3 Reasons Why You're Procrastinating

3 Reasons Why You're Procrastinating

I struggle with procrastination a lot, and it makes me feel like I'm just lazy leading on to feeling worthless. I dunno if you're lazy or not, but there's more reasons for procrastination than that, and you should be aware of them and how to overcome them, and that's what this episode is all about.

You’ve got to get it done, whatever “it” is, but you keep putting it off, feeling entirely unmotivated. Procrastination is a deadly barrier to creativity, so let’s look at three reasons we procrastinate and solutions to overcoming them.

What I Learned Photographing a 5k in Harsh Sunlight

What I Learned Photographing a 5k in Harsh Sunlight

I photographed the first 5k to Fight Human Trafficking held at my alma mater Cornerstone University. It was organized by a friend I met there, Katie McNabb (who was also a guest on the show), and a couple of her friends.

This was an event to raise funds for their former youth pastor who’s now a missionary in Thailand with an organization that works to free people, mostly young girls, from being trafficked and sold, so I was glad to be a part of it.

This is another event where I’ve been trying to learn to take photo and video at the same time, still struggling with getting proper exposure. Another new thing that I tried for this was shooting with two bodies during the race.

These were both good experiences, but I want to help you bypass the hard parts with what I learned from this experience. Take a listen and level up!

How to Photograph Multiple Harsh Lighting Conditions

How to Photograph Multiple Harsh Lighting Conditions

Today, I’m breaking down how to photograph an event with three major, and very different, lighting conditions:

Indoors, outdoor sunny, and outdoor shade.

I definitely made a bunch of mistakes with this event and learned a lot, so I want to help you skip the making mistakes part and go right to the learning part!

First though, I need your opinion on something. I started this podcast very broad, covering the whole of creativity as a focus for the show.

I realized that’s way too much and I don’t know enough to make that podcast, and so I decided to focus on just photography and that’s where we’ve been at for the past couple episodes.

Since It’s just focused on photography now, does the show need a new name?

I love “Live Life Creative” as a name and it’s great to put on a hat or a tshirt, but does it fit this podcast anymore?

Let me know what you think, send me a message on IG @livelifecreativepodcast or tweet me @dkphotoxyz.

Photographing at a Brewery, a Camera Mini-Review, and a Free Photo Editor?

Photographing at a Brewery, a Camera Mini-Review, and a Free Photo Editor?

LLC021

Thoughts about the photographic direction of the podcast? Do I need a new name for the show? Let me know! Send me a DM on Instagram @livelifecreativepodcast

This time around we're talking about photographing a Yelp Grand Rapids event at the New Holland Knickerbocker, another great brewery in Grand Rapids:

How do deal with a beautiful natural light scene that fades at sunset, leaving you with less-than-ideal indoor lighting?

How should you treat guests at the event, and what can you do to get them to relax around the camera?

What should you do when a great photo unfolds in front of you?

Plus, I give a short review of the Nikon D750 (only five years too late) and compare it to the Nikon D7000, my first camera.

And at the end, I talk about the free, open-source photo editor darktable (the lack of capitalization is their choice, not mine), and whether you want to learn more about using a great free alternative to Lightroom.

Thanks for listening to Live Life Creative!

Shooting at Sunset at Atwater Brewery

Shooting at Sunset at Atwater Brewery

This week in adventures with Dylan, we learn some good stuff about shooting in shade white balance and dialing it back in editing, the sweet, sweet goodness of shooting at sunset in a room with giant windows, and maneuvering around terrible backgrounds.

I'm glad to see you've stuck around with the photography stuff, and you'll learn more about improving your own photo game with this episode as well.

If you've got an opinion on the evolution, let me know: You can send me a DM on Instagram @livelifecreativepodcast or an email through the website,
http://livelifecreativepodcast.xyz

This episode I'm talking what I learned by photographing an event at the Green Well, a tasty restaurant here in Grand Rapids, MI.

Mostly it was a lesson in combining flash with the limited ambient light, plus a bit about snagging photos of event attendees who are nervous around a photographer.

Enjoy,
Dylan

What's in My Camera Bag & The Future of the Show

I've enjoyed creating this podcast up to this point, but I underestimated the time commitment it would require and take away from my other projects in the works.

I've spent time retooling the idea of the show and what topic I want to pursue, and I've decided to veer towards photography.

