Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free, 089 - Neurodivergent and Empowered

Neurodivergent and Empowered! Anna Granta joins me this week to discuss ADHD, Autism/ASD, Dyslexia, and other neurodivergent conditions and the work she does to help adults uncover their strengths and thrive at work. We discuss the process of starting something new and getting okay with sucking as a beginner, connective thinking problem solving skills, and how to not pass our binary thinking on to our little ones. Anna owns Granta Coaching and works with individuals and groups using a mix of teaching and open coaching/exploration. She teaches people how their brain works best and strategies or tools that they can use in everyday situations, such as preparing for a difficult conversation. Her clients trust her and find her easy to talk to, so they are able to explore their changing identity and share their struggles as well as their successes. She reflects the best version of her clients back to them, celebrating their successes and stretching them to think critically about alternative actions/next steps. Welcome, Anna, to the Perinatal Podcast, and welcome back, Listeners! Find Anna! Website: https://www.grantacoaching.com/ Thanks so much for joining me for this episode of The Perinatal Podcast. Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free, 086 - Kaitlin Johnstone of Kind Cotton

What is Kindness? This week, Kaitlin Johnstone of Kind Cotton joins me to explore the many and evolving definitions of kindness, how inclusion can lead to a more compassionate and authentic world, and how both of us had trouble keeping our mouths shut in elementary school. Kaitlin Johnstone is the co-founder of a company called Kind Cotton. Kind Cotton is a clothing company dedicated to redefining kindness and putting books in the hands of kids. Their inclusive clothing helps to inspire others to rethink kindness as more than simple pleasantries, but rather take a deeper look into kindness being rooted in justice and grounded in action. With every purchase made, a book is directly given to a child through the Kind Cotton Reading Program. To date, Kaitlin and her husband Kevin have donated close to 145,000 books to children and teachers across the country. Welcome, Kaitlin, to The Perinatal Podcast, and welcome, listener, back to the show! Find Kaitlin! 084 - Recovering Manchild with Zach Watson

Zach Watson just changed a significant part of my relationship therapy/coaching conversations in this discussion. I used to say, "When we keep score, everyone loses." And while y'all know I deeply dislike an all-or-nothing statement, I have historically leaned pretty hard into that sentiment. Zach walks me through the difference between stat-keeping and score-keeping, and my mind and practice are forever changed! Zach is a Fair Play pro, encouraging all humans - generally men - on ways to help decrease the mental load for default caregivers. We discuss the ways to decrease defensiveness and function from a place of vulnerability in order to find solution-focused ways to nurture your relationship. And so much more. Thanks for joining us this week, Zach! Listeners, welcome back to The Perinatal Podcast. Find Zach! Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free - 083 Sleep Training & The Ripple Effect with Jensine Casey

This week on The Perinatal Podcast, our first-ever podcast guest, and goodness was she brave to do so, returns. Sleep trainer extraordinaire to my oldest and to many of your children, Jensine Casey!

Busting myths about sleep training - it absolutely is not all cry-it-out - and sending all the love and validation to our fellow parents, Jensine and I discuss the importance of doing what works for you as you attempt to navigate parenthood and raising tiny humans. I also provide Jensine with an update on how my little ones are doing in their sleep journeys, discuss re-discovering a meaningful hobby by crocheting a Jason Momoa sweater, and the importance of taking care of you first so you can be your best to support your family and loved ones.

About Our Guest: Jensine Casey is a sleep consultant, lover of all things beach-related, and mom to two handsome boys and a beautiful girl who are all amazing sleepers! She works with families of children 4 and under who are exhausted and struggling with getting their little ones to sleep for naps or at night.

Working with families in-home settings providing support around sleep and development for over a decade, Jensine has a Masters Degree in Early Childhood with a focus on Special Education and is a certified infant and toddler sleep consultant and postpartum doula.

082 - Thriving with Anxiety with Dr. David H. Rosmarin

Dr. Rosmarin, the founder of the Center for Anxiety and a Harvard associate professor, draws on research and clinical experience to show readers how to “make anxiety your friend.” Often, those who suffer from anxiety either exhaust themselves trying to cure it or resign themselves to a lifetime of fear and worry—but Dr. Rosmarin presents a third way: instead of fighting their anxiety, what if people could turn it into a strength?

