You probably think you have a pretty good idea of what mentorship is and isn't.

I did, too, until I had the opportunity sit down with Dr. Deborah Heiser, CEO and founder of The Mentorship Project.

I learned how true mentorship is distinct from coaching or advisory roles and its five key components: generativity, a willing recipient, intrinsic motivation, meaningful connection, and a clear goal.

Dr. Heiser shares insightful real-world examples, including stories from astronauts and tech pioneers, to illustrate how mentorship can be both informal and impactful.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out, this episode will inspire you to engage in mentorship in everyday life. Tune in to redefine what mentorship means and how it can enrich your personal and professional journey.

Dr. Deborah Heiser is the CEO/Founder of The Mentor Project, author of The Mentorship Edge, and an Applied Developmental Psychologist. 273. Overcoming Back Pain with Amanda Harris

80% of people will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and for many people, that pain is chronic.

I'm joined today by Exercise Physiologist and lower back pain specialist, Amanda Harris to talk about what makes back pain unique, how we can overcome it, and what we can do to prevent it in the first place.

Amanda HarrisBeing mentored by and actively collaborating with some of the top surgeons, neurologists, manual medicine physicians, and physical therapists in the Mid-Atlantic over the past 25 years has given me a unique perspective on how the human body “should” move and how that movement can also “heal”. By identifying faulty movement patterns, and using gentle movement and exercise to correct them, we can free ourselves from back pain, and go on to live healthy, active lives. I also have a Master's Degree (M.Ed.) in Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia, am a certified Medical Exercise Specialist through the Medical Exercise Training Institute in Houston TX, and am a certified RedCord Active Specialist through RedCord International.

271. Embracing Discomfort and Achieving the Extraordinary as an "Ordinary" Woman: Lessons from Ultramarathon Running with Crystal Clark

271. Embracing Discomfort and Achieving the Extraordinary as an "Ordinary" Woman: Lessons from Ultramarathon Running with Crystal Clark

Have you ever had a goal other people thought was crazy?

In Crystal Clark's case, that was running 160 miles in the Sahara desert (among many other ultra-endurance feats)!

Ultra runners aren't supe human but what they learn about themselves and become in pursuit of their goals can make them seem that way.

Crystal is joining me today to share how ordinary people can do the extraordinary.

I know you'll love it even if you have zero interest in running unless something is chasing you!

Crystal is an ultra runner, mom, and wife who has completed over 25 ultramarathons, earning eight podium finishes along the way. One of her most notable accomplishments is completing the Marathon des Sables, a grueling 257km (160-mile) stage race across the Sahara Desert, often referred to as one of the hardest races on Earth.

Despite these extraordinary achievements, Crystal describes herself as an ordinary woman who balances her passion for running with working full time at a large nonprofit and managing the responsibilities of family life. She didn’t grow up an athlete—she even came close to failing gym class more than once—but her journey into running later in life is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and embracing challenges.

She shares her story in the hopes of inspiring others to step out of their comfort zones, follow their passions, and discover their own potential—whether in running or other pursuits. Follow her journey on Instagram @SeeCrystalRun, where she offers an authentic glimpse into her training, races, reflections, and the balance of chasing big dreams while staying grounded in everyday life.
