Laura Genoves - LLLT assists with basic family law matters at a reasonable cost with reasonable solutions

Laura received her bachelor's degree from UW and then returned to UW School of Law to attain an LLLT certification. She understands firsthand the challenges of divorce and single parenting. She mentions in this episode how she began supporting clients after her own divorce.

In addition to training as a legal technician, she has completed collaborative law training, basic mediation training, and advanced family law mediation training. Currently she is an intern at the Dispute Resolution Center with the goal of becoming a Washington Mediation Association - WMA - certified mediator.

She is passionate about alternative dispute resolution and guiding clients to a respectful resolution. It is always less costly to reach an agreement than to litigate an issue. Going to court takes both an emotional and financial toll on all parties. She encourages clients to seek mediation and look for creative solutions to the outcome in their family law situation. She does not assist with high conflict cases.

LLLTs are licensed by the Washington State Bar to practice family law under the rules set forth in APR 28 (Admission to Practice Rule 28.)  Since 2017, she has assisted many clients with their family law matters such as division of property and debts, establishing child support, and creating a parenting plan.

You can learn more about her services through her website:

Michaela Corning - Muslimah Maker & Barakah Collective Founder

From Michaela Corning.Com

"When I embraced Islam in 1999, I realized very quickly how difficult it was to find modest attire especially for my corporate America life. In addition to everything in mainstream retail being short, tight and cropped, if I did find something more modest it was either very frumpy and matronly or didn’t represent me culturally. I loved wearing abayas to special events or to the mosque, but not at my day-job. This need is what prompted me to start my business in 2000. I started with importing a few scarves and abayas from Kuwait and quickly my business grew. I frequently partnered with two other local sisters who also had hijab businesses, and we took part in local Eid events and hosted many “hijab parties”.

It’s always been a labor of love for me and my business has ebbed and flowed with my personal and professional life. I really enjoy finding unique and practical hijabs and modest pieces for my fellow Muslim sisters. I also find immense gratification in creating unique accessories and jewelry to give all ladies a little something special to add to their everyday outfits. Call it “boho” or “hippie chic”, but I have always been drawn to a more eclectic and free spirited look.

In addition to providing items of high quality and unique style, I want to represent a more diverse group of women. I am here to present real women wearing my brand to show the everyday Muslim woman that she can look very chic and stylish without spending an hour doing her make-up or stressing about a few pounds or laugh lines."

Matrescence The Birth of a Mother - Nadhira Razack Shares Her Birth Stories & How She Came To Deeply Trust Her Own Heart

Matrescence The Birth of a Mother - Nadhira Razack Shares Her Birth Stories & How She Came To Deeply Trust Her Own Heart

“When women find themselves feeling lost somewhere between who they were before motherhood and who they think they should be now, many worry that something is terribly wrong, when in fact this discomfort is absolutely common.”   (Alexandra Sacks)

Have you heard of Matrescence?

In the 1970’s, anthropologist Dana Raphael coined the term ‘matrescence’ - “The time of becoming a mother”. It is used to describe the physical and emotional transformation that mothers make when a baby is born. The transition also greatly effects partners and family members. Dr. Raphael, also coined the term "doula" to describe a female caregiver who “Mothered the Mother.”

Reproductive psychiatrist Alexandra Sacks explains matrescence as a ‘push and pull’ concept. New mothers strive to bond with their baby, understand their needs and make their baby the centre of their universe. This is the ‘pull’.

The push is the flip side of that where the mother is trying to re-frame this new life she has within the context of her identity, relationships, career, interests and her own physical and emotional needs.

Have you ever experienced any of the following things?

  • Feeling like you have lost your ‘old self’ but not being sure of who you really are now?
  • Feeling like you shouldn’t spend money on yourself because you don’t earn any (or as much) money now?
  • Feeling invisible, less valued, now you are “just a mom”?
  • Feeling guilty for wanting time away from you baby/children?

These are all part of matrescence. These are all part of how you have begun to evolve and change as a woman because you are now a mother.
Most likely these things have felt difficult, emotional, frustrating, lonely or confusing because you haven’t known they were part of a bigger process of change. This is where knowing about matrescence can be so supportive and powerful for women. It begins to give you a new framework to explore your experiences within. A new lens with which to view your world.

You are not alone.
Suddenly the word matrescence allows us to see we are not alone. In fact, many women struggle with the question “where did my old self go and who I am now?”

Nadhira & I connected through a community of spiritually-oriented, heart-centered entrepreneurs. We knew right away that her birth stories held gifts that could be illuminated. Her babies were the obvious blessings & there was even more.... growth & personal development unfolding.

Deepa Patel - creative facilitator and strategic thinker with a passion for the arts, social justice, conversation and life

After loosing a dear friend to cancer in 2020, I felt called to explore spiritual companioning & bereavement more deeply. I trained as a spiritual director and enrolled in year-long practice in living with presence and intention; as well as forgiveness and gratitude, while letting go of what no longer serves. I asked for a volunteer from my cohort to share their reflection on Death, Dying & Life.

Deepa bravely leapt in with her heart & agreed to be interviewed. I'm so grateful she did.

