Phillips" journey to extraordinary change began after a series of serious challenges that derailed his hockey career that included extreme abuse, major injuries, and addiction. I'm Still Standing

I'm Still Standing

I grew up with a tremendous amount of sexual abuse from a very early age.  I went through a lot of self-destructive behavior, hospitalizations, and an eating disorder early in life. I went into foster care as a teen where the sexual abuse continued.  I became an emancipated minor at the age of 16 and then lived on my own while working full time. I got married when I was 18 and had 3 children right away (3 under the age of 3).We started doing foster care when our youngest was about 4.  At one point we had 8 children 8 and under.  I started nursing school when we had nine children living in our home.  Over the course of the next 25 years we fostered well over 100 children and took permanent legal guardianship of 10 girls.   My husband got cancer and suffered with cancer for 12 years before passing away in 2006.I had 4 girls living at home at that time and took in another one a few months after my husband died.  I completed 3 legal guardianships that first year after he died. I was a single mom and working full time. I started my master’s degree 12 days after he passed away.  I remarried in 2010 and by that time was in a doctoral program getting my doctorate degree.I finished it and continued to do medical mission trips all over the world (I have done about 30).  I then went back to school and got my post doctorate degree and am now double boarded as an Advance Practice Nurse (FNP and CNS). My youngest son passed away in 2021 after an 8 year battle with cancer and his story continues to inspire all who knew him.  My biggest encouragement to people is to NEVER give up and never remain a victim.  Use what challenges life has given you and learn to develop a passion to help others overcome theirs.  I have seen in my own life how God turned my sexual abuse into a deep passion to help others who might have had similar experiences.   My second husband and I have recently started a medical clinic in northern India that cares for over 140 girls rescued from sex trafficking and other abuses.  Without having gone through my struggles, I would have never developed the passions I have had to help others. I coauthored a book about my life and how God has used my struggles to develop passion and purpose in my life.   I have a website that shares more about my book, my mission trips, and my life story.
https://phillisdewitt.com   In the past six months, I have been able to share some about my story in Israel, Mexico, India, England, Costa Rica, Romania, and Ukraine.  My husband and I just returned from doing war relief efforts in Romana and Ukraine working with women and children who have lost everything due to their homes being bombed.    I currently teach at 4 colleges in their graduate nursing programs and continue to see patients once a week when I am in Florida (we live there 6 months out of the year) at a free clinic that serves those who are living within 200 % of the Federal Poverty Level. My second husband and I have started 4 endowment scholarships to other students have access to an education that might not otherwise be able to.  I have received many local, state and national awards for my work with families and victims of trauma.

Please go to Phillis's website to either seek help or help other people.

Skye Nicholson| "The Naked Mind" Empowerment Coach| Ends Alcohol Abuse after 25 Years

Skye Nicholson| "The Naked Mind" Empowerment Coach| Ends Alcohol Abuse after 25 Years

Skye Nicholson is a certified 'This Naked Mind' Empowerment Coach, and founded Soul’s Truth Coaching in 2021. After making the decision in January 2018 to put an end to 25 years of alcohol abuse, Skye began her ongoing journey of healing and self-acceptance. She coaches women to their self-created goals around personal empowerment, alcohol use or anxiety reduction, by providing tactics and tools to take charge of their thoughts. Skye's two published books, Unexpected Alchemy: Poems of Addiction and Awakening, and Elemental Alchemy: A Guided Journal for Transformation are available on Amazon. She lives in Columbus, Indiana, with her husband and two children.

First Book|: Unexpected Alchemy, poet Skye Nicholson shares her journey of recovery—and empowerment—after ending 25 years of alcohol abuse. Her poems are filled with soaring language, fraught memories, and poignant images of motherhood and self-acceptance. Readers will discover a remarkable empathy from poems that effortlessly invite nature, relationships, and presence. Paired with artful designs by Indie illustrator Cheryl Liz Byers, Skye's words evoke a courageous and raw honesty that illuminates how decades of addiction and shame can dissolve through vulnerability, compassion and self-love.

Journal: Elemental Alchemy: A Journal For Transformation-This is a place for you to tell your story.
Wherever it began, and wherever it may take you, your story is both your legacy and your future. Writing down the words that weave these threads of your own personal journey is, like the ancient process of alchemy, a special kind of magic.
The journal is divided into four parts, each guided by one of ancient elements and the alchemical wisdom associated with it. Following the prompts in order will guide you through the universal process of transformation, so that you may discover your truth and live unfolded and empowered like the butterfly.

