21. Biological Infant Sleep: Reclaiming Intuitive Motherhood | Taylor Kulik

21. Biological Infant Sleep: Reclaiming Intuitive Motherhood | Taylor Kulik

Taylor Kulik started educating & supporting mothers from around the world about biological infant sleep and responsive parenting after her own journey with her first child. When her daughter was an infant and became increasingly more difficult to place into a crib for daytime or nighttime sleep, Taylor found herself between 1 or 2 options: sleep training (since that seems to be the only answer from the internet, friends, family, or professionals), or accidentally falling asleep herself while trying to nurse her daughter back to sleep. As a healthcare professional, Taylor had heard every fear-based message in the book about the "dangers" of co-sleeping, but once she realized that this was the most instinctual way to sleep with her baby, she expanded her research and realized that much more people were co-sleeping around the world than what she previously believed. Since then, Taylor's mission has been to offer safe co-sleeping information to mothers that they are often withheld from healthcare professionals. We invited Taylor on the podcast to dismantle sleep myths & sleep taboos, and offer what often is the missing piece in our motherhood journey that can optimize the entire family's sleep at night, while honoring biological needs & healthy attachment.

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Our culture's obsession with infant sleep
  • Our experiences with a more biological approach to sleep
  • How the sleep training industry created a "problem," and then sold us a "solution"
  • Sleeping through the night is not a rite of passage
  • Your body is enough
  • Setting yourself up for realistic expectations
  • How to support mothers
  • Factors that go into baby's sleep
  • Allowing dependence is how you facilitate independence
  • Is our system set up to support mothers & babies?
  • The implications of the lack of a village
  • Addressing the foundation of biological needs
  • An honest talk about "mom shaming"
  • What is bedsharing?
  • Biologically normal infant sleep patterns

17. The Big Picture of Tongue Ties | Michale Chatham

17. The Big Picture of Tongue Ties | Michale Chatham

During her 25 year career in dentistry, Michale Chatham helped build & create one of the first integrative centers for tongue tie releases. Thousands of cases deep, her health collapsed after her own tongue tie release. Her RN, IBCLC, massage therapy, and myofunctional background allowed her to zoom out and see the full picture of fascia & body expression. What she learned is that tongue ties need individual, holistic, big picture care. They are not a one-size-fits-all standard.  Most practitioners look right to the mouth when they suspect an oral tie, but Michale takes a much different approach: one that allows us to differentiate between a real tie, or simply a tight frenum.

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Michale's background & experience
  • Michale's health collapse after her tongue tie release
  • Tongue tie revisions: do they "work"?
  • The holistic approach to oral ties
  • Why "fix" and work" are empty words
  • Why revisions are controlled trauma
  • The importance of knowing your outcome goals
  • Finding a provider that supports you
  • Are tongue tie revisions necessary?
  • Are tongue ties more common now, or are we just now focusing on them?
  • Practical tips for your baby from home
  • It starts with you
  • Big announcement!

15. Has Your Pursuit Of Health Become Unhealthy? | Josh & Jeanne Rubin

Josh & Jeanne Rubin, who you might know as @realfoodganstas on Instagram, are some of the true OG's in the metabolic health world. These two have paved the way in not only thyroid & metabolic health, but in how to create a sustainable health journey that you truly enjoy. The Rubins have 20 years of clinical work under their belt and have pursued education through a wide range of programs, including the CHECK institute (Paul Chek) & the RCP institute (Morley Robbins). While the Rubins encourage a food-first approach to healing, they emphasize that it can't stop there. We HAVE to address the mind. We HAVE to address the nervous system. "The biology of the individual cannot be separated from the social and psychological aspects of their life." Our mindset shapes our biology. We can be checking boxes all day long, but we can get lost in the process and create more chaos in the stress of "doing all the right things." Has your pursuit of health become unhealthy? Find out in our season 2 finale!