I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me. To set up future episodes, I wanted to touch on what's in my camera bag to give you context for my experiences and better enable you to apply those lessons to your own photography.

Building for Success with Cameron Whitman

Building for Success with Cameron Whitman

LLC016 with Cameron Whitman

This is the second of a two part conversation I had with Cameron Whitman, so if you'd like to hear the first part, go back two episodes and you'll find it there.

One building block for success that Cameron emphasizes is finding ways to build multiple streams of income with your creative skill.

We're jumping straight into the story of how Cameron and his wife started their food blog Our Salty Kitchen (hint: blogging isn't easy), how his stock photography lands him client jobs, and how he can turn client jobs into stock photos, again, building multiple streams of income.

We also talk about times where he's gone down in the dumps with his creativity, and his advice for you on getting out of that kind of dark place.

And in honor of his podcast Cameras or Whatever, we also do picks of the week!

Core Values of Living Life Creative

Core Values of Living Life Creative

LLC015

This is an episode that maybe I should have created closer to the beginning of the podcast, to really lay out the core values of what the show is about, so that anybody new to Live Life Creative would understand what it means and how it’s going to help them.

But I think I needed a little bit of time to figure out exactly what it is for myself first. I dived into creating this podcast head first, and I didn’t have all the answers then. For that matter, I still haven’t figured out all the answers, I just have a little clearer idea of what some of them are now.

I know my ideas aren’t going to get better without help from you and other people listening. So, if you hear something you think is nuts or way off base, the show needs your feedback to refine these core values.

Does Stock Suck? With Cameron Whitman

Does Stock Suck? With Cameron Whitman

LLC014 with photographer Cameron Whitman

Cameron Whitman is a photographer specializing in food, stock, and event photography. If you’ve ever dismissed stock photography as being hokey and dumb, well, you’re mostly right.

But Cameron has a unique and artistic perspective on what stock photography can be. You’ll learn a lot on how something you may think is extremely dull has so much creative potential. So learn not to pre-judge and instead find beauty in everything.

Talking with Cameron really shifted my own perspective on looking at the world and the potential of stock photography. An idea he’s talked about in the Cameras or Whatever podcast is that there needs to be stock photography of everything.

That includes the joys and tears of life, and that needs to be captured so carefully and beautifully, a big challenge creatively if you’re looking for one

If you’re into photography, I’d highly recommend the Cameras or Whatever podcast, it’s one of my favorites.

When to Say Yes to New Opportunities (and When to Say No)

When to Say Yes to New Opportunities (and When to Say No)

I have a problem with saying yes and trying new things. I don’t do it nearly enough, usually because of a fear of failure and a lack of confidence in myself. But it’s also not wise to say yes to absolutely everything. So where do you draw the line?

LET ME KICK THIS OFF WITH A STORY.

Fiverr.com is a platform to offer micro-sized freelancing services starting at five bucks a piece. A few years ago, a new client contacted me on Fiverr about recording a custom voice over script, and it was relatively exciting because it was for ten whole dollars rather than the usual five.

Unfortunately, he messaged me as my wife and I were driving ten hours away from my studio to my parents’ house for the Christmas weekend. I explained the situation to him, sure that he was going to find someone else to record his script, but he actually said he was fine with waiting until I was back in town and could record. Great! And you know what? Saying yes led to even more with this client.

Listen for the rest of the story and how saying yes (or no) at the right times will help you!

Get Comfortable with Discomfort

Get Comfortable with Discomfort

Creativity isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. Creativity is hard, sometimes creativity is just plain uncomfortable. Sometimes it means unpleasant feedback, sometimes it means working with or meeting other people when you’d rather be home alone, or having to be vulnerable by putting your work out to be judged. There are some seriously un-fun parts to being creative at times. Is that really bad for you though?

All You Have is Your Name with Devin Robinson of Anchor & Veil Photography

Devin: “I shot a wedding once where the bride hated her hair so bad that she literally had scissors in her hand, was about to cut her hair before her ceremony, and I had to in there and talk this girl off a ledge because I want them to know it’s not nearly as bad as you think it is.” True story *tips beer*

Devin really delivers the goods on this interview, we talk about how you can rise above the competition by being unique, the most important principle you NEED to have in your business, and this super crazy bug problem shows up right in the middle of the interview, it’s insane to listen to.

