Bio:
Teepa Snow

Once an enigmatic force of boundless energy, Teepa Snow has become a renowned figure whose life's work resonates with intensity and compassion in the realm of dementia care. Her path was carved out by a unique understanding of people, characterized by her ability to immerse herself in their personal spaces and deeply connect with them – a trait some considered extreme, but one that she embraced and magnified to better serve those with cognitive impairments.

Snow's journey began as a spirited individual, her personality already vibrant, but as she delved into the complexities of dementia, she amplified her essence – by fivefold, perhaps ten. This was not a mere occasional occurrence; it became her signature approach, one that could be misinterpreted and pose challenges for standard care methodologies which often inclined towards medication as a control mechanism.

As an innovator in this field, Teepa Snow's insights bloomed from direct observation and real-life interactions. She understood the paradox of transformation that dementia inflicts on personalities.

In the narrative of dementia care, Teepa Snow emerged not just as an expert but as a storyteller, whose own evolution reflected the metamorphosis she observed in her clients. She was a champion for the idea that understanding and adapting to each unique individual's change in behavior was more beneficial than attempting to stifle their altered expressions of self.

Patient, tenacious, and revolutionary, Teepa transcended the conventional, advocating for strategies that respect and harness the remaining capabilities of those living with dementia. Her legacy is one of empathy, education, and empowerment – reminding us that during brain change, the heart and spirit of a person remain navigable territories, deserving of respect and gentle guidance.

Strategic Brain Maintenance with Denise Medved: Ageless Grace's 10-Minute Solution

Strategic Brain Maintenance with Denise Medved: Ageless Grace's 10-Minute Solution

Cognitive Health Myths: "None of that is true, I discovered, after 7 or 8 years of research. At that time, they thought it was. But very shortly thereafter, Harvard did the first study that proved that cognitive function is not maintained by playing games. It's not even maintained by just exercising your brain."

Hello, listeners! Welcome back to "Life Happens with Kim Hegwood." This is your go-to place for stories, insights, and a dash of humor as we navigate the multifaceted journey of life. We may not have all the answers, but we sure have a great time exploring the questions together.

On today’s episode, we have a truly inspiring guest, Denise Medved, the driving force behind Ageless Grace, a program that's redefining the way we think about our brain health and physical well-being as we age. Denise brings a personal touch to our show, sharing how her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s sparked her deep dive into the powerful connection between the body and brain health.

Delving into the wonders of neuroplasticity, Denise will enlighten us about how our brains aren't just static organs lodged in our skulls but are dynamic powerhouses that can reshape themselves through physical movement and engagement in various activities. It's not just about the Sudoku puzzles, folks! We're looking at how strategic planning, memory, recall, and physical exercises combine to keep our cognitive functions in tip-top shape.

Denise unpacks the essence of her Ageless Grace program, highlighting the importance of regular, short bursts of varied, brain-stimulating exercises – and the best part? They can be carried out comfortably while seated, at any age, and they're fun since they're done with music.

So, grab your headphones, and maybe even a chair if you want to try some movements while you listen. It's time to tap into those neurons and chuckle along as we join Denise Medved in discovering the simple yet profound ways to keep our brains agile and robust no matter what life throws at us.

Alright, let’s get moving—both body and mind—as Life Happens.

Bio:
Ashley Ballou is a registered occupational therapist and has worked with clients and their families across the lifespan, including individuals with Dementia for over 10 years. Her passion for serving caregivers began when she became a long-distance caregiver of her late grandmother for eight years. Coming from a small family, she directly understands the time, emotional, physical, and financial toll caregiving wears on the caregiver. Thus, Caregiver Thrive, a care and wellness program for caregivers, was created. The program bridges the gap for caregivers who recognize the value of taking care of themselves, need therapeutic support and/or practical tips for their loved one, and desire a holistic wellness model, but don't want to google their way through the answers. Caregiver Thrive provides the concierge model of care with compassion and respect to their environment.

Long-Term Care: De-Myth-ified

Misunderstanding about Medicare coverage: "And what they're really referring to is, you know, my great aunt fell and busted her hip. And, she went into rehab, and she was in there for, you know, for a week or two, and then they sent her home, and now she's rehabbing at home. And Medicare is gonna pay that bill, but the delineation really is you gotta be getting better. And the point that you're not recovering, that is when Medicare is gonna cut it off."— Joe Roseman

What are companion services for seniors?

