Episode 178 Emily O'Brien Smuggling to Comeback Snacks

Episode 178 Emily O'Brien Smuggling to Comeback Snacks

She went to prison on a mission. A mission to change herself and a mission to make a difference. She didn't know how she'd make a difference at the time, but she knew she would find something she cared about that would benefit from a purpose driven face-lift.

Coming to prison as a first-time offender was unnerving, and she felt so much anxiety at first. If you think it's hard on the outside to eat a healthy diet, being in prison brings that challenge to the next level. She thinks most people she shared her time with would attest to the fact that food is often a way to combat anxiety and depression. Maintaining a healthy balance is difficult, and when this poses a challenge to your self image it just makes an already depressing situation worse, like adding insult to injury.

It was only a month or so in when she noticed that some of the women were making their own popcorn recipes with the ingredients possible within the food budget. She was instantly struck by how really smart and creative it was. Popcorn was like this simple blank canvas for women of all backgrounds to express themselves through different mixes of spices and other flavours.

A lot of people love popcorn, and it is cheap to buy and goes a long way. It's also so much healthier than baked goods and most of the junk food that was available in the canteen. It is one of those snacks you can eat a lot of when you feel restless and bored and not feel super guilty about it. It’s also a social snack. You usually make a giant bowl of it for you and your friends to share over some conversation, games or watching something on TV. You can also just eat one kernel at a time, the bowl can last for hours, and you do not have to worry about gaining weight. Well…not as much!

So it all sort of all came together at once: She would start a popcorn company that uses quality ingredients and offers unique flavour, some inspired by the very ones we made inside prison. Most of all, one that attempts to remove some of the stigma associated with having a prior conviction, and one that has fun and a sense of humour about itself. The company can give offenders the opportunity and confidence to gain and maintain pro-social employment, keeping the community safer by helping ex-cons refrain from returning to their old ways. It just seemed like all the stars had aligned and overnight it became my mission to build this company. Comeback Snacks - made with conviction!

Episode 174 Johnny Crowder Survivor & Advocate

Johnny Crowder is a 29-year-old suicide/abuse survivor, TEDx speaker, touring musician, mental health and sobriety advocate, and the Founder & CEO of Cope Notes, a text-based mental health platform that provides daily support to users in nearly 100 countries around the world. But in the years leading up to these incredible leaps in advocacy, every day was a battle against schizophrenic hallucinations and suicidal ideation. After a lifetime of resisting professional care and shying away from sharing his story, Johnny’s curiosity flowered, and the healing slowly began. Armed with 10 years of clinical treatment, a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, and a decade of peer support and public advocacy through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Johnny’s youthful vigor for mental health has impacted millions of lives across the globe. Since his first keynote in 2011, Johnny's refreshingly vulnerable and candid perspective has attracted praise from hundreds of outlets, including Upworthy, CNN, and Forbes. Even when commanding a virtual stage or touring with his metal band, Prison, his infectious positivity and firsthand experience with multiple mental illnesses (ranging from bipolar disorder and PTSD to OCD and beyond) uniquely equip him to provide realistic, yet hopeful insight into the pains of hardship with authenticity, levity, and unconventional wit.

Episode 173 Mike Laughlin Canada's Only Amputee Firefighter

Episode 173 Mike Laughlin Canada's Only Amputee Firefighter

Today we have Mike Laughlin who is Canada's only above knee amputee firefighter! He has such a remarkable story and you will not want to miss this one. He is a two time major crash and trauma survivor from the Kingston, Ontario area!

He has a knack for adrenaline fuelled sports including 4 wheeling, snowmobiling, dirt biking, and riding his Harley!

As a farm boy from Joyceville, Mike Laughlin thought he was invincible. “Growing up I threw hay, played every sport imaginable, and drove my dirt bike hard and fast,” he says, “but I never broke a bone in my body until my first accident.”

Mike is a two-time survivor of traumatic injury. The first, a snowmobile accident on Loughborough Lake in the winter of 2007, resulted in his left leg being snapped at the femur, “dangling like rubber.”

“When I finally made it to the Emergency Department at KGH that night,” says Mike. “I didn’t know the hospital would be home for the next month, or that I would leave with so much metal: a titanium femur, a titanium kneecap, 33 pins and screws holding my tibia, fibula, knee and femur together, a titanium forearm and 11 screws holding that together.”

Nearly ten years later, in June 2016, Mike found himself fighting for his life again on Loughborough Lake when a deer unexpectedly darted in front of his motorcycle. “I remember the sound of the muffler scraping the ground, the feeling of the back tire hitting the gravel shoulder and the moment she just shot out from under me.

“It’s hard to describe all the thoughts that go through your mind when you’re lying in a ditch, with a broken body.” says Mike. “My instincts as a firefighter took over. I flipped the Harley off of me.” When he looked down, Mike’s right leg was gone. “My tibia and fibula were in the ground like lawn darts. I threw my helmet up on the road so a passing car might see me. I made a tourniquet, pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed my fire department.”

Episode 172 Emma Bryant Comedy & Mental Health

This episode is with British comedian and actress Emma Bryant, she has gone through many tragedies, some being extremely toxic and abusive relationships!

