We know what you’re thinking- what the hell is “Matcha Rules?" Indeed, The Bones Brigade Audio Show has not been shy about shining light onto some of the more obscure and unknown videos from the farthest corners of the ‘Brigade universe- but this one might just take the cake. What we have here, friends, is a half hour long, professionally produced, stacked and soundtracked 1999 Powell Skateboards Japan tour video featuring Steve Caballero, Jon Comer and Moses Itkonen… that no one has ever heard of. You won’t find it in a Google search. It’s not online. The aforementioned skaters that were in it have never heard of it. How it came to be made, printed, and immediately relegated to absolute obscurity- even in the age of the internet- is a complete mystery. However, as always, the BBAS crew- with the assistance of this episode’s special returning guest, legendary skate sleuth Bobby Puleo- are here to help unravel it all. Part by part, park by park and trick by trick, we get into the weeds and deliver you the VHS goods. Roads? For this episode of The Bones Brigade Audio Show, we don’t need roads. This week, the BBAS crew invite you to travel back in time to 1985 for the most complete and painstaking Back to the Future skateboarding retrospective ever assembled in one place! For many, this film- however unintentionally- marked the jumping off point, when skating entered the mainstream collective consciousness of legions of action-starved kids around the globe and helped kickstart the mid-80’s skate boom to follow. Joining us on our trip are three incredible guests: Jerry Madrid, owner of Madrid Skateboards, to discuss the origins of Marty McFly’s infamous Valterra/Madrid collaboration; Bob Schmelzer, Circle-A founder and pro freestyler who doubled for original BTTF leading man Eric Stoltz; and legendary Powell Peralta pro Per Welinder, who not only stepped into Michael J. Fox’s skate shoes for the refilming, but also managed to find himself sitting in a car careening toward the back of a famous manure truck for one of the movie’s most memorable scenes. We dig into the history, the filming, the stories, the culture, the graphics, and everything in between- so get that DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour and join us, shall you?

Welcome back to the show! For this- our eleventh installment of the Intelligence Report series- we are honored to be joined in the studio by the legendary Sophie Bourgeois! Aside from being known far and wide in the Bones Brigade universe for her short but memorable interview and freestyle segment alongside Anita Tessensohn and Lori Rigsby in 1988’s Public Domain, Sophie has a long and fascinating tale that is deeply rooted in skateboarding history. From her early days as one of Canada’s top female skateboarders in the late 1970’s to championship wins, meeting Kevin Harris, moving to the US, her two-year relationship with Rodney Mullen, filming with Stacy Peralta, injuries, comebacks, and the eventual bowing out for a career in academics and aviation- we cover it all and then some. “Powell magic”- a topic of much discussion here at the BBAS from the very beginning. Faithful listeners have endured countless tales of spliced-in sound effects, bails cut into makes, Frankie Hill’s famous “foot POV” handrail, Robert Kittila’s experimental camera creations… the list of Powell’s magic moments goes on and on. Yet, there’s one considerably important bit of Powell Magic yet to be delved into- the 1998 video of the same name! Yes, Brigadiers, today we’ll be digging deep into Bones Brigade video 16- or so it’s labeled- and joining us for the adventure is none other than legendary Powell pro, global skateboarding ambassador and 23-time X Games medalist, Andy Macdonald! We go part-by-part with Andy through this late-nineties time capsule to get the inside information on the team, the tricks, the tours, the trampolines and the times that you have come to expect from The Bones Brigade Audio Show. Much like Chaos and 8 before it, Strip Mall Heroes is a tale of a video in two forms: the officially-released version, and the lesser-known “rough cut” that was hastily shelved following the surprise departures of Mike Vallely, Stacy Lowery and Charlie Wilkins from the team prior to its release (never seen or heard of this version? This contest was his brainchild, so naturally we picked that brain clean to get you all the deepest details on the ins and outs of this towering achievement in the annals of skate contest history. Clyde joined us in the BBAS studio to go over each of these relatively rare video parts- all very different in their own right, from Cab’s mini-documentary to Santarossa’s mini-movie- with the usual fine-toothed comb. Back in the olden days, when new skate videos were a once or twice a year affair, this Stacy Peralta and Craig Stecyk-masterminded basic cable opus acted as a much-needed lifeline of fresh viewing content for the seven ply-starved youth of America. Hosted by the one and only Skatemaster Tate and a young Matthew Lynn (who, as Matthew Lillard, would go on to an esteemed Hollywood acting career), SK8-TV lasted but a single season, yet left an undeniable mark on the world of skateboarding for an entire generation. To kick us off on our adventure, we are welcoming to the BBAS studio, Mark Hunt; a lynchpin of the SK8-TV operation from its inception that acted in multiple integral roles including Producer, Filmer, Editor, Show Advisor, and everything in between. Mark was kind enough to give us (and you!) the entire behind-the-scenes rundown on the show, from beginning to middle to end. In addition to shooting and editing for Powell classics such as Public Domain, Ban This, Propaganda and more, Robert was a true innovator; designing and fabricating a number of unique filming devices that would take the art of skateboard filmmaking to new and previously-unseen levels. This episode is packed to the brim with incredible stories, from Lance Mountain’s bulldog attack to Frankie Hill’s massive gap ollie and everything in between.
