At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 55 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 384- Of the Father's Love Begotten
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode continues their look at Advent Hymns.  LSB 384, Of the Father's Love Begotten. Author: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, "The Christian Pindar" was born in northern Spain, a magistrate whose religious convictions came late in life. His subsequent sacred poems were literary and personal, not, like those of St. Ambrose, designed for singing. Selections from them soon entered the Mozarabic rite, however, and have since remained exquisite treasures of the Western churches. 1 Of the Father's love begotten ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the Source, the Ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore! 2 O that birth forever blessed, when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race; and the babe, the world's Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore! 3 This is he whom heav'n-taught singers sang of old with one accord, whom the Scriptures of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long expected; let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore! 4 O ye heights of heav'n, adore him; angel hosts, his praises sing: all dominions, bow before him and extol our God and King; let no tongue on earth be silent, ev'ry voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore! 5 Christ, to thee, with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be, honor, glory, and dominion and eternal victory, evermore and evermore!

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 54 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 357 "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode continues their look at Advent Hymns.  LSB 357 "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" The text for "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" comes from a 7 verse poem that dates back to the 8th century. It was used in a call and response fashion during the vespers, or evening, service. The original text created the reverse acrostic "ero cras," which means "I shall be with you tomorrow," and is particularly appropriate for the advent season. This ancient advent hymn originated in part from the “Great ‘O’ Antiphons,” part of the medieval Roman Catholic Advent liturgy. On each day of the week leading up to Christmas, one responsive verse would be chanted, each including a different Old Testament name for the coming Messiah. When we sing each verse of this hymn, we acknowledge Christ as the fulfillment of these Old Testament prophesies. We sing this hymn in an already-but not yet-kingdom of God. Christ's first coming gives us a reason to rejoice again and again, yet we know that all is not well with the world. So along with our rejoicing, we plead using the words of this hymn that Christ would come again to perfectly fulfill the promise that all darkness will be turned to light.

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 53 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 332 - Savior o9f the Nations Come
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode begins their look at Advent Hymns.  LSB 332, "Savior of the Nations Come." Author (attributed to): St. Ambrose Ambrose (b. Treves, Germany, 340; d. Milan, Italy, 397), one of the great Latin church fathers, is remembered best for his preaching, his struggle against the Arian heresy, and his introduction of metrical and antiphonal singing into the Western church. Ambrose was trained in legal studies and distinguished himself in a civic career, becoming a consul in Northern Italy. When the bishop of Milan, an Arian, died in 374, the people demanded that Ambrose, who was not ordained or even baptized, become the bishop. He was promptly baptized and ordained, and he remained bishop of Milan until his death. Ambrose successfully resisted the Arian heresy and the attempts of the Roman emperors to dominate the church.

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 52 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 516 "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying"
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode continues their look at Reformation Hymns.  LSB 516, "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying." 1 "Wake, awake, for night is flying," the watchmen on the heights are crying; "Awake, Jerusalem, arise!" Midnight hears the welcome voices and at the thrilling cry rejoices: "Where are the virgins pure and wise? The Bridegroom comes: Awake! Your lamps with gladness take! Alleluia! With bridal care and faith's bold prayer, to meet the Bridegroom, come, prepare!" 2 Zion hears the watchmen singing, and in her heart new joy is springing. She wakes, she rises from her gloom. For her Lord comes down all-glorious and strong in grace, in truth victorious. Her star is risen, her light is come! Now come, O Blessed One, Lord Jesus, God's own Son. Sing hosanna! We answer all in joy your call; we follow to the wedding hall. 3 Lamb of God, the heavens adore you, the saints and angels sing before you with harp and cymbals' clearest tone. Of one pearl each shining portal, where, joining with the choir immortal, we gather round your radiant throne. No eye has seen that light, no ear the echoed might of your glory; yet there shall we in victory sing shouts of joy eternally! Psalter Hymnal, 1987 Philipp Nicolai (b. Mengeringhausen, Waldeck, Germany, 1556; d. Hamburg, Germany, 1608) lived an eventful life–he fled from the Spanish army, sparred with Roman Catholic and Calvinist opponents, and ministered to plague-stricken congregations. Educated at Wittenberg University, he was ordained a Lutheran pastor in 1583.

