Dr. Lipman trained at Georgetown, Harvard and Yale, and then became one of the world’s leading experts in the nonsurgical removal of uterine fibroids. He has dedicated his career to spreading the word about a lower-risk solution to fibroids called Uterine Fibroid Embolization. This procedure has helped many women avoid a hysterectomy, which is currently the second most common surgery for women in the U.S.

Fibroids disproportionately effect African American women due to genetic and other factors. Dr. Lipman explains why sometimes-unnecessary surgeries for fibroids still occur so often in the U.S., and how he hopes to see that continue to change as awareness grows about other options. Have you ever gone to the doctor and left feeling discouraged or dismissed? I know many black women have had this experience when trying to get medical help, so hearing Dr. Lipman’s passion for helping women of color was a truly refreshing change. At a time when many business owners felt frozen from fear and uncertainty, she was able to bravely venture into new territory and birth a whole new business while her hair shop was forced to halt.

We can all glean wisdom from her diligence in this; we don’t need to let economic pressures rush us, or our anxieties cause us to miss crucial steps - we can do the work that’s required to create quality content and products.

Angelita then modeled the products herself, generating quality photos from home during the pandemic - and sold out her first batch in one day! There is still so much we can do within our limitations, whether that’s a modest financial overhead, being restricted in our location, or even how much assistance we may or may not have in this season. I loved hearing about all of her creative solutions.

I also love how Angelita utilizes her geographic context in creating new products. Welcome back to Life Her Podcast. It’s Season 3! This is a solo episode, and I have some things I want to share with you, from the heart.

First, I’m so incredibly excited about my upcoming GRAND OPENING of my podcast content studio here in Akron, Ohio! It’s a few blocks away from LeBron’s new museum, and it officially launches at the end of April! Some of you may know I’ve been in business for 15 years, and I’ve also been through a lot in my personal life. So, I’ve been feeling prompted to be more open about my own experiences and growth process.

Today I share about my work schedule and routine, and how leadership and business ownership often requires me to be alone, and dig deep. A lot of times people only see what we post, but the hidden daily grind that we go through is not always acknowledged. Wherever you’re at in your journey, I want you to know that you can do this. Keep doing what you can, one day at a time, and don’t worry about things like pictures with celebrities or how people are perceiving your social media posts - keep your focus on growing your business and becoming as healthy as you can.

Know who you are, and WHY you do what you do. Make a practice of looking in the mirror, and finding your worth in the right things. It’s also so important to examine your inner circle and get your own house in order. I also open up about my battle with depression after losing my mom and then my late husband.

I’m processing these losses in the midst of lots of hard work, and the opening of my podcast studio is a bittersweet reminder to me; I know that these two close family members that I don’t have with me any more would be so proud. It’s hard to move forward without them, getting this studio space and opening this new venture, but I know I’m putting my energies towards the right things, and it’s all dedicated to them.

Lately I have this new resolve to say what I’ve got to say. I talk a lot about positivity, mindset and dealing with loss - deep things that maybe not everyone is ready to hear. But, I know my people will find me, and I want to share what’s real and transparent.

On today’s episode, we learn valuable tips about trademark, copyright law and securing our personal brand with The Biz Lawyer, Rosezena Williams.

Rosezena specializes in trademarks for beauty, fashion and entertainment brands. She’s amazing at marketing and very successful at securing the vision of her clients.

Rosezena knew she wanted to be in international business law since age 5 (wow), and during her undergraduate studies, one of her professors was a trademark lawyer and catered the class towards trademark law. A lot of people haven’t been given the right information about trademark law. Personally I’ve learned so much about the importance of protecting my intellectual property during the legal process that Rosezena led me through, while obtaining my own trademark.

For instance, if you hire a designer that creates your logo, they own the copyright by default. So Rosezena encourages us to enter in to a work-for-hire agreement, so that we can own our own logo outright.

We chat about how trademark law works in the beauty realm, how to research to see if a business name is available, and what constitutes required ingredient disclosure verses trade secrets.

We also talk about the limitations of specific trademarks, how renewals work, and how to know what class of business and region you need to register in.

Now that Rosezena’s brand is so huge online, she even shares how she’s had to protect her own brand from plagiarism and copyright infringement.

In her new book, The Colorless Womb, author Kimberly Gowdy tackles the topic of surrogacy and infertility head-on. On today’s episode, we talk with actor and rap artist Alexis Walker (aka Sexxy Lexxy).

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Lexxy Walker was on season 6 of the reality TV show Love & Hip Hop where she performed as part of the duo BBOD.

Lexxy has shifted from reality TV to acting, and even producing her own movie - a story based on her own life called Suffocated - as well as the many other ventures that she has going on in her business life!

Lexxy has always loved and pursued acting, even before she began creating music, but she shares that sometimes anxiety still hits her before a scene. Eventually, a company called Maverick picked it up for distribution, and I’m so glad it was released because it helps women to see a reflection of themselves; if you find yourself rooting for the main character to get free and find healthier relationships, then it may encourage you to root for yourself in your own story.

Lexxy talks about how it feels to watch herself in her own movie, and how she’s grateful to see what she came through.

She gives some loving advice to women who deal with womanizers and endure abuse: what to do if you see red flags, why it sometimes takes time for women to leave, and even how to think about seasons of singleness. She sheds light on how to utilize your community to find the support you need and deserve, even in a hard situation.

Then, Lexxy shares her thoughts on having a public platform, how to build up your personal branding, and how to look at life longer-term. It’s important to remember that what gets posted today effects the future, so she encourages us to reflect on how we’ll feel ten years from now about the content we create now.
