#35 - "I."

#35 - "I."

The “I”s have it! And Lightnin’ Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It’s intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they’re idiots.

--

In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru H, so naturally, they went with I.

The “I” mixtape:

[SIDE I-1] (1) INTHEWHALE – Animals (2) The Ice Man’s Band – People Make the World Go ‘Round (3) Icehouse – Walls (4) Ice Cube – Down for Whatever (5) Instant Funk – Never Let It Go Away [SIDE I-2] (1) Donnie Iris – Joking (2) The Impressions – I’m Loving Nothing (3) The Icicle Works – Starry Blue Eyed Wonder (4) Weldon Irvine – Morning Sunshine (5) Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain [END]

Sonic Contributors to the thirty-fifth episode of Lightnin’ Licks Radio podcast include: Lee Moses, Brothers Johnson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, James Todd Smith. Grand Puba, Piere Cavalli, Azymuth, Star Wars and Gremlins read-along story books and Sesame Street, Cowboy Junkies, Weldon Irvine, Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, A Tribe Called Quest, Yasiin Bey, Just Blaze, Memphis Bleek, Jay-Z, Earl Sweatshirt, Icehouse, Ivy Davies, Ice Cude, Leaders of the New School, Fred Gwynne, Joe Pecsi, The Bomb Squad, Da Lench Mob, N.W.A., Grand Master Flash & the Furious Five, Quincy Jones, Instant Funk, Day La Soul, Prince Paul. T-Connection, The Postal Service, Sam Beam, Iron & Wine, Another Nashville Coma. Big Country, The Icicle Works. INTHEWHALE, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Ice Man’s Band, The Beatles, The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield, The Funk Brothers, Donnie Iris, The Jaggers, The Cruisers, Steve Miller Band, Ozzy Osbourne. #31 - "G." (redux)

#31 - "G." (redux)

Episode 31 is back after being banned from all streaming platforms. New (the same) and improved (still mid) with certain sonic elements removed (as to not get sued). It’s time to find out which LPs and/or 12” singles filed under the letter “G” from Jay & Deon’s collections they love most, then rap about the artists behind the beloved vinyl. GO!

In 2024, idiotic, introverted one-time award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-first episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru F, so naturally, they went with G.

The “G” mixtape:

(A1) Game Theory – Erica’s Word (A2) Grant Green – We’ve Only Just Begun (A3) Grazia – Soyle Beni (A4) Goodie Mob – Cell Therapy (A5) Glitterhouse – I Lost me a Friend (B1) Gure featuring Roy Ayers – Take a Look (at Yourself) (B2) Grandaddy – Hewlitt’s Daughter (B3) Marvin Gaye – Trouble Man (B4) Guadalcanal Diary – 3 AM (B5) The Goon Sax – Sweaty Hands

Sonic contributors to the thirty-first episode of Lightnin’ Licks Radio, the letter “G” redux, include:

Prince Paul, Brothers Johnson, James Todd Smith, Arc of All and The Source of Light and Power, J. Geils Band, Geto Boys, The Goon Sax, The Go-Betweens, Guadalcanal Diaries, Let’s Active, Guru, Roy Ayers, Gangstarr, Donald Byrd, DJ Premier, MC Solar, Game Theory, Loud Family, Goodie Mob, Cee-lo Green, Dungeon Family, Gnarls Barkley, Grandaddy, Jason Lytle, Mercury Rev, All Smiles, Grant Green, Rudy VanGelder, The Carpenters, Glitterhouse, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Young-Holt Unlimited, Grazia, Marco Bachir, also Bachir Attar with Elliot Sharp, Cervo, Radio Trip, Jimmy Buffet, and The Clockers.

#29 - "F."

Recovering from another Valentine’s Day hangover, the lovesick Lickers return to once again to play the alphabet game in episode twenty-nine. This time they’re discussing their favorite bands and/or artists that are filed away in the “F” section of their vinyl collections. Hot s#!t!

In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2022, idiot basement-dwelling hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming twenty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good handle on the alphabet. They had previously utilized the letters A thru E, so naturally, they went with F. Fan-f#@%ing-tastic.

