Are Kids Really More DEPRESSED and ANXIOUS Than Ever? What Can We Do? | Life Process Program

Are Kids Really More DEPRESSED and ANXIOUS Than Ever? What Can We Do? | Life Process Program

An alarming statistic from the NIH: 17% of 12-17 year olds in the united states is mentally unwell.

What accounts for this, and what can we do about it? (Hint: we've been trying antidepressants and therapy for decades and the problem has only become worse).

Zach and Dr. Peele drill deeper.

REBROADCAST: Re-Writing Your Life Story

REBROADCAST: Re-Writing Your Life Story

This is a playback of a 2018 episode of the LPP Podcast in which we discuss the following:

The Life Process Program takes clients through a staged review of their life stories, focusing first on mistakes, continuing to how they might have acted differently to avoid these pitfalls, to re-conceiving their life stories to focus on positives, and finally to projecting their life stories forward into positive, life-fulfilling narratives.

In today’s episode we incorporate LPP exercises and examples of Zach’s work with children, including sample maps he develops for each child,  to show how to put these steps into action in your own life and the lives of your children and other loved ones.

Similarly, examples of coaching feedback to LPP clients (disguised, of course, like Zach’s plans with children) will be presented throughout to illustrate advice in implementing each stage of the re-writing of people’s narratives.

This Man Studied the Lives of CENTENARIANS, What He Discovered May SHOCK You | Mario Martinez | LPP

This Man Studied the Lives of CENTENARIANS, What He Discovered May SHOCK You | Mario Martinez | LPP

Dr. Mario Martinez is a neuropsychologist who lectures worldwide on how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity. He is also the author of The Mind Body Code --- which you can check out on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/MindBody-Code-Beliefs-Longevity-Success/dp/1622037618 Importantly, Mario studies culture and belief systems, and how they affect longevity and well-being. (As opposed to a more conventional belief -- that genes pull the strings of our ultimate fate.) Zach explicates themes from Dr. Martinez's work, including his study of centenarians (people who live 100 years and longer); biocognitive science (a field which he founded); and the many ways that culture - and cultural beliefs - affect our health.

Talking Your CHILD Through ADDICTION, Collaborative Problem Solving THAT WORKS!

Zach Rhoads follows Dr. Peele's previous 5 "Ted Talks" -- 10 minute talks about addiction, natural recovery, harm reduction, and commonsense strategies for overcoming addiction. In his latest talk, Peele also laid out a "helping professional's" Bill of Rights, which instructs the following be present in helping individuals achieve a greater sense of well-being: (1) refuting idea that addiction is permanent inescapable disease (2) enabling people to realize valuable lives (3) encouraging responsibility (4) empathy tolerance (5) support community In this segment, Zach re-visits those concepts and helps parents / concerned loved ones think about how they may open a collaborative dialogue with a child experiencing addiction, without sounding preachy or judgmental, and while preserving own boundaries and expectations.

Most People Outgrow ADDICTION - 10 Minutes on How YOU Can Help

Most People Outgrow ADDICTION - 10 Minutes on How YOU Can Help

Rat Park and Vietnam tell us two crucial things about addiction and recovery. They first show that recovery is a natural process when the organism returns to a normally rewarding and supportive environment. Even more importantly — certainly not the rats, but the human beings in Vietnam were never conditioned to think of themselves as “addicts.” Thus their identities were never trapped, which is the hardest thing to overcome.

How do people QUIT ADDICTIONS? | It's a VALUES Statement

In this short video, addiction psychologist Dr. Stanton Peele explains that people quit addictions by finding ways to live their values (as opposed to simply choosing 'techniques'). He lays out the following points I. Dr. Peele's Uncle Ozzie quits smoking, suddenly II. Such a powerful addiction: how can a person do that (1) oh it’s only cigarettes (2) a HIGHER percentage of people quit cocaine heroin alcohol addictions III. Actually, at their basis, THIS is how everyone quits an addiction IV. It’s a value statement — not a technique V. What will enable people to quit en masse in today’s society: (1) refuting idea that addiction is permanent inescapable disease (2) enabling people to realize valuable lives (3) encouraging responsibility (4) empathy tolerance (5) support community

Psychologist Responds to Judson Brewer's Ted Talk | What is Addiction? How Can You Beat It?

