaning "white" in Afrikaans) is a proprietary blend, which stylistically achieves the same goal in flavor, based on what the grapes taste like in that vintage. So it's not really possible to give the exact grape blend, as it changes from vintage to vintage, to achieve a Riesling style, semi-sweet wine. This 2018 Kiepersol Vit is very fresh, crisp, semi-sweet and pairs well with spicy food or even fatty meat cuts or can be enjoyed all by itself!

Alex recently spent some time in Napa Valley, California doing some research and was able to compare Texas Wine to Napa Valley. Alex's takeaway from his visit is that Texas Wine, specifically Kiepersol Wine, has a lot more "comfort" compared to Napa Valley Wines, while still highlighting the Texas terroir. Napa wines typically are very bold and beefy, but very different.

Texas is one of the fasted grape growing and winemaking regions in the nation. Kiepersol has been in business since 1999, making this our 20th year and we were the 34th bonded winery (since prohibition). There are now over 350 active wineries in Texas! Texas wine not only offers that comfort, but we have wine unlike any other region in the world. Alex recommends anyone interested in wine tasting really needs to experience Texas Wines.

Alex is a big fan of Port Wine and has been trying different Texas Port wines, other than Kiepersol's. He really likes Haak Vineyards & Winery Port. Alex likes Messina Hof Winery, William Chris Vineyards and a lot of other great wineries set up in Fredricksburg, Texas. One of our East Texas neighbors Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards - Pittsburg, TX just opened up a location down Fredricksburg area, which is exciting for the Texas Wine world! Alex talks about how Kiepersol embraces "competition" in our backyard, because it's more about the community growing together, rather than tearing each other down. We want people to have a great experience when they try Texas wine. By having more wineries show up, we will encourage each other to make a bottle of better wine, every vintage, every style, every time!

We look forward to having Alex back on the podcast to go more in-depth with some other wines and geek out over wine!

Lauren Alexander | ep 21 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Lauren Alexander joined us in the Square of Downtown Tyler, Texas! Lauren grew up in Bullard, Tx and grew up playing music since she was a child! Lauren's parents were supportive of her as they had lots of instruments and equipment around all the time. Lauren started off playing country music and has evolved over the years! She now is an Americana singer and songwriter.

Lauren recommends visiting Tyler, Tx if you're wanting to visit a city that hasn't lost it's identity in the small town feel! Lauren reflects on how Tyler has grown and changed since she was a child! There are a lot more places to go experience live music and there is a growing culture of very talented musicians! Meredith was on Episode 10 of the podcast if you wanted to learn more about her!

Lauren record an album about 5 years ago, but she has been in a place of singing, song writing and playing shows since! She is planning on releasing a new album towards the end of 2019. Lauren is a young mother, who is finding new inspiration for her music and work-life balance. She use to find inspiration for her music through traveling around and touring. She absolutely enjoys being a mother, which has created a whole new perspective on life! Lauren's creative process in making her music, starts off by using voice memos on her phone to talk out or establish lyrics first. Then she teams up with her husband, Richie, helps write the music to match the lyrics. Lauren has enjoyed playing music with Richie, which has freed up her creative space to be able to incorporate unique instruments into her music, such as the harmonica! If you haven't heard Lauren I'd highly suggest listening to her as she uses the harmonica so beautifully!

Lauren enjoys some of our Tyler Local Eats such as Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q and Cork. Food & Drink! She has played at both locations, but their food is great and well worth checking out if you're ever visiting us!

Michael actually met Lauren at Cork while she was hosting an Open Mic Night! Some people are a little apprehensive about going to a restaurant or bar that has an Open Mic Night. Lauren weighs in on the benefits and fun of attending and playing at Open Mic Nights. It's okay that people come up to play a song and it isn't very good. Success is built on failures. So if you're wanting to try out new songs, music, poetry, spoken word, etc, then find a local mic night and do you best! If you're wanting to hear some great local up and coming artists, attend these businesses that are hosting these events! Support local business and artists!

Card 53 Comedy | Brad Johnson | ep 19 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Today we are joined by Brad Johnson who does improv comedy in Tyler, Texas! Card 53 Comedy has been around for 10 years now, playing shows in East Texas. You can find them playing at Liberty Hall and they are sponsored by True Vine Brewing Company!

These 90-minute shows are well worth attending on multiple occasions, because no two shows are exactly the same. Everything is off the cuff, each show, including multiple shows that happen on the same day! This a great date night event, where you can get dinner in a Tyler Local Eats restaurant, then head over to the show! They've even collaborated with Jack Ryan's Steak & Chophouse Tyler where you can get a full meal for two and two tickets to the show! It's fun seeing local businesses collaborating and making Visit Tyler Texas a destination spot!

Jamey Whitley, Aaron Keith Smith, Brad Johnson, RJ Norman, Erfan Vafaie are the improv comedians and they are supported by rotating keyboard players Austin Day or Charles Praytor. Card 53 Comedy is a suggestion based show, where audience members fill out cards before the show with different categories or unlikely scenarios that each of the comedian's act or play out. i.g. "Write down a name of a movie that has never been made."

