One month ago today I missed a Saturday Morning Hustle for the first time in over a year due to complications from surgery. But, I didn't let missing time off work, being sore and uncomfortable while healing stop me from reaching goals and getting my work done. You can do it too.

Dont forget what it is that motivates you to put in that extra work. The people who are important in your life, a drive to be the best you can be or simply taking a challenge head on.
With the upcoming holidays are full of distractions, but you can’t let that kill the motivation that you’ve created all your long. At the same time, you shouldn’t ignore family and friends in order to put in extra work on your side hustle, start-up, self brand or small business. So how do you balance the Entrepreneur life during the holidays? Adapt.
In Nov. and Dec. your regular schedule will be tested. The “extra” time you find on nights and weekends will be less thanks to holiday parties, shopping and family time. The key is to find new, often smaller, times and situations to utlize. Stay motivated, focused and most of all organized. Use free time between work, family and fun times to prep for dedicated work times. Make the most of what you can, when you can. All without skipping out on the important people in your life.
Enjoy some time off for the holidays. Spend time with family and friends. Recharge your batteries and reaffirm your motivation.

Sorry everyone, but we didn’t get to do a show last week because I ended up with a little too much #Hustle, too much #Grind and an unplanned hospital stay. I’m OK now, and in fact I’m back at work in my home office this week trying to catch up from being off last week due to being in the hospital. Thank goodness we have so many opportunities to work remotely, digitally and other ways in order to keep the process moving along, keep our clients happy, keep our bosses happy and meet those deadlines without too much disruption thanks to modern technology. So many jobs these days can be accomplished on a laptop, a smart phone, tablet or any place that has Internet access. This made life possible for me this week for sure.
But, You don’t have to wait for an illness or accident in order to allow your staff, key members, PT or others to work remotely. The key is finding balance in the new found freedom‘s vs. accountability, deadlines, expectations and the workflow of others. This situation is different for every office, whether a start up, existing company or a digital entity that doesn’t have a physical space. The key is making sure every member of your team feels valued for what they’re contributing and not allowing anyone to “gig the system” and not pull their own weight. God luck! See you next week.

A central theme of my last four new client orientations (for The Golding Group) has been the function of Branding and Marketing as a filter to the sales funnel, not a catch-all. Too many people want their brand, marketing, advertising and PR to be "everything to everyone" which is a mistake. The best business marketing sets expectations for exactly what your business provides (and doesn't) how your product/service operates (and doesn't) and why EXACTLY they should be spending their money to acquire it. Don Draper on Mad Men once told the owner of scandalized Caldecott Farms dog food “Any agency that does not change the name is stealing your money”. She does not agree of course. Draper goes on to tell her to find a new agency because she won't follow his professional advice - and he's right!