Dr. Stanton Peele Delivers His OWN Ted Talk (From home), in response to Judson Brewer's talk, "A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-moW9jvvMr4 Summary: Have you noticed confusion, conflict and disastrous failures across the board around drugs and addiction? We at Life Process Program have (unfortunately) understood the hole we’ve been digging for ourselves for years. To dig ourselves out, we have to comprehend addiction, understand that it’s not some chemical side effect of drugs, and then apply this understanding to our personal lives and national policies.

Is Drinking HELPFUL or HARMFUL - Wanna Get CONFUSED? Then Read the NYT!

Is Drinking HELPFUL or HARMFUL - Wanna Get CONFUSED? Then Read the NYT!

Zach Rhoads and Dr. Stanton Peele contemplate the transfer of knowledge about alcohol from Science to Society — and how imperfectly the job gets done. “Alcohol: Even a Little Bit Is Harmful!” the headline screams. It turns out that none of the experts interviewed advocates abstinence — including the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (now there’s a title!).

In fact, those who drink, worldwide, live longer with fewer disabilities than those who never drink, according to WHO. What gives? Is the New York Times guilty of malpractice, or just sowing confusion — especially for older Americans, who benefit the most from drinking.\

Do we Americans do better simply living and drinking from our core values and lives? Sigh. You're on your own when it comes to deciding to drink (or use drugs) or not.

Why Is America SAD? | Anderson Cooper, Serena Williams, Taylor Swift, and TRAUMA THEORY

Why Is America SAD? | Anderson Cooper, Serena Williams, Taylor Swift, and TRAUMA THEORY

How did the main theme in American life become confronting the lifetime effects of trauma, rather than triumphing over them?

This preoccupation with trauma includes arguably the greatest stars in our universe: Anderson Cooper in political commentary, Taylor Swift in music, Serena Williams in sports, Steven Spielberg in movies. What does it signify about us that we now think of ourselves as permanently encumbered by such psychic chains?

he History of NON-DISEASE Addiction Treatment

he History of NON-DISEASE Addiction Treatment

Tom Horvath (SMART Recovery) and Stanton Peele (Life Process Program) delve into their decades’ long association in the battle to establish non-disease, harm reduction treatment in the United States. Their connection is supportive, even affectionate. Each in their own way — Tom through his decades of establishing an international association of SMART Recovery groups, Stanton by attacking the disease lobby — has contributed to a shift in the treatment paradigm.

Both SMART Recovery and the Life Process Program focus anti-addiction efforts through support for people's functioning, and not in terms of their use of substances. Both look forward rather than backward.

They end their discussion by considering whether, in accepting the accolades of Nora Volkow, Tom and SMART have created a system clearly distinct from the disease monolith.

Are "Alcoholism" And "Addiction" REAL? | DSM vs AA vs LPP

Are "Alcoholism" And "Addiction" REAL? | DSM vs AA vs LPP

There is a movement against use of labels like “alcoholism” and “addiction” as being pejorative and discouraging. 3

Zach and Stanton evaluate these critiques and discuss how to deal constructively with what some people call “loss of control” substance use. As always, their approach is to respect clients and their values, focus on the here and now, seek incremental and realistic improvements, and to not panic!

Removing The MAGIC From The Magic MUSHROOM

Removing The MAGIC From The Magic MUSHROOM

We have embarked on a psychedelic renaissance, including use for both therapeutic and consciousness expansion purposes. In both cases the drug allows people to recast their consciousness — of themselves, of their worlds, of eternity.