The Difference Between Caregiver and Companion Services: "A caregiver is hands-on care. That's for a senior who has progressed their aging journey to the point where they may need some hands-on care with Dressing, and toileting. Whereas companion services, we are oftentimes, the 1st step that a family may take, or a senior may take when they're understanding, okay, I wanna age independently and I need a little bit of help to do it, and so companion services are just that."— Mikey Newton

Tapping into Home Equity: Unlocking Hidden Savings for Seniors to Stay in Their Homes

Home Equity Conversion: "So the real advantage of the home equity conversion is you now have your own piggy bank because it's your own money. You can use it any way you want to use it. And if it's to take care of the spouse, that's fine."— Allan Berger

Title:   Tapping into Home Equity: Unlocking Hidden Savings for Seniors to Stay in Their Homes

Here is what Kim will ask Allan

1.     What is a Home Equity Conversion and who is it designed for?

2.     Why did Reverse Mortgages have such a black eye in the past?

3.     How can a Home Equity Conversion help a spousal caregiver care for someone with dementia?

4.     What do you feel are the major benefits of having a Home Equity Conversion for fitting a senior homeowner’s needs?

5.     How is the money that has been borrowed with a Home Equity Conversion paid back?

Bio:

Allan Berger the owner of Financial Flexibility Services is focused on educating senior homeowners and their families about the benefits of converting a portion of their home equity into a growing retirement fund. Allan and his wife did this 10 years ago to secure their financial future and it changed their lives in many positive ways. They realized their home equity was really their saving, their piggy bank, to use or not use, but would give them peace of mind knowing it was available if and when needed.

Allan is a retired corporate VP of a Houston Fortune 500 company, has owned several businesses and was asked to help other senior homeowners by sharing his story which has been doing for the past 6 years.

He often says he is like the Rogaine guy with hair because he is living proof that the personal story he is sharing is what possibly can be a path for other senior homeowners who are concerned about outliving their money. How can they continue to meet the increasing cost of most everything including medical needs, food, taxes, health, and long-term care insurance, and unanticipated expenses are surely on the horizon as seniors age, especially those with a fixed income and shrinking savings.

Advocating for The Rights of Long-Term Care Residents

Advocating for The Rights of Long-Term Care Residents

How a grassroots Facebook group is advocating for nursing home residents:

"We are just families that want to get stuff done. That's all we are."— Mary Nichols

On this episode of Life Happens with Kim Hegwood, Kim is joined by guest Mary Nichols to discuss the advocacy work being done for long-term care residents in Texas. Mary and a group of family members banded together out of necessity during the pandemic and successfully campaigned for essential family caregivers to have access to facilities.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone navigating challenges in life and looking to help others.

Topics

1: Long-Term Care Facilities

The group organizes campaigns like "Isolation Kills" and "Essential Caregivers" bill and successfully raise money in a short period of time.- The group is made up of families with loved ones in long-term care who want to make a meaningful impact.

Topic 2: Ombudsmen

Ombudsmen are important advocates for residents in facilities and can identify solutions that facilities and visiting staff may not be able to due to lack of patient knowledge and being short-staffed.During the pandemic, when others were not allowed in facilities, Ombudsmen were still allowed, making them crucial for resident care.

Topic 3: Essential Caregivers

Family members banded together out of necessity due to loved ones being isolated in long-term care facilities during the pandemic.- Mary started an online petition in June for essential family caregivers to be allowed in facilities.- The group introduced the essential caregiver concept to the state of Texas, and it turned out for the best despite not being planned.

Topic 4: Advocacy Work

Mary emphasizes that they are volunteers and family members, not lobbyists or attorneys. The group's strength lies in being constituents.- The group was invited to participate in a review of Texas Administrative Code rules for assisted living facilities as family stakeholders.

Bio:

I spent most of my adult life working in municipal government for four different cities in Texas and I founded Texas Caregivers for Compromise in July of 2020. Not only were we successful in getting essential caregiver guidelines included in our emergency visitation guidelines and a state statute adopted but we got essential caregivers put in front of voters as enshrined in Texas Constitution as well.

Our group has been recognized by Texas Health and Services Commission as long-term care resident stakeholders and that has allowed me to represent residents in several critical work groups including one that recently updated the Texas Administrative Code as it applies to Assisted Living Facilities and a current Infection Prevention and Control Building Design Task Force that is making recommendations for existing and future facilities. Our leadership team regularly works with other resident stakeholders to support and oppose bills that affect resident rights, and we provide support to families unfamiliar with visitation rights and help them contact their ombudsman.