Brad was born and raised in Tyler, Texas. Went to school in Florida, but decided to move back home because he loves this community! In 2010, Brad joined the team of comedians during their second year in doing their event. Brad's first show, he wasn't even planning on being on stage, just attending the event to support his friend, Jamey Whitley. Jamey called Brad on stage and said, "No man, you're playing with us!" Then the rest is history, Brad was a part of the team. Brad wants to perform every day doing Improv Comedy, he is passionate about it.

Brad loves eating at some of the locally owned restaurants in town:

Pazzeria by Pietro's of Tyler

Emily Nance gives bartending tips for making cocktails at home ep 18

Emily Nance gives bartending tips for making cocktails at home ep 18

Emily Nance gives bartending tips for making cocktails at home ep 18 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

We are in the Distillery at Kiepersol where the Lead Bartendering, Emily, runs things and gives us some insight into making cocktails.

Emily has been in the service industry since 2012, starting off as a server. She would watch these mixologists at the bar make these crazy green and sour drinks that were served in martini glasses and tasted amazing. So she got a job at a Mexican restaurant where she started serving margaritas. She didn't learn much because it was a premixing margarita machine, but she got her foot in the door. After a little while, she managed to get a job at The Grove - Tyler where they taught mixology and bartending edict. Emily started there about 4 years ago, where she worked the speed bar and worked her way into the cocktail bar at The Grove.

The speed bar is designed for call drinks that servers can pick up or customer can walk up to and grab quickly mixed drinks. Such as Jack and Coke or a Screwdriver. Whereas the cocktail bar is designed to make specially crafted drinks that aesthetically are appealing and taste great with a complex experience. People who go to a cocktail bar expect that drinks take a little longer to make because it is about the experience. Most mixologists will take a few extra steps to give a presentation during the construction of the cocktail.

Emily gives some tips on constructing your own cocktail at home:

1) There are 4 basic elements or tastes you will experience when consuming a drink: Sweet, Salty, Sour & Savory (Bitter).

     - When constructing a cocktail you want to balance the drink with at least 3 of these tasting experiences.

          - The goal isn't to cancel certain flavors out, but rather to enhance each characteristic through the addition of another ingredient.  Example - Sweet & Sour elements are commonly mixed together, but they can easily overpower one another. Adding salt to the rim helps enhance each of the 3 elements.

    - Example Cocktails: The Salty Dog - Vodka, Grapefruit juice & Salt Rim.

        - Grapefruit is very citrusy and sour, the Vodka is often used straight, but can be blended with a sweet liqueur or flavor. Then you can use a simple syrup on the rim of the glass, then dip it into salt. So you have the sour, sweet and salty, which helps no one element overpowers the other.

2) When constructing a cocktail it is important to know which base spirit you're going to use and it's own natural characteristics. Not all cocktail recipes would be good if you change the base spirit.

- Bourbon or whiskey often have very distinct flavors that you don't always want to overpower or hide with a lot of ingredients, rather you want to enhance each flavor.

- Rum is often made from sugar, which makes a lot of rums tend to be sweeter. Playing to its natural sweetness can help create a well balanced and delicious cocktail.

- Vodka is pure alcohol that is diluted with water. It shouldn't have an odor or taste before it is cut with water. This is why most people prefer using vodka for mixed drinks. It allows you to have the most room to be creative and rely on other ingredients to add flavor and taste.

- We mentioned the Salty Dog earlier, if we were to replace vodka with rum, we would have a completely different drink and most people would think it tastes weird. The sweetness might overload the experience.

- Understanding the base spirit on its own, allows you to create experiences or experiment

Marnelle talks about Flight, Shiner Bock & Fizzy Vit ep 17 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Marnelle talks about Flight, Shiner Bock & Fizzy Vit ep 17 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

At the end of January 2019, we canned Flight for the second time! This second run is a smaller size than our first. We improved our design and got approval for distribution throughout Texas! This should be hitting store shelves soon and we can't be more excited! They will be sold in 4-packs or you might see them offered as some restaurants as a single can!

With a younger generation coming into the wine world market, we saw a trend and desire for canned wine for convenience. It's not every situation that you can take a bottle, corkscrew, and glasses with you. Now we're fully aware that many traditionalists prefer this method and that is perfectly fine! We will continue to bottle a lot most of our wine. However, this emerging market showed us there is a lot of interest in this product. So we looked at this market and saw that there is a great lack of quality wine in a can. Flight is our solution for people opening the finer moments in life!

We got our inspiration for the design from our local residents, the South African Guinea Fowl! We have a symbiotic relationship with these wonderful creatures, where they provide protection for our fruit and we, in turn, provide food and shelter for them! While they patrol our vineyard, they leave beautiful feathers for us to find, which provides a perfect logo for our can of Flight Sparkling Rosé. Let go of yesterday and take flight!