This shifting of the cosmic egg is captured by the title of the best seller (with accompanying Netflix docuseries) by Michael Pollan, How To Change Your Mind. Why would you want to change your mind? To rethink your life to live more productively, intimately, happily.

But that sounds like a lot of work! And so, with the neuroscientific, know-nothing bent that has caused America’s (and the world’s) mental health to plummet, neuroscientists now say all the needed changes take place solely due to the rearrangement of neurons in your brain that the drug causes. No mindfulness need be added!

988 Mental Health Hotline WON'T SOLVE our Mental Health CRISIS!

988 Mental Health Hotline WON'T SOLVE our Mental Health CRISIS!

The new mental health hotline is buckshot. Who actually thinks that calling a stranger for a few minutes addresses problems of depression and anxiety? Indeed, the idea that this makes sense is a symbol of America’s despair and cluelessness.

The hotline’s appearance in the aftermath of WHO’s June 17 World Mental Health Report, which pleaded for expanding nonexistent and disappearing community mental health resources, explains the plaintive tone of that document, which was created to refute quick medical solutions presented mainly by the US as the answer to declining mental health worldwide.

How the addiction concept drives us crazy | Part II: Harm reduction as Reductionism

How the addiction concept drives us crazy | Part II: Harm reduction as Reductionism

Harm reduction once sensibly meant dealing with the whole person to reduce their likelihood of harming themselves. Common sense examples abounded — like helping people find work, residences, and communities.

Now it has been narrowed to finding drugs that can cure addiction — an impossibility that implodes harm reduction on itself, losing both the meaning of the word and the power of the tool.

How the addiction concept drives us crazy | PART I: SMOKING

How the addiction concept drives us crazy | PART I: SMOKING

When we learned smoking was addictive we threw out all common sense: that people ultimately choose their fates, that they are led that way by their privileges and values, and that to believe that things are died in the wool only makes it harder for us to change those things.

Smoking became a bad habit to eschew, most people with advantages did that more or less, and the expense of smoking became the bad “luxury” of the poor and the deprived. All this true even as it is true to say smoking is addictive.

Top FIVE Mental Health BEST PRACTICES | Life Process Program

Top FIVE Mental Health BEST PRACTICES | Life Process Program

Biological psychiatry has IMPLODED, and everyone knows it, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the long-time (2002-2015) director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Thomas Insel, biological psychiatry’s biggest booster.

Yet, instead of the relief from mental illness and addiction Insel and the entire field have promised from the 1970s on, we are inundated with mental disorders and drug deaths.

NOW WHAT?

The WHO, Insel, and the ENTIRE FIELD are at a loss. With no there there, what is to be done?

Rushing to fill this breech, WHO is proposing a new Best Practices in Mental Health Guide on June 17, 2022. But given its progenitors’ failures for more than a half century, we may be dubious. Instead of waiting for their opus, LPP presents its own best practices, one predicated on common sense knowledge of how humans succeed, rather than a half century of continuous failure.

How Jason Bateman BEAT TRAUMA and Became a STAR In His 50's

The Netflix series “Ozark,” besides being a sustained “hit,” has several psychological and addiction merits. First, show runner and star Jason Batemen could have been a basket case child actor victim. Instead, he’s a role model.

Second, Ozark depicts every variety of drug and alcohol use and reaction.

WORSE Than Drugs: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Were LOVE Addicted

We don’t care if Johnny Depp wins his defamation suit against Amber Heard. Nor will we render an opinion about whether “mutual abuse” can be used to describe a relationship where there is such a power differential (on Depp’s end).

What we will say is that both parties participated in an addictive relationship, one that both say destroyed their lives.

