Instagram: the O.G. photo-sharing social media platform. It was once so beloved by artists, photographers, and day-to-day photo sharers. But now, is it still considered the best social media platform for artists? We are going to dive deep into whether or not that is still the case, or if artists (and other creatives) should be turning towards other platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, or maybe even the app that’s once again in the spotlight—Vero.

Figuring out which place to share your creations and content with the world can be challenging. So in today’s episode, we are going to compare a handful of the options that are available.

A few things to consider while listening as well as when you are making platform decisions:

• Determining which platform to invest time in, depends on a number of factors.
• What is your purpose for being on the app?
• Where is your community or audience?
• Which apps do you enjoy being on and are willing to invest time in?
• Which app plays to your strengths?

I’ve been quiet on social media lately but I have been working on something really important - making art fun again! The studio has had a makeover, new art supplies have been ordered and ALL my sketchbooks are out!! Plus, Richie and I have been having some BIG ol' chats about the future direction of the podcast and art biz in general.

Over the past few months, I have been exploring different ways to reduce stress and tension in my daily life. I’ve tried meditation, journaling, reading, yoga, walking, reducing caffeine and more. Shifting the focus of my health journey from losing weight to relieving stress has had some surprising benefits.

This isn’t really an art-based episode and I actually stressed a bit about that (oops, still learning). I know that art and life are linked but sometimes I still feel the pressure to stay in a particular lane.

Having said that, one thing I know is that being an artist, business owner and spending a lot of time online increases your health risks. This week is the last interview in the 'Redefining Success Series' and I am chatting with UK artist Angela Terris!

Angela shares the story of how she moved away from digital art and embraced her childhood dream of becoming a fine artist. The conversation includes wonderful tips for loosening up, making art regularly and finding your own style.

We also chat about the discipline it takes to run your own art business and why it is so important to consider if it is really what you want.

Angela tells it exactly as it is and combines humour with practical advice. There are plenty of laughs and the word crikey seems to come up a lot!

Creativity requires risk. It’s a given. There are times when things are going to feel scary. But on the other side of scary, you’ll find GROWTH and CONFIDENCE.

My guest today is UK artist, Emmeline Webb. These days, Emmeline works full-time in her studio making vibrant mixed media artworks while her daughter, Maisie, runs her art gallery in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

Getting to this point has been quite a journey. A journey that has involved selling the family home, starting a gallery just as the UK was coming out of a recession and completely revamping that gallery during the pandemic.

Stefanie Stark didn’t start creating until later in life, after years and years of wanting to paint. Once she started there was no turning back. It wasn’t long before Stefanie was exhibiting her work in shows, galleries and art fairs across the US and even internationally.

In this episode, Stefanie talks about dealing with art rejection, making bad paintings and letting go of the pressure to stick with one style.

This includes a really interesting segment around taking online classes and how sometimes it can be challenging to process what you have learned and put your own stamp on it.

In this week’s podcast, my guest, Simone Linehan, talks about letting go of people-pleasing and embracing her love of quirky faces even though they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

We also talk about Sim’s long and wonderful career. From working in graphic design for thirty years to the soulful art classes she now runs for women in her backyard studio.

When Kiala Givehand launched her first online poetry course, one student signed up. While it wasn’t the result she was hoping for, the relationship she built with that student shaped what was to come.

Since then, Kiala has created over 100 courses and helped women all over the world to find what makes them happy.

Her work is the culmination of many passions including poetry, book-binding, teaching and intuitive painting.

In this episode, Kiala talks about spirituality, being multi-passionate and the importance of nurturing the relationships you already have.

My guest today is Swedish mixed media artist, Jenny Grant. When I reflected back on this conversation, there was one beautiful overarching theme. I can sum it up in one word - FEELINGS!

