S3:E10 - The Importance of Positive Self-Talk w/ ShantaGenerally

In this week’s episode, we are talking about the importance of positive self-talk with special guest Shanta Generally. It’s always easier to say bad things about ourselves than good. Why? Because if we say good things about ourselves, we kind of have to live up to them. If we tell ourselves that we will be successful, that means we have to put in the work to get there. But what if we fail?

I venture to ask, what if we don’t? What if we can speak positivity into existence? That’s what positive self-talk is all about, and Shante and I get deep into it as she shares her own story of how positive words she spoke into herself helped change her outlook.

About Shante

Shante Generally is the host of Authentic Talks 2.0, s podcast about authenticity. She is a Spiritual Mindset Coach, CEO of Authentic You Mindset, CEO of Aym Beyond The Physical Academy and Author of Jamm with Me, A Journey to Your Higher Self a 5 part book series

In this week’s episode I talk about how to lead yourself through change. I share some personal reflections with you on some of the challenges that I’ve had in a season of change and how I was able to help myself through it.

One exercise that I constantly come back to is self-reflection. I have found that this can be one of the most successful ways to see what you are going through and find ways to move forward.

In particular, I use chapter 14 of my book “Our Leadership Journey: Shared Stories, Lessons, and Advice for Women of Color” as a guide in my reflection process.

She shares’ three ways to unlock abundance.

  1. Write the vision
  2. Do the extra
  3. Take the steps

And so much more. She teaches us how to visualize our tomorrow.

Her favorite scripture captures it all.

Habakkuk 2: 2-3

2Then the Lord answered me and said:

“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.

What does abundance mean to you and how are you unlocking it?

S2:E8 - Becoming Your Sister’s Keeper

S2:E8 - Becoming Your Sister’s Keeper

In this episode I talk about being your sister’s keeper, supporting our fellow sister’s of color as they climb the corporate ladder. I share a personal story as well as some tips and advice. Referencing the end of chapter 12 of my book “Our Leadership Journey: Shared Stories Lessons and Advice. I share the three lessons and advice I provide.

·  Lesson 1. Be to others who you would want someone to be for you. Show up for someone, and someone will show up for you.

·  Lesson 2. The only person you should be competing with is yourself. “Nothing that is for you can be taken from you.” -Unknown

·  Lesson 3. Being accountable for your sister helps you be accountable to yourself.

My advice…

There are too many people in the world who are against us, so we need to stop being against each other. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t matter what you do, you will always have detractors. Sometimes those detractors will be your own sister. What you can do is choose not to be a detractor for anyone. Pay it forward, offer your support, lift as you climb, and help other women of color win the way that you are.

How are you being your sister’s keepter?

S2: E7 - Diversifying Your Social Portfolio

In this episode I talk about networks, specifically the value of your network which, is your social capital.

I discuss an article I wrote on idealist careers titled “Networking While Remote| What Professionals of Color Need to do to Stay Connected and Leverage Relationships for Success” where I examine the lack of access we have as people of color in building the right relationships that are valuable and can be a catalyst to our careers success.

We also do a deep dive into exactly what social capital is, getting a return on your investment in networks, and the value of the relationships you have versus the number of people you know.

Share your thoughts on social capital. Have you ever considered the value of your network or the value of the time you invest in them? What kinds of professional relationships to do have? Are they trusting? Do they provide the resources you need to grow professionally?

S2:E6 - Doing You without Losing You

S2:E6 - Doing You without Losing You

In this episode I talk about integrity. As black women, as Women of Color it is a constant battle to stay try to who we are and what we value, when at every turn we are told we need to change. I talk about a quote my mentor always says that has stayed with me that I believe speaks to what integrity is all about.
My mentor says, “You should always do the right thing, not someone’s thing.”

It can be hard some timed to not do someone’s thing when it could mean a raise or a promotion, but if doing that things goes against who you are, against your values, is it the right thing.

I also quote the bible. Specifically, 1 Peter 3:13-17

13 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15 But [a]sanctify [b]the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ash 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”

This scripture reminds me that having integrity is the right thing, and in the end, people can say what they want say about me, and it doesn’t matter because I know in my heart and in the eyes of God, the work I do is good.

Share your thoughts on integrity. Have you ever felt you had to compromise yourself and do someone else’s thing in order to get ahead? How were you able to maintain your integrity? How did it make you feel?

Episode 5: I Am Not Your Superwoman: The Truth Behind Sojourner Syndrome

Episode 5: I Am Not Your Superwoman: The Truth Behind Sojourner Syndrome

In this episode we will be talking about the Sojourner Syndrome or Superwoman Schema as it is better known. We follow the research of Dr. Cheryl L. Woods-Giscombé, RN, Assistant Professor at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and review her paper titled “Superwoman Schema: African American Women’s Views on Stress, Strength, and Health” published in the Qualitative Health Research Journal.

We discuss her five (5) characterizations for the Superwoman Role, and four (4) contextual factors that contribute to the Superwoman Role. You can read the full paper here.

We discuss my suggestions for ways to change our behaviors so that we can live healthier lives and move away from trying to be Superwoman.

Finally, listeners are asked to engage in a bit of self-reflection and answer the following questions and share their stories with me.

  • Are you or have you ever suffered from the Superwoman complex?
  • What have been the implications (mental, physical, emotional) of trying to be Superwoman?
  • Has your upbringing played a role in your perception of having to be Superwoman? How so?
  • What steps can you take to break the habit of trying to do everything and be everyone to the people in your personal and professional life?