Arizona Lindsey| Supporting Mental Health Awareness through her Music

Arizona Lindsey| Supporting Mental Health Awareness through her Music

26 yr old pop country recording artist, producer, actress, and mental health advocate Arizona Lindsey has most recently released her highly anticipated new album "The Process".

On September 27th of this past year, Arizona released "Worth the Fight"; An empowering pop rock song featuring legendary artist Darryl McDaniels of RunDMC. From homelessness to winning the Gold Coast Arts Center’s 'Your Big Break' Competition, Arizona represents resilience and tenacity as she uses her platform to de-stigmatize mental health. "Sky"| Struggles all His Life and How they are Conquered

"Sky"| Struggles all His Life and How they are Conquered

https://www.instagram.com/sky2fy

My name is Schuyler. I was born and raised in Florida, graduating from FSU in late 2021. I grew up in a home with a single mother who did everything she could to raise me well. The two of us have faced plenty of trials and tribulations, but we are both still standing! I hope my story can help anyone who is facing similar challenges. Everything that this young man suggests for conquering different struggles, are in his own words. Everything that Christy suggests, again, are in her own words. We are not experts. These are things that worked for us.

Sky, as his mom calls him, is around 23 and has gone through more trials than a child, an adolescent, or  young adult would want to go through. From divorced parents to a mother who had an alcohol addiction, to adjusting a big move when his mom remarried, losing his best friend while surfing on a family vacation, He and his mom tackled that together, (his mom has been sober I believe 14 years) I am hoping to interview her when she is ready.

Where did Sky get his strength to endure all the things? His mother is amazing. She too has had all these struggles and more, and so far has never relapsed. She was brought up in a Christian environment just like she has brought up Sky. This all began with her mother and father, which they shared in bringing up Sky all of his life. Sky's grandmother passed away a year ago from Cancer, at the same time his grandfather ad to be put in a safe place for him as his dementia stopped him from being able to take himself and soon after his stepfather passed away from Parkinson's. All in a year's time. This of course was also during our pandemic, which as we all know has made things that more difficult.

The rest of this story, well, you just need to hear. And pardon me jumping in there with my similar stories.

Children Struggling in School after Pandemic Part Two

Melinda and Christy continue to talk about the struggles of children returning to school after shut down from covid.

https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/childdevelopment/positiveparenting/middle.html https://www.unicef19-scale-education-loss-nearly-insurmountable-warns-unicef Christy and co-host finally get to sit down together again and discuss what is happening to school age children  returning to school after the pandemic.  Mellissa has 3 children of her own, so a lot of our story started because of what they were going through but now we look up statistics and see what is really going on out there. As you know, Mental Health Awareness is big! We have also found that some of the mental health disorders stem from childhood experiences or what was traumatic to them. Each person is obviously different, so what is traumatic to you may not be to somebody else and visa versa.  Please remember that we are only here with our own experiences but we will also provide references.  If you need to seek counselling is the Peoria, Il area: https://www.opencounseling.com/united-states/morton/counseling-agency/agape-counseling https://www.betterhelp.com If you want to share your story with us please send an email to strugglesarehard@gmail.com If you have an questions please message Christy at https://www.instagram.com/lifestrugglespodcast or https://www.instagram.com/thechristycollier https://www.instagram.com/mamaweigle

Curley "Boo" Johnson moved to Peoria, Illinois, in 1970 at age 4. SRC won the sectional title and set a school record for wins (26) and a 4th-place finish in the state. Johnson went 3 consecutive games without missing a field goal (21-21). Mike Jaskulski was quoted as saying that "Boo" was the finest ball handler and dribbler he ever coached or saw play at Loras – "The ball was always safe in his hands." Johnson did not just dribble through Dubuque, he earned a degree in marketing at Loras. Loras retired Johnson's #14 jersey on December 10, 1999.[1]

Courtney Chipman| A Fear of Abandonment Leads to Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Courtney Chipman| A Fear of Abandonment Leads to Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Courtney is 33 years young and lives in Orange County, California. She has struggled with mental health issues including OCD, Depression, and Anxiety from a very young age. Her parents divorced when she was 8 months old. Her biological father, although he had visitation rights, rarely exercised them. There were many times when her mother would tell her he was coming to get her for the weekend but then he wouldn't show up. When Courtney was around 5 years old, her mother remarried a wonderful man, who chose a career as a police officer until he retired. She called him dad. They had a very good marriage and Courtney had a sister later on. Life should have been better, and for the most part, it was.
The fear of abandonment set in, even though at the time, she didn't know that's what was going on with her mental state of mind. Her biological father was in and out of jail and was into many drugs and alcohol. Courtney decided to see why her biological father liked alcohol and drugs so much that he chose them over her. And so began her preteen years of drinking. Hmmm. It sort of worked. It eased the emotional pain for a little while.
She started dealing with alcohol and drug addiction at 15. Not even realizing it, she became codependent until she was in her late twenties.
At times, she had been completely addicted to success and other people's approval. For more than half of her life, she used anything outside of herself to fix what felt wrong internally. It wasn't until she got into therapy and rehab that she really started to heal internally and now has been able to have self-love and sobriety.
These as Courtney's words.

