Quality @ My Good School
My Good School Season 9, Episode 8. Quality is defined as the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something. But why is it important? Tune in to discover the enigma of quality. Join Anvesha and Simar as they are back with a podcast this month. We welcome you to My Good School Show Episode 9, where passion meets education, and it is quality this time. Tune into this fruitful conversation where our friend Arav unfurls his stories. Join us in the celebration of Quality at My Good School and make it even more fun! Paraphrased from The Little Book Of Values by Julie Duckworth Quality • noun (pl. qualities) 1 the degree of excellence of something as measured against other similar things. 2 general distinctions. Three distinctive attributes or characteristics. Children say Quality is: • Working together to get quality work in your books • Making sure you’ve got a great team • Achieving quality can make yourself and others feel good inside • It’s about not giving up on yourself; you need to believe that you can do it • You need quality to care for the world • Your teachers want you to have high standards and quality work. They plan good lessons so you can always do your best • If we think we can, we will do well. We say in our heads and out loud, ‘I can and I will'. Our thoughts need to be of high quality; there is no room for negative words • We need friends of good quality in our lives. The sort of friends who will stand by you when everything is down. Why Humility Matters? - Story of the Titanic
Why Humility Matters? - Story of the Titanic
Nibbrati Rathore, a passionate educator and a #HappyTeachers, is blessed with a beautiful voice and a love for children. She is a mentor, volunteer and teacher at My Good School. This episode is about humility, the value that should be numero uno, successful, and humble. "The low sweet root from which all heavenly virtues shoot,  that's HUMILITY. Humility is the quality of being humble. It is a quality of being humbly respectful of others. It is that self-respect that keeps us away from thinking too highly or too meanly of ourselves. Humility makes us modest and constantly reminds us how far we have come in life and what more we can do. Humility is an important virtue or trait that every person should have. Everyone deserves respect and a word of kindness, which has nothing to do with profession, age or gender". - Humility and Appreciation - Tarang JMMS, Post on www.BrewingKnowledge.com

