Everything changed in 1913, when land began gushing oil and Rector became the first youngest Black millionaire in American history.

In this discussion, Ma'asehyahu Isra-Ul sits down with Dr. Christina Proenza-Coles to discuss the process and products of history and the development and defense of New World settlements by Black people who "undermined slavery, and championed freedom throughout the hemisphere". Why are terms like "colored man" or "poison book" found in the early writings of the Ahmdiyya decades before they are uncovered in early Nation of Islam writings of the 1930's? Could W.F. Muhammad (Fard Muhammad) actually have been an Indian follower of Ahmadiyya Islam who broke off to create his own stream of Islam for American Blacks? Get your notepads ready. In this episode of Leading By History, Specialist Ma'asehyahu Isra-Ul speaks with historian Menika Dirkson from Temple University's PhD history program. Menika speaks with us about her dissertation research which is focused on street organizations and unjust systems in the city of Philadeplphia. In this part 4 of the Black Gods series, Menika helps us to make the connection between black religious groups whose core ideology of self-sufficiency helped to spawn criminal organizations in the inner city. From the Nation of Islam to the Black Mafia Family to the Moorish Science Temple and the El Rukns (Black P. Stones), black religions have engendered a sense of pride which eventually became corrupted by communities of inequity, injustice and poverty. Don't miss this episode if you struggle to see the connections!

S2 Ep. 9 - The Black Gods Pt. 3

S2 Ep. 9 - The Black Gods Pt. 3

In the previous episode, Specialist Ma'asehyahu Isra-Ul presented the premise that it was Marcus Mosiah Garvey who laid the groundwork for "Black Godism" in America. While there were others who presented themselves as "Gods" in black flesh (i.e. Father Divine), it was Garvey who defined the purpose and need for having a "Black God". In this part III, we delve into the history of the Five-Percenters and the Nubian Nation and how these organizations took Black Godism from the worship of an external deity into the "awakening" of being the embodiment of this deity. Welcome back as we continue this journey into black religion, identity and metaphysical liberation - compliments of  "the Black Gods".

S2 - Ep. 1 - Abraham Lincoln and His Notions of Race 1841-1865 (Feat. Dr. Lucas Morel, W&L University)

In this FIRST EPISODE (extended) of the new season of Leading By History, Dr. Lucas Morel of Washington & Lee University joins us to discuss the legacy of Abraham Lincoln as "Great Emancipator" or "White Supremacist". There has been much debate over the last several decades as to what Abraham Lincoln meant for African-American people and oppressed people world-wide. Some have viewed him as a great man who gave enslaved people in the U.S. their freedom and new opportunity, while others insist that he was not much different than the other white men of his day who promoted the superiority of the white race and cared little for the lives of the enslaved. Listen closely and fully as you weigh in with your own thoughts. This show is a must listen for the students of history and political science. Welcome back!
