Finding Sobriety Through Community with Winged Victory

Finding Sobriety Through Community with Winged Victory

Winged Victory spent years drinking but discovered sobriety without AA or rehab. She grew up in a loving family but her parents divorced when she was young and her dad was soon out of the picture.  Winged Victory was raised by her mum and they experienced a family tragedy when her brother died when she was 17. As Winged Victory grew up she became a musician working her way up to play in the Symphony Orchestra. She loved her career and didn't actually drink much when she was younger because of her dication to her job.

The True Rags to Riches Story with Dr Robb Kelly

The True Rags to Riches Story with Dr Robb Kelly

Robb was a doctor living in a million-dollar house with his wife and kids. He drove a Porsche 911 and earned well over a quarter of a million dollars a year. If most of us work up in his shoes we would think we had wone the lottery. But this wasn't the full story.

Robbs drinking was worse than ever and he would blackout, not for hours or days but for weeks and he couldn't remember what had happened. On top of the lost days, his violence was getting worse to the point where he stabbed his wife three times because she wouldn't let him drink. He was heading in a direction he could have never imagined.

One by one everyone abandoned him. They all walked away, his wife, kids and friends. He lost everything including his doctor's license. When he finally woke up from the drunken haze it was 6 months later when he was homeless sleeping under bus shelters.

The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life with Laura McKowen

The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life with Laura McKowen

On this Podcast, I had the honour of talking to Laura McKowen author of “We are the luckiest: The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life”. Laura shared her story and insights from her own journey to #recovery and #sobriety and we discussed the #benefitsofsoberlife.

One thing that makes the most sense to her about addiction is that “Addiction is anything you do or continue to do despite the negative consequences”.

Laura went from drinking somewhat problematically at the beginning to very problematically for most of the time she was drinking. Her alcohol problems started in her late teens and went on for almost twenty years when she got sober at the age of 37. Although she did other drugs as well, alcohol was always the first choice for her.

Labels Of Addiction With Liv Pennelle

Labels Of Addiction With Liv Pennelle

On this Podcast we go inside addiction to talk about #addiction #recovery and #howweviewaddiction

“You might pretend to be functioning, but you’re still using in the background”

Liv believes addiction is a coping mechanism stemming from complex trauma. In her teens she started to drink, smoke weed and later on using speed.  Like so many others she pretended to be high functioning whilst using alcohol and drugs to try and cope with things - a false promise that substances can’t deliver.  As she graduated her drinking and using had progressed into an addiction and she found herself doing things she wouldn’t normally do.

“It was awful - I had no memory of the night before, I checked if I was covered in bruises, I checked through my phone to see what I had done the night before”

She had lost her job, several friends and her family wasn’t really talking to her anymore. She was totally isolated and the age of 32 she couldn’t take anymore.  After a huge binge drink up she reached out for help and attended an AA meeting...

This caused Dr Meyers to go on to create an intervention program that is now used worldwide to engage resistant substance users and encourage them to enter treatment. Why You Over Eat And What To Do About It With Glenn Livingston

Why You Over Eat And What To Do About It With Glenn Livingston

On this #thinking episode we go inside addiction with Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. author of the book Never Binge Again™. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.