We talked for so long that I split our interview into two parts, so part 1 is right now and part 2 will release in the next interview episode, episode 11.

Take a Break! Then Create Again with Isaac Weaver

I got to know Isaac Weaver a bit through a radio conference, and just talking with him got me excited about my job and going out and making cool stuff. When I launched the podcast, I knew he’d have a well-thought-out perspective on creativity and crushing the block that stands in your way.

I met Phil Ayres about two and half years ago, and through that time working with him on projects,  he’s encouraged me to work harder and more creatively, and not be satisfied with good enough. He’s thought deeply about creativity and I hope you learn as much from him in this episode as I have.

Phil Ayres is a pastor, author, website builder (before CMS was invented!), self-taught marketer, musician and song writer!

He wasn’t all of these things all at the same time, but he’s spent most of his life pursuing creative ventures professionally and personally. I’ve gotten to know him over the past several years and I knew he’d be a great interview for this show from the beginning.

Queue up the episode in your playlist and get ready to hear about creativity from one of the most thoughtful and funny people I could hope to know.

Working on New Skills? Look for Signs of Progress

Working on New Skills? Look for Signs of Progress

  • How did your first accomplishments in your creative field encourage you to keep going?
  • You can take that feeling and use it now to break out of your creative rut

Send me a message, especially a voice message, to livelifecreativepodcast@gmail.com

Think back to some of your first accomplishments when you started your creative venture, and how that felt. How did that encourage you and propel you forward to keep learning more and doing more? For me and photography, all it took was a piece of paper and a little ink.

Helping Others Boosts Your Creativity with Aaron Dowd, the Podcast Dude

Aaron Dowd is THE Podcast Dude (of the Podcast Dude podcast)!

He got started in his creative journey through music, learned how to record music, and made his way into podcast editing and producing, first by freelancing, then for seanwes.com. Now he works for Simplecast, an easy platform for hosting and distributing podcasts.

Aaron’s love for content creation comes from his desire to help people and to make the world a better place. In this interview, Aaron and I talk about:

  • How by following his passions and interests he created his own job
  • How helping one of his favorite podcasts led him into business as a podcast editor and eventually to two full-time jobs
  • Why you should help other people if you want to be more creative and create amazing content

Break Out of Your Rut with Creative Mistakes

Break Out of Your Rut with Creative Mistakes

  • If you’ve made a mistake in your creative work, should you fix it and move on?
  • Or is there something to be learned there? Something new and cool?
Story time: My mistake

One day when I was just getting started with photography, Nicole and I went out just to have some fun taking photos of each other. We actually both, separately, had the idea to go out that weekend for it, so it worked out great that she was down for it too. She knew about this really nice little park about 20 minutes away, it’s got a little pocket pond and a nice big fountain, lots of trees, very picturesque.

So we got dressed up in relatively nice clothes, got to the park, and I started taking pictures just of things that were just around. The neighborhood around the park had painted some pumpkins and put them around the park – this was around Halloween time. They were pretty well done! I took pictures of a few of them, but in particular, I took a few of this first pumpkin and I didn’t remember that I had put the white balance was in manual mode, and was way off from what it should have been. Basically the orange pumpkins came out blue.

So, that was my mistake – I gotta take a few test shots first next time.

What can you learn from mistakes you've made? Let's talk about it.

The host interviewed by his wife!

The host interviewed by his wife!

To kick off Live Life Creative, I thought it would be good to give you a little context on where I’m coming from as a creator and as a person. I asked my wife Nicole to interview me for that background, and we share a few laughs on the episode and dive into why this podcast exists and how it’s going to help you.

What’s the point of Live Life Creative?

I want to help you break out of your creative rut through these conversations, by hearing from guests about how they’ve struggled and overcome, and one-on-one episodes with ideas to help you be more creative.

What kind of episodes are you going to make?

I want to create two basic formats of episodes: guest interviews and one-on-one. The guests will be local creators that I know personally in my area that are making cool stuff, as well as reaching out to people online who perhaps have a bigger platform and are respected for their work on a larger scale.

The one-on-one episodes will be lessons I’ve learned in my creative journey that I want to pass on to you, to help you break through a creative barrier you may be facing in your own life. One of the first of these will be about using mistakes you’ve made and using them as tools to springboard into a new level of creativity.
