Unoffendable - I Can Worship a God Like That
What does it mean to take offense? If you look up the definition of the word, offended, you will see most dictionaries say something about anger and resentment. As we get in to this, you may be thinking, like me, aren’t we allowed to be angry? What about righteous anger? Aren’t Christians supposed to be angry at people for certain things? We will talk about all these things and more through this series. As we wrap up this series, "Unoffendable," you may be asking, so what? What should we do about the anger and constant feeling of offense? The point of it all is so that people will know who Jesus is. If we will choose to be unoffendable, people will see the love that Jesus has for them through us. Here’s the deal with me today. I’m tired of all the hate. I’m tired of the racial divide. I’m tired of people killing each other. And honestly, if the 83% of people in the United States who claim to be Christian would actually love the way Jesus has prescribed and choose to be unoffendable, we could change the world!

Unoffendable - Seek Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly
What does it mean to take offense? If you look up the definition of the word, offended, you will see most dictionaries say something about anger and resentment. As we get in to this, you may be thinking, like me, aren’t we allowed to be angry? What about righteous anger? Aren’t Christians supposed to be angry at people for certain things? We will talk about all these things and more through this series. Today we are going to consider being unoffendible towards injustice. Choosing to be unoffendible does not mean accepting injustice, it means “Actively seeking justice and loving mercy, while walking humbly with God.” Let’s take some time today and ask God to help us love justice, but wait on him. To learn to trust that God is going to take care of everything, including the injustices we see and maybe to help us not to lose our cool and pretend our anger is righteous.

Unoffendable - Take Out the Trash
What does it mean to take offense? If you look up the definition of the word, offended, you will see most dictionaries say something about anger and resentment. As we get in to this, you may be thinking, like me, aren’t we allowed to be angry? What about righteous anger? Aren’t Christians supposed to be angry at people for certain things? We will talk about all these things and more through this series. Today, Jesus is offering us peace. You know, when I let go of my anger, I can actually be in the moment with my wife and kids. I can just be present. I don’t have to carry the weight of judgment or condemnation. Jesus wants to “release us from the constant evaluation, never-ending striving, and relentless assessment of where we, and everyone else, stand” (Hansen 91).

Unoffendable - I Can't Believe It
What does it mean to take offense? If you look up the definition of the word, offended, you will see most dictionaries say something about anger and resentment. As we get in to this, you may be thinking, like me, aren’t we allowed to be angry? What about righteous anger? Aren’t Christians supposed to be angry at people for certain things? We will talk about all these things and more through this series. I used to think it was our duty as Christians to take offense, I’m beginning to think maybe we should be the most unoffendable group of people on the planet. At the heart of it, if we forfeit our right to anger, then we deny ourselves and when that happens, our focus shifts to others.

Better Together - Community
One thing we’ve realized, and probably everyone knows, it takes a village. What I mean is that the body operates in service together. God has given each of us gifts, Jesus has assigned various roles to us, and we all play our part in the body. In fact, one of our covenants of membership is to actively be involved in service. We believe it is important to become actively involved in a ministry of this church body. This is one of the ways we are able to love like Jesus so that lives are changed. It is the people of the ekklesia (church body) who make ministry happen. I think we all know it’s important to volunteer service at the church. Today we are addressing what happens when you serve.

Cancelled - They Couldn't Cancel Jesus
This idea of canceling each other has been going on for a long time. People want to cancel God, students want to cancel teachers. If we don’t like something that ketchup stands for, cancelled. Did that person offend you? Cancelled. Going even further back, they didn’t like that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the grave (John 11:38-44) so they wanted to kill him (John 12:10). The ultimate came when they tried, and failed, to cancel Jesus! Since we just came through Easter, it might be good to talk about what happened after Easter. Even the disciples believed that Jesus was dead, that he was cancelled. Perhaps the greatest illustration of this was Thomas.

Easter 2021 - What's in a Cross?
If we are to sum up the message of Easter, it is so much more than the fact that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He did, indeed die for our sins, but that is not all. His death and resurrection started something new. It was the death of the old. When we say yes to Jesus, we enter in to a new way of life. One in which he is the source, the strength, the example, and the assurance.