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Josh & Jeanne's health philosophy: it always comes back to the cell
  • Introduction to the nervous system
  • How our nervous system impacts how we see the world
  • How our nervous system gets shaped as a child
  • How developmental trauma occurs
  • How trauma impacts our healing
  • The importance of "play" in reconnecting to our bodies
  • Getting rid of the chaos in our lives
  • Preserving the innocence & play of our children
  • The emotional component of dis-ease
  • The importance of simplicity on a health journey
  • Where to start on your journey to avoid getting overwhelmed

13. Optimizing Your Breastfeeding Journey | Therese Dansby, IBCLC

13. Optimizing Your Breastfeeding Journey | Therese Dansby, IBCLC

We sat down with RN & IBCLC Therese Dansby to merge perhaps one of the most important combinations for motherhood: metabolic health + breastfeeding. In a culture where there seems to be two sides yelling "breast is best!" or "fed is best!," we're here to say that perhaps "nourished & supported breastfeeding is best." The hard truth is that breastmilk nutrition does not stay fixed. The nutrition of your breastmilk is absolutely determined by your own nourishment as a mom. So that does that mean we're saying to outsource to formula to ensure that baby is getting what baby needs? Absolutely not! We're saying that moms. need. NOURISHMENT. And moms need support to make that happen- whether that's through help, lifestyle shifts, financial readjustments, or simply the environment in which the mom feels like the power is back into her hands.

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Therese's metabolic health journey
  • Mercer's theory of maternal attainment
  • Why it's important to put power back into the mom's hands
  • How breastmilk composition changes over time
  • Is "fed" really best
  • What is "costs" a mom metabolically to breastfeed
  • Why it's important to support your metabolism prior to pregnancy + postpartum
  • A whole-body approach to baby's "food intolerances"
  • Postpartum mood disorders: a "chemical imbalance" or a lack of nourishment/support?
  • Society's obsession with infant sleep
  • Postpartum diet culture
  • Calorie needs for breastfeeding moms
  • Postpartum hormonal changes
  • Return of cycle while breastfeeding
  • Forms of natural birth control while breastfeeding
  • Examining the advice of supplementing babies with vitamin D & iron
  • Addressing oral ties systemically

12. Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Depression, Diabetes, and Heart Disease | Kate Deering

In this week's episode, we teamed up with the legendary Kate Deering to tackle some of the most controversial topics in modern health: hypertension, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, and heart disease. Is our modern health care system helping us when it comes to understanding & actually treating these conditions, or are we simply managing symptoms? With over 25 years under her belt in the health + fitness industry, Kate Deering is a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, & experience. She has done it all, tried it all, and finally crashed & burned at the age of 38 before discovering Dr. Ray Peat & the goldmine of metabolic health. Suddenly, everything made sense, and her dedication to become an expert on her own physiology led her to write her own masterpiece: How To Heal Your Metabolism. Her book essentially can be summed up as this: your metabolism is the root of your symptoms. Kate offers us her refreshing & honest experience on the highs & lows of her healing journey.

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Kate's journey with diet culture, fitness, & metabolism
  • Modern medicine view of disease vs bioenergetic view of disease
  • What "metabolism" really means
  • How to assess your metabolism
  • High blood pressure: is it really the salt?
  • High cholesterol: is it really the saturated fat?
  • Depression: is serotonin really the "happy hormone"?
  • Diabetes: is it really the sugar?
  • Heart disease: again, is saturated fat the enemy?
  • How Kate defines health

8. Breaking Down Popular Diets

For the season 1 finale, we are going out with a bang & discussing POPULAR DIETS! We polled our audience to see which diets you guys wanted to hear about most, and the winners were Paleo, AIP, Keto, Whole30, and Intermittent Fasting. Our heart behind this episode is to paint the whole picture when it comes to these restrictive diets, and the whole picture includes the fact that going on one of these diets can leave you more depleted & further into dysfunction than where you were before you began. They do not address the root cause of symptoms, and they can also trigger orthorexic thoughts, food fears, & MORE food sensitivities. On this episode, we will break down each of the 5 diets by what they get right, what they get wrong, the missing minerals & nutrients, & why they feel "good" at first. Lastly, we're here to share that there IS a different way on your health pursuit, and one that supports your body on the most basic physiological level.

Join us as we sit down & discuss the following:

  • Why restrictive diets don't address the root cause of symptoms
  • How restrictive diets can trigger orthorexia & food fear
  • Food sensitivities - the inaccuracy of popular tests, & what we recommend instead
  • The Paleo diet
  • The AIP diet
  • The Keto diet
  • The Whole30 diet
  • Intermittent fasting