Deepa Patel is passionate about music, young people, fighting injustice and poverty and nurturing equality and creativity in our world. These areas have been the focus of her work.  Her past roles have included work as a music education producer for the BBC, a campaigner on HIV/AIDS for ActionAid, and as a Managing Director of Creative Partnerships (a national UK Government Initiative on creativity in schools). She currently facilitates programs on the art of collaboration and conversation and is Co-Director of Slow Down London, a campaign on how to appreciate and enjoy life at a different pace. Deepa is a former member of the Seven Pillars Board of Trustees and lives in England.

A Year to Live Program via The Rumi Center

This year-long program, based on the book A Year to Live by Stephen Levine, is designed for people of all walks of life and stages of life. In community, we will focus on waking up and living life more fully through the exploration of death as a spiritual practice.

Most aspects of our largely death-denying modern culture discourage us from actively contemplating the inevitability of our death, or that it may meet us at any time. The prophets and sages recommend a very different approach to the fact of life's transience: that we use remembrance of death, not to put us in a state of anxiety or morbidness, but as a contemplative practice to assist us in our journey to awaken to that which does not die but lives beyond the ephemeral nature of our lives in this world. Their lives bear witness to the fact that there is a way to die to the attachments and distortions of the ego and come to the realization of a deeper self that transcends death and the perishing realm. This is reflected in the prophetic injunction, "die before you die." This core teaching of all wisdom traditions—that we can realize that which is eternal and transcends our physical bodies—paradoxically provides the means to live more fully and more presently while savoring the gift of each precious breath on earth.

Kristin Dibeh - Childbirth Educator & Doula

Kristin Dibeh - Childbirth Educator & Doula

I've known Kristin for about 15 years. Our children attended the same homeschool support program. Even if you aren't expecting, you may know someone who would benefit from learning more about Kind Birth Services.

From her website:

My classes have been built on the foundation of 20 years of experience both teaching childbirth education and attending hundreds of births as a Professional Labor Doula. You can read more about my curriculums content and my philosophy at www.expectingkindness.com and please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. This is a comprehensive course covering everything you need to have an informed birth, with  intervention limited to necessity.  It will prepare you to understand the whole labor process, identify the stages of labor so you can use appropriate tools, techniques, and activities throughout the process. Additionally you will learn self advocacy, to identify and ask thoughtful and important questions. Making thoughtful choices leading up to your birth will provide your body and your baby every possible advantage in bringing about the safest, most loving, and welcoming birth experience possible.

Expecting Kindness Childbirth Education: My curriculum aims to educate couples using a physiologic/athletic approach to labor balanced with nurturing the emotional process of feeling comfortable and safe enough to give birth. My Doula Services are centered within my deeply held belief in the ancient, inherent wisdom of our bodies combined with the art of making informed and conscious choices.

Betsy Toll - Chaplain for the Dying, Beautiful Troublemaker & Mentor

Betsy Toll - Chaplain for the Dying, Beautiful Troublemaker & Mentor

I met Betsy Toll when I was 15. She introduced me to conscious parenting practices, sacred ecology and seva. Seva, in Sikhism and Hinduism, is a selfless service that is performed without any expectation of result or award for performing it. Seva means 'service', referring to the selfless efforts of caring for the welfare of all.  Recently, I reconnected with her and discovered she is also serving as a spiritual companion and chaplain in hospital.

Betsy Toll worked with Ram Dass on a conference in Los Angeles for Seva Foundation. Her early background in art, theater, and performance provided strong vehicles for activism on behalf of the natural world and her commitment to social justice.

Also a student of Joanna Macy, in 1998, Betsy founded Living Earth in Portland, offering opportunities to explore what we love, what it means to be fully human, and how our awareness shapes our participation in our communities, our society, and our interactions with the living planet.

Other influences include Roshi Joan Halifax and Frank Ostaseski. A writer and editor, Betsy also serves in hospital and home chaplaincy with individuals facing crisis, grief, trauma, and death. She leads dharma circles, and workshops, and offers residential retreats twice a year for Living Earth.

Contact Living Earth for information on Open Door Dharma - Early Summer.

Frank Ostaseski is a Buddhist teacher and a leader in the field of end-of-life care. He is the Guiding Teacher and Founding Director of Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco. https://fiveinvitations.com/

Summer Cleanse For Restoring Good Digestive Health & Inner Smile Meditation

Summer Cleanse For Restoring Good Digestive Health & Inner Smile Meditation

Both stress and toxin build-up can cause lymph stagnation. This can lead to:

  • impaired immunity
  • disease
  • bloating
  • fluid retention
  • swelling
  • inability to lose weight
  • PMS
  • low energy

So clearly, we want to keep that lymph moving along! One of the best ways to do so is massage. A lymphatic massage is a specific form of massage that targets the flow of lymph in the body. It uses a specific amount of pressure and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate the lymph, moving it towards the heart, back into circulation, and therefore mobilizes toxins for clearance. However, all massage is helpful for moving lymph through our bodies!

A normal young adult body contains up to 450 lymph nodes, of which 60-70 are found in the head and neck, 100 in the thorax and as many as 250 in the abdomen and pelvis.

