Diversos Caminos lead to Educación

Hola, hola!

This week we are back with Ms. Marisol Santana, also known as @salsamari on Tik Tok! Marisol is currently a dual language teacher who shares many resources geared toward dual language teachers on Tik Tok. However, the road to education was not a straight shot. She was born and raised in New York with a mom from Puerto Rico and a father who is a Jew from NY of Ashkenazi descent. She learned Spanish from her mother, who ensured that she learned the language through child care and other family members. She also got her Spanish name from her mom, which has allowed her to learn how hard it was to maintain that in a world of English speakers. In 2019, Marisol was diagnosed with Breast cancer and is now cancer free! Yet she wants to remind everyone to get their cancer screenings as it saves lives!

She has taught many grades from Pre-K to fourth, and she expresses how each one of them is special in their own way. In this episode, Rita talks about her experiences growing up and how her life path led her to education. She came to the United States when she was a bit older, and faced some challenges in the school system, as well as culture shock, upon arrival. Despite this, she decided to dive into bilingual education to help students who may face challenges as she did while she was growing up.

Adding Fuel to the Fire: aumentando el fuego y poder dentro de estudiantes

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak with Elizabeth Ramos, an ELA teacher in Florida. Elizabeth was born and raised in NYC to Dominican immigrants. She is an Afro Latina who believes in education in academics, cultural awareness, emotional intelligence , and ethics as tools to excel in life. She also is a parent, and tries to instill these values to her children and her students.

Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. Elizabeth’s work aligns with LatinXChange because she is constantly creating a safe space for her students to share their opinions as well as question each other. She is creating an environment where students can research and learn from one another, as well as how to be better human beings. Latinx students are typically taught in spaces that are not relevant to their backgrounds and therefore feel the need to stay quiet. Elizabeth encourages the opposite. Students are encouraged to speak up and speak out for what they believe in.