Lent 2021 - It's an Upside Down World
The season of Lent is a time to evaluate our relationship with God as we prepare for Easter, Jesus' resurrection. It is a time to repent and turn back to Him. Today we are going to look at Palm Sunday and how the Kingdom of God is really an upside down world from the earthly cultural reality. In our world, the weak are trampled, the humble are made fun of, it’s opposite of a Kingdom reality.

Lent 2021 - Who's Pulling Your Strings
The season of Lent is a time to evaluate our relationship with God as we prepare for Easter, Jesus' resurrection. It is a time to repent and turn back to Him. Today we are going to ask the question, "Who is pulling your strings?" In our scripture today, Paul talks about the two different mind sets we might have. One is a mind controlled by our flesh...our desires. The other is a mind controlled by Holy Spirit. That leaves us with the question, is our mind focused on what we want? Or what He wants?

Lent 2021 - The Foolishness of the Cross
The season of Lent is a time to evaluate our relationship with God as we prepare for Easter, Jesus' resurrection. It is a time to repent and turn back to Him. Today we are going to talk about the idea that the cross is foolishness to so many people, For us, it is our salvation. There may be a lot of things that we don’t understand, but remember God accomplished that which was impossible when He went to the cross and died for our sins. He did for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Movement - Welcome Home
When you think of any movement throughout history, what do you imagine the people of that movement were like? We are discovering that there are certain things people of this Kingdom movement have in common. If our church is going to be a movement, we must be Kingdom minded, joyful, sanctified, praying and bold. Today we wrap up this series by recognizing we must be a welcoming people!

What is a movement? I see people starting movements, or trying to, all the time. As I’ve studied, prayed, and thought about this series of messages, I thought God wanted us to “start” a movement. I guess in a sense, that’s still true, but also this is a movement that started over 2000 years ago. This series is going to give us the foundation of what people of Jesus’ movement look like. Today we will look at what being a praying people is all about.

A Look Back...Pressing Forward
Every year, we take a look back at what we have gone through as a church and then turn our sights towards the future. It’s necessary to do that because as we go through something, we aren’t as aware of any changes that might be going on. Hold on because 2020 was a one of a kind year!

Mary's Magnificat (Advent 4)
Just before the birth of Jesus there was a sense of expectation and hope. People were waiting and wondering. They felt like something wonderful was about to happen. The Scriptures had promised the coming of the Messiah, and rumors were rampant that he was coming at any time. He was going to turn the world around and deliver Israel from all her enemies. He would usher in the kingdom of God. But if those same people, who were so high with expectation, had gone to a backyard stable in the town of Bethlehem one starry night, they might have said, “That’s it? All that hype for this?” But actually, in this case, the reality was greater than the expectation. No one could have guessed how this child would change the world. No one could have imagined the impact he would have on world history and the change he would make in people’s lives. Not even Mary fully understood the difference the child she was carrying would make.

Sanctified Gift (Advent 3)
During this time of advent, We are preparing for the return of Christ as well as celebrating the first time that he came as a baby. As we go through the Advent season each year, what is it that we are doing to get prepared? Paul admonishes us that we be kept blameless at the coming of Jesus. The way we do that is by being sanctified…that is allowing God to purify our hearts.

Christmas Preparation (Advent 2)
When you hear “Christmas Preparation” what do you think? It probably suggests going up to the attic, pulling down the decorations, putting up a tree, putting lights on the house, wrapping gifts, etc. How about baking cakes and cookies, a honey ham, smoking a turkey, etc. It seems like we all have a thousand things to do to get ready for Christmas, but is this the kind of preparation that Advent points us towards?

Excited Expectation (Advent 1)
What I love about Advent is that it is a time of expectation, anticipation, and preparation for celebrating... -The fact that Jesus came to this world 2,000 years ago... -That Jesus has come into the hearts of those who believe, causing us to be new creations... -That Jesus will come back again and usher in God’s kingdom in all it’s fullness! In celebrating Advent, we need to remember that we are not only celebrating Jesus first entrance into this world, we are also looking forward in anticipation for his return!

Slaying Giants
We all have things we perceive as giants in our lives. Let’s let go of those things, defeat them, and get on with our lives. Can you imagine David, the little teenage boy, facing this monster? He did it with the help of God, just like we can defeat the monsters in our lives with God’s help.

