Diversifying Data Podcast #16 - Surviving Testicular Cancer

Diversifying Data Podcast #16 - Surviving Testicular Cancer

In this month’s episode of Diversifying Data, we celebrate and recognise the month of Movember, with the purpose of the month being to raise awareness around men's health issues, with a particular focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Ellen Hitchcock, Candidate Attraction & Engagement Associate speaks candidly with Bailey Harrison, Kubrick Alumni member about his own testicular cancer diagnosis and how catching diseases such as testicular cancer early is critical, yet stigma and lack of awareness can create barriers to screening and treatment.

Together, Bailey and Ellen touch upon how men are less likely to get themselves checked if they feel something might not be right or talk openly about their concerns or struggles and how cultural stereotypes around masculinity and stigma surrounding mental illness for men can result in men not seeking help or support.

Bailey also speaks about the support he received, how his diagnosis impacted his mental health and the steps we can all take to support anyone that has received a similar diagnosis.

Lastly, Bailey offers useful advice to men who may have been diagnosed with testicular cancer or are worried they may be presenting symptoms.

Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer among young men, yet 62% of those who are most at risk don’t know how to check themselves. By starting open conversations and checking in on one another, it can start to break this cycle.

A huge thank you to Bailey for taking part in this episode and for bravely sharing his personal experience.

Diversifying Data Podcast #5

In this episode of Diversifying Data, Kubrick consultants Stefania Constantin and Chloe Tang reflect on their university degree choices, the impossible task of knowing what career path you should take at a young age, and the challenges that come with it; especially if you are inclined to think in a regimented, linear way.  They also discuss imposter syndrome and how it nearly stopped them from achieving their goals, the dangers of comparing yourself to others, and the importance of role models and representation when exploring career options/at the early stages of your career. Chloe also talks candidly about having ADHD and how difficult she found it to admit when she was struggling, particularly when she was first diagnosed. They also acknowledge the importance of asking for help and each recognise how uncertainty isn't a sign of weakness but is something we all experience on a regular basis.   Stefania, who didn't study any STEM subjects prior to joining Kubrick, also reflects on her concerns around entering the data field and the relief she felt when it became clear data isn't just about having a strong background in maths or science; you also need people who can think outside the box, debate ideas and see the other side of an argument.   Lastly, they highlight the critical role business has to play in creating a safe environment for neurotypical individuals where they feel comfortable reaching out to others for support, asking for extra time, or simply knowing they won't be judged for admitting when they are struggling.  A huge thank you to Stefania and Chloe for taking part in this episode and sharing your personal insights and experiences.
