Getting into 2023 | Mental Health with Odion Welch
We thought we needed to bring Odion Welch on our very first show to discuss how to get mentally ready for 2023.
Who is Odion Welch?
Odion Welch is the best-selling author of ‘Breakthrough.’ She was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, into an immigrant family with her mother, who single-handily raised her and her brother while dealing with personal loss and financial instability. Suffering from depression and anxiety all her life inspired her to share her story. Designed to help everyone break through personal struggles, see that we are not alone, deal with mental illness and fight the stigma that comes with it. Odion came from poverty, fear, financial disaster, and negative relationships knowing nothing but depression to inspire us with her impression.
Working with others to make herself and give them a household name. She works to empower women to overcome the struggles we are all going through, whether it be family, finance, or connections. Odion is a driven, successful entrepreneur with a passion for awareness and practical activities toward mental health. When she is not advocating for mental health or utilizing her recruitment designation, she can be found curled up on her couch watching Disney movies in her white, fluffy unicorn onesie.

Author Liyu Makonnen joined us to talk about raising an autistic child. She is also the author of the book: My Voice, My Life, My Story: Mighty Explorer.
For some of us, our first introduction to autism was when St. Albert RCMP arrested a nonverbal autistic child.
The distress that a child would have gone through has broken many hearts. The child could have been my son, nephew, cousin etc.
In 2023, LCCMedia will be doing a lot of work around getting BIPOC to understand how special autistic children are.
We discussed the need for another children's book and why her book was different. We spoke about coping with an autistic child. How she protects her child?

Is my fibroid cancerous? A chat with Dr. Florence Akindele
Dr.Akindele took some time to answer questions on fibroids: Is it cancerous? Will it kill? How do you cure it? Do natural herbs work? Should we talk about female health? What part of our health is taboo to talk about?
Dr. Florence Akindele has 30 years of experience as a doctor and 20 years as an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist.
She also holds a Master's degree in Public Health and has worked in various aspects of women's health in Nigeria, Swaziland, South Africa, and now Alberta, Canada.
She is a loving mother of four and grandmother of six.

The idea behind AretoLabs began when Machin worked for a city counsellor and noticed the amount of toxicity aimed at female politicians on Twitter. A response to that is PartyBot.

A Sweet Conversation with the Three Bunny Sisters
In 2021, Raveena and Diya Duggal were both awarded the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers for their ongoing contributions. Raveena (age 15), Diya (age 12), and Amisha (age 8) have been involved in several charity initiatives through worldwide organizations.
They have done charity work for the Women’s Interval Home, the Cancer Society, and Plan International, to name a few. Raveena and Diya are also recipients of the UK 2019 Princess Diana Award, which honours “young people who work to improve the lives of others,” and also won the 2018 Mayor's Award, as well as being honoured by politicians.
They joined Tee Adeyemo to talk about their book the Bunny Sister and their passion for humanitarian work.

Conversation with Tope Akindele and Curator Alexis Marie Chute
He showcases his photography at the Multicultural Heritage Centre on the 9th June from 6 pm – 9 pm.
The exhibition is themed Light in Darkness and it is a collection of some his most powerful shots as a photographer during the pandemic.
“The exhibits will showcase some of the fine art photography created during the pandemic. Light In Darkness is a collection of work that invites us to examine life’s journey as extremes on a continuum of sameness”. “It examines the contradictions and often tensions that arise from our experiences of love, laughter, trauma, inequity and the pandemic”.

A Conversation with Honourable Minister Marci Ien
The Honourable Marci Ien has served as Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre since October 2020.
Minister Ien is a devoted community leader and a passionate advocate for vulnerable communities in Canada and around the world. Prior to being elected to the House of Commons, she had an award-winning career in journalism and television that spanned three decades. She has travelled internationally with Journalists for Human Rights and World Vision.
Minister Ien has worked as a mentor with underprivileged youth with Trust 15, an afterschool program based in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, and in La Loche, Saskatchewan, following the shooting at Dene High School in 2016. She has also supported students from these communities by co-founding a new scholarship at the RTA School of Media at Ryerson University. A graduate of Ryerson, she later returned to the university as a distinguished visiting professor and served on its Board of Governors.
In October 2020, just a day after being elected to Parliament, Minister Ien released her first book, Off Script: Living Out Loud, in which she shares personal milestones, tales of resilience and kindness, dramatic moments from her career as a journalist, and insights from the many unforgettable people she has met and interviewed.
Minister Ien was born and raised in Toronto, where she lives with her children Blaize and Dash.Minister Ien is the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth.

Emily Kimani is a fifth-year student in the Faculty of Science specializing in immunology and infection. She serves as the 2021-22 University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) Vice President of Operations and Finance.