It was through experiencing personal tragedy in the form of a severely abusive relationship that she further realized her true passion was not for posing and looking pretty in front of the camera, but in fact for entertaining, and making people laugh. Through her many contacts gained through her modelling career and previous theatre training, she secured small supporting roles in Season 4 of Game Of Thrones, Brit feature film “FILTH”, which also stars James McAvoy. She soon went on to undertake roles in a feature film acting alongside the late Eastenders star Leslie Grantham (and performed a stand up routine at the premiere in a tribute to him), and she also starred alongside Bond villain and iconic British actor, Steven Berkoff, in the first British virtual reality feature film, which was a huge honour!

She currently works as an actress, comedian and media spokesperson for Refuge UK. She is very much looking forward to being a part of many more exciting projects in the near future!

Episode 171 Dan Karaty Dancing Through Life

Episode 171 Dan Karaty Dancing Through Life

Dan Karaty is one of the hottest entertainers working today. In addition to choreographing films like Disney's "Prom," “Music and Lyrics” with Drew Barrymore, and “Did You Hear About The Morgans” with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, Karaty currently serves as a Judge around the world on ratings hits "So You Think You Can Dance," "X Factor," "Everybody Dance Now," "My Name Is...," "Holland’s Got Talent," "The Ultimate Dance Battle" and "Belgium's Got Talent." Karaty's incredible choreography and thought-provoking critiques have made him a worldwide fan favourite.

Karaty was born just outside New York City to Broadway veterans Tom and Jane Karaty so it's no surprise dance is a huge part of his life. Although his Broadway roots remain a tremendous influence in his life, he chose sneakers and hip-hop over Broadway ballads! Karaty's unique path allowed him to infuse his work with the spirit of classic Broadway inspirations like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and trailblazers in the hip-hop and pop culture like Michael Jackson.

Karaty then branched out on his own, choreographing Jessica Simpson's “Irresistible” and “Little Bit” music videos and serving as Artistic Director for her 2001 World Tour. He also worked with Kylie Minogue on many of her television appearances, as well as a long list of cutting-edge artists like Justin Timberlake and Usher. Although he quickly became known for his work in the pop music genre, Karaty broadened his reach by choreographing ground-breaking commercials for iPod, Best Buy, Mattel, Miller and many more.

Karaty's experience, combined with his gift for comedy, allowed him to move into the film industry where he choreographed “Music and Lyrics,” “Malibu’s Most Wanted,” "Did You Hear About The Morgans” and Disney's 2011 release, "Prom."

Beyond his role as a Judge on T.V. series around the world, Karaty has his sights set on producing and directing films, television and theater. He is currently in development on several film and television projects and even a Broadway production of his own!"

With his wife Natasha, Karaty has two children, a daughter named Quinn, and a son named Daniel. (Wikipedia)

Episode 163 Eric Kussin Same Here Global

Episode 163 Eric Kussin Same Here Global

Same Here Global was founded by 15-year professional sports executive, Eric Kussin, bringing together Athletes, Celebrities, and Expert Practitioners. After a successful career that started at the NBA League Office, and led to senior management positions with a number of professional sports teams, Eric’s mental health took a sudden and rapid decline.

Due to unresolved personal life traumas he failed to appropriately address at a younger age – life experiences he was unaware were affecting his mental health – Eric developed a severe bout of PTSD, along with symptoms of anxiety and depression. This fall came essentially “out of nowhere” and left him almost permanently in bed, and with severe cognitive impairment, for just over two and a half years. Once he found a way to climb out of his abyss, he vowed to spend the rest of his life focused on changing the global conversation through mental health advocacy.

Episode 162 Drew Chernisky Lifting the Fog!

Episode 162 Drew Chernisky Lifting the Fog!

Drew Chernisky launched Lift the Fog in 2021 as a community for those who may be suffering in silence through traumatic brain injury (TBI) recovery as well as cultivating awareness and compassion of this complex injury.

Her inspiration to start this blog stems from her own gut-wrenching, painful and heartbreaking recovery that is still ongoing almost four years later. While this is a means to express herself, she is hoping it can be a connecting ground to others experiencing the same.

She suffered a TBI on October 13, 2018, in an ice hockey game. From that day forward, her life has been turned upside down and has not relented since. For her, she didn’t realize just how good she had it until it all came crumbling down.

As her vision is still very much affected, launching this and writing has been an extremely challenging task to do but it is her own personal dedication and commitment to reaching her end goal of healing, of achieving some sort of normalcy.

She has put her entire being into writing. If you have personally been affected by TBI in any form or if you or a loved one trying to gain more understanding, she is deeply hoping her blog can be of benefit to you.

Let’s break the stigma and lift the fog. Together.

Tales From The Janitors Closet FT Bills

"That means you win. And it's not about being number one. It's about succeeding personally, in your own eyes reaching a goal that's attainable every time and not to set it to be so easy or I held the door for this person or, oh, I, got all the way through my song. It's really personal goals that give you that sense of victory."

In this episode I sit down with independent artist from Missouri, USA! Bills is a great underground artist who works a 9-5 as a janitor at a local school, and travels around putting on his own shows and promoting other artists as well. He is also apart of a band called SPECTRUM as well and you can find all of the links to his music below!
