LTN Presents: "Sherlock Holmes: The Musgrave Ritual"

LTN Presents: "Sherlock Holmes: The Musgrave Ritual"

Sherlock Holmes is one of these most often portrayed fictional characters, so of course, the Little Theatre of Norfolk had to give it a shot.  The script for this production of “The Musgrave Ritual” was acquired from the Generic Radio Workshop. It was part of a series from Nigel Bruce(Watson) and Basil Rathbone(Holmes). The original episode with Bruce and Rathbone aired in December 1939.

This episode was recorded with vintage studio techniques, including live foley, in the style of radio dramas from the 1930s, before the advent of television. People used to gather around the radio and listen to "Jack Benny", "The Shadow", "Judy Canova", and "Escape!" Now you can relive the Golden Days of Radio, and enjoy a cracking good story to boot! Listen with the lights off and headphones on, if you dare!

Is it Theatre? Technological Interventions in a Pandemic

Is it Theatre? Technological Interventions in a Pandemic

Lisa and BA sit down to discuss how technology is assisting in keeping the performing arts alive during this necessary time of social distancing. Specifically, they had just watched Miranda: A Steampunk VR Opera, and it was pretty freaking cool! Miranda was put on by the LUMA Festival, and some of what they were mentioning was found here at their website. Oh, and as promised, anyone looking to host a Script Club can go to this link to fill out the form so that our coordinators can work with you to set one up!

Our Community Feature today is Dwayne Yancey, the playwright who wrote LTN’s current (if you are listening to this in November of 2020) streaming production, Red Moon Rising in the East- get your tickets here if the stream is still running when you find us! You can check him out at his website: dwayneyancey.com, or on Facebook as Dwayne Yancey, Instagram: @Dwayne.Yancey, and Twitter: @DwayneYancey.

You can also leave us a voicemail at 757-632-3281 or email us at info@ltnonline.org to talk to us about stuff, and as long as it’s under 3 minutes, we might feature it on a future episode. Happy Halloween Part One: Partying with @ThatHalloweenBro

Today Chris and BA host James Bryan, Hampton Roads local, and the creative talent behind @thathalloweenbro on Instagram, or if you aren’t on Instagram, https://thathalloweenbro.com/ will work as well. We may have even convinced him to create a @thathalloweenbro TikTok… we shall see. James was also nice enough to share with us a few drink recipes, so if you are planning on celebrating a socially distanced Halloween night (or week, or month, it’s the apocalypse, do what makes you happy…) you still have time to pick up the ingredients!

Our community feature this week is Nicholas Thornburg, who told us a short ghost story to warm us up for our next Halloween episode! You can find him on Facebook and Instagram @nicholasthornburg, and Twitter @nic_thornburg.

You can leave us a voicemail at 757-632-3281 to tell us your ghost story, talk to us further about anything we’ve mentioned on the podcast, tell us more about the gig economy, or anything else for that matter, as long as it’s under 3 minutes. Chutes and Ladders: The Relationship Between Professional and Community Theatre

Chutes and Ladders: The Relationship Between Professional and Community Theatre

Today Nina and BA host special guest Nicholas Thornburg, who started his theatrical career right here at the Little Theatre of Norfolk, and has since taken his career path into the professional performing arts. Together they discuss the twists and turns that come with moving between professional and volunteer gigs, skills needed to survive as a professional (which are also useful to volunteers), and throw in a good deal of reminiscing about those fun experiences that happen while working in the performing arts that make you realize that you wouldn’t be able to work in any other career. You can find him on Facebook and Instagram @nicholasthornburg, and Twitter @nic_thornburg.
Our community feature this week is Jim Bulleit, who shares his most requested song “Catastropic Thinking”. You can find him on Facebook @jimbulleitmusic, and also sometimes find him at Zeiders American Dream Theater- he worked with them on some of their virtual offerings at the beginning of the pandemic. The cartoon which was the inspiration for this week’s offering can be found here.

You can leave us a voicemail at 757-632-3281 to tell us more about your experiences with the gig economy (or anything else for that matter, as long as it’s under 3 minutes). Follow the theater on Facebook @LittleTheatreNorfolk and Instagram @Little_Theatre_Norfolk for updates on all of our digital offerings!

B-Side! Opera 201: Voice Parts and Bicycles

As promised, here is your B-Side - BONUS EPISODE!

Nina and BA continue their conversation with Lisa Hogan, who explains different voice parts in the Opera world (yeah, we had NO idea it was this complicated either). BA and Wesley continue their conversation about The Thomas Jefferson Hour, and Wesley tells us about what it was like to be a bicycle delivery person in a pandemic.

Also, a reminder... that isn't a dirty word we are using. It's German for box.  #ILearnedSomethingNewThisRecording

Opera 101: It isn't Musical Theater

Opera 101: It isn't Musical Theater

Today we introduce yet another new host, Lisa Hogan, who is here to talk to us about how one becomes a trained opera singer! We cover a bit about what opera is, and how it differs from musical theater. Our community feature is Wesley Cheney from the podcast “Tell Me About Your Bike”, though we talked more about playing the ukulele than about either of our bikes!

Lisa Hogan can be found on TikTok @eevahh (check out her duet here), Wesley Cheney can be found on Instagram @WesCheney, and don’t forget to subscribe to “Tell Me About Your Bike”, which you can find here: https://tellmeaboutyourbike.buzzsprout.com/.

Follow the theater on Facebook @LittleTheatreNorfolk and Instagram @Little_Theatre_Norfolk for updates on all of our digital offerings!

Stay tuned next week for episode 6B, which will cover an entire discussion about voice parts that I just couldn’t get to fit while making the podcast a reasonable length, along with some awesome outtakes from Wesley and BA’s conversation.
