How did I pursue being an artist with my back against the wall
A little about me…
I am a graduate of Murray State University. Currently working on my Masters in Psychology. Wanting to infuse my love for art into helping people achieve their goals. I currently work for West Kentucky Community and Technical College as Success Coach helping students 18-24 to achieve their career goals.
I am the owner of Cora Creative Studio. I have always had a love for art and writing. I have been a writer since the age of 7. I would get lost in books and create stories to pass time when I was younger. In 2012 I met a woman that inspired me to pick back up and focus my love of art so I began making jewelry and then started vending events. I still make jewelry from time to time but my love for art has expanded. During Covid my daughter taught herself how to do digital art and refine her drawing skills and became a refined artist. During that time as well, I entered in an Art show at the Yeiser center for POC and didn’t realize I could have entered my poetry writing and for the first time I created 3 paintings which opened the door to becoming an acrylic artist. I work with many different mediums including digital which opened the door to where I am now with my journals. I also host Paint Parties where I use created, sourced, and digital art. I am able to blend my love for art and writing. October 1st, I move Cora Creative Studio into a building locally in Paducah. I will be able to have Paint Parties, networking events, Art shows and more. Eventually I want to support another unseen local artist by curating their artwork in my studio as well. I am also a small business coach and I have helped several in the area see their vision. I want to see us all win and grow. I also suffer from a Chronic Condition called Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis and delving into art has helped me cope with my condition. I hope this helps some with the questions.
How do I be more present in my families life while working?
For years I had felt as though I was meant to do something big. It was as if my soul was whispering to me the lessons I had learned through the life experiences I had overcome were not meant for me alone. I felt as though I should share my story. I didn’t know where or how, but I felt this was part of the purpose of my life's journey.
Along with these whisperings, there was doubt.
Doubt in my ability.
Doubt that I could truly help people with my story.
Doubt that I should be dreaming of an influence outside of my home.
Then I saw a family movie that contained content I felt was grooming children for sexual abuse.
I had a very small platform and from it, I shared my thoughts on this movie and the dangers it could pose to impressionable children. With vulnerability, I shared that the lens through which I could see this was that of a survivor of child abuse.
My article quickly went viral, lighting up conversations among moms around the world.
As a result of the outcry my article incited, the movie was pulled from theaters to be edited for content. This had never before occurred.
I again felt the tug, that my words and my story could be used to help others.