Kiepersol's motto is Love, Grow, Do! We believe in Loving our families, friends and guests. We grow as much as we possibly can and do our best to succeed! We were "green" before green was ever considered cool. This includes being debt-free as a company. We don't buy what we actually need, we only purchase what we simply can't live without.

This "Can-paign" is one of our first major projects at Kiepersol since the Founder, Pierre de Wet passed away. The other major project is a beautiful venue that overlooks our vineyard. Perfect for wedding, parties, and meetings at Kiepersol! This venue will be available later this year!

We recently collaborated with Spoetzl Brewery, Home of Shiner Beers to create a Shiner Beer Rosé Pale Ale! Spoetzl has been around for over 100 years and it's very iconic of Texas! They took 100 Kiepersol Barrels and aged their beer in them, giving that nice rosé taste. We then took Spoetzl Brewery's yeast and fermented our Vit Wine with it! We will be releasing a canned Kiepersol Fizzy Vit in stores throughout Texas in March! If you don't see the beer or the wine in stores, please ask for it. We want everyone to have the chance to buy both!

Come celebrate the new season at Kiepersol with us! We have our Waking of the Vines event coming up in March of 2019 and we invite you all to come to visit us as we see bud break!

Ron Martin | Texas Wine Lover as a tool ep 16 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Ron Martin | Texas Wine Lover as a tool ep 16 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

Ron Martin is a Texas Wine Specialist and a Texas Wine Lover!

Ron didn't really start drinking wine until around 2010 when his doctor told him he needed to stop drinking beer. So Ron started his wine journey drinking Pinot Noirs, which is the lightest structure wine that he could tolerate at that time. Ron and his wife took a trip from in 2011 from Texas to Napa Valley and went to find the best Napa Pinot Noir. They enjoyed that trip so much they returned in 2012, however this time, Ron was introduced to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah. This began his understanding and appreciation for different styles of wines.

In 2014, Ron and his wife downsized from their dream house to something much more comfortable for two people. Since he and his wife had begun this wine journey, they were introduced to Kiepersol Estates, which is surrounded by the vineyards of Kiepersol. The idea of living next to a winery, vineyard, restaurant and the neighborhood at Kiepersol helped influence their decision to move here! The morning of this podcast, Ron mentions that he saw everyone pruning the vines, which gives a sense of being emerged into the process. Once they were living at Kiepersol, it helped open Ron's eyes to the quality and variety to the Texas Wine Industry!

Ron talks about how he and his wife, find some of the best Texas wines or wineries through a website Texas Wine Lover by Jeff Cope. Where they highlight some of the best Texas-specific wines, wineries, and destinations. This website is where you can see an interactive map of some of the best wineries, any Texas Winer Lover blog posts made about them, that winery's website and hours. This helps Ron to plan for 3-4 wineries a day when he goes to visit, to maximize opportunity and enjoyment. Ron visits the 290 corridor often, where there are Texas wineries between Johnson City, Tx and Fredericksburg, Tx. Which is how Ron has found some of the best wines in Texas.

The other cool community and tool that Texas Wine Lover created that Ron uses to find Texas Wine is the Facebook Group - "Texas Wine Lover Website", which is meant for any Texan who loves wine can join! This group is dedicated sharing any great wine your enjoying or ask questions that don't necessarily have to be Texas-specific. This provides a lot of education as people share pictures of videos of their wine. This is how Ron and his wife have found out about a lot of wines or wineries that they didn't' even know existed. Some of the people in the group are well connected or know exactly who you need to talk to, in order to have the best experience while visiting some wineries. In many cases, because of people in the group giving suggestions to Ron and are connected to the winemakers, Ron has shown up to wineries with the winery staff is anticipating his arrival. These experiences are unlike anything else out there!

Cafe 1948 Sam and Amber Richmann ep 15

Cafe 1948 Sam and Amber Richmann ep 15

Café 1948 is a local mobile European style coffee bar that is perfect for special events. They focus on making specialty coffee with class and style with a completely renovated 1948 Boles Aero travel trailer. Sam and Amber Richmann are the owners who had put a lot of hard work into restoring to the trailer so that everyone can enjoy a great cup of coffee, tea or shave ice during the hotter months! They really believe in having conversations with people and investing in the community. This is done through the design of the cafe, to mimic what you might see in European countries; with limited menu items and small seating areas, you can go to the cafe and have a conversation with the barista or other visitors!

If you've been to any major city in Texas, you've probably seen or even purchased a meal from a food truck, which provides more options for meals. Cafe 1948 is one of a handful of food trucks in East Texas that have paved the way for food trucks in Smith County and

El Guapo Records | Ian Power Music ep 14

El Guapo Records | Ian Power Music ep 14 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

El Guapo Records located in the same building as Alex & Afton Vintedge in Tyler, Texas has some of the best vinyl, 8-track and cassettes in East Texas! Ian Power has been running the shop since November 2018, loves listening to music, however, he is a local East Texas Musician.

