Animal welfare week - dogs and frustration

Animal welfare week - dogs and frustration

Rebecca said:

I have always loved animals and started my first pet sitting business at my parents hotel when I was 8. Since then, I've worked in various animal businesses and spent the last 6 years doing animal based courses, with my last one being a masters in clinical animal behaviour at Lincoln. The reason I've decided to go into this industry is because of my current dog, my staffy, Dug. We rescued him from a puppy farm and since then he has been fear aggressive with other dogs. I've always wanted to learn more about his behaviour and how to help him and I found it fascinating! He's now a lot better. We still have a lot of progress to make but the bond I've created with him is amazing. If I can help other dog and cat owners learn to understand their pets and create that bond, I would be very happy!

A pet's mental and physical wellbeing with vet Vicki O'Gorman

A pet's mental and physical wellbeing with vet Vicki O'Gorman

Obesity is now a key welfare concern for veterinarians. The PDSA Paw reports states that 8% of dog owners say their pet has gained weight during lockdown. This figure is higher than cat (6%) and rabbit owners (3%). We caught up with Vicki to discuss this important topic.

Vicki is a small animal vet, currently working for a charity she has been practicing for 8 years. Vicki is studying towards a MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour. As well as all of these titles, Vicki is a wife, mum to three free-spirited (feral) children ( Vicki's words hehe) , and lifelong companion to a complex pup, Molly, their 11.5 yr. old JRT.

Here are links and references to what Vicki and Lisa spoke about:

6 - PC Dave Wardell and Fabulous Finn tell us about Finn's Law - Part 2

PLEASE NOTE: If you look up photo's of fabulous Finn you may see photo's of his injuries which can be upsetting, but he's fighting fit and loving treats and the retired life now.

Finn is a very special dog. When he was working in the line of duty with Dave he was disgustingly stabbed by the suspect. Unfortunately, at that time, it wasn't seen as a criminal offence to hurt a service animal and the attacker walked away from court with no penalty.

The injustice of this resulted in thousands of people signing a petition called 'Finn's Law.'

The Queen 👑 gave her royal assent to Finn's Law in 2019 which resulted in an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act that specifically protects police dogs and horses while they are on duty in England and Wales.🐕 🐴

Fabulous Finn has been awarded the following accolades:

🏅The International Fund for Animal Welfare "Animal of the Year Award" in a ceremony at the House of Lords.

🎖️The PDSA Gold Medal "for life-saving devotion to duty, despite being grievously injured while preventing a violent criminal from evading arrest".

🏅The Kennel Club's "Friends for Life" prize at Crufts.

What a special boy.

We discussed #FinnsLawPart2 over video call and how it's helping to raise awareness and asking the government to consider increasing sentences for those who have committed shocking animal cruelty crimes from the current paltry 6 months to 5 years. Help by contacting your MP and letting Finn know so he can add it to his map. (K9Finn via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram):