Your Retirement and Caregiving for Aging Parents

Your Retirement and Caregiving for Aging Parents

Retirement Planning: "Either we learn from what our parents did right or maybe we learned from what they didn't do right."— Michelle Alleman

In this episode of Life Happens with Kim Hegwood, we explore the various benefits of life insurance in retirement planning. We cover different programs offered by Alman Group and how they can help one plan for retirement.

The discussion includes how life insurance can play different roles in retirement planning, including long-term care money alongside the policy. We also consider the importance of planning and budgeting for retirement goals like traveling. Taxes are a prevalent concern, and we offer ways to reduce taxes, including the use of tax-free products available through IRS code 77. Our guest speaker shares her story of becoming a cancer survivor and her passion for helping families plan for their future.

We end the episode with tips on avoiding long-term care and life insurance needs and the importance of obtaining these products when young and healthy to reduce costs.

[00:02:15] Learn from family experiences, be prepared for retirement, a personal story of career change after parents' death.

[00:03:37] Individual opportunities require clarity and exploration of available options. Education can help preparation.

[00:04:34] Preparation is vital when caring for elderly parents.

[00:04:46] Uncertain future for Social Security at age 65.

[00:05:13] Prepare for retirement and avoid outliving your savings.

[00:06:22] Focus on fixed income sources for retirement, access to other sources, and potential tax changes.

[00:08:03] Tax-free retirement options are available to regular people but are often unknown.

[00:08:20] Helping people make informed decisions for their retirement goals and budgeting for expenses like travel.

[00:09:57] Tax-free options like Roth IRA have limitations. IRS code 77.2 offers tax-free products but requires medical qualification and long-term investments. No quick retirement program exists.

Living Well With Dementia

Living Well With Dementia

"Dementia is not the end of your life. It's just the beginning of something different."

— Peter Berry

In this episode of Life Happens with Kim Hegwood, the speaker shares their personal experience of being diagnosed with dementia at the age of 50. The diagnosis triggered changes in their family and business, but they eventually realized that life wasn't over with the disease, just different. The podcast emphasizes the importance of simple actions to simplify the lives of people with dementia and prompt their memory.

The speaker is a co-author who has two books about a man living with dementia, which aim to preserve his words for posterity. His good friend Deb Bunt puts his words and his experiences in book form.

The podcast also discusses the speaker's coping mechanism of creating a physical representation of dementia in the form of a "dementia monster." Finally, the podcast talks about the impact of dementia on loved ones and the importance of addressing their needs too in caregiving.

Peter Berry- Suffolk-born Peter Berry, 55, was diagnosed at the age of 50 with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Previously the owner of a thriving timber business, Peter was suddenly unable to work or run the business.

After this devastating news, Peter became very depressed but, being a ‘glass half full’ personality has battled through this depression and focused on his main passion for cycling. He has used this passion to raise awareness of the condition, particularly in younger people.

One of Peter’s favorite mantras is that ‘life isn’t over with dementia, it’s just a little different and he takes this positive approach with him wherever he goes. At the same time, he tries to leave his dementia monster (an ugly, Humpty Dumpty man with a pointy nose and a grumpy expression) on the settee at home.

Deb Bunt is a London native who moved to Stockholm five years ago. She met Peter by chance, and they became fast friends, bonding over their love of cycling. Peter shared with Deb his experiences of living with dementia and the challenges it brought. Through his stories, Deb became passionate about spreading awareness and supporting the cause.

Sharing is Caring- A Guide to Make and Keep Caregiving Personal

Sharing is Caring- A Guide to Make and Keep Caregiving Personal

One of the things that have concerned us is there's been a lot of caregivers coming in and out of my parents' home. And that's with them just having someone once or twice a week. It's rarely been the same person. And for someone with dementia, we really feel like a little bit of consistency would be very key. And we've not achieved that yet. ~Kimberly Massey

Here is what Kim and Kimberly will be discussing today.

1.     Like many families yours has chosen to keep your dad at home for as long as possible. Was bringing in outside help hard for your parents to accept?