Ian talks about the resurgence in the vinyl industry and how this medium of listening to music has become quite popular again, especially in the younger generations. Some Indie bands have released new music straight to cassette or vinyl because there is nothing like the sound you get going to those vintage mediums of music. With digital downloads, CDs are almost unthought of any more. Which has created a nostalgia and appreciate for Vinyl once again. There is something special about getting newly pressed or old vinyl records because they often come with pictographs or booklets that tell more of the story the musicians intended.

Ian Power likes most music, however, he is a big fan of 60's and 70's psych rock, which you can see a lot of in his collection at the shop. Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Dr. John & the Nite Trippers, The Grateful Dead and some other weirder, but awesome bands as you go more into it! El Guapo has a lot of classics as well such as Ozzy Osbourne, Prince, David Bowie and just about every genre of music, including movie soundtracks on vinyl.

El Guapo Records sells turntables, amps, vintage systems that will allow you to listen to these records or even your collection that might need a little dust wiped off! Not to mention local artist's CDs, El Guapo Records swag and other great merch as well! Whether you like vintage clothing or old vinyl, this is a one-stop opportunity!

You can visit El Guapo Records 5304 Old Bullard Rd, Tyler, Texas

You can find El Guapo Records on Facebook or @elguaporecordsco on Instagram.

Ian is in the process of getting an online shop set up, so that you can add to your collection. In the meantime, you can come to visit the shop, if you want to see what he has available.

Ian Power talks about the music scene in East Texas and Tyler. Ian Power Music just released a new album, which he has been playing around at a few different shows. Ian is also apart of a Tyler band, Gorgeous Jetsons. At the end of 2018, all four Tyler bands put on a show that was the first of it's kind in East Texas. Gorgeous Jetsons, Road Keepers,

Caitlin a.k.a. "Denim Whisperer" runs things around here, where she offers some of the best vintage clothing she can get her hands on, plus they hand make some of the other clothes they offer as well! They've been established and located in the same building since 2013.

Caitlin's mother handmakes a lot of different clothes that are stylistically reconstructed; Caftans, kimonos, bell bottoms and fun bohemian pieces.

Alex & Afton's building was built in the 1940s and use to be a house that they've renovated for their business and adds to the overall bohemian feel of vintage clothing.

If you head over to Alex & Afton's social media pages, you can see a lot of the modeling, photography, and collaborations they've been doing! They really step up their game when it comes to highlighting their products and tell the story of each product.

Caitlin likes to take advantage of her strengths and passions to stage and decorate for photography shoots. The end product creates results of more foot traffic and discussion of what vintage clothing they have on hand! Caitlin utilizes Instagram and Facebook stories to highlight products and add value to her customers, as they get new products in or having exclusive opportunities.

Alex & Afton is typically opened Wed - Saturday 12 - 5 pm
@aavintedge on Instagram

They will have some late night shopping events and parties coming up, so stay tuned to their social media pages to learn more!

The First podcast of 2019 ep 12 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

The First podcast of 2019 ep 12 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast

 Happy 2019 everyone!

Marnelle reflects on growing with Kiepersol during the 20 years and making. We started growing and tending to crepe myrtles and how much they've grown. When Pierre established the Restaurant and Winery at Kiepersol, he didn't want to create a manufactured feel.  So we have a lot of natural plants grown in the area, along with strategically planted trees, to give a very beautiful view.

We have a lot of events coming up to celebrate our 20 years in the making, so be on the lookout for those events. One of the first events we will be doing is a collaboration with High Hill Farms in a wine pairing dinner event.

High Hill Farm is a wonderful place where you can go and exhale. Whether you're going to stay for a corporate retreat or dine at their destination, it is nice to be able to go somewhere and unplug. The people at High Hill Farms care about providing for people and giving excellent service to their guests.

Valentine's Day is around the corner! Kiepersol is a nice little date destination that keeps growing in popularity. Our Restaurant at Kiepersol was booked for Valentine's Day back in November of 2018. So we've had to direct reservations to other dates. However, before or after lunch or dinner, you can still enjoy a lot of things at Kiepersol. One of the best things to do while visiting it so sit out on the deck of the Distillery or Wine Tasting Room of Kiepersol just before sunset. In fact, it is quite romantic to sit out and enjoy our view of the East Texas skies, while drinking wine or a cocktail.  Sharon Tasting Room Manager has put together some limited seating date night opportunities for Valentine's Day. Called an "Amuse Bouche" & "Wine Know" Class, where you will get a few bites of cheese and meats, while you're getting the chance to taste 5 different wines guided by Sharon. If there is enough interest, we will host more events through Valentine's Day weekend.

Amuse Bouche & Wine Know Valentine's Day Class

6:30 PM Valentines Day by Reservation/Pre-pay ONLY

There is NO night like TONIGHT to say "I love you" to your Valentine. Don't wait until Valentine's Day. :)

Brookshire's has had some events at various locations recently where we've had the chance to collaborate with them by doing wine tasting.