The ”F” mixtape:

Recorded 02/19/23. Released 02/26/2023. LLR Cover Art by Bryan Konieczka. Episode Art by M.M. Knapps. ***please consider leaving us a voice message*** Lightnin' Licks Radio does not condone the historical social policy of segregation. Vinyl records can, however, be segregated by the race of the artist or band to more easily reorganize them into genres and subgenres. Again, segregation is not good. Deon is not a segregationist. But he is "the Segregator". RATE US! TELL A FRIEND! BE KIND & REWIND!

LLR REWIND #5: Cody's Introduction To PILE, John Fahey (VIDEO)

LLR REWIND #5 features an excerpt from episode 4 of Lightnin' Licks Radio where Deon and special guest Cody discuss individuals in their lives who have served as musical influencers, those beautiful souls responsible for shaping their musical tastes. For Cody, a surprising number of said influencers all entered his life during his first abbreviated stint as a student at Northern Michigan University. Cody has since returned to the university and completed his studies, but the sonic impact made by those special friends remains intact.

If you aren’t streaming on Spotify, you can view the video here on YouTube. Check out Cody’s musical projects YUM, Ampersand Castles, Yard Waste, and the kick ass band he most recently formed with friends at NMU, Liquid Mike on bandcamp. Much of the supplemental artwork / photos featured in the video were created by Cody as well. Very little to nothing was used with permission. Better to ask forgiveness.

Sonic contributors to LLR REWIND #5 include: LEE MOSES / BROTHERS JOHNSON / L.L. #25 - "E."

#25 - "E."

Back from September sabbatical, the Lickers return for episode 25, playin’ the alphabet game again. This time they’re discussing their favorite bands or artists that are filed under “E” in their vinyl collections. Praise be.

In 2022, idiot basement-dwelling hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming twenty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they knew the alphabet pretty good. They had already utilized the letters A thru D, so naturally, they went with E. Genius.

The Filed Under “E” mixtape: [SIDE E-1] (1) EPMD – You Gots To Chill (2) The Easybeats – Sorry (3) EMA – When She Comes (4) Eye To Eye – Nice Girls (5) Ertlif – Camargue [SIDE E-2] (1) The Exploding Hearts – Modern Kicks (2) The Easy Side Kids – I See I Am (3) Yvonne Elliman – Muesli Dreams (4) The Electric Chairs – Rock-N-Roll Resurrection (5) Hazel English – Never Going Home

HHM recap (VIDEO)

HHM recap (VIDEO)

LLR's podcast hiatus during every September is due to their involvement with Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival. Jay was able to introduce Party Nails to his hometown audience (her album You Don't Have To Come Home But You Can't Stay Here was his #2 record of 2020, which was covered in episode 12), while Deon spent his evenings creating a space suitable for a truly unique live music experience. It was one helluva weekend. After the rock-n-roll hangover dissipates, the Lightnin' Lickers will return with Episode 25, where they discuss their favorite records from bands filed under the letter E. Stay tuned!

___

HHM weekend's peak of music events for our 16th annual festival took place on Saturday, September 24th at the Dunlop Building (located at 517 Washington Ave., Bay City, MI), and per usual brought 3 amazing bands! This year's lineup featured Party Nails (Los Angeles), Ratboys (Chicago), and Sugar Tradition (Detroit), who recently opened for Jack White on his Supply Chain Issues Tour. As a festival, we were thrilled with the opportunity to use the Dunlop Building and transform it into a HHM-style venue for one evening, and bring 3 very different bands together to make it's mark on "Midtown Bay City"! It's Hell's Half Mile's sixteenth birthday, and we celebrated the only way we know how.

The Art Department of Bay City provided stunning custom neon and unique art installations in the bar/lounge (former showroom) area, while Lightnin' Licks Vinyl Preservation Society provided venue layout, logistics, design and decorations (service garage). Dunlop Building owner Mike Beattie allowed HHM volunteers to showcase the history of the building, utilizing many promotional materials from the business' glory days as a Pontiac dealership and service center. Dunlop Pontiac was regularly voted as the #1 auto dealership in the Greater Bay region, selling both new and used vehicles to the community. Most longtime residents of Bay City have a connection to the building due to the once sizable workforce at nearby GM Powertrain, allowing family and friends to purchase their cars from the lot with GM discounts. It was important to HHM and Lightnin' Licks Vinyl Preservation Society that the aesthetics of the venue reflected the history of the building, marrying the city's auto manufacturing past with it's cultural present, as any space where working people spent their time away from their families deserves to be treated with respect.