How To Avoid Being DUPED | Addiction, Love, Values, and LESSONS learned from "Bad Vegan" Series

How To Avoid Being DUPED | Addiction, Love, Values, and LESSONS learned from "Bad Vegan" Series

How do we respond to virtually insane behavior by vital, creative women who devote their lives to petty shysters and hoodlums who rip them off and destroy their livelihoods, families, lives? We can issue warnings about checking out online hook-ups. But the signs are always there, background checks or no (hints: when they say they are secret agents, ask endlessly for money, cut off your family connections, etc.) Yet brilliant women still go down the tubes.

Take the case of “The Bad Vegan,” Sarma Melngailis, who conquered New York and the world with a new veganism, and ended up on the lam in anonymous motels, in prison, $millions in debt, and even ripped off her mother for $hundreds of thousands. All for an obese con man who “brainwashed” her into loving him.

Keyword: Values

Added bonus: How to raise a child who will not likewise succumb.

OTHER DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM THE EPISODE:

- How did Elizabeth Holmes fool the world?

- How did Bernie Madoff get people begging to invest their money for them?

- How did the Tinder Swindler manage to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars from women who didn't have the money to begin with?

- How in the world could the otherwise pro-social Sarma Melngailis be convinced to run from the law and steal money from her family?

Single Drunk Female | What Modern Streaming REVEALS About Harm Reduction

Single Drunk Female | What Modern Streaming REVEALS About Harm Reduction

AA doesn’t dominate the alcohol and drug scene the way it did in the last century.   Harm Reduction has become a new buzz word, claimed by the most unlikely sources.  Meanwhile, popular streaming media depict the reality of a wide variety of substance use patterns by younger generations.

And, yet, as demonstrated by series like “Single Drunk Female” and “Euphoria,” when it comes to “recovery” there’s only one game in town — 12-step “sobriety.”

How To Avoid CATFISHING Scams! | Desperate For Love versus SELF EMPOWERMENT

How To Avoid CATFISHING Scams! | Desperate For Love versus SELF EMPOWERMENT

The podcast “Sweet Bobby” raises the question, “What do you call it when a talented, caring woman devotes ten years of her life to an imaginary character, and can still barely function in the aftermath?”

Unfortunately, Tortoise Media is not up to the task. Just like America blames drug manufacturers for our drug deaths epidemic while it rages on, interviewer Alexi Mostrous blames the wiles of the perpetrator of this hoax.

He thus has no tools—or ideas—for helping a woman with as severe a love addiction as can be.

Phil Collins' NON AA "Recovery" + We Answer Questions About Addiction

Phil Collins' NON AA "Recovery" + We Answer Questions About Addiction

Dr. Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads respond to listener feedback.

First, they inspect the old AA adage, "One day at a time"

Then they turn to a case study centered on a former LPP participant (with her permission) -- a case study on overeating and how to manage it in the larger context of a person's life.

Finally, they discuss former Genesis drummer Phil Collins' UNREMARKABLE story of natural recovery -- a story that he, himself tells in his memoir as well as this interview: https://www.axs.tv/channel/the-big-interview-with-dan-rather-season-4/video/phil-collins-1/

Dirty John and the Tinder Swindler

Dirty John and the Tinder Swindler

Does love addiction exist?” commentators question. Yet our most popular streaming media stories are replete with the cases of people whose lives are severely disturbed by harmful, irrational intimate involvements — up to an including death. Take “Dirty John”

Meehan (who is dead at the hands of a victim) and Betty Broderick (who killed her exhusband and his replacement wife). Then there are the hundred of thousands of dollars harvested by the Tinder Swindler from women trolling for love.

Alcoholics Anonymous: A Net Good or a Net Harm?

Alcoholics Anonymous: A Net Good or a Net Harm?

Is AA helpful?

Some people claim that AA offers specific benefits. We should say that we endorse anybody’s right to pursue any form of support or treatment they want, or find helpful, from AA to religion.

But our training and experience cause us to doubt AA’s supposed benefits. One such claim is that making amends to people alcoholics have hurt is a way of reconstructing damaged relationships. But we find that a very indirect way of going about the process of examining and improving relationships, which is a major focus of the skills taught in the Life Process Program.