We are constantly trying to give people more reason to come to Tyler, Tx by highlighting and collaborating with local business to give people a better understanding of all of the amazing little places in the area. We're not as big as Dallas, but we've got plenty to do in Tyler and we want to highlight those gems in future podcasts. We're also going to start talking more about other Texas Wineries and Texas Wines, as well as more about Kiepersol.

Our delicately sparkling canned Rosé called Flight has been a hit since the summer of 2018 release! We are grateful for everyone who has purchased Flight from our Wine Tasting Room at Kiepersol. Many people have been asking when we're going to make Flight available at all of the grocery stores and wine shops throughout Texas. At the time of this of this podcast, we're about to can our second round of Flight, which we hope to then distribute as quickly as feasible! This can of Flight will be a 175mL and perfect for BBQs, on a boat, out at the pool or while eating dinner. We look forward to hearing fro

Christmas time at Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 11

Christmas time at Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 11

Christmas time at Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 11
.
We've been very busy with Christmas around the corner. I am sure many of you have as well! Whether you're shopping, driving around to different friend's or family member's houses, we wanted to help you remember to stop and breath a moment. Enjoy the opportunities to be with friends and family, enjoy making memories. The busy-ness can wait and doesn't require your full attention during Christmas celebration.
.
Life pushes some people around, others have had some tragic or difficult year, some people have to work the hardest during this season. We don't know what someone has been through, so as we take a moment to slow down and live in the moment. Appreciate what we do have and reach out to someone within our sphere of influence to show some love, appreciate the moment and choose gratitude. Don't let toxic negativity or subjective hate or focus on what you don't have, win, during the season of gratitude. Perspective and empathy matters. Perspective creates a lens by which you can look at life through, while empathy allows the lens to have a focal point.
.
We celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior during Christmas! Marnelle's and Velmay's families like to celebrate family and friends with love, mistletoe, gingerbread houses and many Christmas traditions. They like to disconnect from the world and just focus on family and making memories.
.
Kiepersol is our platform to celebrate God and use our God-given talents to glorify Him! We can only be true to ourselves and bring value to His Kingdom through that which He has provided to us. We do offer wine and spirits, but it's the Holy Spirit that provides for all of our needs.
.
Thank you to everyone who is bringing their joy to us! Through bringing family, friends or having their Christmas parties at our restaurant or event center. We are so blessed and honored to have so many great people refer us or keep coming back to us! Marnelle and Velmay are both grateful for all of the employees who join us and become family here at Kiepersol. Thank you for all you do!
.
What are your favorite Christmas Traditions?
.
From all of us at Kiepersol, have a Merry Christmas!

Meredith Crawford, local East Texan plays for us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 10

Meredith Crawford, local East Texan plays for us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 10

Meredith is from Chandler, TX. East Texas born and raised, she just graduated from UT Tyler with a Bachelors in Accounting.
.
Meredith started playing music at the age of 10, originally playing in a choir and opera. By the time she was 13, she started playing old country music. After Meredith played her first show, she earned enough tips to go out and purchase her own guitar from a pawn shop, which was a Johnston guitar. Meredith's mother purchased her a "Fake Book" of a bunch of old country songs. She learned chords and eventually started writing her own songs.
.
The music scene in East Texas has been present for a while but it is growing, even though at times it may seem like it isn't.
Meredith has played many different wineries, breweries, and restaurants in East Texas, mostly in Ben Wheeler, Tyler and Longview.

Meredith prefers to incorporate all styles of music and likes to play all styles as she grows in her skills. Being able to jump around in genres allows her to connect with the audience a lot more because it appeals to so many different demographics. Country, old folk music, 60s/70s/80s rock, jazz, blues, they all inspire each other and create nostalgia for the audience.
.
Meredith was in school and would have to do typing tests, which she capitalized on that opportunity to learn new songs by writing the lyrics in these tests. This along with mastering cover songs helps create repetition, which sometimes gets "old". Learning a new song or changing up how you learn is important. This idea of consistency through change allows you to prepare for fighting past your own thoughts and helps you to focus. Sometimes while you're playing in a show your mind will wander and you with have some really weird or dumb thoughts, which can derail your performance if you're not prepared. Being nervous is okay, you just have to fight the urge to fly away or given into a momentary fear. Fighting your thoughts through self-awareness helps you to gain confidence, which is really important to being a musician/performer. These skills sometimes require experience in order to learn how to overcome the hurdles. Stay true to your goals and passions, which will create new opportunities to get your first show or your next show!
.
In Meredith's experience, booking shows really came through relationship and word of mouth. Sometimes venues would approach her and sometimes she would contact venues directly to play, however, the most effective way she was able to get booked was through relationships she built with other people. As she made friends with everyone and heard her play, she would end up getting referred to play different venues and shows.
.
Meredith gives some perspective on local music and how we should encourage artists through our business. Sometimes going to a restaurant or a venue for a show or there happens to be a show, you walk in with a preconceived notion on what you should get out of the restaurant, venue, band or music. The best thing you can do is to have an open mind when you're going into an establishment with a local artist. Engaging musicians before or after shows is always nice, as well as showing appreciation for what you're hearing or experiencing is greatly appreciated. Sometimes just showing up to a local show and giving it a chance, can be a great surprise! If you don't like it, you can always leave and do something else here in East Texas.
Meredith highlights some of her favorite East Texas food joints:
San Pedro's Restaurant - Chandler, TX
The Forge Bar and Grill - Ben Wheeler, TX
Moore's Store - Ben Wheeler, TX
Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q - Tyler, TX
WaWa's Seafood Shack - Athens, TX
.
Meredith loves sweet wines, specifically Moscato
.
Song: Transit - on the coming Meredith Crawford Album in January 2019