Teachers Travel With You All Your Life - Anvesha Rana
Teachers Travel With You All Your Life - Anvesha Rana
Anvesha Rana from Gyanshree School reads the chapter Teachers Travel With You All Your Life. Learning is a lifelong process; we must have the best teacher accompany us on life's journey. We may grow up and follow a 'guru' or a mentor; whoever we follow, the teacher's leadership is supreme; the teacher travels with us for life. The empathy and care our teachers bestow on us are etched in our memory for life. You will always carry your teacher in you no matter where you go. The empathy and care our teachers bestow on us will be etched in our memory for life. You will always carry your teacher with you no matter where you go. What Makes Teachers Great? Some characteristics can predict whether a teacher will be a great teacher even before entering the classroom. Studies show the teacher is one of the most crucial factors in your child's school success. A poor teacher can set your child back forever; a great teacher inspires them forever. My Good School - Where Passion Meets Education  A BOOK FOR ANYONE AND EVERYONE ASSOCIATED WITH SCHOOLS AND SCHOOLING. This book is for parents to select the school for their child, as the choice can have a lifelong impact on the growth and personality of the child. A guide for you to look beyond that high-rise building and those perfectly manicured lawns—to go deeper in your search for your good school. It will encourage you to observe, question, evaluate, and choose a school that will truly prepare your child for a life beyond the campus, beyond theory, and beyond algebra. This book will help educators, school administrators, and management build and rebuild such institutions and change the future of learning. Happiness @ My Good School
Happiness @ My Good School
My Good School Season 2, Episode 2 Happiness is perhaps the most multi-faceted feeling. The most fundamental aspiration in the hearts of all human beings is to be happy. We all want to be happy, but we are not! But what is happiness? Happiness is an emotion, a feeling of contentment. The most trivial things can brighten our day, bring us joy and make us happy! May it be good weather, a good grade in an assessment, being able to befriend a stranger, calling a friend or a relative, looking at the stars, playing a sport with someone, listening to music, and the list goes on.  Happiness is not something that we can achieve with myriad materialistic items. True happiness comes from within. If we are not happy where we are, we won't be happy anywhere. Happiness is the first step of the ladder as we climb up to peace, sanguinity, sagacity, and finally, equanimity.  In the words of Albus Dumbledore, "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, only if one remembers to turn on the light!" So join us in unfolding the mystery behind the happiness of human life with Aarav and Rishona. Few of our friends will also join and share their experiences. Tune in to the podcast to listen to Saima, Arindita, Anishka, Sakshi, Kritika and Sunita ma'am talk about the true form of happiness. Let us revisit the cheerful and lively moments filled with joy and laughter!  Comment below and let us know if you liked our podcast. If you want to be a part of similar podcasts, join us. Friendship @ My Good School
Friendship @ My Good School
My Good School Season 2, Episode 1 Somewhere in life, there must be someone to take your hand and share the torrid day. Without a touch of Friendship, there is no life, and we must fade away. In the words of Oprah Winfrey, "Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down". There are friends, there is family, and then there are friends who become family. Friendship is a tonic for all of us that only grows stronger over time; it is the cure for every challenge, the outlook for every good day, and the wish for every person. Probably no relationship is as essential yet versatile as Friendship. The intimacy and affinity we have with our friends are irreplaceable, and it comes in many forms; whether we are next to each other or miles apart, we always remember them, and they are our Friends. To have true friends is a blessing, so join us as Anvesha and Simar share their companionship and the meaning of Friendship. They spill it all, of course, along with some special guests. Discover a companion from the past; revisit those old lanes we had walked upon with mates; laugh out loud as nostalgia envelopes each one of us; follow the tale when a young girl makes an uncanny friend; indulge in the adventures which make our life both troublesome and happening; do recall the bold and notorious friends Jai & Viru and witness the bond between old pals. Some stories will make you smile, some will bring tears to your eyes, some may even make your heart skip a beat, but all of them will renew your faith in the power of Friendship. My Good School Dil Se - The Fabindia School
My Good School Dil Se - The Fabindia School
My Good School Season 1 Episode 1 - 'Dil Se' means from the heart! The seven-part series shares how select schools connect, communicate, collaborate and create an environment where the joy of learning comes to life. In this story of The Fabindia School, find out how the school has successfully built a great relationship with all the stakeholders - Students, Parents, Teachers and Management - to win hearts and create a school that prepares children to face the world. In this show, the Director, Dr Ashok Pandey, has beautifully shared how school culture is built and what makes a good school. The speakers include Rajeshree Shihag (Principal), Aryan Sirvi & Meenakshi Chaudhary (Students), Bharti Rao (Teacher), Pokar Ram Choudhary (Parent), Yogender Mertiya (Trustee - Management representative) and Shelly Jain (Ex-Student). Where Passion Meets Education How is the human element highlighted in the school? Elements that make a school from good to great? What goes into making a good school? How are values taught in school? How do stakeholders work to make it a good school? What is the vision of the promoters? The My Good School Dil Se stories explain how schools can achieve significantly better teaching standards, foster a sense of community, and help students reach their fullest potential. THE FABINDIA SCHOOL The school emphasizes a holistic approach to education, offering extensive extracurricular programs and academic courses. The school was established in 1992 in the village of Bali, Rajasthan, by William and John Bissell, who recognized the need for a model school to empower young people in rural Rajasthan, where literacy rates are meagre, especially among women. After completing his studies in 1988, William Bissell lived for several years in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where he worked with rural artisans and various crafts co-operatives across the state. This formative experience strongly impacted his views on the critical role of education and the lack of high quality, affordable education in rural areas. William was passionate about creative approaches to education which brought out each child's inherent talents and the need to include environmental education in a local context. With input from many creative talents over the years, the school has become a model for preparing its students for success in life while contributing to the local community. Message to the Principal "It was a great pleasure interacting with your team. Your students are brilliant. You are leading a great school. Congratulations. During the show, I wish to focus on some of the very profoundly touching questions."- Dr Ashok Pandey (Director Ahlcon Group of Schools and Host of the My Good School Show). The My Good School curriculum focuses on learning for life; Empower students by creating an environment for their personal and social development; Encourage students to become involved in activities beyond just study; this helps develop confidence, knowledge and networks; and  Experiential learning is a critical factor in the students progressing successfully through adolescence. My Good School standard core curriculum helps empower every individual; we invite schools to join the Good Schools' global community. The 4S School - Service, Skill, Sport and Study. The 'My Good School' designation shows a school's value on professional learning and student achievement.  For more about The Fabindia School www.FabindiaSchool.org. Bharti Rao "I am passionate about Education...
Bharti Rao "I am passionate about Education...
Episode #89: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Bharti Rao, a Passionate English Educator and Vice-Principal at The Fabindia School with 20 years of teaching experience. Alumni of Sophia High School and have taught in girls and co-ed school in Mount Abu. After a break of 12 years and she joined The Fabindia School in 2004. Her motto is 'Where there is a will, there is a way!'. With her strong willpower and confidence, she was determined to find the way out against all odds of culture, family background and the pressing needs of being a homemaker. Her communication and written skills in English are the assets that have taken her a long way in life; good listening skills, being patient, responsible and having a positive attitude. As an educator, she grows her students with dedication and works for children's all-around development. She wants to enhance and teach moral values to make them successful and responsible human beings and create learning spaces. Sending girls to school has historically been a challenge for many cultures and countries; the single most reason for this has been the attitude and understanding of parents, many of who are not yet first generation learners. In her case, her parents offered her tremendous support, and in addition, the male members in the family she got married to all helped her grow her passion for education. Her twelve-year hiatus, being married to a family that was limited in vision due to social norms, she managed to find a form with compassion and caring. Today, she finds that education is transforming households, fathers who are farmers, rural livelihood being their source of sustenance, accompany their girls to admit them to school; this is the significant change her village and India has seen.