This week on The Perinatal Podcast, Dr. Rosmarin and I apply his expertise in anxiety to the perinatal population. It's a chat you'll not want to miss!

Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free - 082 Thriving with Anxiety, with Dr. David H. Rosmarin

081 - How to P.A.R.E.N.T. with Jackie Santillan

This week on the show, Jackie Santillan wrote the book on How to Possible Actually Remember Everything Next Time, and she shares her tips with the Perinatal Pod Crew! Apart from having the cleverest book title possibly of all time, Jackie enlightens us with the stop, drop, and roll of parenting in her book and in this chat. We discuss pneumonic devices to aid in better responses during those rough patches, how to connect and learn together with our kids using humor, and we created the Therathon. You'll have to listen to learn more! About Our Guest: Jackie is a SAHM, a former elementary school teacher of 11 years with a master’s degree in counseling, and a lover of word play. She is passionate about helping parents break the cycle of trauma in order to create emotionally resilient children. In addition to content creation for the account @kindminds_smarthearts, Jackie is the author of How to P.A.R.E.N.T.: Possibly Actually Remember Everything Next Time. She writes, produces, edits, and stars in Ptera on YouTube to teach emotional regulation strategies to kids. And she co-hosts Hiding in Cars, a podcast for parents seeking a moment of zen in their cars. Find Jackie! Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free - 080 It's Not About the Wine, with Celeste Yvonne

"Celeste Yvonne, a founding host of Sober Mom Squad, an online community for nondrinking moms, implores 'women drowning in the mental load of motherhood' to rethink their relationship with alcohol and parenting in this passionate debut...Stressed-out moms will find comfort."

Publisher's Weekly shared that about this week's guest and her new book, It's Not About the Wine, and I couldn't have said it better any other way. And y'all know my husband sells wine & spirits for a living, so this is an ongoing discussion for myself, as well as how we want to discuss alcohol consumption as our children grow.

Listener, I am so delighted to share this chat with Celeste with you. She's doing the work, she creating the supportive spaces, she has literally written the book on helping mommas be present through the hardships that is parenthood rather than numbing out with a glass of wine in hand.

Tuck in, y'all. It's a fantastic ride, and I'm so delight you're here.

This week, Steven Miller joins me to discuss the space we hold for men in the fertility journey, the changes we hope to enact in the conversations about supporting non-birthing people, and the ways men can connect with each other to share and feel normalized in their experiences. About Our Guest: Steven J. Miller obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology at Northern Michigan University. Perinatal Plus - Ad-Free - 077 The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence with Jessica Lahey

This week on The Perinatal Podcast, Jessica Lahey joins me to chat about how to set our kids up for success in regard to what they put in their bodies even from a young age, what to have intentional conversations about quitting things like piano and soccer, even how to be a happier parent. What a delight it was having Jessica on to share about the effects of over-parenting, how to help build autonomy in our children, and how all of this is not done in one simple conversation, and I'm so excited to share our discussion with you! About Jessica: Jessica Lahey is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed and The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence. Jess was awarded the Research Society on Alcohol’s Media Award for “outstanding journalistic efforts of writers who cover empirical research on alcohol” […] “for her book The Addiction Inoculation and advocacy for the recovery community.” Over twenty years, Jess has taught every grade from sixth to twelfth in both public and private schools, and spent five years teaching in a drug and alcohol rehab for adolescents in Vermont. She has written about education, parenting, and child welfare for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and her biweekly column “The Parent Teacher Conference” ran for three years at the New York Times. She designed and wrote the educational curriculum for Amazon Kids’ award-winning animated series The Stinky and Dirty Show, and was a 2019 Pushcart Prize nominee. Jess holds the dubious honor of having written an article that was later adapted as a writing prompt for the 2018 SAT. She co-hosts the #AmWriting podcast from her empty nest in Vermont. She wrote a book! This week, Dr. Aliza Pressman of Raising Good Humans Podcast joins me to discuss getting obsessively curious, using real science in making your choices while raising tiny humans, and her new book, The 5 Principles of Parenting. In the age of high-pressure parenting, when so many of us we feel like we’ve got to get everything exactly right the first time, Dr. Aliza Pressman is the compassion, reassuring expert we all need—and the one whose advice we can all use. Already beloved by listeners of hit podcast, Raising Good Humans, Dr. Pressman distills it all with a handful of strategies every parent can use to get things right often enough: Relationship, Reflection, Regulation, Rules, and Repair. Don't let me forget, here's the video I reference in the conversation - Worth a watch! 072 No-Drama Discipline - The Perinatal Podcast with Special Guest, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson

This week on The Perinatal Podcast, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson discussed avoiding left brain interventions in times of meltdown, the difference between discipline and punishment, and how focusing on the wrong stuff leads to fear-based parenting.

We chat about coregulating as the parent alongside the child in stressful moments, how repeated experiences help nurture and develop the Whole-Brain Child, and how to meaningfully communicate to our children not every behavior is OK, but every feeling is. No-Drama Discipline is one of the books I read as a new parent with a vision of how I could operate more confidently as a parent, and I'm delighted Tina took the time for this chat. 070 The Julia Roberts of Greater Kansas City Perinatal Mental Health

This week, my mentor, The Godmother/Meryl Streep/Julia Roberts of Greater Kansas City perinatal mental health, Meeka Centimano joins me for a chat about perinatal mental health disorders (PMHDs), recurrence rates in subsequent pregnancy journeys, and how to set ourselves up for success along the way. Meeka practically created the ever-changing and growing landscape of perinatal mental health in the area, utilizing a social worker background that focuses on the bigger picture, inclusivity, and justice, as well as clinical acumen. She and her team focus on taking care of the many layers of people facing perinatal concerns in a nuanced way, setting the stage through a biopsychosocial lens for people to have support in line before a crisis can arise. 068 "Maybe I don't have to pee my pants?" With Special Guest, Dr. Rachel Moore

Dr. Moore of Disrupt Physiotherapy joins The Perinatal Podcast this week to discuss the importance of restoring functional movement and how her practice provides help for the entire family.
We chat about how insurance restrictions can (but don’t always!) impact client motivation if treatment is dictated by payment more than client goals, how our education system needs to do a better job of teaching us about our bodies, and how we can benefit from knowing more about what's happening to our bodies in the perinatal season.
Dr. Moore share about her specific evidence-informed practice with a goal of seeing her clients feel empowered through working on their pelvic and other health, discussing fueling your body for the rigors of parenting, which is absolutely an athletic endeavor, and I loved it so much I named the episode after her quote - "Maybe I don't have to pee my pants?" Heidi Mills brings us the education on all things Doula in this week's Perinatal Podcast!

Owner and Founder of Bloc Birth, Heidi provides collaborative and empowering birth experiences to her clients as well as a scholarship fund to make doula services more available in the KC area.

Heidi shares with us many "if only I'd have known" stories in hopes of educating the masses ahead of their own birthing experiences with the goal of understanding our own bodies and advocating for the birthing experiences we have envisioned. Bloc Birth fills in the gaps in an accessible and valuable way to help people navigate the overwhelm of perhaps too many options as well as help open paths for meaningful conversations with the various providers a person will have during their pregnancy and birthing experience.

066 All About Embryology with Special Guest, Victoria Wigley

Do you know what IVF is? IUI?
I had to pause for a minute in this conversation with the absolutely magnificent Victoria Wigley and ask her to explain. Because I realized, we have found a colloquial definition of IVF and fertility, but do we all really know what goes into it? Do we understand?

Victoria takes the time to unpack the ins and outs of what goes into Embryology. Why "Why don't you just do IVF?" isn't a real question. And how we can support our loved ones through their fertility journeys if we haven't done so ourselves.

We also take the time to chat about the importance of people like Victoria, who assist people through some of the most difficult conversations a person can have while feeling empowered with the knowledge to make the best decisions for their specific and individual situations.