Erin Fields| Losing Her Freedom is Her Biggest Life Struggle

Erin Fields| Losing Her Freedom is Her Biggest Life Struggle

Erin Field grew up in central Maine. She went to Goucher College in Maryland and graduated with a bachelor's degree in English. She is 26 years old. She is currently living in Florida. In July of 2017,  she sustained a spinal cord injury at the C5/C6 level when a chimney collapsed on her.  I’m working on going to law school for disability rights and advocacy, which I am very passionate about!

Imagine being a young vibrant college almost college graduate, with everything going for you, and in seconds, while enjoying someone's company your falling in love with and both of you are looking at the beautiful skylights of the city of Boston and within seconds, a chimney falls down on top of your chest and you will never have the freedom of taking care of yourself again. This was not Erin's image of her next couple of years. She was going on to Law school. She and Jack were both going abroad for their majors. Life was going to be so good. Freedom... to take a walk, to drive around for fresh air, to take a shower when you feel gritty.....the littlest things that we all take advantage of are gone. Most of them forever. However, Erin chose not to let those thoughts to chose her realization. She chose to live. She chose to fight. She chose to be positive.

She is still trying to love her new life. And then she remembers that it's not her disabilities, it's her abilities that matter. She is grateful for what she can still do and the strength that she has gained. She is also very grateful for her family, friends, and all the people that she has met along her journey. She's actually glad to still be alive.

Jack is her boyfriend and has been since one week before her injury. Jack chose her. He also chose to be her caretaker after she came home from the hospital. He chose this because he fell in love with her, not because of any guilt or a sense of duty. Everyone has a right to their own opinion but in this episode, I am going to ask you to skip over this if you have any negative thoughts about Jack's decision to stay with Erin...or Erin's decision to let him.

This story of a Life Struggle is in Erin's words. Please respect them.

Mike Fiore| Turning his Mess into a Message

Michael fiore CEO and founder at INSPIRE 2 INSPIRE, partner with THE SOBER APP. Used and abused drugs for 20 years on November 3rd successfully detox off of methadone after 12 years. Went as high as 140 mlg. Graduated treatment on May 10th and moved from nyc to California to pursue a career as a motivational speaker. From inside treatment started a non-profit and got full incorporated, went on tour speaking and started a clothing line. Turned his mess into a message and lives by 2 mantras, "we are responsible for the effort not the outcome" & "perspective equals potential". Mike and I talk about all the years of alcohol and drug abuse. Where does it start? Is it genetic or did he become addicted after finding out that alcohol helped him feel better about himself. When that wasn't enough, the drugs took over. Each time, the current drug stopped working and so he had to turn to stronger things.  Both his mother and father were Herroin addicts as he was growing up and contracted aids. He lost both of them. His father went first, but when his mother was dying last year, she asked him to quit his drugs. That was when he decided to do something about it. What was his biggest life struggle? How did he conquer it or how is he conquering it? Listen on Spotify, Apple podcast, Google podcast, Podbean, Stitcher and Amazon Music. This story is Mike's words and opinions. Toni Becker| Anorexia, Body Dysmorphia, Alcohol and Drug Addiction. Recovery

Toni Becker| Anorexia, Body Dysmorphia, Alcohol and Drug Addiction. Recovery

We start out talking about body image and how that impacted both of us at a young age. When Toni was growing up she felt intimated by her family and a friend of her mother didn't help the situation. Both were constantly putting down her. Her family was all beautiful and she felt pressure starting around the age of 8 to live up to their standards. This led to her eating disorders: anorexia and bulimia.

At about 12 years old she started drinking at family functions, for example, she was Jewish and would go to family bar mitzvahs, where drinking alcohol was a normal thing for children to do. By 14, she was drinking pretty regularly.

