#173 - Boundaries: Relationships in Therapy

How can a desire to please and/or be the one person to help someone with a long mental health history lead to problems? How should a clinician respond when a client believes they can only be helped by that clinician? How should a clinician respond when the client seems to be attracted to the clinician? #169 - Culture-Bound Syndromes of Latinx Culture

We welcome Megan Aguilera to the “Let’s Get Psyched” team by asking her to discuss one of her special interests. Terms such as “susto” and “ataque de nervios” are frequently used in Latin America to describe a variety of emotional reactions and behaviors that are often similar—but distinct from—mental health conditions commonly seen by clinicians. Megan, a fourth year medical student at the University of Colorado Denver, helps us sort through how and when these terms are used while also sharing her understanding of these terms amongst her family and community.

#139 - Prolonged Grief Disorder with Dr. M. Katherine Shear

#139 - Prolonged Grief Disorder with Dr. M. Katherine Shear

Prolonged Grief Disorder has recently been formally added to the DSM-5-TR. But are mental health professionals pathologizing a normal part of the human experience? We invited psychiatrist, researcher, and Director of the Center for Prolonged Grief at Columbia University School of Social Work, Dr. Katherine Shear, to discuss the differences between grief as a disorder and grief as a normal reaction. Besides being at the forefront of the movement to include prolonged grief as a disorder, she has also developed a therapy to help those suffering from overwhelming, extended grieving.

Make sure you listen to all 3 episodes as we have noted psychiatrist and trainer in medical record keeping, Dr. Tony Thrasher, to answer our questions. In this episode, Dr. Thrasher outlines exceptional situations when the provider can keep notes private. We also discuss the importance of reviewing the prognosis with patients.

#134 - Navigating the Era of “Open Notes” (Part 1)

On April 21, 2021 the “21st Century Cures Act” mandated that all healthcare providers grant clients/patients access to their chart “without delay” and without charge. While providing access to one’s chart usually works very smoothly for medical treatment, it’s a different story for psychiatric and psychological treatment. For example, it’s common for a client to lack insight about themselves—that’s a big reason for going to therapy. So how will the treatment be affected when the client reads about how their psychologist or psychiatrist thinks they don’t know what the problem actually is? Make sure you listen to all 3 episodes as we have noted psychiatrist and trainer in medical record keeping, Dr. Tony Thrasher, to help us answer these questions. In this episode, Dr. Thrasher suggests creative ways to use the open note as a clinical tool that promotes transparency and mutual understanding between doctor and patient.
