We all run for different clubs in the Greater Manchester area, but we all share a love for running. In our episodes, we will be interviewing runners past and present…fast, steady and slow; reviewing some of the kit, talking about races and parkruns but if you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear from you. Dave, Cal, Sean and Gav talk to two Cheshire Dragons. The race director for Run Cheshire who has PBs of 5k - 16:53 10k - 35:33 half - 77:47 Mar - 2:53:51. And The Co-founder of Cheshire Dragons, who is a UKA Licensed endurance coach with PBs of 5k - 18:41 10k - 39:10 half - 1:26:29 Mar 3:18:23 along with some ultras. Mike and Helen Harrington talk about how it Cheshire Dragons came about along with how their running journey started. Mike talks about his events company Run Cheshire and how some of his races have caught the headlines year in year out (for good reasons). Helen talks about getting her runs in when she works on US time as well as her drive for ultras. They both explain about how they manage their running with 3 daughters busy schedules and how they prepare to race, but do they always actually race after their warm up.


The team give an update on training after marathons and 3 year breaks. Dave talks about his mass of races in the last few weeks, Sean says about his ankle giving his some jip, Cal is back in training with some goal races and Gav IS BACK with a big race booked, but what race?

Sean, Cal and Katie speak with an East Cheshire Harriers who won South East Lancs League overall, won 1st vet in Manchester League XC twice and finished joint top v40 with Dave Norman, 1st vet at Salford 10k. Michael talks about running as a junior and what skills he learned that help him today. As well as how he got back into running after he recognised that he needed a change in lifestyle. Michael talks about how coaching brings rewards and where he has gathered the information to help him be a coach. Also, he talks about who inspires him and how confidence is key.

The team are back from the big smoke with medals and new T-Shirts along with a hangover that lasted a little longer than expected. Sean talks us through his PB and breaking that 2:39 barrier, Katie tells us about finally running up the mall without cramp, and Cal tells us how to celebrate after a marathon PB!

Sean and Cal speak with a Lake District based fellow runner who loves the hills and fells of Cumbria . Rupert Bonnington is also Director of Mountain Fuel Nutrition, the teams fuel of choice! Cal, Katie, Sean and Dave talk to a Saddleworth Runner who recently completed the Winter Spine Race in 6 days and 12 hours. Whilst raising £4000. With PBs of 5k 20:27, 10k 46:21, HM 1:41, M 3:47. Danielle talks first about how she got into running and how her brother had to make sacrifices for his 1st birthday. She talks about how she got to join Saddleworth Runners and how they helped her with fell running and how good they are as a club. Danielle then talks about the Spine, from hallucinations, to messages from home.

The team talk about their training after 4 weeks of not recording and lots of race reviews, including Trafford, Road Relays, and Wilmslow. Naz also talks about how much he gives back to the community whether thats running, or at his local Mosque. Running through a small injury in his knee, Naz explains what exercise he does apart from running, and its a lot.

Oliver Walker, Erin McMahon, Imogen McBurnie and Sam Horner have all represented their club in numerous events and flying the green and gold flag. Oliver talks about his goals for 10k races this year, Erin talks her trophies, Sam talks about hopefully doing a marathon with his dad, and Imogen talks about her experience in the Northerns.

Sally also discusses her plan to create a run club for women.

Sean, Cal, Katie and Dave speak with two Chorlton Runners. Rachel Burgon has PBs of 19:33 for 5k, 41:11 for 10k, 1:28 for half, and 3:09 for the marathon. Russel Astle-Coates has PBs of 16:42 for 5k, 35:03 for 10k, 75:39 for half, and 2:53:55 for marathon. Rachel & Russel talk about how their started running and what diets they both follow. They both also talk about shoes (obviously) and we find out who has the most pairs. Rachel talks about her marathon experiences, how her work can help with her running, and her strength work. Russel gets an fanboy letter from Michael Harris, his concerns for track access within Manchester, as well as how a coach has helped him since.

Sean and Cal talk to an International runner with a Sub 4 minute mile, as well as a 5 time national champion with sub 14 minutes for 5k and sub 30 mins for 10k. Eion is also the current 3k European Indoor Masters Champion. He also has a PhD in Biomechanics and a charted Physio. Eion discusses how he started running as well as each of his fantastic PBs we achieved. He gives us advice on how we can do small things to help become better, stronger, faster runners. Also, are you a "neuromuscular or aerobic style" runner?


The team chat about what's happened in the last week which isn't much, apart from running in the On Running gear which brough up some interesting comments from passerbys. Dave talks about his Fell Relays, Sean talks about getting back up to big miles, Cal says how much he isn't running and Katie gears herself up for the Oldham Half. :)

Cal, Dave, Katie and Sean speak with a Salford Harrier who currently lives in London. Katie has PBs of 18:41 for 5k, 39:07 for 10k, and 1:42:02 for half marathon. She also was 1st in the UK for 600 meters in 2008 as an U15, and in 2011 she was ranked 9th in the UK for 1500m as an U20. Katie talks about how she got into running, how proud she was as a junior about her wins and why she stopped running. Katie also chats about her accident where she was ran over in London, as well as her recovery when she was worried she wouldn't walk properly again, let alone being able to run. The discussion point of a food diary was a lengthy one, but great detail.