Local musician and entertainer Douglas Jay Boyd joins us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 9

Local musician and entertainer Douglas Jay Boyd joins us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 9

Local musician and entertainer Douglas Jay Boyd joins us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 9 . Hosted by Michael Roth . Douglas is a local East Texan who is well connected in the community and invests in artist collaborations. . Michael and Douglas met in early 2018 because of Café 1948 owners Sam and Amber Richmann were hosting a true Texas BBQ. Café 1948 is a local mobile coffee shop that is heavily invested and supportive of the local community. . Douglas is a native Texan, who moved down to Austin in 2005 thinking he could get his musical chops in that area. Once he got down there he was intimidated at first by the level of talent most of the musicians had in that area. It took a friend moving down there and pushing Douglas to become better at his craft before Douglas started to play shows regularly. Douglas ended up touring and playing professionally all around North America, around 300+ shows a year. . Eventually, Douglas moved to Tyler, Tx in 2015 because he wanted to be a father to his son. Between his fatherly duties and his lack of confidence in his ability to be a full-time musician, Douglas took a break from music. After spending some time outside of the music scene, he quickly realized that he needed music in his life on a regular basis. So he started sound engineering for some local venues and booking bands or playing smaller gigs as well. During this time, Douglas realized that there is so much potential in the East Texas music scene. Tyler, Tx is perfectly located, far enough away from most major Texas markets and far enough from Shreveport or New Orleans, that we are the perfect stop for touring bands as they make their way east or west. There is a lot of the musical talent here locally in East Texas as well. . There is a lot of opportunities around Tyler specifically, where you can experience cover bands or country music. Places like Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q provides opportunities to experience different genres and cultures within the music scenes. They are also working on expanding their restaurant and venue area seating, which will only bring in more opportunities for more bands to come out. . Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q caters to Americana, blues and rock'n'roll style music. . Texas Music City Grill & Smokehouse - Authentic Site has a really nice venue and has become very successful and will only continue to grow. They cater a lot to the red dirt country scene. . True Vine Brewing Company has a really awesome and different venue that caters to a lot of East Texas music and other concerts within the rock genre. . The Grove - Tyler has a really neat venue, that caters to a lot of the local musicians, but has great acts from out of town as well. . Rick's On The Square is a fun restaurant where they typically have tribute bands or cover bands or party bands. . ETX Brewing Co. is always open to having great music, with a nice mix of different genres. . The Garage Bar caters to more rock bands and music lovers . Moore's Store in Ben Wheeler, Tx caters to red dirt country, blues, rock . Cowboy's Tyler caters to red dirt and country . Red Rooster Icehouse in Hawkins, Tx which has a lot of country red dirt . Coyote Sam's Bar & Grille is where Douglas, Ian Power and Marc Beevers play on Tuesday nights. . We at Kiepersol are starting to have music, so stay tuned as we start to book more variety and shows. . . Douglas' Tips for Musicians/Bands - 1) Forget the money, 2) Don't forget the love of music. It should be about your passion of music, not money or fame. 3) Reach out for help or collaborations. No man is an island, so you will need help at some point. 4) Help other bands, musicians or local talent. You can both be in competition with other local bands AND advocate for the local community at the same time. The more people that come to Tyler, Tx and East Texas, the more opportunities other bands and musicians will have to play. . visit us at www.kiepersol.com

