Reflections

By Liz Mills

A poetry and storytelling free-flow on those reflections I can't quite shift out my mind. A reminder that thoughts and emotions are transient and the way I feel about the tales I tell may have completely changed before the editing process has even ended.

Episode 5: Impolite Invitations

Episode 5: Impolite Invitations

This reflections episode is taken from my performance for The Take Back: Taking Back Park Life spoken word event on 13/6/21. It is about the kind of invitations we frequently get, those that recur especially seasonally. The ones where people believe it's polite to invite you but you're not really invited (or welcome for that matter). So, if we decided to be honest it would be an impolite invitation. Alongside this, episode 5 refers to accountability, protection and false promises - similar to these false invites.

Episode 4: Narrator's Blues

Episode 4: Narrator's Blues

This episode of my monthly poetry podcast series is a reflection on something that has become a huge focus in my isolation experience. Part of this is about the disjunction between rest and unrest. My peace being invaded; a retreat to the inside since the outside world poses threats (and unfortunately the most scary one doesn't seem to be covid-19 but something I have been aware of my whole life). Trigger warning on this episode: the focus is on catcalling, dreams/nightmares, conscious and subconscious. The end 'reflection on my reflection' is statements of some of the 25 cat-callers I encountered over the few weeks prior to creation of this episode. It was happening so often that I decided to count these. The poem itself has very little detail and is more about peace in nature and how the male gaze doesn't allow for this.

My artwork for this episode is also slightly different as I felt my photography of this peony looks a bit like a vulva - representing womanhood as in this episode.

Episode 3: Seasons

Episode 3: Seasons

Welcome to episode 3 of my podcast Reflections! This series is made up of stories/poems that are inspired by my day to day life and reflections. This episode was originally recorded in the new year of 2020 but released during isolation re covid-19 so the themes in this episode relate to both of these events. Seasons is a pondering on how humans complain but how the weather might respond if it could talk too. This led me to think about beginnings and endings and therefore, choice. I recommend that with this episode, you make a list or draw a picture or listen to music (whatever your method) of things you are grateful for and what changes might benefit a state of renewal in your mind.

Episode 2: Sunshine

Episode 2: Sunshine

Welcome to episode 2 of my podcast Reflections! This series is made up of stories/poems that are inspired by my day to day life and reflections. This is a story about the sunshine glowing from within each one of us. The recurring theme of my Reflections is the transience of thoughts and feelings since I don't plan these poems but record my thoughts and emotions of that exact moment. So by the time they're uploaded the meaning my change (although not in this episode!).

Episode 1: A Sad Celebration

Episode 1: A Sad Celebration

Welcome to the first episode of my Reflections series. This first storytelling/poetry piece is an echo of my first ever performance. This series is about the freedom of thought, emotion and therefore poetry as it changes in every moment. The final part of this poem was recorded 2 weeks after the rest, having reflected on my Reflections. Some bits my voice wavers etc I intentionally left this in, and left it raw so that you could truly feel the emotion with me in the very moment these thoughts came to mind.
Again, music, poetry, production etc - all by me.

The photography used from this series is from a previous art project I created on the connections between literature and nature. All music is my own, all content and production also by me. Now sit back and relax as you listen to my Reflections.

Reflections Episode 1 Teaser

Reflections Episode 1 Teaser

Welcome to the teaser for the first episode of my poetry/storytelling series: Reflections. This first episode is an echo of my first ever performance. This series is about the freedom of thought, emotion and therefore poetry as it changes in every moment. The final part of this poem was recorded 2 weeks after the rest, having reflected on my 'Reflections'. In some moments, my voice wavers - I intentionally left this in so that you could truly feel the emotion with me in the very moment these thoughts came to mind. Thinking about thoughts and emotion in a free flow of poetry, allows us to process events in our life from the small to the larger moments. Facts and details might stay the same but the way we feel about them, or our beliefs that derive from these events, may have completely shifted or changed even just moments after we develop an initial response. Poetry, Production and Music by Me.