Freedom is Here
Our society loves freedom. Exalts it to the be all and end all. Free country. Freedom of religion, freedom to vote, freedom to work anywhere that will take you, freedom to choose to eat or not eat genetically modified food, freedom to choose what kind of car you drive, freedom to choose the store you buy your clothes in, in fact in our society the ultimate punishment is the depravation of freedom through imprisonment. When we talk to others about the gospel of Jesus, we need to do it in a way they will understand. Why not talk about the freedom that is found in Christ!?

Love is a Verb (6) Immigrant Justice
I don’t want to talk about politics or economics or sociology, etc. What I hope to accomplish through this series is shed some light on Biblical justice. Today we are going to look at the call to provide justice for the marginalized. People in society are marginalized for a variety of reasons. Maybe a group we don't often consider are immigrants. Throughout the Bible, we are cautioned to welcome the immigrants. What does that mean, though, in today's hyper-political climate?

Summer of Love (14) Loving Practice
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus unless we show them. We have discovered that love is the core of holiness, but what does that mean for the Christian? Today we're going to wrap up our Summer of Love and look at how God's love is perfected in us when we love each other.

Summer of Love (13) - The Love of the Trinity
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus unless we show them. We have discovered that love is the core of holiness, but what exactly is love? If we are to say that God is love, we need to say what kind of love that is. Jesus’ life and death demonstrates or reveals God’s love to us. Jesus reveals God’s essential character and being.

Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus unless we show them. Love is muti-faceted, but at its heart is promoting the well being of others.

Summer of Love (11) Looking for the Core
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus unless we show them. Today we are going to take a look at holiness and how love influences it. What does holiness mean? How do we define it? Is it purity? is it being set apart? Perhaps these are contributing notions of what holiness is and there is something deeper that we can identify as the core. I submit today that love is the core of holiness.

Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus unless we show them. Summer of Love (9) Love Does
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus? It's how we love each other that let's them see the love of Jesus. How can we do that, though? 1 Corinthians 13 is often referred to as the "Love Chapter." In this section of scripture, Paul gives us some very specific praxis of love.

Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus? It’s how we love each other. In all this talk of love, what are the ways we can show God that we love him? Luckily for us, he has told us exactly how we can do that. Summer of Love (6) - Set Free by Love
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus? It’s how we love each other. Do we love each other deeply. Do we honor others above ourselves. To love like this is world changing. It's paradigm shifting. It's the way God loves us and he wants everyone to know! Remember that when we have sin in our lives, we are slaves to that sin. God wants to free you, because he loves you! If you will allow him to, God will set you free today!

Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus? It’s how we love each other. Do we love each other deeply. Do we honor others above ourselves. To love like this is world changing. It's paradigm shifting. By the world’s standards it's certifiably crazy, or at least weak. When we begin to put some meat to the idea of loving like Jesus, all the sudden it’s less cozy and more radical. It’s uncommon…

Summer of Love (4) - Non-Hypocritical Love
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. How are people going to know the love of Jesus? It’s how we love each other. Do we love each other deeply. Do we honor others above ourselves. I think this…again…is what is needed to fix what’s going on in society. If we honored others above ourselves, there wouldn’t be bickering or fighting. Can you see how this love is so unique? It’s uncommon…

Summer of Love (3) - This is Love
Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. So important, in fact, that Jesus made it a new command. On the surface, it doesn't seem like much, but it actually changed everything. Do we "agapeo" Jesus? This is the question Jesus asked Peter on the shore of the lake that glorious morning. If we do, Jesus says, we will feed his sheep.

Love, simply put, is the most important thing in our Christian walk. So important, in fact, that Jesus made it a new command. On the surface, it doesn't seem like much, but it actually changed everything. Where there used to be a bunch of rules, now there is love. Will we love like Jesus did?

Summer of Love (1) - The Love of God
The world around us seems to be burning down. If you ask me what the answer is, it’s love. But not any love. The love of Jesus. Love that denies self. Love that seeks the best for others. We must rise above the fray, put our personal opinions aside, and love people. Remember, we are not part of the kingdom of the world, we are part of the Kingdom of Heaven.