Entrepreneur and author Lisa Carol Pulliam with KE Kelly Doherty - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 8 . . Lisa Carol Pulliam’s new book signing event for Souls in the Sand, will be on Dec 12, 2018 at the Distillery of Kiepersol. https://www.facebook.com/events/575934399512054/ . AA Production by Alma Allen is going to join us at Kiepersol for this event and sing for us! . Lisa wrote her book Toes in the Sand, to inspire people to change the direction of their lives and circumstances for the better. Lisa was able to start mentoring and having conversations with other women who went through similar struggles and had stories of their own. Uimpact publishing encouraged Lisa to write a second book, with a collection of stories from people she has had conversations with or mentored. Each chapter is written by a different woman, with a theme of one-word inspirations that would become the book, Souls in the Sand. At first, Lisa didn't think the idea was tangible, do to the circumstances in her life at that time. After taking some time to marinate on the idea of the book, she realized that all of the pieces were in places, she just had to start the process of documenting and collaborating with the other women. The overarching theme of the book is women overcoming adversity or difficult situations. . Lisa chased success and business because society teaches that we can do anything. However, it was at the expense of her marriage, family and her health. She finally had some wake-up calls, where she needed to change her perspective and change directions. She needed to stop and put her toes in the sand and relax. . Lisa asks "What is the next most courageous step you can take in your life?" . Alma Allen is friends with Lisa and talks about her life journey to end up in Texas as well as her love of music. She will have her first album available for purchase at this special book signing event. . Embark Women will benefit from the proceeds of book purchase and ZYMBOL jewelry. www.zymbol.net . Business Development and Customer Service with Tony Johnson - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 7

Business Development and Customer Service with Tony Johnson - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 7

Business Development and Customer Service with Marnelle and Tony Johnson - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep. 7
.
.
We at Kiepersol like to highlight the blessings within our community and bring to light the good things to be thankful for.
.
Tony Johnson worked with Brookshire's for 37 years and developed a lot of management skills while discovering his talents. He now is now running a company STI (Speak To Inspire) Consulting. Marnelle and Tony have been very active in the East Texas community, which inevitably caused them to cross paths.
.
Kiepersol is grateful for Brookshire's as they have partnered with us and carried our products in their stores for over a decade!
.
Marnelle: "Tony is one of my favorite people! If you're looking to learn, he is ready to teach."
.
During Tony's time in leadership positions, he picked up on the essentials that allow any organization or business to keep moving forward successfully. Tony talks about how you can see customers or individuals within an organization, have great experiences and great service. Sometimes, however, you can experience great service, but end up with a bad experience. The reason Tony started STI Consulting is that we (businesses) need to get better at providing great customer experience and help businesses to deploy empathy. People don't make their decisions to do repeat business based on their service but based on personal previous experiences.
.
Tony talks about how Brookshire's is family oriented, family run, locally minded and provides much more than "just a grocery store and pharmacy."
.
Tyler, Texas has a culture that is hungry for great service and experiences. The ones that succeed end up providing the best experiences.
.
Marnelle talks about how she remembers first meeting Tony when he was managing the Bullard, Texas Brookshire's Grocery store. Tony's store had run out of Kiepersol wine, so he was kind enough to call Marnelle and sternly request that we restock his shelves or he would find a new vendor to replace our shelf space. Marnelle apologized and responded by immediately sending someone with a new order of wine. Marnelle didn't feel belittled or shame but understood that Tony was holding her accountable with clear expectations. Which shows that Tony cared so much for his customers, that when he ran into an empty shelf, he took the initiative to communicate clearly what his needs were. Marnelle's response showed that she cared for Tony and his needs as well. Sometimes, great service and experience require a fire under your hiney.
.
.
Tony provides 3 tips that people can take away and apply to their careers or jobs to be succesful:
1) Set, develop and communicate clear expectations that you want to see.
2) Accountability. Everyone wants to be liked, sometimes accountability feels like we're punishing or pushing people away. If you're friends with everyone or hold no one accountable, you will not be very effective, as a team member, owner, manager or even customer. People actually desire to be held accountable. Accountability protects your customer's experience as well as your entire organization.
3) Learn how to motivate people, through positive appreciation for work accomplished by those individuals or teams. It is completely meaningless to set expectations, hold accountability and NOT motivate through appreciation. This is an important step in developing long-term confidence and success in your customer's experience.
.

Michael McClendon - winemaker, talks Rosé and Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 6

Michael McClendon - winemaker, talks Rosé and Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 6