A second claim for AA is that the “fellowship” provides group support. It does, but at what cost? We ask whether the goal of a support group is to cement people into that one group (AA), or to broaden their outreach to people and the world. The latter is, of course, the LPP approach.

We further describe (Zach references his personal experience) how AA undercuts people’s actual feelings and beliefs in order to purvey its own philosophy and “religion” (for example, powerlessness and turning oneself over to God). For Zach and others, AA, rather than offering such a benefit, is a “mindfuck” that undercuts people’s ability to navigate their own feelings.

In the end, we find AA’s net impact to be a negative one, for individuals and society.

The End of Trauma with Dr. George Bonanno

The End of Trauma with Dr. George Bonanno

Dr. George Bonanno's decades-long research on trauma and resilience reveals that most people overcome traumatic and adverse events in their lives.

More important: people who do feel plagued by chronic dysfunction after traumatic events have the capacity to re-map, regulate emotions, become more flexible, and self-regulate so that their lives are not defined by traumatic events in the past (i.e. people can be resilient).

Zach asks Dr. Bonanno about his role at Columbia University (where he runs the Loss, Trauma, and Emotion Lab). Then the two discuss his new book, "The End of Trauma" and the practical applications of his findings: specifically, "HOW can people become and remain more resilient?"

Zach then identifies parallels between trauma theory and addiction theory, as the two discuss reasons for ubiquitous misinformation in both fields.

HOW TO PREVENT TRAGEDY School Shootings, GUNS, & Connection

Zach and Stanton discuss the profiles of school shooters. They see a lack of connection that is also present in youth (and older) addiction problems. Zach describes working with such children, including how he might have dealt with the 15–year-old Michigan shooter.

Full disclosure: Neither Stanton or Zach know the backstory of this event beyond mainstream media coverage.

I May Destroy You + Radical Empathy

I May Destroy You + Radical Empathy

Stanton and Zach review America’s allegiance to the opioids-are-inevitably-addictive scenario even though (a) it’s wrong, (b) 100,000 people a year are now dying due to drug use. But separation from our opioid-disease scenario is hard to make happen.

Instead, perhaps, we may find popular media programs that express our point of view in order to get our ideas across. The award-winning show, “I May Destroy You,” is about a millennial woman who gets in trouble with drugs, but still uses them. All kinds of drugs, in all kinds of combinations. This is far from the clinical ideal. But this woman survives — even thrives.

That woman is successful and skilled — she has a good prognosis. Zach and Stanton then imagine worst-case scenarios, where people die rather than to extricate themselves from their surroundings/habits/relationships. Radical empathy requires that we work within their cognitive framework. Suicide prevention specialists may now say to those who attempt suicide — “I understand why you want to kill yourself.”

Radical empathy.

Hulu's "Dopesick" is the NEW War on Drugs

Hulu's "Dopesick" is the NEW War on Drugs

“Dopesick” is the new version of the War on Drugs for people who want to demonize drugs but to claim they’re not drug warriors. “It’s in the brain” they screech, pointing to their heads.”We’ll cut painkiller prescriptions and ramp up MOUD around the land. So what if more deprived people die — they’re not on our addiction reovery mailing lists.”

To lighten our podcast, we review what the NYTimes says about being happy: “Don’t focus on your trauma, but reframe your life optimistically.” (Sorry, Gabor — the Times hasn’t gotten your life-shattering  message!)

DISEASE ENVY - Why People Yearn For Labels, DESPITE Their Best Interests

DISEASE ENVY - Why People Yearn For Labels, DESPITE Their Best Interests

Stanton and Zach discuss why the disease theory will never die in America, no matter how many Americans die from drugs, even as Carl Hart and others (futilely) join Stanton’s antidisease campaign after four decades on his own.

