How to Start a Newsletter featuring Carol Tenwalde and Judith Rothenstein-Putzer

How to Start a Newsletter featuring Carol Tenwalde and Judith Rothenstein-Putzer

"If something weird is going to happen, it is going to happen to a Tenwalde" Something delightfully weird happened to Carol Tenwalde when Cate Blanchett wore a statement necklace that looks remarkably similar to Carol's Twisted Sister design. Carol's phone and inbox lit up with messages from friends, family, and followers of her newsletter. Newsletters are a key way for photographer Judith Rothenstein-Putzer to stay in touch with the community surrounding her alcohol transfer artwork, too. While Carol and Judith have unique perspectives about how to publish an artist's newsletter, they both love to reconnect with old and new friends through the art and stories featured in their newsletters.

Listen to our latest podcast for creative insight about what it takes to build a newsletter following and how valuable a newsletter can be for every artist.

Carol Tenwalde

A lifelong crafter, Carol has a bold style and likes to create and wear unique one-of-a-kind jewelry that stands out from the crowd. From creating her family's Halloween costumes to decorating for the local dance club, Carol found a passion for creativity. "As I got older, I fell in love with giving my creations to the people I cared most about. There is no better gift to give or receive than that of something you have created." Now, Carol takes beading to the next level, creating beautiful one-of-a-kind statement necklaces using interesting combinations of gemstones, beads, and fibers and inventing a special twisted wire technique she calls "The Twisted Sister." It makes a beautiful statement piece. Every necklace is original!

Judith Rothenstein-Putzer

Judith retired from a successful Occupational Therapy career about ten years ago and returned to her roots as an art major. A juried member of the Sonoran Arts League and the Arizona Art Alliance, she has exhibited in several galleries in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Rothenstein-Putzer and her husband love to travel, which provides many photo opportunities in addition to the ones she finds in her own backyard. At school Judith explored a variety of media, but “was smitten by the magic of photography the first time I set foot in the darkroom.” She moved from film to digital and kept pushing the envelope more, discovering the technique of Alcohol Transfers through local art workshops.  Rothenstein-Putzer describes the process as a "hybrid between photography and printmaking."  With additional experimentation, she discovered that adding pen and ink to the final image makes the colors pop and images more 3-dimensional. Each image is one-of-a-kind.

3D Art & Social Media Marketing with Sandy Ashbaugh and Pat Isaacson

3D Art & Social Media Marketing with Sandy Ashbaugh and Pat Isaacson

This week, Pat Isaacson (Pats Glass Studio) and Sandy Ashbaugh (Contemporary Ceramic Artist) discuss how to display and marketing three-dimensional art through social media and in galleries. There are some special considerations and techniques to keep in mind when translating the dimension of space through flat images.

Pat Isaacson - Pats Glass Studio

Pat Isaacson was a programmer and systems analyst for many years, working for IBM in Salt Lake City and Honeywell in Chicago and finally starting her own business. “There was always something new to learn when working with computers. It was a creative and rewarding vocation for me.”

In the early 90's Pat developed a love of glass art and started collecting glass pieces. A few years ago she decided to try her hand at creating glass and purchased a small kiln.  Little did she know how it was going to take over her life!  She has now added a second kiln and any available funds are spent on classes, glass, and tools. (and her electric bill!)

“I enjoy selecting the color schemes and combinations for my glass pieces, and strive to create patterns and shapes that please my eye based on years of experience in making and appreciating art, and influenced by my love of architecture and mathematics.”

Pat is a juried member of the Sonoran Arts League and Arizona Designers and Craftsmen.

Sandy Ashbaugh - Contemporary Ceramic Artist

Ceramic artist Sandy Ashbaugh has been working in clay for over 30 years. She uses a traditional hand-building method of slab construction and sgraffito, yet achieves a modern aesthetic. Among her best-known pieces are those from her uniquely designed and handcrafted, sake set collection, as well as her lidded vessel series. The latter was published in Lark Craft’s “500 Raku,” juried into various shows, and purchased by public and private institutions.

Sandy draws inspiration from architectural and interior design elements, like those from the Bauhaus movement, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Frank Gehry. She obtained her BFA from Florida Atlantic University and has worked in clay ever since.

Residing in Arizona, she is passionate about art education and has been involved with local schools and communities, teaching art as well as coordinating art programs and shows since 2004.