Don Draper and I agree, anyone you hire (or hires you) has to be a "fit" in style, approach and willingness to do what works, not what's easy or what the client wants to hear. That's just stealing your money. Sometimes it doesn't work out, and the professional relationship should end.
A #SaturdayMorningHustle reminder to stay focused on what’s important for you. The reason I come in early, stay late, hustle, grind and do all the things I do for my business is because I’m trying to build something for my family to live the life we want to live. It’s not always about becoming rich and famous. It’s about doing what feels good to you, what feels right to you and what makes sense for you. When you combine those things in a business that can be profitable (and sustainable) you’re doing it the right way and not for all the wrong reasons. Understanding your “Why" (you know what I’m talking about right? Simon Sinek - Start With Why - Go look him up if you don’t know) makes it all happen in the right way. Can you combine your “Why” and your experience and your passion? Something that makes you want to work this hard, along with something that can be sustainable, for your family, the way you want live? It’s not about someone else, it’s not about society, it's about you.
Everyone wants to talk about how bad they want success, what they are willing to do for it, how long it's been on their mind (since I was a kid!). Only a portion of these same people actually have the talent to pull it off. Of that group, who is willing to hustle, grind and patiently build from the ground up? The building process is where success comes from. Not ista-fame or being an overnight sensation, but actually building a brand (or self brand) from nothing. Why? Because understanding how it was build will allow you to adapt to changes that WILL happen. The market, your audience, the competition will push back on your vision of the brand. Things will change. Will you know what to do when that change occurs? And then when it happens again (and again, and again)? The key to sustainable success is understanding every element of a business. How you got from idea to launch to audience attention to success. Skipping steps or having someone hand you a finished product does NOT do that!
We discuss a lot on the Saturday Morning Hustle including tips, advice and business insights but we also try to motivate and inspire when possible. There are two equally important aspects to creating success. #WorkSmart and then #WorkHard. You can't just do one or the other and expect to win.
#WorkSmart is the research, planning and documentation of how you will create your successful endeavor. This is your business plan, your strategy and financials. You must have these in order to create and capitalize on attention and conversion of your marketing efforts. This is a lot of work, and can be intimidating for many. But once done, this information will make decison making easy and fast with assurance you're on the right path. Very helpful when all you see is work and not enough rewards (yet). Be patient.
#WorkHard is the hustle and grind. You have to execute every single day. It's a marathon, consisting of hundreds of sprints. Stay focused and consistent. Work every aspect of your plan from the most basic item to the top-end. Put max effort into your #WorkSmart plan or it will fail. Start with a plan before #WorkHard to win!
The #SaturdayMorningHustle didn't start as a podcast, but a series of social media posts about the #Hustle and #Grind of owning your own business. These posts connect with entrepreneurs, business owners and everyone willing to work hard for what they wanted to achieve because I'm actually in the office every Saturday putting in extra work. One group that really connects with this idea are fitness professionals. No other lifestyle is more connected to "working hard every day to see results" more than the gym crowd. The irony is I am not in shape like these fitness coaches and trainers. But, we do have a similar mindset, work ethic and need to motivate others to achieve their goals. My aim is to help business people of all types, which includes fitness businesses as well. That's right, not everyone on the planet is ethical (or honest). Plenty of people you have never met (or might be very close to you) are willing to take other people's ideas and pass them off as their own. I'm not condoning it, I'm just telling you it can/will happen. But, you still need to innovate. Come up with new ideas, approaches, tactics and ways of doing things. Do not let the potential theft of your next great idea slow or stop you. Put yourself out there, and see who does it better. Focus on your audience and your success. Anyone looking for a shortcut will end up short in the end. Make them work hard to keep up with you. Stealing ideas and claiming credit is not sustainable. The most practical advice I can give you on the #SaturdayMorningHustle is this: Start every idea, project or promotion the same way you build a business. Begin with the best idea possible. Don't be an "us too" offering but really find something new or a new way to do it. Make sure that idea solves a problem for people. That makes it valuable, something people will pay you for. Set your idea apart, differentiate what it is, how it works, how you deliver it, etc.... Do all of this with your audience wants and needs in mind, not your wants (or ego). If you do that, you will have something people are willing to pay for, delivered the way they want. Last but not least, make sure it's profitable. That profit will pay back startup cost and keep you going when things are not working perfectly. If everything goes well, profit will make it possible to expand. Measure, adjust, do it all again - just better.
We’re all about the Hustle and Grind on the #SaturdayMorningHustle podcast, but today we focus (or refocus for some) on what’s really important. Don’t lose sight of why you’re trying to be successful. Put in the extra effort, but also make time for family, friends and community.

Success is a series of hurdles. Some are easy, some are harder, some seem impossible. That's the grind, this is where hustle and drive are needed. If it's worth doing, it will be hard. But, everyone on TV, social media and the internet only show you the cars, vacations and bling that comes from their (claimed) success. The grind isn't pretty and no one wants to admit they struggled, failed, got discouraged and maybe even quit (but then came back). That is the reality of anyone who has achieved a level of success that you are sitting at home hoping to emulate. True story! Do NOT be discouraged when your success journey has highs and lows. It's all part of the process. Get up early, stay up late, work on the weekend and do what you need to do for your success. Everyone makes mistakes. It happens in business and in life. No one is perfect. The key to success is what you learn from each mistake, steps you take to change so it doesn't happen again and owning up to it so you can move forward. Too many people get too focused on the small stuff or what a setback means in the very immediate short term. Take a step back and look at how mistakes and other errors are great teachers and allow us the opportunity to own up to the shortcoming. That ownership puts you in the position of earning back the trust of everyone involved. Why? Because mistakes happen, and your clients, co-workers and associates will not be afraid to trust your judgment if you make everything work for you in a positive way even when things don't go as planned. You know the story of David vs. Goliath, right? The average man David slew the undefeated giant Goliath with a simple slingshot. But how does this apply to today, and for business? Simple: Positioning. The process of competing by utilizing your business strengths, mitigating your weaknesses and never going head-to-head with your competitor greatest strengths. You can't beat Wal-Mart with price or selection but you can win the customer service battle. Find the place (the position) in your industry that maximizes your strengths without competing with others greatest strength. This gives you best advantge to win. The only way to find your truest position is be honest about your strengths/weaknesses, research your competition and execute tactics based on this information and not your ego, gut feeling or "how we've always done it" excuses. To find success, you really need the ability to change situationally. Not major changes (unless forced) but adapting along the way. Everyone I had interactions with this week needed to make changes in their organization. Some big, some small some just being open to new things. If any of them had a "how we've always done it" attitude they would have set themselves and their organizations back. Being open to change, listening to collaborative ideas and allowing the problem to be solved instead of insisting they were right was the best, most successful way to solve the problems at hand. Anyone can hold themselves back be being selfish and unbendable. Instead, look for ways to incorporate input from others to open yourself up to better ideas. You can always go back to the "old" way of doing things later if it doesn't work out, BUT you will never find a better way to do thongs without being open to the process. Until next week, good luck!