Philip Burrett “I am passionate about Education...
Philip Burrett “I am passionate about Education...
Episode #88: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Philip Burrett, an ex-school master and deputy Headmaster at The Doon School, with 43 years of teaching experience. Now a school consultant, trainer, coach, school mentor and traveller. Has taught in co-ed and single-sex boys schools in Delhi and Mumbai till he arrived at The Doon School Dehradun (India) in 1985. He believes that boys end up in trouble; when we look around, we see many reasons. He is very concerned about handling boys and how we can best educate them. His efforts are to move them away from the pseudo masochism that most boys think is needed to become new warriors-men with empathy and kindness. Now retired seeks to take boys into the outdoors to train, coach and mentor. The need of the hour is to help boys become men and make these rites of passage enjoyable. Once a teacher, always a teacher, works to help colleagues and live well with his family. Philip's father served in the forces, and this is where he learnt the meaning of colour, the need to respect women and persevere. His passion for the outdoors must be his DNA, and he finds that learning is only outside the classroom, beyond the closed spaces and boxed mindsets. Finds that boys in particular call for trouble, and the prisons are full of men. This happens because they lack role models. It is time now for 'men empowerment, and this gives due credence to the Mankind Movement he once followed. We can not make half-baked men; there is a definitive need for rituals, routine and rhythm to help reform the world in distress.

My Good School Day - global implications
My Good School Day - global implications
My Good School opened for the world on the 18th of July 2020 with Dr Karl Clauset as the Guest Of Honour, RP Devgan Chairman Learning Forward India, Board Members of Learning Forward, School Heads, Educators and passionate people who love to help schools deliver better.  A tailor-made school experience for every individual. We see the possibility of a nation where every school offers young people the opportunity to be rewarded for challenging themselves, rewarded for engaging with adult mentors, rewarded when finishing school, and rewarded for giving back to their communities. We believe we can help connect young people with new opportunities to change their world. My Good School is a standard common core curriculum, with a focus on the personal and social development of an individual; by offering an environment where experiential learning is made possible through activities beyond just study; this brings to life learning that would otherwise be theoretical and uncoordinated. Encouraging students to become involved in activities in the community outside the confines of the school curriculum will help develop their confidence, knowledge and networks. With teachers’ encouraging young people, they can benefit fully from what both the school and outside interests can offer, this can be a key factor in their progressing successfully through adolescence into a fulfilling and rewarding adult life.

Kavita Anand "I am passionate about Education..
Episode #85: Sandeep Dutt, in conversation with Kavita Anand, Co-founder & Executive Director of Adhyayan, Kavita Anand is catalysing a committed learning community of educators across India to transform the learning of students. For more than three decades as an educator, researcher, funder, school and system leader, and now edupreneur, she would like to ensure a good school for every child. Her school transformation journey started when she worked with college students and set about finding out the challenges for quality in education. Kavita set up Shishuvan and showcased what goes into the making of a good school. Looking at the future and following her passion gave rise to Adhyayan. In the conversation, she tries to explain how we can decode a good school, the framework and policy, and finally establish the impact on learning, driven by data and analytics. When questioned about the visual effect of education, she states that the truth is that an 18-year-old will have forgotten all that they have learnt at school, so best there is the pressing need to make sense of what the child needs.