How to Brand Your Small Art Business with Jacki Cohen and Julie Bergman

How to Brand Your Small Art Business with Jacki Cohen and Julie Bergman

This week, branding mavens Jacki Cohen and Julie Bergman discuss brand development - how-to, elements to consider, why branding is so important, and how to get the most out of your brand to grow your small business. Jacki Cohen of Jacki Cohen Glass Art Designs and Julie Bergman of Coyote House Design share their knowledge and experience with us. When considering your brand, Julie points out, "There's a lot to think about with that. Who am I? What am I trying to sell? ...A lot of people want to know about you, your story along with your art."

Jacki Cohen - Jacki Cohen Glass Art Designs
"My favorite part of creating art is experiencing that magic moment when someone connects with a piece of my art. I receive such pleasure when my work brings a smile to someone’s face. I want my art to find its forever home and for the owners to smile every time they walk by it. My goal is to have my art create a small sphere of happiness in someone’s home or office or to be the perfect gift. I also love doing commissions. Creating custom work allows me to really get to know someone so we can create the perfect piece. I love what I do and I know how fortunate I am to have my passion for my career. When I am working in my studio, I will get so involved that time stands still."

Establishing New Art Galleries (In the Middle of a Global Pandemic) with Joye DeGoede and April Howland

This week, fine art creatives and gallery owners Joye DeGoede and April Howland join the Curious Kirby crew to discuss how to establish a new art gallery. With recent knowledge of how to accomplish this challenge in the middle of a global pandemic, Joye and April share their success stories and encouragement. As April puts it, "Don't be afraid to ask... the worst they can say is no and that doesn't change anything... where can I find a yes. I'm going to find one eventually."

Joye is the owner of JoyEful Gallery - Joye DeGoede Fine Art which opened in January 2021 Joye is also the artist behind the original JoyEful Party Animals®.  Internationally recognized and collected artist Joye DeGoede of the original JoyEful Party Animals® works juxtapose reality with fantasy, inspiring the viewer to see the fun in the mundane and the vast opportunities for joy in our everyday world.  Joye, says “I love painting the surrealistic mixture of animals imitating human habits and in their natural habitat to bring empathy to wildlife conservation...

April Howland
April has been been a professional artist for over 20 years. After studying under a wonderful art mentor in Sedona, Arizona, and receiving her degree, she sought out various acclaimed artists and instructors and began honing her fine art skills.
Inspired by nature and animals, April’s primary focus remains steady in her thriving wildlife series and domestic animal portrait business. As she travels the globe from Alaska to Africa for inspiration, April’s eye for composition and design combined with her love of color enables her to create rich and unique art pieces. Her one-of-a-kind style is a successful blend of contemporary and realism. She uses a variety of materials to accomplish her works but her methodology remains consistent...

Teaching Art, Creating Community: Casey Cheuvront and John Gates

Teaching Art, Creating Community: Casey Cheuvront and John Gates

Fine art creatives John Gates and Casey Cheuvront join Curious Kirby in the Zoom studio to discuss plein air painting and highlight some outstanding art programs, including the Yosemite Conservancy Art Programs. Be sure to listen to our teaser at the end of the episode about an upcoming conversation about non-fungible tokens.

Casey Cheuvront is an impressionist oil painter who makes Southwest-themed nature and wildlife come to life, inspired by years spent hiking, exploring, mountain biking, and even hang gliding. Her favorite shoes are hiking boots. "I believe we are incomplete without a connection to, and appreciation of, the natural world, and that we should cherish and protect it... I want to promote deeper respect and connection with our vanishing wild places and the creatures that call them home."

John Gates is a watercolorist who paints in a mosaic or stained glass style to evoke a healing message about human brokenness. "Brokenness -- whether pieces of clay, glass, or in our lives-- can be overcome, and we can be put back together to be beautiful souls with meaningful lives.  My art is a reminder and encouragement to focus on recovery, peace, and being whole, even if you feel like you are broken into pieces."

Non-traditional Galleries and Marketing Through Collaboration with Nancy Breiman and Bob Hogan

Non-traditional Galleries and Marketing Through Collaboration with Nancy Breiman and Bob Hogan

Nancy Breiman and Bob Hogan join the Curious Kirby team in the Zoom studio to discuss the how-to's of setting up galleries in storefronts, resorts, and other non-traditional marketing opportunities to boost sales and grow an artist's following. These surprisingly effective ways to meet new patrons and art fans require some preparation and collaboration with the businesses that serve as hosts. Nancy and Bob recommend doing your homework prior to approaching the space owner and find these cooperative efforts very rewarding.

Nancy Breiman is an accomplished fine art oil painter with an emphasis on florals following a career with IBM. An Industrial Arts Education major in college, Nancy spent a career in corporate America and returned to oil painting a few years before retiring. Nancy shares her passion for art through volunteering, teaching art workshops, and providing one-on-one instruction in oil painting. Nancy was elected to the Board of Directors with The Sonoran Arts League in December 2020.

