The Kilted Lantern Podcast

This short address pre-commemorates a special event for dreamers and Sci-fi officionados alike as your host says a few words on the greater importance of one of Sci-fi's most indelible franchises.

This is the first episode of Season 3. Things have fallen behind of late, but this episode starts a new format and contains some announcements for future plans. It still has the recurring Kilts and Cosplay segment as well as a special introduction. The topic to be discussed in this one makes it the much requested Batman episode. And boy we did our diligence when talking about the various live action Batman adaptaions. Don't worry though. We recorded this episode before "The Batman" hit theaters. So it is guaranteed spoiler free.

This is a particularly self indulgent episode where the host gives a spoiler peppered and opinionated review of Masters of the Universe: Revelations. But it is still capped off with the familiar segments for the solo episodes; Kilts and Cosplay, and Geek History.

This episode was intended to cover the subject of women's representation in geek culture and fandom. It's a huge topic that involves far more discussion than any one episode can cover. Therefore this is labeled as part one and there will be more discussion of it in the future. Of course there are the expected segments of Kilts and Cosplay and The Character Spotlight.

This special episode marks the one year point from the first episode. The listener selected topic is my thoughts on the upcoming Amazon Lord of the Rings series. And that discussion is framed by the Kilts and Cosplay segment that touches on kilts in the workplace and cosplay mash-ups. In conclusion we have a reading from one of Tolkien's lesser known works.

This is an episode with the usual bells and whistles. We talk about the various types of plaids worn ith kilts and some thoughta about filters and "shopping" your cosplay photos. The Character Spotlight shines on Abe Sapien from the Hellboy franchise and this all frames some thoughts about Sci-Fi's greatest debate; Star Trek or Star Wars

This episode includes some practical summertime kilt advice to keep you from hurting, a bit about convention behavior and a nerd's view on social obligation as presented in popular culture. It's finished off with a segment on Cecil B. DeMille's contribution to cinema and why that's important to geeks like himself.

In this episode which more than makes up for the super-short Steampunk episode, we have a lengthy segment about kilts at funerals. That is followed up with some words on diffusing lightsaber blades for cosplay. The discussion time has me joined with the hosts of "We Frelling Love It: A Journey Through the Niche and Nerdy" as we discuss pop-cultural heroes and how they've inspired us. The character Spotlight in this episode is none other than my favorite Galactic Bounty Hunter; Samus Aran.

This rather short episode doesn't skimp on the usual segments which cover kilted fire and firework safety and LARP costuming. After which a there is a short topic discussion about Fan Fiction. Then, we're off to the moon.

In this episode we get the usual Kilts and Cosplay segement with the topic being Highland headwear and prop firearms. It is followed up by a discussion with a very special guest, the host's wife, Jessica Hunt. They share a few memories and some advice for geeks who are either in love or seeking it out. The episode is finished up with the Character Spotlight which is shining on Green Lantern Simon Baz.

This episode runs a bit short, but it has all of the regular segments. But, here's hoping that this will get things back on track after a stretch of technical issues and time constraints. The topic is Steampunk and I hope it inspires you to take a look at this multifaceted genre.

In this all too delayed episode, you get all of the usual segments. Kilts and Cosplay talks about kilted wedding attire and costume footwear cheats. And the topic of discussion is the challenge of being an OG nerd from back-in-the-day while dealing with the modern nerd world. The Character Spotlight shines on the transitional hero, The Phantom and gives way to a bonus segment about the pulp hero movies of the 90s. As an added feature there is an apologetic limerick written just for you listeners.

This episode is kicked off in common style with the Kilts and Cosplay segment. It then turns to the slightly chaotic thoughts of a history nerd who has seen and read too many moments of dubious levels of accuracy. It is then closed with a piece on Hans Christian Andersen.

The show opens with "Kilts and Cosplay" which talks a bit more about great kilts and then about how to hide your glasses safely. After that, the show goes down a more serious road with returning guest Paul Kleman and The Geek Page founder Greg Bowen. The discussion is about the nerdy legacy of hand-me-down fandoms and how we recieve and pass down the things we love. Then, in the "Character Spotlight", is DC's Star Sapphire, Carol Ferris.

This episode includes the usual "Kilts and Cosplay" segment that touches on great kilts and project safety. Additionally, it also has the "This Month in Geek History", which pays tribute to the oft-forgotten Kong co-creator Edgar Wallace. After that the discussion topic goes down a more serious road as the host talks about the moments in fandom that hit us where it sometimes hurts, and why those moments pull us in.

This second episode of the new year/season is in the new format and includes the usual Kilts and Cosplay segment and a Character Spotlight segment focusing on Marvel's Moon Knight. The interview with Sam Spradlin runs long as we dive into the Mariana's Trench of pop-culture subjects; remakes, reboots, and continuations. We even touch on the Canons of Narrative Art as described in JRR Tolkien's letter #210 (In the Carpenter collection) as we break down successful and unsuccessful remakes and reboots.

This is the first episode of the new season and the beginning of the new twice monthly format. It contains the standard Kilts and Cosplay segment and, being the first of the month episode, it is also the home of the reformatted This Month in Nerd History segment. Both of those have a correction added to them that is not very well blended and I apologize for that. Then the discussion starter topic kicks off with some fun over thinking about a popular childrens show from back in the day which quickly "derails" into thoughts on popular culture's affects on those of us who embrace it.

In this episode we have the usual segments plus some announcements reguarding the next season, which starts in January. Then we have an interview with Andrew Tomlin about a few of our favorite villains and villains on the whole. It is followed up with the Nerd Hypothetical, a few holiday special recommendations, and the Character Spotlight. The character in said spotlight is the Marvel Comics Earth 616 Santa Claus.

This episode was made amidst one of the biggest moves of my life and a rather bad stretch of allergies. However, it all somehow managed to come together. There is the usual Kilts and Cosplay advice segment in addition to the Nerd Hypothetical. We also have the Character Spotlight, which this month is shining on (or through) the DC comics villain, Gentleman Ghost. All of those frame the truely informative conversation with Hawkworld founder, Tim Board. This episode contains the usual kilt and costume tips along a rather lengthy panel style discourse on what makes a horror movie a classic. It wraps up with a word on The Demon, Etrigan as the subject of our Character Spotlight segment. It intoduces the new segment: The Nerdy Hypothetical.

In this bonus episode I give some suggestions to help you feel that Halloween nostalgia and conduct an interview with Orey Kimbler where we delve into what makes a good horror director.

In this introductory episode, you speak the oath the first time with your host. After that, the discussion ensues with a cosplay tip, a kilt tip, This month in Geek History (with a special micro segment about Agatha Christie), and a talk about JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and its impact on the life of your host. The character spotlight for this episode focuses on Jubilation Lee of X-men fame.