During a media interview this week, I was asked what advice I would give my younger self if I had a time machine. The interview was about business and entrepreneurship, so my response was this: Go all in, don't play it safe or over-think. Be willing to stick your neck out and take risk. Don't make reckless or stupid decisions, but do push yourself and your business fast and hard. Commit! Put yourself out there for the business you want to create and avoid holding yourself back in order to avoid potential shortfalls. Nothing great ever happens in your comfort zone. Make a plan, do your homework and then GO FOR IT with everyhtign you have. If you can't do that, then maybe the entrepreneur life isn't for you.
Treating all people well creates positive situations for everyone. Slow down, talk to people and create relationships, not just transactions. #SaturdayMorningHustle advice for the Easter weekend. Has this happened to you? Positive or negative?
In business, we always focus on customer service. But, what if we do less training on what to say and when to say it and put more emphasis on being open to the needs of the person walking in the door, calling on the phone, etc...? That would make for happier employees, customers, vendors, etc.... and that's good for business.
Too many businesses make the mistake of building an operational model that makes providing a product or service as easy as possible for the provider and not the consumer. That's backward! To create a unique, successful business model that will compete, attract and retain a highly loyal audience (best case business scenario) you must construct your operations to the wants and needs of the audience. You can't force your way of doing business onto your audience. You can try, but most likely fail. Instead, pay maximum attention to your consumer and give them what they want, how they want it. With a consumer forward business model, you now need to find ways to improve or simplify the process to create profitability. With profit, every business will fail. This combo of audience need plus profitability has a real chance to succeed and adapt as needed when your audience or industry changes. That's disruption! It's what Uber did to taxis, Amazon did to big-box retail and AirBnB did to hotels.
The best way to be a great boss, co-worker, collaborator, entrepreneur, business owner, volunteer, civic leader, etc.... is to learn the right and wrong way to lead, motivate and inspire from everyone you meet. #SaturdayMorningHustle #Advice This includes not only those people doing it all right but those bad bosses who made you want to quit, hide or just not care. The #SaturdayMorningHustle is all about making things happen while everyone else is resting. It's not enough to work hard, but you really have to set yourself apart IF you are trying to build a successful business, career or side-hustle. There's no such thing as an overnight success and there is no one singular way to achieve your goals. But, you can't just tell people you have the drive. You must show them! You also need to prove you have what it takes to build something successful, not just get lucky once. Document your hustle, grind and work process. Show how you made it work and how you can do it again. For me, it's all about the process. I don't just do it and then hand over a finished work product to my clients. No, I involve them in the process to ensure everyone understands how the decisions were made. This creates a better long-term solution for everyone involved. Then, I take my skills and do it all over again.

Today we discuss the process all Creative professionals go through. I call it the “Blank Page” Theory. You start with a blank sheet of paper. Write down where you are, point A. At the other end of the paper, write down where you need to be, point B. This can be used for creating art, design or solving a problem. Now, start adding to your point A. What do you have in place (assets), what are you trying to accomplish, why are you doing it, etc. Then, do the same for point B. What ya the finished product? A painting, a brochure, a website, a better mousetrap maybe? Now, without preconceived notions or “how we’ve always done it” excuses start connecting A to B. This is the what, how, when, etc. in problem solving. For art, it’s a sketch, then a base layer, then the details, etc. the process is still the same. Start with nothing. The best time to plan a tree was 20 years ago, but the second best time is right now. You can’t wait for the perfect time or scenario. You just have to go for it. It’s that time of year, to make New Years resolutions. If you are an entrepreneur, business owner, management, investor or self-brand you should be setting goals for your business pursuits. In addition to your goals, you need a theme for the year. A word or two that describes who you are, what you do and what you’re trying to achieve. For me, that theme is collaboration. It’s a cold and snowy #SaturdayMorningHustle one day before Christmas Eve. Just because everyone else gets a 3 day weekend is no reason #Hustlers and #Entrepreneurs should slack off. Opportunity comes from change. Don’t be afraid of new situations, even if it wasn’t your plan or idea. In fact, run at it full force. A new year is coming, a new opportunity for you to set and reach goals. Do you have the right goals and are you working hard enough (in the right way) to achieve them? The new year is the perfect time to make that evaluation.
