Anxiety, Self-Care and Covid-19.
Why Covid-19 is causing you anxiety, and what to do about it. Some initial research into the first month of COVID-19 found mental health difficulties were at least twice as prevalent as in non-pandemic circumstances. For some people the restrictions around COVID-19 are a blip in their lives, for others the impact is significant and ongoing. And, as to be expected, the people most impacted are the most vulnerable in society.   The need for practical, positive, flexible self-care to manage this ongoing anxiety and stress is clear. In this podcast I share with you some positive and practical self-care tips from my Live YOUR best life: The RoadMap to Personal Wellbeing for Women who do too Much and the Positive and Practical Self-Care for Mental Health Professionals Programs, based on the Five Foundations of Self-Care. For further information on anything in this podcast email Kim at creatingconnectionsthatmatter@gmail.com And of course, if your level of stress and anxiety is significant please seek professional assistance.  I am available for online consultations, there are a number of organisations providing free support, in particular Beyond Blue, otherwise check in with your GP as your first point of call.- _____________________ How can I feel more connected?  If you are seeking the answer to that question, you have come to the right place. How to move from judgement to acceptance in three steps.
Yep, the judgement episode - that I mucked up (but don't judge me!).  I could have rerecorded, but thought it apt to leave it the way it was. The steps discussed: 1. Catch your thinking 2. Replace the 'should' 'word. Try "I notice I'm feeling...",  "I notice I'm thinking..." 3. Look objectively at the situation. 4. Send them loving kindness. If you are holding on to judgement - maybe there are other things you are holding on to to,   Download this checklist and journal prompt - The First step from Overwhelm to Calm.  _____________________  How can I feel more connected?  If you are seeking the answer to that question, you have come to the right place. Are scattered self-care options working for you? 5 questions you can ask yourself to create intentional self-care
In the rush to support each other with recommending self-care strategies, it can lead to a scattergun approach.   What you may find more helpful is an intentional self-care approach.   Practicing tuning in and checking in with yourself is at the centre of an intentional self-care approach. Self-care is about taking responsibility for your mental and physical health.  Your self-care needs will vary depending on your life stage; your family and personal demands; your physical and mental health; and other factors unique to you.  And is best not left to chance.   Creating structure around immediate, short-medium term and long-term health is important. My Intentional Self-Care Program is divided into 5 modules: Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, Meaning and Connection. In this episode I take you through 5 questions you can use in your daily check in that will help you identify what self-care strategies are the best for you today.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Whether you are looking to find your authentic self for the first time, enhance your self-care; or whether you want to move out of loneliness, this podcast is for you. Are you expecting too much of yourself?
As a mother you carry around a bundle of expectations in a 'normal' life.  Today I revisited my resource on taking the first step from overwhelm to calm to assess it's value for right now.  I found that it basically all still applies.  There are a few more expectations added on, and some losses to examine.  I have therefore added a new journal prompt to look at the losses. When  you take the time to examine the usefulness of the expectations you carry, you are looking after your cognitive self-care.  Cognitive self-care is one of the give areas of self-care addressed in Your Roadmap to Personal Wellbeing Program for no BS* Mums.  The other four being Physical Self-Care, Emotional Wellbeing, Connection and Meaning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Connection is the "energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued..."  (Brene Brown). 5 ways to improve connection with your daughter.
If you have a daughter and want to help strengthen your bond with her, reduce her sense of isolation and help protect her mental health, here are five ways that can help. Flexibility - of ways to communicate, when and where to communicate.  Be open to situations that arise.   Time - take the time to be there, to tell them you love them, to look them in the eye when they are coming and going. Acceptance - let go of your expectations and work with what is. Curiosity - cultivate curiosity and wonder.  Allow the space to watch them develop and grow.   Forgiveness - of them and of yourself for what was done and not done.  Start each day anew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connection is the "energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued..."  (Brene Brown). Are the 'shoulds' ruling your life?
How many times a day do you hear this word come out of your mouth?  I ‘should’ go to the gym, I ‘should’ got for a walk, I ‘should’ call my friend, I ‘should’ clean the house, I ‘should’ do the grocery shopping, I ‘should’ stay back at work and finish that report, I ‘cant’ go out I have too much to do, ‘I shouldn’t feel like this.  The list goes on. So, what’s wrong with saying ‘should’.  I’ll give you a hint. How do you feel when you say ‘should’? If you’re like most people it probably creates a heavy feeling.  It’s a burden, a chore, another expectation, something else to add to you to do list.  It can create guilt and shame.  The more you use these rigid words the more disappointed, angry, depressed or guilty you are likely to feel. Listen to find out one easy way of tackling the 'shoulds'.   --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a world where loneliness and isolation are epidemic, how do you find your way back to connection? Step back and get a different perspective
It's easy to get caught up in the little details of our life and not see the whole picture.  If you want a practical example of perspective, do a jigsaw puzzle, (or even a wasgij puzzle for an extra challenge).  Notice what happens when you stop doing the puzzle and take a break - you will often find things are clearer when you go back to it.  Or ever had someone come along and know straight way where a piece can go that you've been trying to fit somewhere for ages?  That's the difference perspective can make!   Using perspective is part of cognitive self-care, and like connectedness, cognitive self-care is one of the key pillars to your wellbeing.  Perspective allows you to see what is going on in your life with clarity - what are you really thinking and feeling?  What truly matters?  How can you be seen, heard and valued?  Connection is a key part of your self-care road map; of your own personal wellbeing plan.    In this series we focus on Connection, as well as other self-care measures - Cognitive self-care, Emotional self-care, Physical self-care, and Meaning.  If you are ready for a new perspective on self-care and connection subscribe to be kept up to date with the latest podcasts. Striking connection gold with adult children
If you have adult children you know finding time to connect with them can be tricky - but it is so important you do. Connection ticks 1. I met new people - connecting with peers 2. I met I knew from online and had never met before - strengthening online connections 3. I worked with clay - connecting with nature. 4. strengthened my connection with my profession - as it was a professional workshop Cognitive mental health ticks 1. I learnt something new 2. I stepped out of my comfort zone in terms of driving to a different location and cohosting a new workshop Meaning mental health tick 1. As you approach the end of the year and evaluate what you have achieved and where your life is at, take the time to reflect on your connections, and in particular your understanding of self. Children tend to want to discover who they are and are so excited when they find out new things about themselves.  Do you do this?  How would it be to tap into that curiosity and reconnect with your true self. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a world where loneliness and isolation are epidemic, how do you find your way back to connection? Brene Brown describes connection as the "energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued..." . Join me, Kim Dunn, Psychologist, to find out how to reconnect with yourself, others and the world around you, so that you can feel more valued, happier and more alive. It's Ok if your Mother's Group doesn't work out. Day 11/90
Were you in a Mother's Group?  How did it go?  Maybe like some people you're still friends with those mum's 5, 10  or 20+ years out.  Or maybe you're like me and just never felt like you belonged. When you're sleep deprived, don't know what you're really doing, suffering post natal depression, maybe your child isn't doing what all the other babies are doing, it can be really hard to feel like you belong.  It's not always enough to bond over the shared difficulties of having a new baby.  There are so many differences - your relationship with your spouse, family traditions, personalities and values. And sometimes those differences mean this belonging, it just isn't going to come, and that's OK.   Keep looking for another group - for me I found it in the Australian Breastfeeding Association.  Because there philosophy matched with some of key values.   And don't forget this was all before social media, so it was much harder to find niche groups. Belonging is a journey, it can take a lot of twists and turns to find your home. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a world where loneliness and isolation are epidemic, how do you find your way back to connection?  Join me on exploring reconnecting with  yourself, others and the world around you.   Subscribe to be kept up to date with all podcasts in the challenge.   You can contact me at youngminds.psychology@gmail.com, or find out more information at www.kimdunn.com.au.   You are also welcome to join us at https://www.facebook.com/groups/calmconfidentconnectedmothers/?ref=group_header, where mothers come together to help each other increase connection and move from overwhelm to calm.