Abhijit Sinha "I am passionate about Education...
Abhijit Sinha "I am passionate about Education...
Episode #84: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Abhijit Sinha, the creator of Project DEFY, enabling underserved communities to create an education for themselves through self-learning spaces called Nooks. At Nooks, individuals (children and adults) learn what makes them curious and caters to their needs and interests. Nooks are Schools without Teachers, Exams or even any curricula. They are controlled and managed by the learners themselves, who take complete charge of their own learning. Through DEFY, Abhijit has worked with over 17 communities and enabled 7000+ individuals to become self-learners. He has set up Nooks in 3 countries such as India, Uganda, and Rwanda and is now looking at setting up a Nook Hub in Zimbabwe. Abhijit believes that education should bring education back into the learners' hands, and the onus to choose what, when and how they learn should be a decision left to them. Nooks are cost-effective, self-learning environments where the learners design & define education for themselves. A community space that fosters curiosity, innovation, creativity, and critical thinking. A safe space where people from abject poverty, vulnerable communities, at-risk environments can come and create relevant life goals. In this podcast, he reflects on his personal experience and how dissatisfied he was living in the industrial age! Chasing a material life and not living one complete day, he says we need to slow down, think and work to become complete human beings. This is only possible when we live for the present moment and not keep working for the future under the pretext of getting educated. Abhijit doed not want education to be merely a transfer of instruction. Education is a much more interesting process of self-discovery and understanding of local and global surroundings.

Lakshmi Tahiliani Ghosh, MPhil Chemistry, a post-graduate in Education and, an APS-CSB and CTET qualified teacher, TGT Science at Hyderabad for the last 6 years, worked as a lecturer for 2 years, and as a translator, content developer and editor in the Hindi language for 5 years.

Mukesh Shalet "I am passionate about Education...
Mukesh Shalet "I am passionate about Education...
Episode #82: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Mukesh Shalet, an educator and a life long learner. A firm believer in Kaizen he evolved as a teacher by close observation of his peers, school visits and compiling best practices. Long before pedagogical practices like learning styles, Multiple Intelligence, theatre in education & cooperative learning gained currency he used them as a teacher & mentor. He believes that a superior force works through him to impact the lives of students & parents. His interests beyond education include ‘the why theatre’, psychology and the occult sciences. A life long learner Mukesh would like to be reborn as one foe there is so much to learn & a lifetime is not sufficient. He has been a school leader in boarding schools, day schools, coed schools and even today, as the principal of a school, he remains a teacher, as he loves to teach English. His passion for music and theatre offers us a glimpse of his sensitivity, the trust with his inner self and how, as a chief learning leader, he works to empower his teachers and students alike. As for most of us, his parents also played a key role in becoming a teacher; the compassion of his mother and the discipline of the father are both important traits of his character today—a family man who keeps up with the times and believes in values and traditions. In the podcast he shares how the year 2020 helped him and his team take learning forward, a major change from yesteryears, the teachers learnt as much from students who are more agile and savvy with technology. Finally coming to his belief: I believe that God continues to create children since he is not yet tired of the man. I also believe that man is yet to understand the mind of a child; I believe in striving for excellence in everything but also believe that excellence alone is not everything; I believe children must aim for high grades but I also believe that children who score low grades also succeed in life; I believe in grades that help children pass an exam but I also believe in values which see them through life; I believe parents when they tell me that children do not like to study but I also believe in children who tell me parents do not have time for them, and finally he states I believe in destiny but I also believe that we are makers of it.

Ravi Kaimal "I am passionate about Education...
Episode #75: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Ravi Kaimal, has been involved with The Fabindia School since the first brainstorming discussions with John and William Bissell.  Ravi is a professional architect and is responsible for the design of the school buildings. He was also Chairman of Bhadrajun Artisans Trust (BAT), the non-profit, tax-exempt charitable society founded by William Bissell which established the school in 1992 and continues to help guide the school and provide financial support.   Ravi writes, “The first block was designed to be built using maximum local materials and local skills so that it could be done with the least cost and time. The buildings are made almost entirely of stone available in the local area, and there is no wood used as wood is expensive and vulnerable there. This also came close to Mahatma Gandhi's approach of using only locally available materials.  So our buildings are very much of their place, geography, climate and people. They are also optimized for their function, with very little energy being used. On the start of the hot summer of 1992 at the start of digging for the foundations of the first block at the school in Bali, the earth was so hard that water- bought from a farmer- had to be poured on it to break it! As you can see today, the land was barren, and there was no soft greenery, only thorny bushes.” Ravi Kaimal, visiting the area frequently before the school is set up to collaborate and brainstorm with John and William Bissell; As the Principal and Founder of Kaimal,  Chatterjee Associates, an architectural firm in New Delhi, formal training includes a B.  Arch (1987) from the School of Planning;  Architecture, New Delhi and has been practising in Delhi since 1990. Ravi's interests and experience extend beyond architecture to photography, art direction for films (Art  Director of Arundhati Roy's feature film) and rural education; Ravi has travelled extensively in India,  Nepal,  Sri Lanka,  US, Spain, Italy and UK  photographing places of architectural and environmental significance. He is the recipient of a prestigious UNESCO award for heritage conservation for his work in Rajasthan. In the show, he credits his passion for education to his family and grandparents, shares how the focus on the girl child and push for quality education in rural India has made a huge difference. As a parent, he adds that today with technology and tools, couples and balance work and family raise children who are better equipped for the world.