2.     Has your experience as a social worker helped your family?

3.     What has been your experience with home care personnel caring for your Dad with dementia?

4.     How can knowing what someone was like 20, 30 or 40 years ago help a home care worker do a better job?

5.     You created a workbook for families to have in the home. Can you tell us a little about that?

Caring for Mom- When Siblings Disagree

Caring for Mom- When Siblings Disagree

So, I have two brothers and two sisters. Which, you know, when you consider the caregiving circle, so to say, it's great to have that. But when it comes down to really making decisions it can be a hindrance. People have different ideas of what exactly Alzheimer's and dementia are and how you take care of someone. ~ Prisca Mendez Asaro

Here is what Kim and Prisca will be discussing today.

1.    Is having a large family a help or a hindrance when caring for someone with dementia?

2.    What do you do with the sibling who simply checks out?

3.    What about the sibling who is just angry?

4.    How does misinformation create more sibling disputes?

5.    How can the primary caregiver help find a role for everyone?

6.    How did the Alzheimer’s Association help your family?

And we gave her a baby doll. And we very quickly realized that the only way she would really be compliant at times when she needed to take medication or needed to shower, or we even needed her to eat more, was if she had her baby. ~ Tonja Moon

We also offer innovative and engaging Senior Living staff training on the use of diversion techniques utilizing our dolls. "My work with the elderly started with caring for my sweet grandmother, Ruby Sims who suffered from Dementia. The days were hard and long but love-filled. My grandmother loved designer clothes, designer dogs, big bold jewelry, vanilla ice cream, and pedicures...but most of all she loved her grandbabies! In the end, it was simply a baby doll that brought her comfort, during times of agitation and extreme confusion."

A Closure Ceremony- When a Senior Has to Leave Their Home

A Closure Ceremony- When a Senior Has to Leave Their Home

So many of them were literally mourning the loss of their house. And it just got me to thinking, you know, what a major transition that is, and a big loss for so many people because don't we love our houses? And often these moves are just so hasty and stressful, and tempers are flaring, people are at odds with each other, and nobody takes the time to acknowledge the magnitude of the change that this person is going through. ~ Libbie Vaughan

Here is what Kim and Libbie will be discussing today.

What is a Closure Ceremony and how did you come up with this idea?

Can you tell us a story about a client who inspired you to offer this service?

What kind of people benefit from your services?

Do you work with people with dementia?

What is the process?

Libbie’s 30 years of experience in Counseling and Senior Living is perfect to help with those big move decisions and life changes for many Seniors and their families. She and her son, Jackson, are the perfect duo in being able to help families make the decision of selling a home~~especially those homes that have not been updated to be MLS-ready~~.  The added service that Abode Home Investors are able to provide is helping with the emotional and stressful emotions of saying“goodbye” to a home and the memories tied into that.

Often a Seniors move is due to a crisis situation, health issue, etc., and a transition into a care community for assistance~~that Senior often doesn’t get any closure in leaving their home and being able to process the loss and saying goodbye.  This is where Libbie offers a unique and exceptional service~~a Closure Ceremony with the Senior and the Family.

When is the “Right” Time to Ask for Help/Assistance? A Senior’s Perspective

When is the “Right” Time to Ask for Help/Assistance? A Senior’s Perspective

I think they are afraid of losing their independence. You know, seniors are afraid that if they ask for help, their loved ones or their care partners or people that they put in control of their life are just going to pack up their belongings and send them to a care facility. And so they're scared, they don't want to be a burden. ~ Candace Green

Here is what Kim and Candace will be discussing today.

1. Why do seniors “put off” getting help?

2. How can bringing in help keep a senior more independent?

3. Is it common for a spouse to “cover” for their loved one with dementia?

4. What home care solutions can help a couple in this situation?

5. When the worry is money how can home care be the solution?

Staying Home with Dementia

Staying Home with Dementia

So anytime someone goes into a long-term placement facility, or nursing home assisted living memory care unit, it is never going to be one-on-one care. You're never going to have one-on-one care unless you're hiring a private caregiver to sit with that individual. And so with long-term care placement, that's very different than at home, where individuals will have usually one-on-one care. Even if it's their family and they know those people, you know, they're familiar. What we know about dementia and all aspects is that changes in routine, and changes in the environment can really cause a decline and continue to cause confusion. ~ Julie Leith

Title: Staying Home with Dementia

Talking Points:

1.    Is it possible to keep someone at home when they have been diagnosed with dementia?

2.    What are the pros of keeping someone with dementia at home rather than in a memory care facility?

3.    What are the cons of keeping someone with dementia at home rather than in a memory care facility?

4.    What resources do you recommend to help dementia patients stay in their homes?

5.    How can you help a family keep someone with dementia at home?