But.... things started really getting out of control when she was going to the University. She began using Meth and a drug called "cat". She even tried running her friends over & ending up on a golf course and that's when she went into rehab for the first time. As in so many cases, she relapsed as soon as she got out. She used whatever it took to get her drugs including one time, assaulting her mom, lying about her brother assaulting her, and then calling her dad and lied about what was happening. Her father knew that she wasn't committed to recovering and sent her into a real rehab. A longer-term, a place she couldn't just leave. Finally, she got some help. She finished rehab, then went into a halfway house and then a sober house. She is now a sponsor herself. She is wanting to help others by sharing her story.

She has started a YouTube channel and shares her stories there. Now her mission is to destigmatize anorexia and bulimia. She still struggles with body dysmorphia and is working on this every day.

Dusty Simmers| Life Struggles and Equine Therapy

Dusty Simmers is definitely a woman on a mission. Winning all the life struggles that have been thrown at her has been a blessing to her mission. She now has the experience to help other women around the world become their bold and authentic selves. That's a positive way to look back at a life of hell. And that's exactly what she is doing.

Dusty understands the horrible effects that trauma can have on a person's life and because of that, she has chosen her future in helping other women to find the courage to be somebody else instead of a man's punching bag. With her story, you will hear all the manipulation the man she thought loved her, would use, along with his wife, to try and destroy her. However, she stood up and fought back for her life and her son. It wasn't easy though.

On the brink of suicide, Dusty tells us how she overcame abusive relationships, drug addiction, giving birth to her first baby in the shower, and then losing her second baby after a 3-month fight for his life and then having her baby's father and his wife, fight her for custody of her 18-month-old son. Listen to how her horses kept her going, emotionally and sometimes financially as she overcomes these life struggles.

Jason LaChance| Cutting to Cover Emotional Pain

Jason LaChance| Cutting to Cover Emotional Pain

What happens when you are going through puberty and you are depressed and feel like you don't fit in anywhere? Your dad left your home when you were a young child and your mom was working many hours to take care of her two boys, alone. It's not that she doesn't love you, she's trying to do all the things. Even though you don't blame her, the fact that you were miserable was still there. So one day, you decide to take a blade and start drawing on your arm. Did it hurt? Hell yes. But.....you discovered that during that time, at that moment, the emotional pain was gone. That my friends is when Jason found his first way, on his own, to take care of that emotional pain. Disclaimer: We are in no way promoting this behavior or any other negative behavior in this story. "With a family history of addiction, the patterns were set early that he would fall prey to. In this podcast. Christy and Jason talk about his childhood behaviors and that brings in Christy's children's behaviors and what she learned what was so important was to "not be their friend" but a parent who listen's and checks on them and set boundaries. It's hard not to be liked by your children. But in then end, they will be grateful. Listen to the full story on our podcast. Jason takes great pleasure in helping people with " all the things." Tim's Biggest Life Struggle is himself.

Tim's Biggest Life Struggle is himself.

I don't think that I have met a man who has gone through so much mental and physical pain and has ended with so many accomplishments in a year's time. His struggles began early age with Bipolar. But it was not even a thing then. It wasn't until he was 14 years old that he was finally diagnosed. By then he was self medicating. For 27 years he struggled with drugs and alcohol and even suicide attempts.
What brought him around? His wife finally found him in the basement, with a rope around his neck, standing on a bucket and getting ready to jump off. No it wasn't an attention getter. She had no idea what he was up to. He was just done with the fight. He didn't see any other way to stop the self-hate, low self esteem and feeling disconnected. I'm not going to spoil the rest of this amazing story. You really need to hear his words. Please welcome to our studio...Tim.

Christy and Jennifer Chat About the Daily Life Struggles of Infertility, Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Christy and Jennifer Chat About the Daily Life Struggles of Infertility, Drug and Alcohol Addiction