*Disclaimer - The ideas discussed in this episode of Let’s Discuss… with Meg Duke are those of Melissa Howard and not those of the Department of Defense or The United States Air Force.* Melissa and I have known each other so long, we can't even remember how we met! This week, Melissa Howard and I discuss what it’s like to be a person in the military, the spouse of person in the military, a parent and bonus parent, and be told you can either be separated from your spouse or be assigned together in Europe, which is how Melissa is coming to us this week from Germany! We chat about how Melissa got into military service, the sacrifices she and all of her family members have made, and how she keeps herself sane. Which led us to discussing her new travel blog, The Traveling Tumbleweed! (See show notes for links!) Y’all will have to excuse me during part of this episode where I conflate three different trips of hers so badly, even she can’t help me piece it together. And she was there! She also asked me to mention she didn’t go into nearly enough detail about how dang hard all of it it, so I guess I need to have her back on the show again soon for that and updates on her travels! 064 Social Media & Our Children | Let's Discuss... with Special Guest, Phil Boucher, MD

In this week's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Phil Boucher of Frontier Pediatric Care to discuss navigating relationships with our children and social media, what screen time can look like for different children in different situations, ways to prevent and work through meltdowns and tantrums, and I couldn't help myself - Bluey gets more than one mention. A couple of mentions, for sure.Dr. Boucher discusses the concerns of our access to a firehose-amount of information and the concern that can bring with younger humans, including body issues, bullying, growing up too soon, and being consistently overwhelmed by the state of the world when accessing social media. We chat about the dopamine hits we all get when we doom scroll, which cause us to pick up our phones again and again, the levels of autonomy and freedom for children online, and how to work with loved ones to stay committed to a happy medium. With screen time, we talk about quantity v. quality, using it as an engaging and learning tool, and most importantly, we encourage listeners to not beat yourself up about utilizing technology in your parenting! It goes in seasons! Much more in this fantastic discussion with Dr. Boucher!Social Media & Our Children | Let's Discuss! 063 Queer Wellness Network | Let's Discuss... with Special Guests Misha McCoy and Jake Ryan

063 Queer Wellness Network | Let's Discuss... with Special Guests Misha McCoy and Jake Ryan

This week, Misha and Jake join me to discuss the Queer Wellness Network, which is committed to dismantling systems of oppression, recognizing that Black and queer liberation are the same struggle. Misha and Jake met in their doctoral program, studying Human Sexuality and saw a need for increased access to sex therapy and sex education resources for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Using a pay-it-forward strategy, they hope to see people matched with a therapist they can feel good about. QWN also provides high quality, intersectional education to help people move past the shame and structural limitations imposed on them by our dehumanizing society. In our chat, we discuss the political nature of sex, the importance of showing up as yourself, what meaningful support looks like, and how we can make efforts to dismantle barriers. Jake and Misha share what people can do to become allies for historically marginalized groups, including dismantling white supremacy, acknowledging our place in the systems, listening and believing members of the community. We touch on unlearning sexual shame, learning to check in with me, identifying the difference between boundaries set by society and those set by myself, and how to change our worldview from scarcity to one of abundance and love. There is so much to say about this episode, but rather than type a novel for you to read, click through and give us a listen! I will say, in addition to my standard sign off of, "Be curious, not judgmental," Misha and Jake have me excited for us all to operate in the nuance of the world and access and practice using our critical thinking skills. 062 A Conversation with a Somatic Sex Therapist | Let's Discuss... with Special Guest, Natashia Fuksman

This week, Natashia Fuksman, MFT, CST, joins me to discuss paying homage to our bodies and our sense of self in relation to others, holding space and normalizing the differences in our bodies after pregnancy and giving birth, and steps to begin healing relationally. Natashia is genuinely the boss of metaphors and providing different vantage points to look at and consider significant issues in a new way. This episode includes relating postpartum to puberty, toddlers learning what their yeses and no's are and how that relates to sexual encounters postpartum, a way for non-birthing people to contemplate how a birthing person's relationship with their own body can change, and generally, how to reconceptualize sexuality in its different forms. I could have chatted with them for another hour and hope to have them back on again in the near future, but for now, please enjoy this Conversation with Natashia Fuksman, Somatic Sex Therapist!