Music included in the video is that of Party Nails, Ratboys, and Sugar Tradition.

"Dear Ernie," (PILOT EPISODE REBROADCAST)

"Dear Ernie," (PILOT EPISODE REBROADCAST)

May the 4th isn't just Star Wars day or whatever - it is also the anniversary of Ernie Harwell's passing. This special bonus offering from Lightnin' Licks Radio, a rebroadcast of LLR's pilot episode, is dedicated to the memory and legacy of the legendary voice of the Detroit Tigers. Take a trip, and may the fourth...become the fifth.

----

Baseball is returning. That's some welcome good news. The cleats clickin', the mitts poppin', the bats crackin'...oh man! The sounds of this soon-to-be-season are as satisfying as she gets, folks! In honor of MLB's Spring Training games kicking off (acceptable mixed-sports metaphor) this weekend, we're placing a special treat in our episode feed.

In episode 6, Deon told the story of creating the original pilot episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio in May of 2019. He did so to test all of the music and recording equipment in the basement and also to convince Jay that their stories could ultimately be rendered as a sonically palatable product, therefore presenting podcasting as a worthwhile endeavor. Well...it worked! Jay agreed to partner with Deon thus Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast was born.

This is that fateful pilot episode.

Although it doesn't sound too similar to what the podcast would eventually become as far as format is concerned, the storytelling element was strong from day one, with vinyl records and other found-sound/field recordings/archival audio sources playing an important role in the story. If you haven't already heard this episode and you enjoy baseball or poetry or stories of childhood memories, give it a listen. We think it's pretty cool.

When many Michiganders think spring, we think baseball. And many spring-loving, baseball-minded Mitten-dwellers have a special place in their hearts for Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Detroit Tigers for many generations. This episode was written and recorded a few days after news broke that Ernie's widow Lulu had passed away at the age of 99, not long before the 9th anniversary of her legendary broadcaster husband's death. We really hope you enjoy it.

Oh, and...Go Tigers :)

#22 - One-Hit Wonder(ful) Artists

Scoring a solitary megahit isn’t exactly a common occurrence for a recording artist. More often than not, they’ll land no singles on the charts whatsoever. When they are lucky enough to score a hit but subsequently fail to produce a follow-up, the label of “one-hit wonder” is often unceremoniously attached to their legacy. Jay & Deon discuss some of their favorite one-hit wonderful artists who deserve additional attention and admiration, then curate a mixtape featuring alternate choice cuts from their discographies.

Third verse – same as the first (and second). In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." In 2021, idiot basement-dwelling hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming twenty-first episode. #20 - Love Is...

#20 - Love Is...

Behold, the third annual ridiculously cheeky lovefest from your friends at Lightnin’ Licks Radio. Disgusting.

They walk in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in their aspect and their eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er their face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

-Lord Byron

BONUS - Artificial Intelligence

BONUS - Artificial Intelligence

[CONNECTION SUCCESSFUL] There will come a time, in the not-too-distant future, when robots will overtake most of the jobs that we humans presently perform. This includes content creation. Machine learning technologies and AI capabilities are growing by the second. AI-generated content will certainly soon be proliferating on the Internet, with consumers less likely to be capable of differentiating between robot content and genuine products of the creative human brain.

In the spirit of embracing the near-limitless potential of AI technology, a very special bonus episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio has been "created" in collaboration with the "good" people at Umbrella Laboratories. Welcome to the future, Lickers.

An AI application (Diltrizatron 20000) was tasked to analyze every second of content released by Lightnin’ Licks Radio from its inception to present day. The application was then programmed to create a new bonus episode reviewing the podcast’s past episodes, including generating host personalities (JAKE and DEONDRA) to interact with each other as well as the listening audience in Podcast America. This audio upload contains the resulting episode.

Sonic contributors to this bonus episode of Lightning Licks Radio include:  Lee Moses. Holland Dozier Holland. Brothers Johnson. James Todd Smith. Radiohead. Kraftwerk. The Nonce. Klapex. Shalamar.
