lives, the need for effective governance and regulation becomes increasingly crucial. In recent years, both the United States and the European Union have proposed legislative frameworks aimed at addressing the challenges posed by AI technologies. The US Algorithmic Accountability Act (AAA) and the EU AI Act are two key pieces of legislation that seek to establish a regulatory landscape for AI on both sides of the Atlantic.

At the time I write this, none of it has been enacted into law yet. However, it is very possible that the EU AI Act will become effective in 2021, and the US will likely follow suit afterwards.

In this article, we will delve into the similarities and differences between these two proposals, exploring what they can teach us about the future direction of AI regulation. So, let’s dive in and see how these two giants are shaping the world of AI governance.

The Legal Frontier of Artificial Intelligence: Balancing Progress and Regulation

The Legal Frontier of Artificial Intelligence: Balancing Progress and Regulation

A recent Forbes article highlighted the disruptive impact of AI on established companies like IBM and Chegg. The article reported that IBM's AI-powered Project Debater, which can analyze and synthesize vast amounts of data to generate coherent arguments, has led to job losses within the company. Similarly, Chegg, an online education platform, has seen a decline in demand for its human tutors as AI-driven tutoring services gain popularity.

These examples demonstrate the transformative power of AI and its potential to displace human workers across various industries. While AI can undoubtedly bring about increased efficiency and productivity, it also raises pressing legal questions regarding employment rights, data protection, and intellectual property.

The Italian Showdown: What’s Next for ChatGPT and AI Regulation

Italy has launched an inquiry into the privacy policies of ChatGPT. This might read as a 'ban' in the headlines, but legally speaking, it's just one step in a long process of investigating the potential ramifications of this technology. Soon, other countries and regions are likely to look into the matter too, creating quite a stir about its effects.
This morning, I posted a Medium piece that touched upon some of the legal issues we may encounter with ChatGPT. However, the most important part of the article reflects on regulatory issues that have arisen over the past 500 years. From these instances, I draw conclusions on how to address current concerns and prevent an AI Wild West.

Do We Need to Teach Our Artificial Intelligence How to Feel Regret?

Do We Need to Teach Our Artificial Intelligence How to Feel Regret?

I read a lot of examples about AI harassing it‘s users lately - from deeming them stupid to acting racist or even sexually harassing them. For the human users, this might have deep consequences on the way they feel or approach AI in the future. Imagine being harassed by a program - would you use it again? And what would you think about it if your loved ones were harassed? Would you still recommend such a program? For the AI, which has no feelings, this of course remains without any consequences. The software won‘t care if you come back or not, if you recommend it or not. So in a way, for the software, these actions might not have consequences, as it seems they are just a result of its programming.

But what if we could change that, I wonder? And some articles and greater thinkers than me have discussed this already, but nonetheless I want to share my thoughts as well. Should we teach AI how to regret it‘s actions?

EP. 61: Security and Sustainability: Examining the Benefits of PoS-based Blockchain Networks

EP. 61: Security and Sustainability: Examining the Benefits of PoS-based Blockchain Networks

Tomorrow I'm joining the online conference of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The topic of the conference is the intersection of blockchain and sustainability. Far too often this discussion is reduced to the impact blockchain technology has on energy consumption and how it can reduce our carbon footprint, while this is an important point, it is only one of the facets of a much bigger discussion. In my newest article posted on my LinkedIn, I explore the energy efficiency of blockchain technology, comparing the two main consensus mechanisms, Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS). The PoS is much more energy efficient and less costly than PoW, making it an ideal option for developing blockchain technology. However, this does not mean that the sustainability discussion can be reduced to energy consumption alone. Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize many industries, from finance to public administration and beyond. As blockchain technology is adopted by more and more businesses and organizations, a key question remains - how can we ensure that it is used in a sustainable way?