Yes I'm a psychologist. No, I can't read your mind but... I do have a superpower… I can help you stop time…. How many things are going through your mind right now? All those thousands and thousands of thoughts. And most of them are about things that have happened or may happen. Very few are about the here and now…. We have an epidemic of business and an epidemic of loneliness---coincidence? How do you stop the business?  The feeling that time is racing away from you? Watch and I’ll take you through it. How do you know if you are practicing connection? Four questions to ask yourself
Day 4/90 Brene Brown describes connection as "the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgement; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.    You have constant opportunities throughout the day to connect or not connect.  In here you will find four questions you can ask yourself, and I let you know how I went with them today.   1. Did you listen to yourself today?  2. Did you act in accordance with your values?  3. Did what you do bring you energy, or did it leave you depleted?  4. Did you judge yourself or others?   --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a world where loneliness and isolation are epidemic, how do you find your way back to connection?  Join me on exploring reconnecting with  yourself, others and the world around you.   Subscribe to be kept up to date with all podcasts in the challenge.  You can contact me at youngminds.psychology@gmail.com, or find out more information at www.kimdunn.com.au.

How to start creating connection when you are a busy mum.
When you're a busy mum carrying the bulk of the mental load of running a house, raising children and often outside work as well, it's easy to feel disconnected ; to feel that the life you are leading isn't quite what you expected; to feel unseen, unheard and not valued. This wasn't what parenting was meant to feel like. That voice inside your head says "I should be spending more time playing with the children, I should be home earlier, I shouldn't yell, I should be calmer." When you feel that disconnect from how you would like things to be and how they are - where do you start? In this podcast I outline one way you can begin to bridge the connection gap. To increase your sense of being valued and create a renewed sense of self. As a special freebie you can access the handout of how to take the first steps from Overwhelm to Calm - especially for busy mums https://mailchi.mp/f009b27939b3/fromoverwhelmtocalmthefirststep.

When we use our time and energy judging ourselves and others, there is no space to see, hear and value ourselves and others.   How judgement gets in the way of connection.  It's time to stop judging yourself and others.   Day 2/90.