They then move on to marvel at “disease envy.” Some privileged  women now welcome ADHD diagnoses, which had previously been restricted to men, and especially minority men. This, even as many Black critics saw the ADHD label as a major impediment to young Black men’s progress.

This embrace of ADHD and her other disease medications means she can no longer cry at Springsteen’s music, even though “Bruce” inspired her to love her trifecta diagnosis of anxiety-depression-ADHD.

Joe Rogan's talk with "ALL IS DOPAMINE" Addiction Expert - OUR RESPONSE

Joe Rogan's talk with "ALL IS DOPAMINE" Addiction Expert - OUR RESPONSE

Dr. Peele and Zach Rhoads respond to clips from Joe Rogan's recent interview with Stanford Psychiatrist and Author Anna Lembke.

It was with some disappointment — but little surprise — that we watched “iconoclast” podcaster Joe Rogan interview an “all-is-dopamine” addiction expert (a position that even Nora Volkow seems to be backtracking on). Disappointment because Rogan seemed so sympathetic to Carl Hart’s opposite position. But not surprised since (a) all-is-dopamine is the cultural fallback position, (b) Carl doesn’t require interviewers to grasp experimentally his (our) position that addiction is a lived experience.

We contend that Dr. Lembke's (America's) popular brain disease model NOT saved lives or prevented addiction in any meaningful way. Worse still, this reductionist "dopamine uber alles" model of addiction is actually doing MORE HARM THAN GOOD, as it permeates American culture and stymies people's ability to move forward in practical ways.

Stanton then reflects on a recent MedPage Today article about social media addiction.

INSTAGRAM Addiction, Revisiting "FREE RANGE", & New BRAIN DISEASE News

INSTAGRAM Addiction, Revisiting "FREE RANGE", & New BRAIN DISEASE News

Zach and Stanton review the addiction news of the week: from "love" addiction (actually, love is the opposite of addiction) to instagram addiction, to the perpetual search for addiction in the brain.

They then match their perspectives on Zach's interview with Lenore Skenazy, of Free Range children fame. Could she comprehend that Stanton and Zach separate addiction from drugs? Does Lenore think that kids can drink? Can they make productive contributions to the household, even when they're small?

Zach and Stanton wondered whether a breakthrough in understanding with Lenore was/is possible.

Lenore Skenazy | Future-Proofing and ADDICTION-Proofing our Next Generation

Lenore Skenazy | Future-Proofing and ADDICTION-Proofing our Next Generation

Today's guest wants to "future-proof" our next generation. That is, to tug on the natural tendency of children to explore, learn, and grow competent along the way, just as we, at the Life Process Program want to ADDICTION - PROOF our next generation.

Her name is Lenore Skenazy. Lenore famously (or infamously, depending on who you ask) allowed her child to ride a New York City subway home on his own. In her mind (and in ours), this was sensible, and offered her child to gain some independence in the real-world. Perversely, many parents around the country were horrified that Lenore would "subject her child to the dangers of New York City".

Lenore began to realize that adults in the U.S. tend to overprotect their children-- a trend which ultimately stymies their natural course of development-- of exploration.  This forms the basis for her book, "Free Range Kids" and her organization (with Peter Gray and Jonathan Haidt), "Let Grow".

Today, Zach speaks to Lenore about her work with children and families, and compares notes, as her conceptualization of child-rearing aligns with the LPP framework.

Zach Compares Heroin Addiction to Love Addiction -- Stanton Responds

Zach Compares Heroin Addiction to Love Addiction -- Stanton Responds

This is a short clip from Zach Rhoads' forthcoming interview with Dr. Stanton Peele.

Stanton wrote the best-selling 1975 book, Love and Addiction, in which he laid out a conceptualization of addiction that transcended the drug-centered conceptualization with which the world was familiar.

In this clip, Zach expresses to Stanton how his concept rings true in his own life as he compares his own heroin addiction to destructive relationships with women. Zach runs a thought experiment about how those relationships could have metastasized if he would have pursued them into the future.

