Book Club - Chapter 7: Breaking Free from Body Shame

Book Club - Chapter 7: Breaking Free from Body Shame

Alyssa Pike, RDN, LD and Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RDN, LD discuss chapter 7 from Jess Connolly's book Breaking Free from Body Shame. I loved this chapter. We explore just being with God and what that looks like in our lives, how God isn't in the business of rewarding spiritual righteousness with worldly success (aka a "perfect" body), and how we don't get worship and a "perfect" body - we just get the freedom gifted to us through worship. During the episode, Alyssa mentioned the book, Invitation to Silence and Solitude by Ruth Haley Barton and I've started reading that and am finding it very helpful.

My favorite quote from this episode came from Alyssa: "It’s not that thin isn’t beautiful, it’s just that it’s no more beautiful than another body size. There’s so much more to beauty than body size."

#6 February Q&A

#6 February Q&A

Answering the below questions from you guys. I hope you enjoy! For the post version, click here.

  • “How do you handle or how would you handle your kids around family that does not do intuitive eating? Such as extended family members with really unhealthy behaviors around food (very into diets, overly controlled portions, passing up meals, etc).”
  • "How can I get truly started with intuitive eating? I feel like I kind of follow the principles, but want to get better at listening to my hunger cues.”
  • “Can you clarify the benefits of structured/mechanical eating and how it compares to IE?”
  • “How do you keep social media boundaries and make it a positive place?”
  • “How much should I pay attention to food? I want to nourish myself and get enough fruits and veggies, but I don’t want to focus on it too much. Where’s the balance?”
  • "Can you discuss intuitive eating while pregnant? I know there are guidelines about gaining 25-30 lbs when pregnant, but I’d love to hear more non-diet tips for navigating a healthy relationship with food while pregnant."

#2 What's The Point of Respecting My Natural Body Size If I’m The Only One Doing It?

#2 What's The Point of Respecting My Natural Body Size If I’m The Only One Doing It?

I narrate this week's blog post to you. Covering the answer to the question above and, also, the idea that you can't get to a more peaceful place with your body if you continue to mistreat it.