Michael McClendon - winemaker, talks Rosé, varietals, vintage, and Kiepersol - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 6
.
.
.
Michael McClendon is originally from Van, TX where Michael attended high school. He managed to get a scholarship to UT Tyler where you got a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. He got a call from Dr. Don Killebrew about an internship at Kiepersol. Michael didn't drink wine at that time and was surprised to find out there was even a Winery in East Texas. Michael met Pierre and Marnelle, working his way into the craft as a winemaker.
.
Michael believes that Bourdeaux varietals grown here at Kiepersol are what sets us apart, along with the fact at we are 100% Estate Grown. This does present challenges in the short-term but creates long-term success. No two vintages of grapes harvest or wines are the same at Kiepersol, which forces us to have to make choices that highlight special characteristics of the fruit that will change the experience of the wine. Things such as how much hang time the fruit has, how to prune and when to prune go a long way in determining the quality of the wine. Once the grapes make its way into the wine production facility, there are a lot of techniques and factors that go into creating special characteristics of the vintage.
.
Michael loves scientific discovery, considering himself between an "impresario and a farmer."
.
"Farmers are some of the first scientists." Michael points out how farmers were always thinking on their feet, figuring out contingency plans for different consequences during each growing season.
.
Michael dispels the idea that Texas winemakers and specifically East Texas winemakers are hillbillies or without class. With sophistication, Kiepersol actively seeks to make the best wine available on the global market.
.
With a heavy influence on the Rosé production at Kiepersol, Michael talks about the idea behind it. It's a red wine made in a white wine production. White wines sometimes get a quick and light pressing with the skins, leaving a different tint. Rosé can be processed the same, giving it a light red/pink or more of a rich color and palate. Rosé is blended with multiple styles of wines and can range in the hue of color based on its blend.
.
Kiepersol was talking to some Sommeliers about wanting more dry Rosé available in Texas. Which created the conditions and inspiration for us to formulate our current 2017 Rosé.
.
Here in Texas, we seasons of extreme heat, which we sometimes don't feel like drinking a full-bodied red wine, so we prefer something lighter, like rosé. Michael loves a nice Sauvignon Blanc, but sometimes a good Rosé hits the spot.
.
There is a belief about how Texas makes dry rosé just as good as anyone else in the world. Which speaks testament to the various AVAs and terroir throughout Texas.
.
Michael as an impresario wanted to experiment and break the rules in winemaking with the Kiepersol Rosé Reserve by oaking it and using the best grapes grown to accomplish some complex results. Here in USA, it's like being in the wild west for winemakers, as they have a lot of freedom to try new things out. Compared to the old wine world, where each region has a lot of laws and regulations in what style of grapes they can grow or make into wine.
.
Not only did Michael and his team create a Rosé and Rosé Reserve, but he also created a canned Rosé called Flight. Flight is something completely outside of the box, it cannot be seen. Since our wine is great, we are able to have the freedom to experiment in this new format. This delicately sparkling rosé was created to be enjoyed in the format that people want to enjoy their wine. Flight allows us to educate and bring new people to understand and appreciate wine. You can take Flight to a picknick or bbq or to an event where glass is typically prohibited.

Create with Christie joins us today to talk about art - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 4

Create with Christie joins us today to talk about art, hand-lettering and mental health through art - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 4 Hosted by Michael Roth
.
.
.
.
Topics:
Christie is a good friend of ours who hosts her Hand-Lettering Class at our Salt Kitchen which is attached to the Winery Tasting Room at Kiepersol.
.
"I am a Creative Coach, I like to pull out of you, your creative side!" Christie
.
Hand-Lettering is an art where you draw shapes and form beautiful letters that don't require you to be good at handwriting or be an artist, I just help you with the basics to do art.
.
Christie started off as a teacher and there was a time where the school programs stopped offering art class to students. Which broke her heart and motivated her to engage a lot of classroom activities that incorporated art.
.
Art eventually became self-therapy or a hobby. She then started to teach a scrapbooking class, since at that time it was a huge part of her community. Eventually, she opened a studio and her desire for art was motivated by money or incentives, which bogged her down. So she shut her studio down and started an Etsy shop. Now five years later, she still runs her shop, but it was time for her to go back to one of her passions, inspiring others through teaching art. Since technology advanced in the last five years, she was able to start teaching in a completely new platform. She was able to start a website where she can teach people all over the world online and here at the Winery Tasting Room at Kiepersol. This freed her to teach and do art out of the PASSION for it, not money or incentives.
.
Christie became self-aware of her mental health and needs, by changing her environment or surroundings which allowed for a healthy state of being.
.
Christie did some research to share on mental health and shared some tips.
.
Christie answers the questions "What is art?" Since there are so many ways to express yourself or perform art. If you look at many different musicians/songwriters and how they derive most of there music from life experiences of pain. By using the art of music or songwriting, they are able to work through the pain and result in the ability for joy or good things to come in to play.
.
Tip # 1) Making Art Reduces Stress - Art isn't about perfectionism, but more expressing your feelings or thoughts on to a canvas, paper or into music.
.
Tip # 2) Marking Art can reduce or distract your cyclical depression or negativity by helping you focus on what is important. "29% of doodlers recall more information." This is why listening to the radio or to podcasts while doing other tasks makes time go by faster or more enjoyable. You can listen to podcast and drive, or do the dishes or clean the house. So you can distract your lack of desire or the complaints in your head by taking the time to distract or stimulate your mind in other ways.
.
Tip # 3) Doing an art form that you love, releases endorphins and decreases cortisol (stress hormone) which reduces anxiety, creates a healthy state of mind, it can ground you mentally bringing you into the very moment.
.
If you wish to read more on the scientifically discovered benefits of doing art, read here:
www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-make-art-even-if-youre-bad-2016-6/#1-making-art-may-reduce-stress-and-anxiety-1
.
If you've never Hand-Lettered, you're probably going to hate it at first, but it's not about being perfect or executing the perfect hand strokes. No professional basketball player just picked up a ball and made the perfect basket, once, then suggest that they were "successful." So too hand-lettering is an acquired skill, but the goal isn't perfection, it's to stretch the mind in new ways.