Stanton responds.

Enjoy this 6 minute clip!

The Ethics of Fighting Disease Myths

The Ethics of Fighting Disease Myths

There’s no need to contest or censor divergent views on addiction and mental illness as told, for instance, by Koren Zailckas, William Styron, and T Kira Madden. They are effortlessly assimilated into the big ball of wax of the standard disease theory.

The process is aided and abetted  by leading theorists and commentators like Sally Satel, David Brooks, Maia Szalavitz, and the New York Times.

Stanton, on the other hand, impolitely disputes these things, while Zach tries to toe the line between confrontation and understanding.

MARK NORMAND: Implanting the Recovery Chip | Trauma, Role Models, NON RECOVERY STORY

MARK NORMAND: Implanting the Recovery Chip | Trauma, Role Models, NON RECOVERY STORY

Zach and Stanton discuss Mark Normand, who as a young man would certainly pass  Gabor Maté’s muster as traumatized.

Normand developed drinking issues in his 20s, but didn’t follow the recovery route away from alcoholism. In fact, the recovery chip has to be implanted, as it isn’t the natural response of most people, who instead recover naturally.

What, Stanton and Zach ask, is the result of the culture-wide adoption of this unnatural— actually quite bizarre— response?

Afghanistan, Vietnam and the Disease Theory of Addiction

Afghanistan, Vietnam and the Disease Theory of Addiction

Our massive failure in Afghanistan reminds us of cultural delusions that have gutted us in the past—starting with Vietnam. Vietnam signaled that we didn’t comprehend the consequences of our overseas adventures. It also showed that we had no idea about the relationship between drugs and addiction.

We still don’t.

HARM REDUCTION & Community Healing

HARM REDUCTION & Community Healing

Zach discusses the personal meaning of community as “therapy” in terms of his own experiences of a family tragedy, one that drew his extended family together. In this discussion he reflects on the view of addiction from a five-year-old’s perspective, finding it to be superior to that of leading addiction specialists, and on the special burden of revealing and dealing with a porn addiction.

Stanton and Zach then describe their use of harm reduction and taking an incremental approach to helping people with addictions that resist a ready resolution.

Lean on Me: Stanton sings COMMUNITY as therapy

Lean on Me: Stanton sings COMMUNITY as therapy

America is convinced that if it can only provide enough medicalized treatment that all of its citizens will be fine. The opposite is true. As Stanton quotes a chapter head from his memoir:

“The Remedy for Addiction is Purpose, Connection, and Self-Acceptance —  we are instead wedded to medicalization, isolation, and self-stigmatization.”

We watch addiction and mental health outcomes worsen as we lose community supports and our sense of personal agency. But we are hellbent on pursuing this direction.

Sober Good; Drinking Bad -- Why "Sobriety" is the Modern Temperance

Sober Good; Drinking Bad -- Why "Sobriety" is the Modern Temperance

Remarkably, American anti-alcohol forces are front and present in contemporary progressive thought. They are amplified by incessant clarion calls for people to abstain — i.e., to enter “”recovery.” (Query by Ethan Nadelmann: does that mean marijuana too?)

Leading recovery advocates interview and feature prominent media figures — but ignore Bob Weir and Demi Lovato, on the one hand, and Carrie Fisher on the other. They also defy harm reduction. In doing so they endanger all of us, America’s public health, and problem users.

Politics, Britney Spears, Trauma, and DISEASE

Stanton and Zach dissect the current news cycle.

First, Britney Spears revealed she is being medicated against her will. She is still being held captive by her “diseases” (the ones she had in her early twenties). Drew Barrymore and Lindsay Lohan outgrew theirs. Demi Lovato, on the other hand, had to fight her way free of her “handlers” — and from 12-step “sobriety” — to become her own person.