The team introduce a quick fire round for themselves and future guests. Dave talks about his XC form and explains he isn't on drugs, Sean talks about his build up and been able to do a long run, Cal talks about his Manchester Half Marathon and his big PB, and Katie talks about her XC walk and then redeeming herself the week after.

Katie, Dave and Cal speak with the first female U18 of the UTMB YCC Cadet - The Revenge 2023. Eleana is part of the Alpine Run Project which gets kids running from the streets to the peak. With Pbs of 5k 19:44, 10k 41:37 half marathon 1:36:02. She talks about how she joined the Alpine Run Project, how she got into running and how her other hobby of Cheerleading helped with running. Eleana talks about her experience of going to the Alps and how its changed her life. She talks about positivity within her running group and how she wants to keep it that way.

The team are a man down with Sean having man flu, but the talk of Willys Apple Cider Vinegar show how it would have helped him if he could hack it. Katie and Cal explain how they couldnt either, but the ambassadors are well on it with a great review of it. Dave talks about his experience in Madeira, Katie chats about her Knutsford 10k experience and Cal needs a kick up the **** as he stopped in a race...AGAIN!

After 6 months away from the microphones, the Local Runners Podcast Ambassadors have come together to talk about about their training this year and have some discussion points to chat about.

Joe wants to know if you do relays and do you proritise them over other races. And Mike wants to know what goals have been accomplished and whats the plan for next year. Katie, Cal and Sean speak with a local running legend who is a Hyde Village Strider who you will have heard once or twice on the pod as part of the Tour of Tameside. He has ran 17:52 for 5k (parkrun), 35:45 for 10k, 78:19 for half and 2:46:58 for marathon. Joe talks about how he got into running and how he manages it around working as a teacher. He talks about his early 5:23am running club that no one seems to want to join. We also put Joe's FA Cup knowledge to the test and it didn't disappoint. Also, his other talent is how many languages he can speak... man of many talents.

The team talk about the new Skinny Brands Cider, as well as how the money from the Tour is going to be spent. Kit orders have opened up so get on it and support the pod. Katie talks about her medal winning display at NW road relays, Sean is back running some good distances and building up, and Cal's Garmin has broke and he is lost without it.

Katie, Cal and Dave speak with a Salford Harrier father and son duo. Shaun has PBs of 17:51 for 5k, 35:47 for 10k, 80:14 for half, and 2:57:31 for Marathon. Akkeal has ran 14:46 at 5k and 31:17 in the 10k along with some impressive track times including an 8:43:01 3000m and a 4:03:45 1500m. Shaun explains why he is always smiling, and how he started running as well as how he got Akkeal running. Akkeal talks about his track career and how he knows he has a good marathon in him. Will we see one soon. Akkeal also discusses how he has broke his dad a couple of times. They both reflect on what moments they are most proud of for each other.

The team talk about whats happened in the summer break. Cal has been in Wales getting the hills in, Katie has been smashing Parkruns, Dave gives an update that Sean is back running but Dave has some bad news of his own.

Cal, Katie, Dave, Sean and Gav speak with an unattached runner who is part of a group called Tameside Recovery Runners. Martin's PBs are 29:47 for 5k, 1hr3min for 10k, 2.17 for half and 5hr 1min for marathon. Martin talks about how he loves the podcast and finds it inspirational, how he got into running and how them first few runs feel when starting out. He also talks about his 25 year recovery and how his dyspraxia impacts his running. The journey Martin has been on is talked about and how he helps others within a group called ANEW.

The team talk about the race of the year, Black Knight Charge 2023, and how good it was. Apologies are made to runners who went the wrong way during the race. Katie, Cal and Dave speak with Oldham Parkrun regular, a Oldham and Royton Runner. Mike Mannings has PBs of 15:37 for 5k, 32:12 for 10k, 75:58 for half, and 2:35:20 for Marathon. He talks about his time running for Oldham and Royton as a Junior, and then how this helped in becoming a senior runner. He spent time at uni in Leeds, then went to New Zealand where he enjoyed running. Along with this, he talks about his run streak and how he manages family, work and running.

The team have a big list of race reviews. Katie talks about recent races she has done, Dave is busy doing sizzlers, and Cal is building up his mileage.

Visually Impaired runner, Danny Clarke has PBs of 42:01 for 10k, 1:37:56 for HM, and 3:48 for marathon. Danny talk about the challenges he overcomes when running, how he got into running and who helps him out. Nigel talks about how it is to be a guide runner as well as his running, both forwards and backwards.
The team chat about life after the tour. Sean has an injury update, Dave has some big news on a race target, while both Katie and Cal have different opinions of the beer/prosecco mile.

Emma Smith talks about how she got into running, why she runs, and how she is able to do so much being a busy mum. With Emma doing 12 marathons, she talks about she plans her training and her fueling. Emma is a pasionate runner who came into running in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength. When she had her daughter, there was a period in her life where running and fitness wasn't a priority and she explains how she managed that.