VGS was looked upon merely as a place where girls got free meals. But as girls learnt to read and write, helped their parents with mathematical calculations and reading newspaper/letters, parents realised the importance of girl education. Girls who have completed vocational training programmes are now gainfully employed. Listen to her story of awe and inspiration, starting with 20 girls to near 750. A Revolution in Education - Sandeep and Kiran share their stories and their passion
A Revolution in Education - Sandeep and Kiran share their stories and their passion
Sandeep and Kiran share their stories and their passion for changing how we support youth around their heart, love, making a better world, and relationships. And then Chris asks: For someone listening to this, what can THEY do? Sandeep Dutt is the author of The Good School, founder of Learning Forward India and the Learning Forward podcast, Ambassador of hundred.org, Chairman of the Bhadrajun Artisans Trust,  entrepreneur mountaineer doing what he can to create "happy schools" for a better world.  Kiran Sethi is the founder of the Riverside School in India, which has, over the last 20 years, become a  beacon of possibilities when you focus on students and empower them to make a difference in the world, which has subsequently created a global movement called Design for Change. As much as our world changes – socially, economically, politically and technologically – for the most part, our schools remain the same.  Yes, there are some minor improvements.  And good ones too.  However, most of these are still employed within an antiquated system and practices that do very little to impact our youth's greater well-being and future truly.  To judge schools (as we have done) solely on students’ performance on standardized ELA and math assessments has unwittingly pressed most schools and their systems made accountable to these results to “double-down” on this focus at the expense of the greater well-being of our youth. But what do we mean by the greater well-being of our youth?  Rather than answer that by myself, you can hear this from the voices of the dozen-plus outstanding educators who contributed to this podcast.  And not only do they speak to the need for a transformation/revolution of our schools and school system for the greater good of our youth, but in the end, the greater good of our communities and our humanity. Touched upon throughout is the need to allow ALL of our youth to pursue the lives they wish to live.  Touched upon is the need to imagine the possibilities of learning and learning communities that can contribute to the well-being of our youth, our communities, and the world and the NEED to pursue these possibilities and learn as we go.  Finally, the contributors speak eloquently about the power of relationships within and across communities to transform education toward a greater purpose and engage everyone in that transformation.  We need to co-create so that we can co-learn, which can then lead us all to a shared transformation of outcomes rather than the transactional factory system we seem to be stuck in that resembles the "I Love Lucy" chocolate conveyor belt (if you are old enough to have seen this clip). We need gardens that both value and support the natural growth of our youth.  And we need gardens plentiful with the resources that allow each individual and the garden to thrive and be abundant and generative. These educators give us some insight as to what it takes to grow such gardens – the result of a revolution through transformation. ►Follow The Revolution Website: https://www.arevolutionineducation.org/

Kapil Gaba "I am passionate about Education...
Kapil Gaba "I am passionate about Education...
Episode # 67: Sandeep Dutt, in conversation with Kapil Gaba, is committed to fighting systemic inequality by democratising and decentralising access to resources and support networks. Kapil has spent the last 16 years in the education sector and has moved to innovation and entrepreneurship. He believes these will be the drivers of the economy and society for the next 20 years—they're a startup based in the United States of America. OneValley’s mission is to be the World’s Innovation Community that supports the global startups and their founders with critical services and support in their ideation, launch and acceleration. The transition was necessitated by the fact the traditional model of getting a University degree and then getting a job will be increasingly under challenge. With more technology replacing people, there may not be enough jobs to support students in millions completing their education every year. Therefore, a lot of these students will have to become entrepreneurs either by choice or by circumstances. We need ecosystems and communities to support people engaged in entrepreneurship. In the show, he talks about a life-changing incident where one young person lays prostrate on his feet, speaking