Meanwhile, the candidate for New York mayor Stanton voted for, Eric Adams, is leading in the tallying. Adams appeals to working class Blacks and whites who want more police security. Adams disparages “fancy” candidates like Maya Wiley, whose upscale neighborhood* hires private security. Wiley’s excuse is that 20 years ago her husband was assaulted, and he is traumatized.

But in the neighborhoods where Adams scored big, trauma is just another word for daily life. And Adams thinks the social elite just don’t care about these neighborhoods and people, like Stanton says the social elite doesn’t really care about those dying due to drug use.

Both of these stories implicate life processes and addiction.

But now (hold onto your hats) they’re performing brain operations on addiction!

*Stanton, Zach and Sean Kensing recently had breakfast in this neighborhood — and current mayor bill de Blasio walked by.

Matthew McConaughey and Quinta Brunson -- Parents, Trauma, and Forgiveness

Matthew McConaughey and Quinta Brunson -- Parents, Trauma, and Forgiveness

In memoirs that defy current thinking, Matthew McConaughey and Quinta Brunson describe being beaten and repressed, respectively, by their parents. Only they don’t currently dislike their parents or disapprove of their upbringings. Rather they celebrate what their parents did provide—support and love—and their own acceptance of their parents.

Both McConaughey and Brunson refuse to consider themselves traumatized, victimized, or damaged. Rather, they have focused on creating unique, indelible careers and intimate relationships. Both give good representations of being happy, successful human beings.

In the course of this development, Brunson had an addictive relationship, followed by a years-long withdrawal period that crushes her spirit and reduced her to 80 pounds. Then she overcomes addiction and withdrawal in her further relationships by pursuing her career and soul purpose. Oh, while drinking and taking drugs to support both her personal and professional goals.*

Both McConaughey and Brunson seem to feel an obligation to be honest in telling their stories.  Go figure.

*I neglected to mention that she feels smoking a bowl is essential to creating a meme.

Mare of Easttown -- Is HBO Moving Away from Drug HYSTERIA?

Mare of Easttown -- Is HBO Moving Away from Drug HYSTERIA?

HBO has become the ultimate destination of Harm Reduction in streaming media with its shows Mare of Easttown and Hacks. In both, the show’s protagonists (again played by women) drink (Mare) and consume drugs (Hacks) without being driven to perdition. Moreover, the creators of each series seem to be actively pursuing a harm reduction vision — meaning not blaming drugs and alcohol for people’s life problems.

SHOW SUMMARY

Stanton and Zach discuss the importance of narratives in determining views of drugs and alcohol. Indeed, these narratives are the critical determinants of drug reactions, individually and culturally. Thus, how American media has shown drug and alcohol use has been crucial to the American drug, addiction and alcoholism experience.

Stanton provides a brief history of American views on alcohol and drugs, as seen through the 20-year skein of the TV series Gunsmoke. Alcohol was drunk casually and socially by the show’s stars, while excessive, drunken and alcoholic drinking were controlled within the community.

American television shifted to the recovery vision of the dangers of alcoholism and as requiring complete abstinence in the 1980s (following Betty Ford) with the appearance of the hit series, Murphy Brown. In many ways, the recovery vision of drinking has continued until the present in mass media.

Drug use has never been a comfortable part of American television, leading to shows referencing marijuana — such as The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and Tales of the City — to be quickly cancelled.

The emergence of streaming programming has opened mass media to a different view of substance use and problems, which can de termed harm reduction. In Jessica Jones, Good Behavior, and In the Dark, female lead characters drank and got drunk while still being constructive people.

And most recently, the shows Mare of Easttown and Hacks have provided a realistic portrayal of people and their problems-- making HBO something like a harm-reduction-promoting organization.

(Hacks actually takes on traditional shows’ treatment of drug use. When one character is hospitalized after a drug binge, she turns out not to have been laid low by drugs, leading to a life-saving operation for the drug- using character. This situation is essential for presenting harm reduction views and counseling, as well as for planning and running harm reduction education programs.)