Ali Lavender's PBs include 16:27 for 5k, 34:03  for 10k, 75:18 for Half and 2:38:34 for the marathon. Ali talks about how she grew up on a farm and how this helped her running. She also talks about working for Man City, how the Salomon 24 was, and how great it was to get silver in the European 50k Champs. As well as her experience as an elite at Boston Marathon.

The team talk about the last few weeks with races at Wilmslow and the Northern Road Relays. Now with tapers coming thick and fast, this is the last episode before Cal takes on Manchester Marathon, and before Sean and Katie start their taper. Gav is back recording but nothing too much to report on training and Dave has booked a race...but which one is it?

With International Womens Day on 8th Marth 2023, Katie brings the female ambassadors to join her and speak to 3 more fantastic women. Dr Jess Piaseki. Jess is a GB athlete, representing Great Britain in the 2020 Olympic Games Marathon and is now the 2nd fastest British marathon woman in history with a time of 2:22:25, achieved at the Seville marathon last year. Renee McGregor is a leading sports dietician, specialising in eating disorders, RED-s, the female athlete and athlete health & performance. She has worked with Great Britain teams at the Olympics, Paraolympics and Commonwealth Games providing nutritional support. She is also the best selling author of a number of books focussing on performance nutrition in sport, including the popular ‘more fuel you; understanding your body and how to fuel your adventures’. Dr Chloe Elliot is a Manchester based GP who runs for Salford Metropolitan. She has pbs of 3:05:50 in the marathon, 87:36 ½ marathon, 39.09 10k and 18:40 5k. She is best known locally for taking the title of overall female winner in the tour of Tameside in 2021.

With the team back to full strength, they speak the owner of Run North West which is both a retail store and events company. Andrew Whittingham is also an established runner. Running for Wimslow Running club he has PBs for 5k 16:54, 10k 35:17, Half Marathon 77:13 and Marathon 2:50:07. Andrew talks all about how he got into running, his injury problems, being a Coeliac runner, and his thoughts of Parkrun. Andrew also discusses his events, how Run North West has grown, about how it is to put on such great events and the problems that come with it.

Dave gives a fitting tribute to his first coach at Altrincham AC. First ambassador to give a race review is Martha about Windy Hill Fell Race. The team also discuss with Andrew about how to fuel before long runs. Craig Butterworth, Mike Harris, Sara Brown from Hyde Village Striders and Liz Thompson from Oldham & Royton all have their screening with Duncan Mason and Kat Wise. The team also join in the fun and some regret going for an 18 mile run 2 hours before. Some interesting findings for us all, and it wasn't as easy as we thought..."I thought this was a prize?". The team make some big BIG announcements including a Partnership for 2023, Podcast Ambassadors and some big Tour of Tameside news! Duncan speak about how he got into running, tales of the relays with Salford, what his tool does and who makes the most noise. Sean, Cal, Katie and Dave speak to a Salford pair who have some impressive times as well as some seriously good wins. Gary's PBs are 14:37 5k, 30:27 10k, 66:16 Half marathon and 2:23:04 marathon at this years Seville Marathon. Anna's PBs are 16:09 5k, 32:52 10k, 73:21 half marathon, and 2:34:20 at this years Manchester marathon being the 6th lady over the line. Anna tells us about winning Snowdon Marathon, and how she got into running. She also talks to us about how she has only just started doing speed sessions in recent years which have assisted in her great PBs. Gary talks about how he was told he wasn't allowed to run until he was 18, due to family commitments with show jumping (which we didn't expect to hear) and how when he pus a marathon block in he gets a good time.

Katie gives a review Altra's she has been given, Cal talks about not much running after London Marathon, Dave is like a kid in a sweet shop with cross country back on, and biggest news on the pod, Sean tells us that he has ordered some cross country spikes. Cal, Dave, Katie and Sean speak with Andy Norman. Andy is an Altrincham Runner who has some great PBs. He explains how his dad inspired him as a junior, how he became involved in Altra Running. With Andy and Dave being brothers, we made sure we compared PBs between the two. Andy is also know for his passion for beer and he explains how he fits the drinking into the training, or visa versa. Also, Andy and Dave agree to something....what will it be.

Katie, Cal, Sean and Dave speak with a Saddleworth Runner and Saddleworth Clarion Cyclist who has been smashing some local course records this summer. Leo Pollard fell race, 2 lads fell race, Millbrook Monster, Royton Trail race and Mossley 10k are amongst the course records she has broken. Also, competing in duathlons, she is the British Duathlon age group champion and hopes to GB next year. Martha talks about how she trains and mixes cycling with running, as well as how it running is complimented by cycling. Martha discusses her trainers, and how much her first pair of trainers were off eBay.

The team talk about tapering this week with Sean just a week away from Berlin Marathon, Cal and Katie just two weeks away from London Marathon. Dave also gives a wonderful, gripping description of the the Road Relays on the 11th September.
