How many English accents are there in the world? Let me guess, you're thinking American, British, Australian, possibly South African. And what about grammar and vocabulary? Does it change in each country you go to? Let me break down the numbers for you. There are 195 countries in the world, and 45 of those countries have at least half the population who can competently speak English.

This podcast for people to continue learning English by being exposed to multiple accents in real-life conversations.

Accented Introduction

Are you an English learner, but you actually haven't heard a real conversation? When you're in your English class, you hear these fake conversations that your teacher plays and the person is speaking in a perfect British or American accent. But then after you get your English certificate, you go to an English speaking country and you don't understand anything. Welcome to Accented the podcast; this is where you hear real conversations.

Hi, I'm Kimberly Law, the host of Accented. Did you know that there are 527 million native English speakers out there and there are 1.5 billion people who are learning English? That is 20% of the world's population. So when you go out and you actually use English, you are going to be, probably, speaking to somebody who's not a native English speaker.

Here's just an example of the different ways that people say thank you: Thank you is said in 8 different accents.

I've just played for you eight different accents. The way that people say, thank you is different. So imagine you're in an English speaking environment and you're having conversations with people from all over the world. At times, it's going to be difficult to understand what they're saying.

Have no fear, Accented is here. In each episode, I will interview an English speaker and you will hear their story. The podcast title will list the country the guest is coming from, so you can get an understanding of their accent. Accented is released on the 15th and 30th of each month.  Bye for now.
