How to hype yourself & brand yourself... but not compare yourself with Lucy Werner

Welcome to our bonus episode with Lucy Werner, the founder of The Wern, a boutique consultancy for publicity & design.

She has 17-years of publicity experience both in-house and for some of London’s top agencies. In May 2021, she created HypeYourself.com an online DIY PR & brand platform for small businesses. She has written a best-selling book Hype Yourself and her second book Brand Yourself is available for pre-order now, written with the co-founder of her two children and creative director Hadrien Chatelet.

Lucy has worked with hundreds of creative entrepreneurs and teaches on all things publicity for spaces such as Cass Business School, Hatch Enterprise, UAL, Courier magazine, and Second Home.

Lucy Werner demystified PR for small businesses in the bestselling Hype Yourself: now she and her husband Hadrien are doing the same for branding. Power to the small business people!

SHOW NOTES

Buy the book: 50% of all profits will go towards Lucy and Hadrien's Great Ormond Street Fund. Lucy finished her first book as her second child was in and out of cardiac intensive care, she had to return five days after the launch of Hype Yourself for his fourth round of open-heart surgery. Isabel Foxen Duke: how to create an online business and how to not eat cake...really fast, standing up, when nobody's looking

TW: eating disorders, drug use.

This is a very personal episode with Isabel Foxen Duke, the Creator of Stop Fighting Food®, a free online training program for those recovering from diet-binge cycling and/or "feeling crazy around food."

I personally vouch for her helping me with my own eating disorder history but I wanted to have Isabel here to discuss how she built a successful online business WITHOUT Instagram or social media and going against the norms of her time.

So, if you're thinking about starting or growing an online business, this might be the episode for you.

Isabel is also the founder of the soon-to-launch Center for Weight Neutral Coaching,  an online training program for coaches and wellness professionals committed to providing diet recovery services from a weight-neutral perspective. A fixture and thought-leader in the greater Body Positive movement, Isabel has been featured in the Huffington Post, Elle Magazine, Refinery 29, and has been praised by the likes of Ricki Lake and Lena Dunham.

Her writing and free guide, How To Not Eat Cake...really fast, standing up, when nobody's looking, can be found at isabelfoxenduke.com and you can watch her free video training series at stopfightingfood.com.

Ida Norheim-Hagtun: From island life to crying on bathtubs and joining impatient optimists at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Ida Norheim-Hagtun: From island life to crying on bathtubs and joining impatient optimists at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Our amazing mentor Ida Norheim-Hagtun is the Senior Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, working in global policy and advocacy and on senior leadership engagements worldwide.

The foundation is a group of impatient optimists working to reduce inequity: ensuring more children and young people survive and thrive; empowering the poorest – especially women and children – to transform their lives; combating infectious diseases that particularly affect the poorest; and inspiring people to take action to change the world.

Ida’s role at the foundation is a mix between strategist, communicator, and ‘tour manager’, working to ensure that all global leadership engagements – whether that’s high-level political meetings, major events, or field visits – are as impactful as possible, advancing the interests of the communities served.

Ida’s background is in policy, advocacy and strategic communication for social impact, with organizations like the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Iran, the UN Relief & Works Agency for Palestine refugees in Lebanon, and Oxfam GB in the UK. She’s passionate about the unique role of the arts, creative campaigning, and digital innovation in changing hearts and minds and advancing social causes, and has been involved in a range of creative work including an award-winning Norwegian digital campaign to change attitudes around overseas development aid; film and theatre production in the Middle East and UK to challenge preconceived notions about refugees and asylum-seekers; and a mobile crowdsourcing project to save lives after the Haiti earthquake.

Ida’s educational background is focused on international relations and humanitarian affairs, at schools including the United World College in New Mexico, the London School of Economics & Political Science, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and Harvard University. A traveller at heart, Ida grew up on an island in Arctic Norway and is, partly as a consequence, deeply passionate about issues of climate change, nature conservation, wellness, and nutrition.

TIAUNA JACKSON: What is it really like to work in Hollywood? Lessons on racism & resilience

TIAUNA JACKSON: What is it really like to work in Hollywood? Lessons on racism & resilience

The first time I recorded this podcast my computer shut down and we lost all files but luckily Tiauna Jackson is very kind and allowed us to record it a second time, just as she was launching the Black Agent Network

Tiauna Jackson is a Talent and Literary Agent for The Jackson Agency. Headquartered in Century City, California, Ms. Jackson built her agency from the ground up within the entertainment industry’s most competitive market, Los Angeles.

Tiauna decided to start her own agency after finding barriers to entry not only for herself, but for artist and writers of color, LGBTQ+ identifying, and Senior Citizens. She made history by becoming the first Writers Guild of America franchise in Atlanta, Georgia; and is believed to be the first known Black woman with 100% ownership of her agency to become a WGA franchise in Los Angeles.

With her agency dedicated to the underestimated, underrepresented, and the underserved, Jackson applies a “root for the underdog” mentality to fostering the careers of emerging artists. She looks forward to providing representation that matters to the exceptionally talented artists of the world. She was featured in the New York Times, Medium, Oz Magazine, and Arizona Informant for her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion while facing adversity through resilience.

As Jenny is deaf the conversation was recorded on Zoom so the audio is not amazing, but Vicky and Ali, the AMAZING interpreters, agreed to stay on camera so we could share the conversation with subtitles on our channel - so check it out here