After a career in radio and marketing, Bob Hogan shifted his creative focus to acrylic landscape paintings inspired by travels and near his home in Anacortes, Washington. Displaying his paintings in hotels, vacant storefronts, microbreweries, marinas, restaurants, and office spaces, Bob finds new clients with shared interests and insights into the demographics of his fans.

Season 3 Kicks Off with a Discussion with Jan and Rick Griggs about Shipping Fine Art, Leveraging Twitch, and Inspiration from Creative Dialogue

Season 3 Kicks Off with a Discussion with Jan and Rick Griggs about Shipping Fine Art, Leveraging Twitch, and Inspiration from Creative Dialogue

Season 3 Episode 1 of the Curious Kirby Podcast is live! In this episode, Jan and Rick Griggs join Kyle Elliott and Kirby Plessas in the Zoom studio to discuss the unexpected, inspired results of a creative dialogue between artistic media, creatives, and clients. The wife and husband duo work in complementary media: Jan creates vibrant acrylic abstracts and florals on canvas and Rick produces statement pieces from live edge wood and stone. Our conversation includes questions about what it takes to get fine art to their clients. Shipping fine art canvases and tables can be accomplished with great care and success without breaking the budget. Finally, Rick offers strategic tips for leveraging the Twitch platform as an artist, a creative way to connect with a supportive community with some unexpected results.

Jan’s work is acrylics on canvas or heavy watercolor paper with a variety of tools to move and manipulate the paint. “My artistic process is intuitive and spontaneous. My parameters are the color pallet I choose and the shape and size of the surface I am painting on. I have a very basic idea of what I want to create and let the flow of color and paint guide me.”

Rick's work is live edge tables, exotic wood decor, and custom wood pieces. "I combine nature (wood and stone) with my sense of architecture, style and imagination to create each work so its natural beauty and qualities flourish. Each piece is an experience in tactile and visual beauty."

Interview with the amazing Rafi and Klee - we touch on community, social media, youtube, websites and more!

Contrary to popular opinion, there are some people out there that are actually working harder than ever before during this quarantined crisis. Of course the health care workers, teachers, grocery store employees, deliveries and post services, etc. But I know a lot of artists that are using this time to produce produce produce. Partly to build inventory but partly to also just give their emotions and creativity an outlet. They just can't help it.

I've also been busy. I've moved all my cyber seminars online, started webinars, am creating an artist resource (coming soon) and started a 3x a week art chat. And I'm interviewing people and producing this podcast.

Actually, this specific episode of the podcast was supposed to come out last week - but kept getting bumped in my to-do list by the next urgent task as well as the huge task that editing a podcast turns out to be.

So I fa-chunked it.

This podcast's interview is with the AMAZING Rafi and Klee. If you haven't heard of them, watched their videos, or listened to their podcast yet - you're welcome. Seriously, I love this duo. And they just released a video on fa-chunking (go watch it, I'll wait) which spoke to me and resulted in this post right now!

So, listen to the podcast and don't forget to join my art chat on Monday and Friday mornings 8Pacific/11Eastern and for Wednesday happy hour at 4Pacific/7Eastern. Morning chats have a topic while the happy hour is open to anything. To join, either message me on Instagram (@curiouskirby or @kirbyplessasart) or join my Curious Kirby Creatives Facebook group.

Enjoy the podcast.

Podcast Season 2 is live! With Joyce Hagen of Big Walls Big Art!

Podcast Season 2 is live! With Joyce Hagen of Big Walls Big Art!

Season 2 kicks of in a "big" way! In this episode, I interview Joyce Hagen of bigwallsbigart.com (On Instagram @bigwallsbiggerart).

But before the interview, I discuss one of the basics for your social media marketing strategy - keep your viewers on your posts as long as possible. This isn't only to benefit you, but it will also benefit the social media tool you are using, whether it is Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok or even YouTube. The longer you can keep the attention of the viewer, the better for the social network and the more your posts will be shown via the algorithms. Listen to learn a few strategies.

Episode 9: Interview with Vendvana and "Do I need to upload my art on every social network?"

Episode 9! Meet Mary Ellen, Eric and Danielle of Vendvana!

Do you need to be on every social network? Last episode I touted the value of being an early adopter - but that doesn't mean you must be everywhere. But you must be somewhere. Make sure you are using something to bee seen!

I love Rafi and Klee, artists in the Pensacola, FL area. They are not only very informative and helpful, but they have the best personalities! Check out their Youtube (and vlog) and podcast! And specifically the episode when they address about this topic.