Greg Frankson A. Gregory (Greg) Frankson, OCT, B.Ed. is the founder and CEO of Voice Share Inc., which provides training, presentation, coaching/mentorship, and consulting services focused on transformative organizational change through inclusive leadership and effective communication. Prior to creating Voice Share in 2018, Greg was a teacher, arts educator, event producer, corporate trainer, and anti-discrimination facilitator. Throughout his career, Greg has used his voice to create social change as an advocate, award-winning literary artist, and media commentator. Artistically, he published four poetry collections, contributed to three anthologies, edited AfriCANthology: Perspectives of Black Canadian Poets (2022), and released four studio audio recordings, among many other achievements.
Tomi Ajele is the Editor-In-Chief at Afros In Tha City – a media collective dedicated to amplifying Black voices in Mohkínstsis/Calgary. Her work has also been published in The Huffington Post, CBC, ByBlacks, Avenue Magazine, and The Sprawl. Tomi is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy and hopes to continue to use her voice to advocate for an anti-oppressive tomorrow.
Adora Nwofor aka Statuesse Adora Nwofor aka Statuesse is your typical everyday awkward Amazon Goddess next door. She leads with grace and humour even when not intended. Comedian and host, she is all well rounded and a 2020 Calgary Herald Compelling Calgarian making an impact on Turtle Island. From co-producing and styling community content with Shaw Cable, hosting events like Folkfest, Cariwest, and Reggaefest, to making folx jaws drop with comedy at Nubian Disciples, your local Comedy Club. or Gogo Battles, she isn’t afraid to tell THE edgy story you needed. A people lover, getting a look into new communities is her newest adventure, Living a creative life on Youtube tells how people have continued to express themselves despite a pandemic. That’s not all; there’s also public speaking (at U of C, Mount Royal, and Capilano University in the past year), activism (you saw 2020 but she has been on it), wardrobe styling, and modelling in the YYC, all like she’s having a party. Maybe she IS the party!
MODERATED BY: Robert Tyndale (Bobby T) Robert “bobby.t” Tyndale is a digital marketer that believes that people connect through stories. Robert runs a small content production agency called Version Me Media, working with different businesses across Edmonton. He spends his downtime working his Youtube channel and podcast interviewing, reflecting, and talking about things he finds interesting. Focused on engaging the Black community, Robert is a co-founder of a local Black publication Melanistic Magazine and a board member of the Federation of Black Canadians and Jamaican Association of Northern Alberta. Seeing a gap in the social space, Robert started a new tech startup called Return on Colour – focusing on interconnecting Black Canadians across the country through a directory highlighting Black professionals, organizations, businesses, freelancers, and organizations.

Conversation with CEO Akinkunmi John
Mr. Akinkunmi John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Ibadan and an MBA from the Business School, Netherlands (with distinction in dissertation). In the course of service in the private sector, he underwent several trainings and certification courses in Management, Leadership and Marketing. He is a professional in Marketing and Management with experience spanning several years in Commercial Banking and Credit Analysis in the banking industry.

Goldbridge Foods Limited is the promoter of food products under the brand name “Laba”. “Laba” as the name connotes represents originality, freshness, and naturalness. The company’s aim is to minimize the turnaround time in preparing meals, provide foods that are devoid of toxic chemicals and in naturally preserved forms (fresh- close to organic foods), and bridge the gap in the supply of healthy and highly nutritional foods to the Nigerian populaces and other African consumers, as well as provide business and employment opportunities to people. Rochelle Ignacio (she/her) is a safety and inclusion specialist who is passionate about equity, diversity and inclusion. She has a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology from the University of Alberta with a major in Family Ecology and minor in Community Diversity, as well as an Occupational Health and Safety Certificate. She strongly believes in community building, volunteerism, and advocating for underrepresented individuals and groups of people.
Rochelle is the CEO and Founder of Enid Rose Collective which houses her personal portfolio and consultative services. Through Enid Rose Collective Rochelle customizes service offerings to fit the needs of her clients.

A Conversation with Angeline Letourneau
Angeline Marie Letourneau is Ph.D. Student in Environmental Sociology with social media. She is also a speaker at the University of Alberta's International Week. Her talk is titled: Examining the Roots of Climate Change Denial and Reimagining the Tree.
Angeline is a third-year Ph.D. student in Environmental Sociology. Angeline has a background in environmental studies and has extensive work experience in the industry and non-profit organizations in Canada and Germany. These experiences have shaped her ongoing research interests in how gendered identities operate in energy and agri-food systems. Her current thesis explores the interplay between the identities of Albertan oil workers and their resistance to climate change action. Angeline’s other research interests include theoretical understandings and applications of queer ecology and green criminology, social impact assessments, and the relationship between social media and identity. Her work centers on decolonial and intersectional feminist lenses and, she prioritizes social justice in all of her work.
She joined Tee to talk about International Week and how climate change denial affects us all.

A Conversation with Greg Frankson
Gregory (Greg) Frankson, OCT, B.Ed. is the founder and CEO of Voice Share Inc., which provides training, presentation, coaching/mentorship, and consulting services focused on transformative organizational change through inclusive leadership and effective communication. Prior to creating Voice Share in 2018, Greg was a teacher, arts educator, event producer, corporate trainer, and anti-discrimination facilitator.
Throughout his career, Greg has used his voice to create social change as an advocate, award-winning literary artist, and media commentator. Artistically, he published four poetry collections, contributed to three anthologies, edited AfriCANthology: Perspectives of Black Canadian Poets (2022), and released four studio audio recordings, among many other achievements.
He was also an on-air poetic commentator on Here and Now Toronto on CBC Radio One. In the community, his leadership resulted in the overdue commemoration of Robert Sutherland, Canada’s first known university graduate of colour and first Black lawyer, at Queen’s University and across Canada. His words have been published in periodicals and poetry journals on three continents.
Greg is a former Canadian national poetry slam champion, an inaugural inductee to the VERSe Ottawa Hall of Honour, and poet laureate of the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership. He previously served on the boards of Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) and Tropicana Community Services (Toronto), currently serves on the board for Prince’s Trust Canada, and chairs the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Council at the Abilities Centre. Greg has left a lasting impact at his alma mater, Queen’s University, as its first Black student government president, former student senator and ex-officio trustee, and as a long-serving current member of the University Council. He graduated from Queen’s in 1999 with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees, earned concurrently, and holds certificates in Indigenous Awareness and Coaching for Performance and Mentorship.