Some other great ways to encourage lymphatic drainage include staying hydrated (well-hydrated tissue help moves out waste material), exercising regularly, dry brushing, practicing yoga, and developing a deep breathing practice.

Perimenopause and menopause, even for women who never experienced digestive issues in the past can create gas, bloating and constipation. Why now? Because estrogen helps regulate cortisol, so our reactions to stress become more pronounced and stress slows down digestion.

You can manage your stress and improve your digestion. I love supporting my clients with extra care during cleanses as they reset their gut microbiome. In order for our bodies to properly detoxify - we need to practice resting and relaxation techniques. Why not enjoy every minute of it?

Meet Amy Terepka - Earth Medicine Practitioner + Reconnective Healer & HSP

Meet Amy Terepka - Earth Medicine Practitioner + Reconnective Healer & HSP

From Amy Terepka's Website:

I work with heart-felt and sensitive souls who are looking to gain a sense of worth, meaning and belonging by improving their relationship with their bodies and the Earth so they can:

  • Feel like they’re worthy and enough just by being themselves.
  • Feel like they have something to give back.
  • Feel safe and rooted in their body.
  • Understand the language of their body and learn to trust themselves.
  • Find a sense of belonging and place by having connection with the Earth.

By getting out of your head, sinking down into your body, you can find your root wisdom, the place of connection with all life. This enables you to feel resilience in yourself to face situations in life that may cause stress and hardship. It allows you to realize you can face anything while remaining present and loving to yourself. You have the support and the strength within you.

With this shift people can feel a sense of belonging within their bodies and on the Earth, a sense of worthiness, so they can move from that place of deep inner knowing, ease and peace, not fear or insecurity.

https://www.laurajawad.com/

From Laura's website:

I am passionate about supporting people through their transition from pregnancy to parenthood.  I have birthed two babies and I am stepparent to one.

I’ve lived in 6 states and 2 countries and have enthusiastically called the Seattle-area home for the last 10 years. I’m a coffee snob, PhD-trained scientist, cat lover, runner and master procrastinator. I can never find my keys, I don’t fold laundry, I still put sprinkles on my ice cream. I like lifting heavy things and my favorite colors are pink and purple.

I am pro-science. I believe black lives matter, all bodies are good bodies, climate change is real and that womxn have a right to choose. And I acknowledge that although it shouldn’t be, womxn’s healthcare is political. Social justice and environmental justice are inextricably tied to inequities in maternal healthcare and outcomes. Wellness for womxn means choice and equity in healthcare for ALL womxn. If we’re going to work together, it’s important to me that you know where I stand on those things.

Also,

While I have multiple degrees of the higher education variety (Ph.D., M.A., and B.A.) and am passionate about learning, there are other life experiences and trainings I consider at least as important. A sampling of a few: Anglo-Saxon Spiritual Apprenticeship, Elder Initiation in Dagara Tribal Tradition (Elder Malidoma Some’), Birthing From Within Trainings, and more.

My coaching work is about connecting or reconnecting you to your own genius and/or that of your child even from preconception or very early pregnancy.

Current scientific research supports what indigenous peoples have known over thousands of year. Babies are conscious from pre-conception through the birth experience.  There are windows of opportunity throughout the circle of life that can, if supported, facilitate the deepening of meaning and fulfillment.  We either move toward life or death.  Re-visioning these for today, we can choose life, meaning, and hope.

Denise Sterchi - Perinatal Mental Health Specialist

May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month and the first week of May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week.

Did you know? 1 in 7 Moms and 1 in 10 Dads suffer from postpartum depression

During the pandemic I've been interviewing some incredible providers - I consider them part of my wrap around network of care givers.

I'm a member of PSI & a Postpartum Depression Survivor - please visit https://www.postpartum.net/ for resources & support.

For this Podcast - the whole month of May is dedicated to mothers - It's my birthday month & the month I became a mom! My services have evolved from prenatal/postpartum massage to life coaching & postpartum planning.

My First Interview is with Denise. We meet at Peace Camp & baked bread together. I reached out to learn more about her work. She works 1-1 with clients & leads a circle called This is Taking Longer Than I Expected: A Therapy Group for Moms Experiencing Postpartum Depression and Anxiety for more than six months.

From Denise's Website:

My intention for my work is to create a space for conversations that are warm and collaborative, and that are respectful of your individual values, goals, and preferences.

I hope to create a safe space where we can laugh, cry and explore together. I am active and involved in our conversations, searching for questions that might help you come to new understandings of yourself, others, and your deepest purposes for life.
I am honored to join and assist you on your journey of:

  • healing from difficult childhood circumstances such as physical abuse, emotional abuse or neglect
  • recovering from traumatic experience or injury--including traumatic childbirth experiences--or from exposure to war or natural disaster
  • decreasing or eliminating depression, anxiety, PTSD or panic attacks
  • resolving the emotional difficulties of infertility
  • working through emotional difficulties during pregnancy and the postpartum period
  • exploring if adoption is right for you
  • moving through the loss, grief and identity issues faced by all members of the adoption triad: adults who were adopted, birth parents, and adoptive parents