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 51 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 656-657 "A Mighty Fortress is Our God"
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode continues their look at Reformation Hymns.  LSB 656-657, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." Luther, Martin, born at Eisleben, Nov. 10, 1483; died at Eisleben, Feb. 18, 1546. 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of Sabaoth Lord, And there's none other God; He holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us. We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not overpow'r us. This world's prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none. He's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain With His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict'ry has been won; The Kingdom ours remaineth.

Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. This episode continues their look at Reformation Hymns.  LSB 668. 1 Rise! To arms! With prayer employ you, O Christians, lest the foe destroy you; For Satan has designed your fall. Wield God’s word, the weapon glorious; Against all foes be thus victorious, For God protects you from them all. Fear not the hordes of hell, Here is Emmanuel. Hail the Savior! The strong foes yield To Christ, our shield, And we, the victors, hold the field. 2 Cast afar this world’s vain pleasure And boldly strive for heav'nly treasure. Be steadfast in the Savior’s might. Trust the Lord, who stands beside you, For Jesus from all harm will hide you. By faith you conquer in the fight. Take courage, weary soul! Look forward to the goal! Joy awaits you. The race well run, Your long war won, Your crown shines splendid as the sun. 3 Wisely fight, for time is fleeting; The hours of grace are fast retreating; Short, short is this our earthly way. When the Lord the dead will waken And sinners all by fear are shaken, The saints with joy will greet that day. Praise God, our triumph’s sure. We need not long endure Scorn and trial. Our Savior King His own will bring To that great glory which we sing. Author: Wilhelm Erasmus Arends Arends, Wilhelm Erasmus, son of E. F. Arnds, pastor at Langenstein, near Halberstadt, was born at Langenstein, Feb. 5,1677. He became, in 1707, pastor at Crottorf, near Halberstadt, and in 1718, pastor of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Halberstadt.

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 48 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 666 - O Little Flock, Fear Not the Foe
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. Today we look at a historically significant hymn that has it roots in the 30 Years War and the army of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus.  Without his intervention in the 30 years war, it is possible that the protestant Lutheran Church would have been wiped out.  The hymn carries great theology in simple words and tune, and is one that every Lutheran should memorize and learn.   1 O little flock, fear not the foe Who madly seeks your overthrow; Dread not his rage and pow'r. And though your courage sometimes faints, His seeming triumph o'er God's saints Lasts but a little hour. 2 Be of good cheer; your cause belongs To Him who can avenge your wrongs; Leave it to Him, our Lord. Though hidden yet from mortal eyes, His Gideon shall for you arise, Uphold you and His Word. 3 As true as God's own Word is true, Not earth nor hell's satanic crew Against us shall prevail. Their might? A joke, a mere facade! God is with us and we with God— Our vict'ry cannot fail. 4 Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer; Great Captain, now Thine arm make bare, Fight for us once again! So shall Thy saints and martyrs raise A mighty chorus to Thy praise Forevermore. Amen.

Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. Today we look at a commonly sung Communion Hymn, I Come O Savior To Your Table.   1. I come, O Savior, to Thy Table, For weak and weary is my soul; Thou, Bread of Life, alone art able To satisfy and make me whole: REFRAIN: Lord, may Thy body and Thy blood Be for my soul the highest good! 2. Oh, grant that I in manner worthy May now approach Thy heavenly Board And, as I lowly bow before Thee, Look only unto Thee, O Lord! 3. Unworthy though I am, O Savior, Because I have a sinful heart, Yet Thou Thy lamb wilt banish never For Thou my faithful Shepherd art! 4. Oh, let me loathe all sin forever As death and poison to my soul That I through wilful sinning never May see Thy Judgment take its toll! 5. Thy heart is filled with fervent yearning That sinners may salvation see Who, Lord, to Thee in faith are turning; So I, a sinner, come to Thee. 6. Weary am I and heavy laden, With sin my soul is sore opprest; Receive me graciously, and gladden My heart, for I am now Thy guest. 7. Thou here wilt find a heart most lowly That humbly falls before Thy feet, That duly weeps o'er sin, yet solely Thy merit pleads, as it is meet. 8. By faith I call Thy holy Table The testament of Thy deep love; For, lo, thereby I now am able To see how love Thy heart doth move. 9. What higher gift can we inherit? It is faith's bond and solid base; It is the strength of heart and spirit, The covenant of hope and grace. 10. This feast is manna, wealth abounding Unto the poor, to weak ones power, To angels joy, to hell confounding, And life for us in death's dark hour. 11. Thy body, given for me, O Savior, Thy blood which Thou for me didst shed, These are my life and strength forever, By them my hungry soul is fed. 12. With Thee, Lord, I am now united; I live in Thee and Thou in me. No sorrow fills my soul, delighted It finds its only joy in Thee. 13. Who can condemn me now? For surely The Lord is nigh, who justifies. No hell I fear, and thus securely, With Jesus I to heaven rise. 14. Though death may threaten with disaster, It cannot rob me of my cheer; For He who is of death the Master With aid and comfort e'er is near. 15. My heart has now become Thy dwelling, O blessed Holy Trinity. With angels I, Thy praises telling, Shall live in joy eternally.

Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know. Today we look at a historic hymn that is rich in theology.  At the Lamb's High Feast we Sing.  Each phrase and stanza introduces another picture of God and His grace as it is revealed in Jesus Christ.   1 At the Lamb's high feast we sing Praise to our victorious King, Who has washed us in the tide Flowing from His piercèd side. Alleluia! 2 Praise we Him, whose love divine Gives His sacred blood for wine, Gives His Body for the feast-- Christ the victim, Christ the priest. Alleluia! 3 Where the paschal blood is poured, Death's dread angel sheathes the sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go Through the wave that drowns the foe. Alleluia! 4 Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal victim, paschal bread; With sincerity and love Eat we manna from above. Alleluia! 5 Mighty Victim from the sky, Hell's fierce pow'rs beneath You lie; You have conquered in the fight, You have brought us life and light. Alleluia! 6 Now no more can death appall, Now no more the grave enthrall; You have opened paradise, And Your saints in You shall rise. Alleluia! 7 Easter triumph, Easter joy! This alone can sin destroy; From sin's pow'r, Lord, set us free, Newborn souls in You to be. Alleluia! 8 Father, who the crown shall give, Savior, by whose death we live, Spirit, guide through all our days; Three in One, Your name we praise. Alleluia!

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 43 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 743 - Jesus Priceless Treasure
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know.  Today we examine an emotional, kick Satan in the teeth kinda hymn, Jesus Priceless Treasure.  Written by Johann Franck, who lived the first 30 years of his life during the 30 years war, this hymn confesses the faith and the resulting Christian life in a fantastic manner.   Lyrics: 1 Jesus, priceless treasure, Fount of purest pleasure, Truest friend to me. Ah, how long in anguish Shall my spirit languish, Yearning, Lord, for Thee? Thou art mine, O Lamb divine! I will suffer naught to hide Thee, Naught I ask beside Thee. 2 In Thine arms I rest me; Foes who would molest me Cannot reach me here. Though the earth be shaking, Ev'ry heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear. Lightnings flash And thunder crash; yet, though sin and hell assail me, Jesus will not fail me. 3 Satan, I defy thee; Death, I now decry thee; Fear, I bid thee cease. World, thou shalt not harm me Nor thy threats alarm me While I sing of peace. God's great pow'r Guards ev'ry hour; Earth and all its depths adore Him, Silent bow before Him. 4 Hence, all earthly treasure! Jesus is my pleasure, Jesus is my choice. Hence all empty glory! Naught to me the story Told with tempting voice. Pain or loss, Or shame or cross, Shall not from my Savior move me Since He deigns to love me. 5 Evil world, I leave thee; Thou canst not deceive me, Thine appeal is vain. Sin that once did blind me, Get thee far behind me, Come not forth again. Past thy hour, O pride and pow'r; Sinful life, thy bonds I sever, Leave thee now forever. 6 Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in. Those who love the Father, Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yea, whate'er I here must bear, Thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesus, priceless treasure!

Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know.  Today we examine a popular hymn, LSB 797 "Praise the Almighty."  Is it a hymn that Every Lutheran Should Know, or is it less important than others in the hymnal? Lyrics: 1 Praise the Almighty, my soul, adore Him! Yes, I will laud Him until death; With songs and anthems I come before Him As long as He allows me breath. From Him my life and all things came; Bless, O my soul, His holy name. Alleluia, alleluia! 2 Trust not in rulers; they are but mortal; Earth-born they are and soon decay. Vain are their counsels at life's last portal, When the dark grave engulfs its prey. Since mortals can no help afford, Place all your trust in Christ, our Lord. Alleluia, alleluia! 3 Blessed, oh, blessed are they forever Whose help is from the Lord Most High, Whom from salvation can nothing sever, And who in hope to Christ draw nigh. To all who trust in Him, our Lord Will aid and counsel now afford. Alleluia, alleluia! 4 Penitent sinners, for mercy crying, Pardon and peace from Him obtain; Ever the wants of the poor supplying, Their faithful God He will remain. He helps His children in distress, The widows and the fatherless. Alleluia, alleluia! 5 Praise, all you people, the name so holy Of Him who does such wondrous things! All that has being, to praise Him solely, With happy heart its amen sings. Children of God, with angel host Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Alleluia, alleluia!

At Home in Your Hymnal Episode 41 - Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know - LSB 819 - Sing Praise to God the Highest Good
Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know.  Today we examine one that Pastor Poppe has always liked, LSB 819 - Sing Praise to God the Highest Good.  Is it a hymn that Every Lutheran Should Know, or is it less important than others in the hymnal? Today we take a look at a hymn that is popular, and discover that is somewhat weak and generic in its theology.  Written by Johann Jacob Schutz, a friend and companion of the founder of the Pietist movement of Lutheranism in the 17th century, Philipp Jakob Spener.  Pietism influenced many who came after it, including John Wesley and Methodism.   This hymn focuses on our action of praising God, and mentions little about God's work of saving us through the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Listen to Pastor Poppe and Moline objectively examine this hymn and find out how to use it properly in worship.   Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God, the highest good, The author of creation. The God of love who understood Our need for His salvation. With healing balm our souls He fills And ev'ry faithless murmur stills: To God all praise and glory! 2 What God’s almighty pow'r has made, In mercy He is keeping. By morning glow or evening shade His eye is never sleeping. Within the kingdom of His might All things are just and good and right: To God all praise and glory! 3 We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness And came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, Who is by one and all adored: To God all praise and glory! 4 He never shall forsake His flock, His chosen generation; He is their refuge and their rock, Their peace and their salvation. As with a mother's tender hand, He leads His own, His chosen band: To God all praise and glory! 5 All who confess Christ’s holy name, Give God the praise and glory. Let all who know His pow'r proclaim Aloud the wondrous story. Cast ev'ry idol from its throne, For God is God, and He alone: To God all praise and glory!

Composed in the 16th century by Lutheran Pastor Paul Speratus, Salvation Unto Us Has Come was written while Speratus was imprisoned for being a faithful preacher and awaiting death by fire. He was later released and began a close working relationship with Luther. He died August 12, 1551, confessing the Truth of justification by grace through faith in Jesus alone. It is one that we should memorize and sing more often.  Listen to learn more! Booklet of all verses from the Lutheran Chorale Book

Pastor Poppe and Pastor Moline continue a series looking at the Hymns Every Lutheran Should Know.  Today we examine LSB 708 - Lord Thee I Love With All My Heart.  This one will definitely be sung at Pastor Moline's funeral someday!   Composed in the 16th century by Lutheran Pastor Martin Schalling the Younger, Lord Thee I Love is one of the most sampled and used Lutheran hymns every written.  It has been used by Bach, Schutz, Buxtehude and more.  It is one that we should memorize and sing more often.  Listen to learn more!   Lord, Thee I love with all my heart; I pray Thee, ne'er from me depart, With tender mercy cheer me. Earth has no pleasure I would share, Yea, heav'n itself were void and bare If Thou, Lord, wert not near me. And should my heart for sorrow break, My trust in Thee can nothing shake. Thou art the portion I have sought; Thy precious blood my soul has bought. Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord, Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word. Yea, Lord, 'twas Thy rich bounty gave My body, soul, and all I have In this poor life of labor. Lord, grant that I in ev'ry place May glorify Thy lavish grace And help and serve my neighbor. Let no false doctrine me beguile; And Satan not my soul defile. Give strength and patience unto me To bear my cross and follow Thee. Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord, In death Thy comfort still afford. Lord, let at last Thine angels come, To Abram's bosom bear me home, That I may die unfearing; And in its narrow chamber keep My body safe in peaceful sleep Until Thy reappearing. And then from death awaken me, That these mine eyes with joy may see, O Son of God, Thy glorious face, My Savior and my fount of grace. Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend, And I will praise Thee without end.
