46. How To Evaluate Your Ministry

46. How To Evaluate Your Ministry

Podcast Description

Dave and Bo are joined by Jason Clark who is the Student Pastor at Sun Valley Community Church and serves at the Tempe Campus. In this episode we address practical tools and tips to evaluate your ministry. Jason shares two frameworks of evaluation that they use at Sun Valley. At the end Dave walks through 4 areas to evaluate and questions for each area. Be sure to participate in the State of the Youth Workers Survey that you can find in the Show Notes.

Jason Clark Bio

Jason is the Student Pastor at Sun Valley Community Church which is a multisite church in the Phoenix area. Jason has served at the Tempe Campus since 2018. He is married to Becca and they have two boys, Xander and Paxton.

STATE OF YOUTH WORKERS SURVEY

You've probably seen the data from Barna in late 2021 that said 38% of pastors have thought about quitting vocational ministry (and 46% of pastors under 45). Kinnaman has said recently that he expects the latest round of data to be even higher.

LEADStaffing is doing the work to determine the true state of youth workers in 2022, but we need your help. Will you take two minutes to fill out
this survey?

HOW TO EVALUATE YOUR MINISTRY

MYSELF

  • Do I have a healthy spiritual life?
  • How am I managing my time?
  • What is one habit I need to be more effective in?
  • When you are home, how can you be more present with your family?

METHODS

  • Go through each program and ask what is right, wrong, missing, confusing
  • After that discovery, ask what next steps need to be done
  • What is the language you use? Is it insider language or can a visitor or new believer understand next steps?
  • Online ministry? What is it accomplishing? Is it creating community?

PEOPLE

  • Do your small group leaders know what a win is?
  • When evaluating your calendar, how much time is spent investing in leaders?
  • Do your leaders know how to walk through with someone to accept Christ?
  • How many leaders do you currently have? How many do you need?

PROCESSES

  • Does your church use a database? Do you know how to use it to the best of your ability? If not, what do you need to do to learn it better?
  • Is the process to onboard leaders the most effective? Background checks? When they come on to the team, do they know what their role is?
  • What are your measurables to see if you are healthy?
  • How do you communicate with your team - students - parents - leaders? Is this the best way to communicate? Have you asked them?

DISCUSS THIS PROCESS IN YOUR HUDDLE GROUPS

The process lies in discovering our

  • Triggers: the setup that sets us off - What triggers you?
  • Hideouts: where do you go to escape the pain of our story?
  • Insecurities: what false stories do you create about yourself?
  • Narratives: what false stories do you create about others?
  • Grace: the place where we discover how to become whole, holy, and spiritually healthy. Where do you need to experience God's grace?

 32. Transitioning In Youth Ministry

32. Transitioning In Youth Ministry

In this episode Bo and Dave have an important conversation with Dianne DeKoning on transition in ministry. How do you plan for transition from one ministry to the next?  In this episode we will look at how to make a God honoring transition when the time comes. Whether it's a planned transition or a surprise to you, this conversation will help guide you in any situation.

I have been in ministry for 20+ years, in various sized churches in the Minneapolis area. My passion is helping people be the best version of who God created them to be. Through mentoring, coaching, speaking, and pastoral care, I find the greatest joy watching others live into their God-given gifts. I am married to Andrew, and together we are raising three young, vivacious children.

email: deanndra21@gmail.com

Successful Transitions Notes:

  1. Who & when do I tell I’m transitioning
  • Who: create a list of people that should hear from you. Your manager/supervisor should be at the very top. Don’t tell people to not tell, other than your spouse or LEAD222 coach. There are no secrets so tell your manager first. You do not need to give that person a “heads up”. We think that’s polite, but it’s not necessary and creates awkwardness in the event your “next” falls through.
  • When: There is no good time or bad time. There are better times than others. Sometimes this is the end of a ministry season, sometimes not. Once you have a meeting with your supervisor, the ball is rolling to communicate with others. Be prepared.

 2. What should I prepare before I resign?

  • Write your resignation letter. Keep it short, don’t burn bridges with your words.
  • Set up your volunteers for success. Consider “If I wasn’t here, would my volunteers know what to do (lead a game, give a talk, do announcements, etc)?”
  • Copy all electronic files you want to take with you before you hand in your resignation letter.
  • Leave documents accessible, like mission trip plans made to-date.
  • Prepare to leave the day you hand in your resignation letter. They likely won’t walk you to the door, but can move up your last day to that day.
  • Prepare your WHY that you will share, an elevator speech, a concise statement. Don’t think on your feet on this, prepare it. Write it out, memorize it. Everyone hears the same thing from you, and keeps you from saying too much that might not be useful or helpful.
  • Prepare to ask for an exit interview when you turn in your resignation letter.
  • Prepare your heart and be aware of your own emotions. Try not to emotionally or physically disengage. Soon you will be carrying the emotions of others, you need yours in check.
  • Take that list of people who need to know, and consider HOW will they know and from who? This can be done in conjunction with your supervisor, but prepare a draft.

3. How can I prepare emotionally and spiritually before I announce my departure?

  • What should I prepare before I resign? and ask them to pray for you.
  • Work through your own emotions--journal, pray, see a counselor.
  • Listen to what God is saying to you.
  • Trust that God will catch you, and will care for those you leave behind (students, parents, volunteers)

4. How can I encourage students as I am leaving?

  • Acknowledge their feelings. They are real.
  • Affirm what you know about God-he’s always there for them.
  • Encourage them in their own spiritual walk. Share your hopes for them--that they would keep growing in Christ.

In this episode Bo and Dave have guests who will be speakers at the NLCC on August 18th, 2020.  You will hear a snapshot of what the NLCC will look like and how we are better together through community, encouragement, training and coaching.

NLCC

Our National LEAD222 Coaches Conference has moved to a very interactive Zoom meeting.

$20 includes t-shirt and recordings of all training sessions if registered by August 14.

This is going to be a great time where everyone who is a part of the LEAD222 Coaches Community (ADs, Head Coaches, Coaches and Coaches in Training) from all around the country to come together via Zoom for a day of outstanding training and authentic “Be-With” time. This will not be a sit, watch and listen event. You will be engaged to participate, to discuss and to laugh.

Our time together will include training on best practices and leadership principles that are sure to help you grow as a leader and in Kingdom Impact both in your local context as well as in your coaching through LEAD222! All of our training will be led by well-seasoned practitioners, national leaders and members of our LEAD222 staff team.

We are confident that you will leave this event glad you joined and saying “I’m a better person, a better leader and I’m not alone.”

We plan for this time together to empower you to go into the fall ministry season refreshed, encouraged, equipped and a healthy leader not just in your connection with LEAD222 but in your personal, family and ministry life as well.

See you on Zoom in August!!