I met Jennifer through Instagram and after I saw what she was promoting, I immediately knew I wanted her as a guest speaker on my podcast. I get many requests to interview celebrities because people like to know about their lives. And I have interviewed celebrities. They are ordinary people just like you and me. Jennifer is just like you and me. Only to me, each human is extraordinary in their own way.
Jennifer is 47 years old and spent 13 years of her life abusing alcohol and drugs. That doesn't define her. What defines her is her heart and soul and beliefs and what she is doing with her life now.
During her years of abuse she experienced more than any of us should in a life time. She was a victim of violent crime a multiple of times. She was car jacked twice. She was shot in a drug deal gone bad. She was kidnapped at gunpoint, beaten and whipped by a drug dealer and had to have her face reconstructed. (btw...that drug dealer committed homicide while he was on an ankle monitor for her kidnapping, was sentenced four years for her kidnapping and is currently waiting for his trial on the homicide.)
She finally got sober on 07/13/21 after being arrested on her first ever drug charge. She moved to Charleston to live in an Oxford House(sober living) and has been sober for 214 days now. Not because she was court ordered. Not because someone she loved gave her a choice but because she chose to. Remember if it's not our own choice, more than likely it won't last. She went through recovery with the help of a 12 step program.
Since she's been sober she has started two business's. Keto Queen City- an online Keto products store and she believes that Keto has helped her stay sober by curbing her cravings for drugs/alcohol.
Her second business is on :
www.InspiringSobriety.com this is an online recovery and sobriety apparel and gift store.
Her story is real and raw and heartbreaking and yet inspirational. Our chat is long but interesting and helpful. I hope you will take the time to listen and share, wherever you can and to all your friends, asking them to do too.
helpful resources include. AA.com, NA.com and Oxfordhouse.com

Sam Lucania: Author of Just Don't Die has Life Struggles of Addiction and Depression

Sam Lucania: Author of Just Don't Die has Life Struggles of Addiction and Depression

Sam talks to me about his journey to sobriety and his lonely road to self destruction which led to addiction. Let's start by getting some background.

He grew up in New Jersey with a typical childhood. His family ate dinner every night together, went to church on Sundays. His parents remain married. There wasn't any major arguments.  There wasn't any childhood trauma. He was just a high energy kid with a lot of anxiety. He was also depressed and never really felt like he fit in with other kids. At least not the ones that weren't doing drugs or smoking cigarettes or doing drugs and stealing. And because of these things he started finding ways to hide his emotional pain. Starting by drinking at age 12 and running with the wrong crowd there after. It was only better until it wasn't.

Inside this episode you will hear his story. For now, I will give you information that you should share to your school or church and definitely to your friends.

Sam broke his anonymity about his disease on a socio-economic level after his overdose in 2013. He was done hiding because of the stigma surrounding his community and now around the world to know that there is indeed hope in recovery.

Sam relapsed in 2015 and after his arrest they called him a junkie and wanted to lock him up for good. He's not a junkie, he's a person and people are not disposable.

He finally sought help for his substance use disorder for the last time in 2015 and they told him if he got sober and stayed sober that his dreams would become reality.

Well he will be the first to tell you, that was a lie. And here's why.

Sam is living proof that if you get sober and you stay sober, your reality will actually surpass your dreams.

You can hear Sam speak at your schools, (grade schools, high schools, colleges and churches. Wherever people will gather. Allow Sam to bring this life changing message to your community and he guarantees you will say, "it's the best event you ever hosted!"

Life Struggles conquered by Writing

Life Struggles conquered by Writing

https://amzn.to/3HnNiEG - to purchase his book -Sounds Unheard Songs of Home

Chapter 1. Being human is an awkward experience. Chapter 10. Overthinking holds us back. Chapter 66. This poem speaks of a universal search for softness and peace. (Joseph finds his in nature and spirituality, rather than organized religion.

Joseph knew he wanted to be a writer after reading "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros

https://amzn.to/3GpXA5P- to purchase " The House on Mango Street".

He had always written, short pieces, mostly. Like poems, essays and memories. He became a successful painter. That consumes and satisfied him. And then the pandemic hit and he found his time frame opened up and he started taking notes and doing an "autopsy on himself." Yes, that's what he called it. Like ripping open his body and examining all his thoughts and habits etc. A very interesting way of finding yourself and figuring out what is broken and what needs fixed.

His goals as a writer are to celebrate natural beauty around him and also to build. To heal. To find grace. And lend others the same.

Life Struggles in getting Home For the Holidays

Life Struggles in getting Home For the Holidays

Planes, Trains & Automobiles starring Steve Martin and John Candy. A movie of a man trying to get home for Thanksgiving and all the struggles he runs into to get there. In all the struggles is a witty, gritty man who isn't really a criminal but let's just say he will go out of his way to help someone get home for the Holiday. My biggest take of the movie was on not judging a person when you met them. Listen to Melinda describe the movie and both us laughing and sharing. Then as a surprise, I play "Name that Movie" with her.

Information on John Candy and his family was found on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Candy and https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001006/.

I hope this episode gives his wife, Rosemary Hobor, his daughter Jennifer Candy and his son Christopher Candy joy in knowing that we enjoyed their husband and father in several movies and have good memories. Steve Martin still survives and is still starring in movies and making us laugh.
