You Guys

You Guys

By Leandra Gillis

Putting out the dumpster fire that is current events, one can at a time.
It’s a fun chat between friends– one that’s newsy, possibly controversial, and relevant. We’re here to discuss what we know and learn from each other.
Journalist Leah Gillis in Paris (frmr NBC, AOL), and lawyer Elura Nanos in New Jersey (OWN series) help you get a handle on our world (yay for passive learning!), and maybe even get you involved (secret agenda alert.) No stodginess, propaganda, pearl-clutching or bullshit. It’s time to break down serious matters in a way that goes down easy.
Because smarter is better.

2:30 Leah and Elura talk “word jewelry” and the pure joy of circumflexes.

6:00 The times they are a-changing, and we mean international zoom divorces and trans-continental zoom weddings.

8:00 French cafés are closing, and the U.S. may be able to learn a thing or two about how to make policy changes. Also, we coin the phrase, “Les-Mizzing out,” and we expect you all to start using it.

11:00 Leah reminds us how we should be more sympathetic to those from challenging places, and we discuss that even in France, people are trying to police women’s clothing choices.

13:00 Cleavage at the Musée d’Orsay? Quel scandal!

14:00-30:00 The story of Em Rata brings up an interesting clash between copyright and privacy laws. Now that Instagram is the new Warhol, who owns images of themselves?

31:00 We bid farewell to RBG, and take a walk back to the VMI case.

42:00 We talk current SCOTUS fuckery, with special focus on Merrick Garland and Amy Coney Barrett. There is some talk about changing SCOTUS for good, so what’s that about?

50:00 Elura thinks Lois Lane is a pain in the ass, and Leah finds this blasphemy.

55:00 Leah reports in from the trenches on how tough it can be to work in the world of journalism. Are stories crushed on purpose? Why is there no interest in publishing an important expose on horrific treatment of Native women?

‪ ‬
‪22:00 We update you on the sitch with qualified immunity because did you know we’ve got cops using lethal force to protect animal shelters from folks trying to drop off stray dogs? Yeah so how does someone end up dead from that?! It’s a WTF alert, indeed, and perhaps relevant to *cough cough* defund *cough cough* the police.‬
‪ ‬
‪40:00 Time for an election fuckery update and a reminder that postal shenanigans are threatening to destroy our democracy. Like red alert time.‬
‪ ‬

1:00-22:00ish You guys, you need to know what’s going on with Britney. As in Spears. This whole #FreeBritney thing is getting intense, and it might be time to hit you baby one more time. We talk about creating and destroying, and you guys, we never thought Britney would be someone we thought this much about.

23:00 Are you guy paying attention to what’s happening in Florida? When we’re talking about voting, there is some serious #FloridaFuckeryAfoot. Floridians changed their constitution to allow ex-convicts to vote, but now, the state is messing with that right in a major way. The governor’s answer? Have the ex-cons commit perjury. What could go wrong?

45:00 You guys, we have to talk a little death. Leah shares her personal story ( Medium link: https://link.medium.com/eq7t8O7iu9), and we talk about how the death of an absent parent is both different and the same as a present one.

60:00 Elura had a revelation this week. It’s about National Parks, Encyclopedia Brittanica, and how the fifth grade can ruin a person’s whole take on hiking.

It’s time. We have to talk about life with COVID, this regime in office and racism. How to handle it all?

Kids and education in the COVID era first.

Elura is a working mom of two facing all the questions and quandries of family life with COVID.
Leah is a journalist in France, observing America’s COVID response from a country (and continent) with national healthcare and a responsive government focused on limiting exposure (what a concept!)

The world is grappling with sending kids back to school right now, and since we love education, and think it needs some retooling anyway, let’s discuss!

Do Americans have a blind spot when it comes to caring for people?

Could we use COVID as an opportunity to bring about greater societal change?

How in the world are families supposed to manage the decision-making for school-age kidsright now?

About ‪15:00‬

COVID has put everyone’s mental health through the ringer right now. Elura and Leah share their coping mechanisms with you. From pickleball to meditation, turning inward to turning outward, seeking calm or seeking action – everyone has their own recipe for stress-relief.

Covid-coping is different in Paris and in New Jersey. You know you wanna know how. Spoiler, start saying “smeyes.” Our resident celestial being, Leah, walks us through some of the wisdom of the stars. And we’re not talking Hollywood. Ends around minute 12 The world is starting to change dramatically as we start to grapple more with racial issues – and the cancelation of TV shows like COPS definitely marks a turning point. And yet, there are still some people (looking at you, Starbucks) slow to the BLM party. Ends around minute 16. Apparently, some of the coronavirus funding is “confidential”? Seems kinda weird. We look a little deeper, and discuss some serious problems with CARES Act money, what are Mnunchin and co doing?! Ends around minute 19. With so much talk about “defunding the police,” it’s time to explain what that means in a way that’s digestible. L&E break it down. Speaking of police, do you know who Ramsey Orta is? Probably not. Well, you should. We’ll catch you up. Ends around minute 47. Apparently anyone can get sex funding, even with no idea how women work - or belief in women’s ability to orgasm. We know. Of course we talk about more, but we want to hear from you! Please send us your story ideas and thoughts on Anchor!
