How to keep your boundaries while being generous

How to keep your boundaries while being generous

How to keep your boundaries while being generous

This is probably a touchy subject for a lot of people. No one wants to acknowledge that it isn’t always “fun” volunteering or being in a situation where you don’t feel like you can extricate yourself politely. Even when you really do need to get out of there. I totally get it. It’s hard to tell someone you need space or a moment to reset or to end the conversation altogether. So What’s to be done then? How can we keep our boundaries while still being generous? I’m so glad you asked!

That is exactly what this episode is all about. There are some vague and roundabout threads in the episode but bear with me, I promise it’ll be helpful.

A little about the inspiration for the episode...

Everywhere you look you are probably going to find ways to tell your own story. For a really long time that is how you could work with the Legacy Recorder. What you will see around the internet are writing prompts, story ideas, and detailed instructions on how to tell your own story. You'll also find beautiful journals, well-executed programs and beautifully designed systems to do this for yourself.

Somewhere along the way, I realized that there were already people and companies doing an incredible job of supporting families and individuals with their storytelling adventures. About that time I started thinking about and deciding exactly what I loved about the work I did.  What I found was that I really enjoyed helping people learn how to do something new or how to do a “thing” better. That “thing” was storytelling, having conversations and facilitating incredible experiences that impacted many.

You may not know this, but while I was talking about how to talk to your mom or grandmother, I was also teaching, training and supporting volunteers, staff, and residents in their storytelling adventures.

Through that experience, I discovered a lot of things. One thing I discovered was how to utilize the prompts I created and apply them in a storyteller/facilitator situation. What I want you to know is that any resource, tool, or platform that is out there for individuals and families can be adapted to be used in a facility, care situation, or other instance where there is a patient/staff relationship.

This is one of the core components of Legacy and the process I walk staff, volunteers, educators, and facilities through.

How to embrace joy in your End of Life Celebration

How to embrace joy in your End of Life Celebration

Join Christina Andreola (New Narrative) and Gael Gilliland (The Legacy Recorder) as they chat about personalized Celebrations of Life and how hiring an Event Planner can be one of the best decisions you'll make during this process.

We discussed the Celebration of Life event trends (yeah!), options for families, and the different ways families are telling the stories of their loved ones.

~

Christina was always passionate about telling people stories. When she had the unique opportunity to help tell her uncle story in the form of his celebration of life after he passed away, she, of course, said yes. She had already been a part of the event planning industry in Canada for a number of years.

Her family felt she was an obvious choice to plan what would be a large-scale event for her uncle's celebration of life. From lining up caterers to securing the venue, Christina planned out the event so her family could process and morn uncle’s loss.

The funeral and death industry has long been a dreary, depressing, sad and dark expression of a loved one. The next generation of funeral and death industry professionals are encouraging families and loved ones to embrace joy in their end-of-life celebrations. the focus is on the story of the person and the way they lived their life rather than how and why they died.

While this change has been happening for a while I believe Gen-X and Millennials will be at the forefront and forerunners of this culture change. Christina with New Narrative memorials is one of those leading the charge.

~

I sincerely hope you enjoy the interview.

How Grief effects us physically.

 How Grief effects us physically...

Grief affects everyone differently and that includes the physical effects. This time of year is when I feel those effects most often. A few things I experience...

• Overwhelming sadness
• Overly tired/exhausted
• Nausea
• Crying at weird times
• Aches and pains and general fatigue

Sometimes it's just as strong as it was in the days/weeks/months following my Dad's death.

What are some of the effects you feel?

What to do when death happens *Trigger Warning*

What to do when death happens *Trigger Warning*

 ***Trigger Warning*** #death #dying #grief

Inevitably, someone you know, love, care for... is going to die, or a friend's someone they know, love, care for... is going to die. It's a matter of when, not if. There, I said it.

I know it isn't pretty or fun to think about and it's often a taboo subject we don't mention in mixed company. We skirt around it instead of running headlong into the wall of grief surrounding those who are left behind.

Here are a few things I do and have done when #deathhappens...
Also, what I wish someone would have done for me when death happened in my family.

How to Work with Someone to Tell Their Story: Dealing with Dementia, Alzheimer's, & Memory Loss

How to work with someone to tell their story when they have dementia, Alzheimer’s or another kind of memory loss

Sometimes it can be hard to have, what we consider to be, meaningful conversations with somone who is experiencing memory loss. Taking the time to have these conversations with people regardless of their cognitive ability is crucial to their quality of life. The simple act of sitting with someone and really listening to how they are doing is a simple way to make a huge impact.