Leana Fischer discovered her love of painting in 2013 when she left her job as an architect and moved from Virginia to Arkansas. While Leana was in-between jobs she had a bit of time or as Leana calls it ‘white space’. She broke out her watercolour paints and quickly realised that this was what she really wanted to do.

In 2014 she opened her online shop (May We Fly). Little by little, one painting at a time, it slowly became her full-time career.

In this episode, Leana talks about building skills through rigorous practice, creating breakthrough products, setting up multiple income streams and building a small and faithful audience.

I’ve been itching to share this conversation! Today is the first interview in the ‘Redefining Success Series’ and I am chatting with Atlanta-based artist, Christina Kwan.

Christina is well known for her abstract and floral works on paper as well as her large-scale murals. She has recently reached the point where art is her main career.

Running a creative business is a lot like painting, sometimes you have to take things too far to know your limits. This week, Richie and I chat about this and why our 3-week break turned into 3 months. You'll hear our perspectives on burnout as well as the flipside - What happens when you slow down too much and become isolated and disengaged?

We also talk about changes in the art community including the push towards more video content and the pros and cons of raw vs polished video production.

I’ve been taking a lot of comfort from other artists in the community and I wanted to share some of that comfort and support with you.

Sometimes the administration side of being an artist takes over to the point where you don’t feel like much of an artist at all! Too many hours behind the computer screen can leave you feeling tired, exhausted and full of self-doubt.

When this happens something has to give! This week we chat about making painting a priority again. You’ll hear about the new collection I am working on, why I am laying low on social media and what happened when I took a break from my beloved online planner, Trello!

How important is it to be efficient as an artist? That’s the question I posted on Instagram yesterday and today we are unpacking your answers. There’s so much to talk about!

Does efficiency take away from the magic of the process? Is it different for working artists vs. non-working artists? Can taking a break be the most efficient thing you do?

Plus there were so many wonderful tips left on the IG post. Things like: using a stay wet palette, listening to helpful podcasts while painting, putting up a do not disturb sign when working, turning off wi-fi, having your artist bio and portfolio images ready to send when requested and much more!

One thing that did become clear is that there are many different ways to be efficient as an artist and the choices you make will be influenced by your goals and overall vision.

With a bit of creative thinking, even the smallest space can give birth to all kinds of art! Over the years I’ve made art in various corners and spots around the home. Personally, I thought that the kitchen table was very practical. Turns out Richie wasn’t as keen!

Since then I have worked in a converted garage, offsite studio and most recently a loft area in our new home.

As we talk about this journey, I share some of my favourite tips and ideas for getting organised including some handy storage solutions.

In today's podcast, we chat about what it's been like to create our first art challenge and share a few tips and insights from behind the scenes. It hasn't exactly been plain sailing but creative life rarely is. My goodness though, it feels good to push through and be at the stage where we can say that the challenge is live.

So what does it take to run an art challenge? How do you choose a theme? Where is the best place to host it? How long should it be and how do you get the word out? Just a few of the questions we’ll be answering as we chat about our experience so far.

This week on the podcast we are continuing our conversation about sketchbooks! I want to say a big thank you to everyone as we had a huge response to the first part of this sketchbook series. In the first part, we chatted about the mindset side of things and today we are diving into the practical stuff. ⠀

What if my best work gets stuck here? What if I mess up a spread and ruin the whole journal? Why can’t I stick with a theme? It’s taken me eight years to move past these fears and cultivate a sketchbook practice that not only makes me happy but is also beneficial for my art.

This is such a big topic that Richie and I have decided to devote two episodes to it. In today’s episode, I am talking about how I overcame my sketchbook anxiety and next week we’ll dive into the practical stuff including supplies and how to deal with warping, pages sticking together and other sketchbook challenges.

It's not always easy to get back into creative work after a break. You can feel overwhelmed with too many ideas or struggle to even make a mark on the page.

Or as you'll hear about in today's episode, you can plan a big studio day and end up going for breakfast, having a hair cut and doing a bit of shopping!
